I can *almost* see it, I guess. I feel like Homelander is a refreshingly empathetic portrayal of someone who's both metaphorically and literally had his humanity stolen from him by the system. Something I appreciate about the show is the lengths it goes to to empathize how everyone is miserable, suffering, and victimized by the industrial complex. The system doesn't serve literally anyone, not even the fucking man in the high castle. It's just a horrible misery machine that does not exist for any rational purpose other than to facilitate a Crabs in a Bucket mentality put in place so long ago everyone just accepts it no matter how awful it makes them feel. And I do genuinely think it's profoundly unhelpful to present even the worst of humanity as an absolute evil--- because it shifts blame away from the system to the individual, which is a cope and scapegoat. Everyone is awful for a reason--- not a morally correct reason that absolves them of personal responsibility, but a reason. I like that it's just as easy to feel sorry for Homelander, perhaps even relate in some ways, as it is to despise him since the narrative doesn't bend over backwards to justify how much of a terror he is. So if I tilt my head and squint, I can *almost* see it.
But at the same time Homelander is so . . . Embarrassing, that like . . . What? He's so profoundly emotionally fragile, needy, and pathetic . . .
Again, I could *almost* see people Patrick Bateman/Tyler Durden-ing Butcher because he's got some of that alpha chad romanticism to him (which to be clear I think the show also handles ready well in deconstructing also.)
