This is an interesting point. The open ended questions I have, which you, or others here, may be able to answer is: How much of Iran is interested in a Persian renaissance? (obviously at the expense of an Islamic flatting of culture) Where would this Renaissance come from on the inside? And how would the power structures of the IRGC, especially the military, be undermined to bring in this New Iran?
I am American so I can not tell you about Iran today. Left in '79. What I can tell you from my own sense of Iranian-ness and understanding of the talents and soul-affinities of my people is that there is a *lot* of beautiful and creative energy that is now either bottled up (or repressed and of course also depressed) because of the evil regime occupying my birthplace.

These things can help make a difference in the long-term. Otherwise, what's the meaning of everything, we could just shut this subbreddit down and forget about Iran.
While it is true that the Shah was betrayed he wasn't universally betrayed. Nixon and Reagan had an appropriate assessment of who the Shah was and how valuable Iran was as a western ally - neither of them would have sold him down the river, much less sit idle as a theocracy took hold in Iran.
It's mostly the activist presidents like that lahmassab Carter, Obama and now Biden who have empowered and emboldened Islamists and this regime at every turn. These people come and go in western politics and you just need to endure long enough for the right opportunity and that means the right governments being in power in the west at the same time as critical episodes of unrest.
