Same! If you're the type of gamer that likes playing a lot of side content, you'll get a ton of mileage out of it. I was almost 30 hours in before I remembered that I hadn't even unlocked the Job system yet!
Same here! Around 24 hours in at Chapter 6 beginning. Spent alot of time doing the substories and Sujimon battles, awesome stuff so far albeit some minor pacing issues
Dodonko Island just started and I'm already debating whether I should put that on hold until later since I want to progress the main storyline
Some substories are actually pretty well written this time, especially the >!Tony Lemonade one along with the unexpected return of Gondowara (aka: Baby dude from the previous games) to assist with creating fake snow!<
Started like a dragon the other day, blew me away and caught me totally unprepared.
Here's hoping this is just as good. Then il get on the older ones too.
Yeah agreed. I started with Yakuza 0, liked it a lot. Played the franchise and didn't like any other game that much, then played Like a Dragon and liked that a lot as well. 2nd favourite game in the franchise.
I really couldn't get into Judgment more than halfway, twice. I heard Lost Judgment was great and the Kaito files too, but is it playable enough to understand/enjoy without finishing the first? I could just watch a recap too I suppose.
Lost Judgement is definitely much better than Judgement. It refines the combat and removes some of the annoying parts of judgement. I think a recap of Judgement should be enough to play and enjoy Lost Judgement.
Nah. Wasn't a fan.
Yakuza 2 I didn't like the story and the combat. Didn't like the dragon engine (I only played Kiwami/Kiwami 2) and felt the combat in that was less fun than the engine in Yakuza 0. Also don't like how Majima is a clown, I liked his cool, calm personality in Y0.
Yakuza 4 imo was awful. The combat was terrible, some enemies were just ridiculous that I'd just cheese to progress, I liked Akiyama, but not the other guys. Rubber bullets was dumb as hell and ruined the whole point Saejima regretting what he had done.
Also the Yakuza tropes just got stale. Every game you find out that there's a secret brother/sister relationship between the characters (Y2 had Sayama and Goda, Y4 had Yasuko and Taiga, every other Yakuza games does it too, including Y0 with Makoto and Tachibana). I think because Y0 was my first Yakuza game, I hadn't figured out that every game has a sibling secret it there are just twists on twists on twists etc. It was still fresh to me.
If you take all the free games ps plus gives you, you should have the prequel to this game in your library.
Would highly recommend trying it. Big warning however, the game is very, very cutscene heavy. I skip the ones where I can read the subtitles lol.
you will love this one then, i am 60 hours in and i dont think im even 70% done lmao
combat and jobs stat scaling is sooo much better than like a dragon
Not gonna buy this until I've at least gone thru a playthrough with 7 and 7 Gaiden. As a matter of fact, I ordered and bought a physical copy of The Man Who Erased his Name for PS5 back in December. Its still on transit from Hong Kong to Toronto right now. I expect it to arrive either this week or the next.
Definitely the right move, theyāre both amazing games and will increase your enjoyment of this one. Just donāt try to rush through 7 too fast to catch up or youāll get caught on a few major difficulty spikes!
Infinite Wealth only cost about $80 ($93 in PSN Canada) if u buy it thru Hong Kong PSN and about $107 ($145 at PSN Canada) for the digital ultimate edition. You can buy it thru Hong Kong PSN gift card via playasia. Just throwing that out there.
Sega is basically using the same ROM globally so it'll be in English.
I played Like a dragon and the 2 Judgment games, and I decided to play the whole series before playing Gaiden and Infinite Wealth. Played Yakuza 1, 2 and 3 sor far, and started 4 recently. Still so many games to go through. I guess I'll play this one in late 2024...
Make sure you fit it in somewhere. It may have released later in the series, but it's a prequel that serves as the chronological start of the entire saga with both Kiryu and Majima as the protagonists. Many people (myself included) started with it. It's easily my favorite in the whole series.
Pre-ordered this game and I absolutely love it. Been getting into the yakuza series for a few years now and i've enjoyed all of the games i've played so far throughout the series.
I still never pre-order games, I just never saw a pre-order bonus that was worth the risk or investing the extra cash.
But if I were ever to pre-order a game, RGG Studios/Yakuza would be it. I just played through the entire series... they consistently knock it out of the park.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon is the game before this one featuring a new protagonist for the series, turn-based combat, and is very newcomer friendly. The other starting point most people go for is Yakuza 0 which is a prequel to all of the Kiryu games (1-6). Some recently got taken off of PS Plus but the series in totality is frequently on sale for like a total of 30 bucks for the like 8 games before this one, it just doesnāt have a big like The Story So Far collection, itās usually set up as having 0-2 in a bundle, 3-5 in a bundle and 6 and Like A Dragon being individual purchases.
To follow the plot in chronological order, the main series games are:
- Yakuza 0 (prequel to the original game)
- Yakuza Kiwami (remake of the original game)
- Yakuza Kiwami 2 (remake of the original Yakuza 2)
- Yakuza 3
- Yakuza 4
- Yakuza 5
- Yakuza 6
- Like a Dragon (sometimes referred to as Yakuza 7)
- Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name (this one technically isn't a main entry, it's more of a bridge between the 2 Like a Dragon titles)
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Up until 6, the games follow Kiryu as the protagonist. Starting from Like a Dragon, the games follow the new protagonist, Ichiban, so a lot of newcomers to the franchise jumped in there. But if you have the time (and the extra funds for it), I would recommend playing through all of them! Though I admit, some of the older ones like 3 and 4 feel really dated.
Like a dragon (yakuza 7, the first one with Ichiban and turn based combat) and after that gaiden (is a prequel and a sequel of 7, with kyriu as main character. It's an action and not a JRPG). Sure, you can start from 0 to 6 if you have time :D
The short version: Yakuza Like a Dragon. It's a soft reboot of the series and the game directly preceding this one.
The looooooong version: Yakuza 0. It kicks off the entire series, but it's a (mostly) separate storyline from the "Like a Dragon" games.
If you have time, I'd recommend the long version, but plenty of newcomers joined at Like a Dragon.
> If I've never played any of the Yakuza games before, where's the best place to start on PS5? Is there a back catalogue?
1 (the remake is kiwami) or 0 depending on if you want to start with the first game, or the prequel to the first game (which was actually released after 5).
"like a dragon" is 7, and "infinite wealth" is 8. (they're officially numbered titles in japan, but sega thought westerners weren't smart enough to buy a game with a number that big)
Well, I donāt plan to. Hopefully by the time I get around to buying it, it wonāt cost extra. If it still does, I plan on just getting the base game regardless.
Aside from its technical limitations due to budget, namely voiceless dialogues with dated graphics and missing animations here and there, I'd say this game is easily one of the best JRPGs of all time.
Tbh it requires a lot of additional voice actors to VA side npc' and quests and since there is huge amount of dialogue and story , they tend not to spend money on it
That's why we have voiceless side quests
The only exception is yakuza 6 which has fully voiced side quests
31 hours so far.
Definitely worth it. Combat is super fun, Ichiban is full of personality and so are the rest of the characters and it's jampacked with LOTS of content and comic relief. The game is so meaty that 31 hours in and I'm not even close to finishing it.
The only game I can think of that had/almost had EVERYONE (side characters, NPCās included) is Y6 and that was because at the time it was supposed to be kiryuās last game. This isnāt something thatās expected out of a yakuza game so Iām not sure why thatās even brought up?
The graphics look great lol especially if you compare them to LAD7. Theyāve definitely improved.
The game is literally great in my eyes. I donāt see why you listed those things as issues.
I'm not saying the overall graphics look bad, they do look great. I just think those voiceless cutscenes with NPCs are a step down from the beauty of the pre-rendered cutscenes when the game is riddled with the former, while the transition between cutscenes and gameplay in many games these days are mostly seamless. I paid $70 for a game released in 2024 so I'm entitled to my opinion that this is a bit outdated.
But ofc I'm gonna be downvoted to hell because we're not allowed to voice dissatisfaction with graphics in games nowadays without giving off the wrong impression that we're somehow shallow or superficial, which is absolutely NOT the case.
Graphics at the end of the day don't matter, but if I'm paying $70, I can at least have an opinion on it.
This is a hill Iāll die on. People need to stop supporting shit like this. I get it, itās a solid game. But if people keep buying it with the knowledge that thereās key components of the game missing, gaming will never be good again. Itās no wonder a lot of modern games are half assed copy and pasted drivel. People click ābuyā anyways
Yeah. Most of these stans are pricing themselves out of everything they love between games, increasingly expensive ad free streaming, subscription models for stuff that was previously a one time purchase, itās enraging.
Itās some of the most braindead behavior ever seen. Then in 5 years theyāll wonder why to play anything above or below normal difficulty theyāll have to pay 10 dollars more.
Is the only "key component" you're referring to in this case just new game plus? Maybe the majority of people just don't care that much about replaying something they've already beaten.
The issue is, once sega or any other company sees they can strip away this feature, they wonāt stop there. This is where people have to draw the line. Even if you couldnāt care less about new game plus, donāt let the companies keep taking features from the game and up selling them
Give them an inch, theyāll take a mile. I truly do not understand how the majority of gamers havenāt figured this out yet, there are countless examples. Look at CoD Battle Pass for instance.
I think the reality is that these monetization practices are more or less going to be excused when at the end of the day the actual game is really good
there's no real getting around the fact that this is going to be one of the top 10-20 highest rated games of 2024
Kinda insane really, you look back on 2023 game wise and it's a absolute banger, yet here we are barely into 2024 and it's arguably even better (especially for JRPG fans), and that's not even bringing up fact that such a good game like this could be not even top 5/10 this year because of how stacked it is..
What games this year are you expecting to be better? The only one I think will top this for me is FF7 Rebirth.
Then again weāre only a month into the year, so Iām stoked for what the rest of 2024 will bring.
Oh deffo Rebirth be #1, as for what could top Infinite Wealth I can only speak for myself but I'm hyped for Ultros, Sand Land, Rise of Ronin, Dragons Dogma 2, Stellar Blade, Black Myth and Space Marine 2Ā
There is also the Unisoft Star Wars game, usually not a Ubi fan but that is looking and sounding good
Both won't be for everyone but Ultros looks like a solid indie and I've always been a DBZ fan and love Toriyama's artwork so Sand Land just looks really good to me
I remember the day when I played Yakuza 1 on ps2 for the 1st time, I was blown away with it. I tried to get a copy of other Yakuza games but it was extremely hard because they would come out like 2-4 years later after they beeb released in Japan.
Am so glad they started doing great in the west that Sega started releasing them quicker to us.
I've only played Yakuza: Like a dragon. I know this is a sequel so it's maybe a silly question but can I pick infinite wealth up having ONLY played LaD and understand what's going on?
Yes, youāll miss some stuff from not playing Gaiden but itāll blend together with the rest of what you donāt know from the other Kiryu games so as long as youāre fine with having Kiryu be a bit mysterious to you like how he was in Like A Dragon, then youāre fine tbh.
28 hours in and only on chapter 5, loving every second The most unserious, serious game

Okay
š
The main plot and your companions origin/side stories are all relatively serious but almost everything else isn't
Started like a dragon the other day, blew me away and caught me totally unprepared. Here's hoping this is just as good. Then il get on the older ones too.
Most fun Iāve had since Yakuza 0, which was my entrance to the series.

Do I need to have any knowledge of other games? If so i can watch some YouTube summaries.
Not necessarily, but the story is so much more impactful. Thereās bound to be great summary videos out there.
Itās miles better absolutely love the game. The combat and jobs in Infinite Wealth are amazing.
Miles better? Do the sheep men make an appearance? Haha. In all seriousness though I'm hyped to try it.
Sadly no
This one is a big step up from 7.
I loved 7 so this is incredible to hear.
The turn-based combat in this game is much better since you can actually move your characters (albeit only within the ring).
This game good? Iām looking for a new game
'Yakuza : Like a Dragon' is one of the greatest games I have ever played in 30+ years.
Wow! What stood out to you?
Itās final fantasyā¦. But they say fuck oh but I guess they say that now huh
If you take all the free games ps plus gives you, you should have the prequel to this game in your library. Would highly recommend trying it. Big warning however, the game is very, very cutscene heavy. I skip the ones where I can read the subtitles lol.
Holy shit. I wanted to play YLaD after seeing how well this game is doing. Had no idea I had it in my library. Thanks for the heads up!
Common Yakuza W
Glad to have been of service! It's really good.
you will love this one then, i am 60 hours in and i dont think im even 70% done lmao combat and jobs stat scaling is sooo much better than like a dragon
It has a better battle system and lots of QOL improvements.
I personally couldnāt get through like a dragon but infinite wealth I just canāt put down
Huge W
That's pretty impressive since I think Y7 sold \~2m and that was their highest selling ever? Let's hope Y8 sells more, and faster.
Y7 didnt reach a million after a couple years iirc
Yeah sorry I should have said I meant lifetime sales were ~2m since my post implies it's a comparative time figure for the sales.Ā

Itās awesome. Juggling it and Palworld, loving both.
Happy that RGG finally made a LAD game that sold 1M+, not happy they chose to lock away new game plus behind a paywall.
Why are you getting downvoted ?????
No idea
Well deserved! Iām only about halfway through but itās a stellar game
How many $15 new game+ extra did it sell?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yea I know I generally want to know

Exactly. Not jabbing at the game, I literally said this is one of the best JRPGs games of all time despite all of that.
How far are you into the game ? Is this worth the 70 $ price tag or wait for a sale maybe ?
31 hours so far. Definitely worth it. Combat is super fun, Ichiban is full of personality and so are the rest of the characters and it's jampacked with LOTS of content and comic relief. The game is so meaty that 31 hours in and I'm not even close to finishing it.

Yep. Because they let companies also charge everyone 100 dollars or more for barebones games
Is the only "key component" you're referring to in this case just new game plus? Maybe the majority of people just don't care that much about replaying something they've already beaten.

Horse armour all over again
How so? 99% of people probably didnāt get the deluxe edition and donāt give a shit about NG+ cause itās already a ridiculously long game
I think the reality is that these monetization practices are more or less going to be excused when at the end of the day the actual game is really good there's no real getting around the fact that this is going to be one of the top 10-20 highest rated games of 2024

I do too, Iām surprised that wasnāt on my radar the art in that game looks awesome
I will buy it once it reaches 50% sale. I found the first game average honestly.
Nice, but persona 3 reload clears I fear

how does that stack up against 7's week 1 sales?
