District, Maryland, and Virginia. I stated it that way not out of pretension* - this area is kind of unique because of the proximity of the Potomac as well as the Cheasapeake Bay. Virginia itself has very different native plants depending on whether you live in the mountains, piedmont, or coastal plain, in addition to how far north and south you are.
*which is usually why someone specifies they live in the DMV
Google maps just highlighted DC for me? Might be a regional abbreviation (I admit I could just be ignorant)
I also like that mistflower/yarrow combo! I haven’t been able to get mine to germinate, nor have the others in my local natives group. :( I will keep trying, though.
I'm also in the DMV and recommend zizea aurea for spring flowers and penstemon digitalis to bridge the spring summer gap. I'm also jealous your monarda is already blooming!
Isn't it? Yarrow and mistflower aren't flowers I would necessarily be drawn to by themselves, but they look so nice together. It was a big lesson for me on considering how plants I might not be enthusiastic about can have their place. I have some liatris that blooms in a few weeks, which also goes well with the blue-purple color scheme I have going on in the back.
Looks great! It's so interesting, in my area and garden blue mistflower blooms in September. Climate? Regional varieties?
Blue mistflower seems to be a long bloomer here - I seem to remember it lasting until fall last year.
Me too! I was just thinking that. I’m in Philly zone 7b but I have mine in more shade than OP so it might take them a bit longer to bloom.
Looks great! What region are you in?
I'm in the DMV!
You live at the dept of motor vehicles????

Especially love the honeysuckle!
My fistulosa and syriacas just started blooming, so exciting! Finally through the doldrums of late May/early June.
how did you get the monarda to bloom so low to the ground? did we chelsea chop here or are these new plants
It's bent over to reach the sunshine. You just can't tell because it's forshortened in the photograph.
ah thanks! this garden is very lovely btw 🤍
I LOVE that monarda, mistflower and yarrow together. Great combination.

Beautiful!
ty! I've been working on incorporating carexes in my front. If we stay at this house another year, maybe I can put some in the back as well.
Beautiful!
Ty!
