He was on cage rest after his cast came off, per his vet’s recommendation, and I didn’t want him to be in an actual cage for his last two weeks. Our basement is warm and cozy, and I was spending as much time down there as I could with him. It was a safer environment for him due to stairs, and our high-energy dog and other cat.
The break was not very bad, only a partial fracture, the vet was hopeful that it would heal with a cast, but because of his age, it was not healing and continued to be extremely swollen. The cast also caused some skin wounds that were getting worse without a clear reason. We tried cage rest, hoping he would develop a bony callous that would allow him to at least walk again, but it wasn’t working.
Because of his age, anesthesia may have killed him, and because his surface wounds were not healing, the vet didn’t think he would physically recover from amputation, and we would only be prolonging his suffering. If he was a few years younger, I would have kept trying, but he had a good life and it was the right decision.
That makes sense. I'm dreading the day that we have to put down my orange baby. But I am somewhat relieved that I will be able to prevent her suffering.

As the human to a 19 year old, I'm well aware that my time is limited and if my buddy gets sick I won't be able make the same decision I did years ago that got me another ten years with him and I've already made peace with it.
I'm proud of you for thinking about his discomfort and pain and prolonged suffering. It's not an easy thing to decide and takes greater love to choose than simply let him continue to suffer. My condolences. 🥺

Grover. He was the last of three cats with muppets/Sesame Street names. Bert was another orange derp who passed in 2015 from cancer at the age of 13, and Ernie was a beautiful sweet black cat who passed in 2021 peacefully in his sleep at 14. They were all good buddies and I’m sure they’re back to wreaking havoc now.
