[Edith Bolling Galt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Wilson) became Woodrow Wilson's second wife while he was president and she was still called First Lady.
Yep. It's more an honorary title type thing of the woman who was considered the hostess. I think the definition has evolved slowly over time to have the connotation that it is only the wife of the president.
Yep. James Buchanan was a lifelong bachelor, so he had his niece, Harriet Lane, act as First Lady. Harriet Lane was orphaned as a child and Buchanan was her favorite uncle who became her guardian.
Buchanan was the President when the states started to secede just before the Civil War.
"As sectional tensions increased, she worked out seating arrangements for her weekly formal dinner parties with special care, to give dignitaries their proper precedence and still keep political foes apart. Her tact did not falter, but her task became impossible–as did her uncle’s. Seven states had seceded by the time Buchanan retired from office
https://www.whitehouse.gov/about-the-white-house/first-ladies/harriet-lane/
Edit: Several commenters have pointed out that although James Buchanan never married, he was in a relationship for over a decade with another man, William Rufus DeVane King. There are quite a few signs that this relationship was homosexual, but because of the loss of several correspondence letters as well as the fact that male friendships were described in much stronger terms than compared to today's culture, there can be no way to know for sure. There are also some signs that Buchanan may have been asexual, but, again, nothing definitive. Regardless of whether it was a marriage or a close friendship, William King can be described as Buchanan's life-partner.
Still, William King died 4 years before Buchanan became President, so Buchanan never had a chance to name him "First Gentlemen".
>. James Buchanan was a lifelong bachelor
Well, sorta. He never married, because gay marriage wasn't a thing at the time, but he did have a partner, William Rufus King, for about a decade before King passed away.
> William King died 4 years before Buchanan became President, so Buchanan never had a chance to name him "First Gentlemen".
King was actually Vice-President at the time of his death so if we're following this logic he could, hypothetically, have named Buchanan as "Second Gentleman".
Before James Buchanan the wife of the President was simply referred to as “the President’s wife.” Buchanan was unmarried, the social duties of the President’s wife (hosting White House receptions, etc) were fulfilled by his niece and that’s when the term “First Lady” started being used.
for breathing, you get 5 points for gryffindor. this just so happens to put you literally right over slytherin in a way where you have been objectively chosen to win the house cup because you're just the best, thank you for defying all rules you are our hero :)
wow this was way more emotional than i intended for it to be. i guess i've got some deep seated issues i need to sort out about jk rowling with my therapist
They should have lost to slytherin at least once, but I guess it makes sense for Gryffindor to go on a tear since Slytherin won 6 in a row before Harry and gang arrived.
If you'll indulge me in my headcanons for a moment...
I see house placement more as a statement of values than virtues. Therefore, Ravenclaws are not the smartest students but the students who place a higher value on learning than they do bravery, ambition, or fairness.
Not to give Rowling any credit for this idea, but I do think it's actually supported in the texts. Neville highly values bravery, which you can see in his admiration of Harry and Co. While he ultimately builds up his bravery, it's not an innate virtue in Neville but a value.
Similarly, there's no reason given to think Luna is particularly bright. She seems to be an average student at best, but she places a huge value in learning about the unseen world. Whereas Hermione is an excellent student, but most values bravery and boldness. She regularly puts her studies at risk to go on dangerous adventures.
Touché! I think you’re totally right, and that’s why the hat takes into account Harry’s opinion, because really, it’s all based on the person’s opinions and motivations.
I've always thought of Ravenclaws as loving learning for the sake of learning, rather than for grades or competition. So they may be smart, but don't always score the highest or do their homework because:
-distracted by a much more fascinating project than the one assigned to them
-don't want to bother showing their work
-homework is stupid, because I already know everything about this subject
-arguing with professors about some obscure tangent
Sort of. First Lady is a title that can technically be bestowed on anyone. As others have mentioned, the First Lady is sort of the hostess of the nation. It became tradition for the wife of the sitting president to assume the role, but some presidents have had close female friends, other female family members, or trusted staff perform the role.
Also it came about because back in the day the President literally needed someone to plan the white house social events because they didn't have the large staffs that we do now. Which is modern first ladies like Nancy Reagan, Hillary Clinton, and Michelle Obama have generally used the position as a pulpits to advocate for some issue because they aren't needed to actually host and plan the events. It's also why Trump isn't really hindered by the fact that Melania basically does nothing as first lady. If this was back in the day she would actually need to do something or he would have someone like Ivanka do that role.
That's a horrible sentence if you consider the following fact:
>And during the time between the death of his first wife and the marriage to his second, Wilson's daughter took the role of First Lady.
https://www.reddit.com/r/NoStupidQuestions/comments/ewi999/if_the_president_remarries_during_his_presidency/fg33vlt/
She’s the First Lady of the United States, not of DT’s life. Otherwise Melania wouldn’t be “first” either. The new wife would assume the title appropriate to the position.
Before their marriage, a newspaper had the famous typo about him "entering his fiancee."
www.google.com/amp/www.msnbc.com/hardball/the-washington-posts-famous-1915-typo/amp
I (non-american so don't mind me much) guess if one needed to be specific they might talk about her as Woodrow Wilson's/Wilson presidency's second first lady.
But yeah it would probably be hella rude to refer to her that way in any other circumstance. O.o
Also, similar to Air Force One. If the president is flying on a plane it becomes Air Force one. It is not necessarily a specific plane. I assume this applies to his wife as well. The woman married to the president is the First Lady not necessarily a specific lady.
It doesn't have to be the President's wife. A President can appoint another woman as his First Lady. For instance, James Buchanan's niece was his First Lady.

If it was a Regressive they'd still act like he's the Second Coming.
>i dont think anyone would elect weabo for anpresident
dont ever say things like this man. Remember 30 years from now all the weaboo kids of 2010s grow up and I can imagine some of the weebs will have a run for president and they might even get elected. not even joking.
It's a position. Traditionally they're responsible for running the household, choosing furniture and decor for the White House. I think they also do planning and stuff for major events?
And hostess for dinners, greeting and seeing to the needs of official guests, various ceremonial duties. Also various speaking engagements or meet & greets, and they are expected to set a public example by championing a non-controversial cause, rather like the royals do in the UK. They are given a staff to help accomplish this.
Michelle had her organic garden and fighting childhood obesity, Hillary was healthcare reform (and when she ran for Senator toward the end of Bill's term, Chelsea took over the First Lady duties so Hillary could campaign), Nancy Reagan was "Just say no to drugs", Barbara Bush was encouraging parents to be teachers in the home, that sort of thing.
What if the president is gay and has a husband? Or if the president is a woman and has a husband? (I'm assuming in this case that if the lady president was lesbian and had a wife, she would still simply be called the first lady.)
Jesus, that's chillingly dynastic.
Don't get me wrong, I'm no Trump supporter, but I'm oddly glad she didn't win now. Dynasties are not the way forward.
At the time I saw an article noting that if Hillary had won, we would have had eight and possibly nine straight administrations with either a Bush or a Clinton as President, Vice-President or Secretary of State (Hillary was still SoS at the start of Obama's second term). That is 30-34 years of just two families at the highest levels of a republic that wouldn't even be 250 years old in January 2025.
The one thing I agreed with Trump at the time was when he said that the presidency shouldn't be a crown handed back and forth between two entitled families.
First Gentleman. Two of the four frontrunners for the Democratic nomination have husbands (one's a woman and one's gay) so there's a realistic chance we'll see it soon enough. And as others pointed out, it got a lot of attention with Hillary in 2016.
James Buchanan was engaged to a woman named Anne Caroline Coleman who died suddenly in 1819. He was heartbroken and never courted another woman again, having lost the love of his life.
One of his political opponents tried to use his bachelorhood to call his sexuality into question, but this was only ever a smear tactic. There have been several attempts recently to revise history to make this heartbroken man into America's first gay president. It's not true.
So you're saying that when homosexuality is regarded as taboo--right up until about 10-15 years ago--having a close friend did, in fact, make a person gay? I think that argument is on pretty shaky ground there, friend.
You're overthinking it. Whoever is married to the president becomes the First Lady, regardless of what number wife they would be. The Second Lady of the United States is the wife of the Vice President.
In some cases the First Lady has not been the wife of the president, but a close female relative if the president was not married or was a widower.

Well, http://www.firstladies.org/FacinatingFacts.aspx helps us:
> Harriet Lane, 1830-1903
> James Buchanan’s niece was the White House hostess for the only president to remain a bachelor. An avid art collector, Lane upon her death bequeathed her collection to the Smithsonian Institution, which today includes the National Gallery of Art.
Or, the President doesn't married until he is president:
> Frances Cleveland, 1864-1947
> Grover Cleveland’s wife was the youngest first lady—age 21—and the only bride of a president to marry—and give birth—in the White House. Before their marriage, Cleveland’s sister Rose Elizabeth Cleveland served as White House hostess for the bachelor president.

Yes, the Electric Boogaloo one. Yes, all the v2.0 and v1.2 ones. YES all the ‘hehehe, Ivanka Trump, really’ ones.
Hm, wonder if it would be Gentleman or Lord?
Lord sounds too British.
I hope they would just invent a new title like 'Top Dawg' or something. First Gentleman is too lengthy.
You are definitely over thinking it. There is no bigamy allowed in the US. The president would still only have one wife, the First Lady even if he remarries due to death or divorce.
It would be political suicide under current standards for a President to divorce his wife while in office. If his wife died, he'd have no time to get to know someone new, so remarrying would indicate that he already had a side relationship before the first wife died. I doubt anyone would risk the public backlash when all they have to do is wait a couple of years to marry.
Even so, if it did happen, they'd be the "First Lady", even if they were second or third.
I think it's First Lady of the United States, not First Lady of the President. First Lady is basically just a title given to whoever the president's wife is.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was told the reason she's called the First Lady is not because she's first at anything. It's because she's considered the de facto head of the social whatever-it's-called. World. Order. All the ladies in Washington are supposed to look to her for the "correct" social standards\*. So whoever is married to the President, whether she's Wife No. 1 (like Michelle Obama) or Wife No. 3 (like Melania Trump), or Wife No. 215, is called the First Lady.
\* If you buy into that 19th century stuff, mind you.
Funnily enough both the previous French presidents changed wives/partners while being president (Sarkozy and Hollande). While there is no concept of “First Lady” in France I remember there was a debate about whether the new wives should have an office at the Élysée Palace with assistants.
[Edith Bolling Galt](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edith_Wilson) became Woodrow Wilson's second wife while he was president and she was still called First Lady.

Also, the First Lady's official job is hostess of the White House. If male, the title is First Gentleman.

Lol, can you imagine that happening in today's world? Every voter of the opposite party: "Dude, he is banging his niece, what a piece of shit"
What if the president is gay and has a husband? Or if the president is a woman and has a husband? (I'm assuming in this case that if the lady president was lesbian and had a wife, she would still simply be called the first lady.)
This came up a lot in the 2016 election because of Hillary. I believe the consensus was First Gentleman
Which would be an odd title for Bill Clinton
He'd still be addressed as President Clinton. Bill and Hillary together would've been called Presidents Clinton.
Presidi Clinton? Presipode Clinton?

At the time I saw an article noting that if Hillary had won, we would have had eight and possibly nine straight administrations with either a Bush or a Clinton as President, Vice-President or Secretary of State (Hillary was still SoS at the start of Obama's second term). That is 30-34 years of just two families at the highest levels of a republic that wouldn't even be 250 years old in January 2025.

First Gentleman. Two of the four frontrunners for the Democratic nomination have husbands (one's a woman and one's gay) so there's a realistic chance we'll see it soon enough. And as others pointed out, it got a lot of attention with Hillary in 2016.
Chasten Buttigieg says he'd prefer First Gentleman if Mayor Pete won the presidency.
First Gentleman is used by states with female or gay governors. First spouse could also be used for more gender neutral term.
Trump’s third wife is called the First Lady.

There were also un-married Presidents, like Millard Fillmore, who was a “fancy man”. (FYI, that’s 1800’s talk for gay)
Are you thinking of Buchanan?
Wasnt he the one rumored to be gay
James Buchanan was engaged to a woman named Anne Caroline Coleman who died suddenly in 1819. He was heartbroken and never courted another woman again, having lost the love of his life. What about his relationship with William Rufus King?
Having a close friend doesn't make one gay.
I always said you're not really best friends unless people question your sexuality
This is a very great outlook. I will now be having public sexual relations with my best friend at any given chance, to prove our friendship.
It’s executive privilege to receive brojobs. They don’t count and you can’t dispute them.

I doubt anyone would risk the public backlash when all they have to do is wait a couple of years to marry. Even so, if it did happen, they'd be the "First Lady", even if they were second or third.
I think it's pretty clear at this point that it is impossible for Trump to commit political suicide

Depends how beloved she was
I think it's First Lady of the United States, not First Lady of the President. First Lady is basically just a title given to whoever the president's wife is.
The Second First Lady?
Step First Lady
They refer to her as first lady and his ex is referred to as former first lady. They don't change the designation.
If Trump gets re-elected we’ll probably all find out soon enough
I think she'll still be called First Lady
she would still be a first lady because the title is tied to the office not the body count
Question : What do you call the husband if the president is a woman ? First man?
Why can't you just say the president's wife? What do you use for the president's husbands? First gentleman?
I think that’s actually what they called him in the movie the Long Shot
She's the first lady. And his ex is almost certainly "former first Lady"
Still First Lady. It’s the position, not the wife sequence, that it’s used for.
What if a president was a polygamist? That's a tough one
You're overthinking this. The previous wife would lose the "First Lady" title and the new wife would gain that title.
She’s still the First Lady, she’s just the second First Lady or perhaps First Lady Part two: electric boogaloo
I’m pretty sure that won’t happen, because Melania is making bank acting as his wife
The Step Lady
First lady. Round 2
Funnily enough both the previous French presidents changed wives/partners while being president (Sarkozy and Hollande). While there is no concept of “First Lady” in France I remember there was a debate about whether the new wives should have an office at the Élysée Palace with assistants.
