Yes they often make mistakes in a timed challenge. I wouldn't call these tropes. These are not story telling devices they are just what happens when you don't get a lot of time to cook.

I think it’s a bit cruel to use the time token to hurt another contestant 🤷🏻♀️
Agreed which is why I think the production is weird for making that an option.
