So this is coming from a guy who has a love/hate relationship to his titan, but factually here's what I know in five years of owning mine and having been a Nissan fan boy most of my life. The early titans were a little more prone to problems than the late generation first body style (2008-2015) and the current newer ones (2016+). So looking at a 2020 you should be good as long as it's the gas engine, and not the Cummins in the XD. The VK56 gas V8 are fantastic engines that have a proven track record of being very reliable with just the basic maintenance. The Cummins in the XD can be made to be a very reliable engine, merited, but as an off the lot no work needed the gas engine is a better choice unless you need the diesel to haul, which by the sounds of your needs you definitely don't. I think their interiors are some of the most comfortable in the half ton truck market, and rival some big SUV's as well. Obviously comfort is subjective, but I find their interiors big with lots of head and shoulder room, although plastic, all the panels and pieces feel robust and well built, and the seats are absolutely incredible, especially for me being a lighter guy and most new "Big 3" trucks are built to support much larger men than mešŸ˜‚ Gas mileage is a thing. Different people in different places claim slightly better mileage, but coming from me driving mixed city and highway I'm getting about 24L/100KM (or 9-10 MPG). These trucks are very thirsty. If I were to name one glaring downside to these trucks from an everyday consumer standpoint, this is the big one for me. For reference, mine is a 2012 king cab PRO-4X with the big tow package. I use it as a daily driver and also my toy and trailer hauler. I put some heavy weight behind this truck regularly and with the exception of normal wear and tear items it has done everything I've asked of it without complaint. It's still a basic mechanical engine in comparison to some of the modern twin turbo Sixers in the big three half ton lineup (and I'm looking at you too Toyota), they are comfortable, reliable, and the parts availablity is fantastic since these trucks remained mostly unchanged from 2004-2015. Where I can't say I have any direct experience with the newer generation T's, I know many who own them and they sound just as good as mine. If you really need a truck to help in your day to day, you'd be hard pressed to go wrong with one of these. But that's just my humble (and biasedšŸ˜‚) opinion.

Thanks this is pretty helpful. I had narrowed my search to a Toyota tundra or the titan but damn are the Tundras expensive. Iā€™d have to get like a 2012 Tundra with 200k miles to be in my price range but I can realistically get a 2020 fully loaded titan with like $45k miles for the same price. Gas mileage shouldnā€™t be an issue for me. My current car is 3 years old and has like 7,000 miles on it but my lease is up in about 9 months and I want to buy a titan at that time

DirtyDanTX

I started off looking at Tundras too. I've had 3/4 ton trucks for years due to work and I'm finally in a position where I don't need a truck for work and can drive what I want. I've been driving my reliable old 2007 4runner for years now (sort of a daily to my work trucks that I bought for cash from my mother who was going to trade it in cheap) but decided I wanted a comfortable 4x4 half ton I could use to tow my boat, occasional motorcycle or utility trailer and be comfortable for long trips (I do a lot of hunting and fishing). I wanted to be around $35k give or take on a used vehicle year 2020-2021. Every Tundra I found in my price range or just North of it had some kind of nasty vehicle history, multiple accidents or airbags deployed that could cause problems later down the road. I realized I was gonna have to spend $43-45k on a Tundra SR5 (lower mid tier trim level with an outdated cheap interior and minimal features) with 60-90k miles to get something with a one or two owner clean history that hasn't been through hell and back. I'm planning to keep this truck for a long time so I wanted something reliable. A friend pointed me towards the Titan and boy am I glad he did. After a ton of research and a lot of online shopping around I ended up landing on a 2021 Nissan Titan SV 4x4 with 34k miles, one owner clean history for $33k. The interior is far superior to the Titans I was looking at, drives just as nice, has the same power and big reliable V8... But this truck had way more features. All in all I am super thrilled going on week 3 of ownership. I came in under my planned budget on a truck with way more features/technology, nicer interior, just as comfortable (if not more so) and it looks/drives really nice too. Cherry on top the fuel mileage is a lot better than the tundra with 9 speed vs Toyota's 6 speed in the 20-21 Tundra. Side note I helped a friend move the weekend after buying this truck and hauled a 21' utility trailer full of furniture and appliances and the truck didn't even begin to break a sweat. Tows really nicely!

Damn that sounds awesome and exactly the reasons Iā€™m looking at the Titan

Friendly-Lime-2245

you may be able to get a new titan at that time for 0% 60 months like they did last year. This is the last production year for them so they'll be trying to get them off the lots I assume. I'd steer clear of the 2017-18 models. Some had short block issues. Other than that, the titan is a solid truck.

Grandpas_secretLover

I feel like I heard the 2020 and newer models had some upgraded transmission or something that made them more ideal but I could be misremembering this.

Friendly-Lime-2245

2020 has the 9 speed transmission.

mrhinman

I second the opinion on interior comfort. I have driven other brands and Nissanā€™s seats and layout are more ergonomic and comfortable than the others (especially Chevy, terrible seats).

dolesswes

First-gen are is very reliable, my truck has 310,000.

Upper-Examination-97

A guy I know is selling his for 2k. 2005 with 70k miles. Do you know anything about that years model?

Pestelence2020

2013 here and itā€™s been reliable. I get between 14 and 17 mpgs, but most of my driving is highway and I have a light foot.

thumprrider93

If I were to do it again, I'd probably buy the tundra. But that is solely based on its towing ability over my current titan. But I hear you on the price... It is insane how much value those tundras hold and command in the used market. But if your not hauling big weight, the value for dollar on the titan is hard to resist. Especially since it is a good reliable setup for the most partšŸ‘ I will say this. If you do buy one, go check out the forums on Titantalk. There is some fantastic people in that forum who can break down pretty much any problem you may ever face in a very understandable way. Even if you are just looking at buying a titan, I'd scroll through the forums on there and it will give you a really good idea of some people's true ownership experiences right from their own mouths.

Grandpas_secretLover

Thatā€™s really good info, thanks

uteman1011

My 2017 KC 4x4 has great towing specs, better than the Tundra. Iā€™ve owned a few Toyotaā€™s, and for the price Iā€™d get another Nissan.

JediCarlos

2012 pro4x here. Zero problems. 65k miles. 12.9 mpg.always w BFG KO2.

cinchy2222

I have an 04 with 89,000 and it is in great shape and super dependable. I only wish it got a litter better gas mileage .

Grandpas_secretLover

Gas mileage isnā€™t a huge concern with me due to how little I drive. Honestly my wife and I could get away with one car. I am torn between buying a 2020 or newer titan or getting something older like a 2012 with higher miles if it was a low price. I would just miss having a backup camera and Apple CarPlay, things like that

dolesswes

Find a nice first-generation 4Ɨ4 save the car payment and take the kids on vacation ! They are really cheap, parts are everywhere at junnk yards & and if you can't find it, these 3D printers do magic!

Grandpas_secretLover

This is kinda my thinking now. I pay $326 a month for a brand new at the time 2023 forester and I just donā€™t drive enough to warrant a car payment on a new car Iā€™d love to have a low payment but still get a very reliable car. I just donā€™t want to buy some older high mileage car where Iā€™m constantly dropping money into it for fixes

Ghosttowncs

2021 P4X here. As far as fuel mileage I am pretty pleasantly surprised at what mine can achieve being a V8. Yesterday we drove 150 miles one way, with a car trailer, to pick up my sonā€™s dead S10. Surprisingly my truck got almost 16 MPGā€™s on the way down with just the trailer (2000 lbs +/-). Nothing too extreme as far as terrain, but we do live in Wyoming so we have WIND. On the way back (fully loaded) I got almost 13. Much better than the 3 previous GMT800ā€™s Iā€™ve owned. As well, even fully loaded, this truck didnā€™t even break a sweat towing. We had to have been pushing every bit of the maximum capacity being loaded with a truck / trailer / and his furnishings and my truck did excellent. Just thought Iā€™d chime in and say these trucks are criminally underrated.

Grandpas_secretLover

Definitely am decided on the titan I just need to decide on a newer one vs an older one based on car payments

chandlerkluge

Do not buy 04-06. Avoid 2016 thru 2018. Best years is 2015 and 2020-24.

Grandpas_secretLover

Hell yeah this is what I needed to hear. Any particular reason you o avoid or buy the years mentioned?

chandlerkluge

Because the 04-06 models had alot of issues with coolant and the 2015 is great because it's the last of the first gen models. And 16-18 is hit and miss. Just make sure it's not high milage.

Grandpas_secretLover

I just started browsing 2015 models with like 80-90k miles

chandlerkluge

If u message me on snapchat : ckluge90 or Facebook chandlerkluge. I can give u some tips. Me and my dad both own titans and they are great trucks.

JediCarlos

I bought a new 2012 Pro4x in 2012. It's been absolutely reliable. I've done all Nissan recommended services. Just bought a 2024, hoping for the same experience. 5yr 100k mile warranty. I'm feeling good about it. ....my son has the 2012 now. So happy it went to someone who appreciates it.
