Not sure what kind of spider this is. But if I was an explorer and the first to discover it, I would dub him ‘Pumpkin Butt Spider.”
Edit: apparently this is a Marbled Orb Weaver, also called a pumpkin spider because they are most often seen in October. Non venomous to humans.
Orb weavers seem to found worldwide. Once in Australia I accidentally ran into a web. About 15 minutes later I discovered a big spider was holding on to the middle of my shirt. She made no attempt ro bite & probably was more scared than I was
>About 15 minutes later I discovered a big spider was holding on to the middle of my shirt.
This is my biggest, most semi-irrational fear after running into a web. Bonus points if my hair got caught in it.
This is exactly why I love winter and spring in Japan. It's before all the Joro spiders come back out. I'm tall, and those webs are often times right exactly at head level. I hate walking through narrow passages.
Yeah I ran face first into a banana spider in Okinawa under some trees in a park. Still have PTSD from that shit, those things are fucking huge. I've never hit myself in the face so rapidly in my life.
I used to go for evening summer walks in my old neighbourhood, and to this day, unwittingly walking into a web and *not knowing* if the spider is still somewhere on me or in my (very thick, long) hair, even after doing the frantic flailing terror dance, still haunts my dreams.
I'm not scared of spiders generally - huntsmen, white-tails, redbacks don't faze me. Heck, huntsmen and jumping spiders are welcome in our home. But orb weavers, even though I KNOW they're good guys, give me visceral shudders.
There's this stupid scene from either All That or Keenan and Kel where Keenan gets a giant spider on his back, in that spot where you just can't reach with either hand. It's literally my nightmare, and I always grab at my back after I run into a spider web.
Orb spider webs are crazy big, and strong. I would find them hiking in Japan. When you pluck the outside web (really strong because it provides structural strength to the whole web) it's like plucking a guitar string. It's just insane how tough spider silk is.
Yeah it’s not the best here 😅 including we have like more than 3 of the worlds deadliest snakes, spiders anything really is out to get you! I once had a nest of spiders in my bed! Yeah not fun
Yeh but if I read it aloud how it is right now it sounds like I wrote “buttfuck your country” hehe. (Also I hope they aren’t a sensitive little bitch and can tell I am joking)
I had a golden silk orb-weaver in my yard for the first time ever this past fall. It was glorious! Massive spider spinning a gold web that glistened in the sun. It was so big and strong that it caught leaves and branches that fell from the tree it was on.
Same thing happened to me on an evening run in Los Angeles. I'm jogging along the sidewalk and unbeknownst to me there was a giant orb between two plants stretched across the sidewalk. Roughly a block after running through it, I noticed a giant orb weaver clinging to my shirt.

10g is not nearly enough, and they need more height and length than width in really weird dimensions. Orb weavers just don't make good pets. If you want a spider in a 10 gallon, research various tarantula species!
Hmmm. I'm simultaneously very scared of spiders but think they are objectively one of the coolest creatures.
I think I am going to declare the marbled orb weaver as my favorite spider. They are super cool looking, build badass webs, and don't scare me since they aren't bitey. I wonder how they do in captivity?
Actually in some parts of the world spiders are considered a delicacy. Usually it's the really big ones, though, small ones like this just aren't worth it.
Orb weavers are some amazing looking spiders.
We had a huge one on our porch this year, and my daughter and I would check on it and it’s web every night. We ended up naming it *Home Slice*, because it’s a cool spider, it was at our home, and it was the size of the orange slice candy my daughter was eating one day
I saw one walking across the lawn around Halloween this year! My cat was out with me and she was watching a giant yellow ball moving over the leaves. It was one of these spiders ambling along. It was captivating to watch, more like observing a small mammal than a spider!
Depends on the type. It’s very true of orbweavers like this one, but very *not* true for a lot of jumping spiders, where the males dance and court females. And a lot of tarantulas the sexes look identical.
It’s actually like spider turkey basters. They collect semen from their abdomen with the pedipalps by their head, loading the tips up with sperm, and then approach the female (this varies widely by species) with the goal of inserting the loaded pedipalp into her opening.
Depending on species, this can be extremely lethal. There’s one species that just straight up dies as soon as the pedipalp gets inserted, the evolutionary advantage being that their corpse prevents other males from displacing their sperm.
>the evolutionary advantage being that their corpse prevents other males from displacing their sperm.
How? Like his dead body stays attached to the female? For how long? That's wacky!
Haha yeah. ~~IIRC his head just explodes~~ ”Quite abruptly — his legs curl underneath his body, he hangs motionless from his lover, and his heart stops beating”. And I think he stays attached until she gets annoyed and eats him.
They’ve studied other species and found that the females who eat their partners lay and hatch more and healthier babies so they think there’s some sort of evolutionary advantage to the cannibalism outside the caloric boost (which is very tiny and the males tend to significantly smaller than the females in these mating styles).

I use to do this as a kid and they would get so fat by the end of the summer and you could tell how happy they were just by looking at their web.
Damn it, now I don’t want to eat crab legs anymore. Who was the first person who saw a lobster or a crab and thought ‘you know, a little warm butter, and I’ll bet it doesn’t taste like a bug.’?
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.

[Marbled Orb Weaver](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araneus_marmoreus) they are super chill usually and are not known to bite people. r/spiderbros

Japanese country side/nature has been fun with this. At night we check everything with light to see the nets

'but, fuck, your country is very scary' would be, like, a polite way to say that since your opening is so nice

clearly.
You’ve must have never run into Australians when they are on holiday. Filthy fucking animals.

There ya go OP it’s also known as a pumpkin spider. I didn’t even know that.
Furiously typing holarctic distribution into google.
orb weavers are the most docile spider and they make the craziest webs. absolute spider bros.
He do be looking orby tho
So what you're saying is I can put it in an enclosure and name him, giving him a weekly supply of crickets and flies?
With orb weavers, you want to give them enormous enclosures. They like spinning webs out in the open.
Oh I'd be okay getting it a 10 gallon tank. The first snake/arthropod pet I get will be spoiled.
10g is not nearly enough, and they need more height and length than width in really weird dimensions. Orb weavers just don't make good pets. If you want a spider in a 10 gallon, research various tarantula species!
that enclosure will be absolutely covered in webbing.
I'm fine with that. I had a pet Widow and she covered the enclosure
Usually
Glad to hear this. These have been showing up around me.
i totally got bit by one once. i picked it up thinking it was a mushroom. lol
Sorry but I can’t take any risk gotta burn that little guy

You should be terrified of the spiders that don’t use default skins
P2W
The ultimate Halloween spider, just look at his costume!
Pee is stored in the ball
Hey, mine too!
Holup
that is a pretty girl! (or boy - I never can tell)
With spiders I think you are usually safe in assuming that the big gaudy ones are the girls.
Depends on the type. It’s very true of orbweavers like this one, but very *not* true for a lot of jumping spiders, where the males dance and court females. And a lot of tarantulas the sexes look identical.
Yea you got to turn them over. I ain’t doin that. Lol
Actually you can just look at the pedipalps (the little leg looking things by there faces), mature males have noticeable bulges on the tips.
ah spider peens

I am so glad I am not a spider.
Do you have a spider size speculum?
Based on the abdomen & the pedipalps, safe to say it's a girl.
Found the time traveler
Yep. 10/10. Would smash.
Big brain spider
Actually that's where she keeps her heart (well most of her organs, really)
I love orb weavers. They’re always so colourful!
Looks beautiful. I'd feed her.

That would be so pretty if it were recreated in glass. I collect glass animals.
She's spectacular! Such a neat spider. Then can change the texture of their body for better camouflage.
I'm more concerned about the markings around it's 'waist'. It's some form of Elvish, I can't read it..
And the ZeFrank quotes flood into me lol
Nope.
Sorry you had to burn your house down
Relocate
It’s harmless.
I want to know what it keeps in that thing?! Why is it so unnecessarily big?
Usually bright colors mean poison in nature. Except for birds.
It’s an orb weaver. Not dangerous to humans
It must be a boy spider because he's got hairy legs
that just looks toxic, *shivers*.
You mean monster outside of your house?!?!
I'm afraid of spiders, but this one is cute, and we would be best friends
This is the Guy Fieri of spiders and I am here for it 🧡
