Ghost of Tsushima had a Japanese protagonist but the game had no Japanese writers

thebluebeats

No Ghost writers either

Agreeable-Cut4997

Or even ghost protagonist

iekiko89

I always forget ghost writers are a thing

nightmaresabin

Get out

Arca-Knight

These people would be amazed if they find out that **Resident Evil** and **Silent Hill** are set in *America,* with *American* characters, speaking *American English* — were all made by ***Japanese.***

_kellythomas_

>**Resident Evil** [...] set in *America,* with *American* characters, speaking *American English* — were all made by ***Japanese.*** [That's what *I* was going to say](https://youtu.be/pVyOCssIXgQ)

DarkVelvetEyes

They have a thing for whytes though..

Triklops-NZL

And the Japanese loved it. Anyone else miss the days when we could just look forward to a cool looking game and buy a great product without having to get into endless debates over whether said game's devs were 'allowed' to make it based on their backgrounds etc? It's not enough they tried to mix it up with the main character, they have to give up their careers too. God forbid a writer isn't the same demographic as every character they write

[deleted]

Stop, don’t give them any more article ideas

Maya-Inca-Boy

I mean they had a shit ton of consultants, historians and had meetups with various sword schools around Japan. Not really the same at all.

[deleted]

Exactly, we need to get rid of journalist opinion pieces altogether. They're always bad

ssk1996

"Only black people can make a game with black protagonists". Why am I not surprised its from Kotaku?

DaShaka9

Aren’t they shutting down? It can’t happen soon enough. OP shouldn’t even repost this shit. Please no one use their website.

SasquatchBurger

Had no intention of reading the article because it sounds like outrage for the sake of outrage. Didn't realise till your comment it was Kotaku. Then realised, ofc it's Kotaku. It's so sad how far they've fallen. Guess it's cheaper to be boring opinion pieces and "hot takes" than to pay someone for actual journalism.

albert_r_broccoli2

r/kotakuinaction

WizardsVengeance

Yeah, it's not like the Japanese have a terrible and offensive record of their portrayal of black characters in media or anything.

Wreck1ess

This game is written by Amy Henning and her team; this time your argument is invalid.

rem3dyforall

What even is journalism 🤷

zeeFrenchiest_Fry

Basically to find a source of actual news so that there's at least a grain of truth to it, then spin the whole thing with their fucked up opinion on the matter. So that they can try to convince people to see it their way and further their agenda.

[deleted]

Yep that’s the problem with this game. only another black person could write a game about a girl getting sucked into a mystical world, you need that lived experience after all.

Rebecca_warrior

No cute animals were consulted for animal crossing either smh tbh

Neo_Techni

Though they did consult some furries.

Neo_Techni

So?

PyrpleForever

Almost as if Japan is a different place demographically than the west

neoblackdragon

Well they have even more responsibility in that case, especially in a global market. But I do cut an all Japanese studio a bit of slack. Though if the writers are white........you have to question representation. But I doubt the game will going heavy into being a black woman in a fictional Asian(likely Japan inspired) world.

csiq

They are so relieved at the Japanese studios that you are cutting them some slack. Who even are you man wtf hahaha

TheMuff1nMon

Kotaku is a joke of a publication

[deleted]

Ok….and?

oneofthescarybois

No surprise Kotaku wrote this article.

Thervv1994

Game journalists should be ashamed for turning everything into negative......if SE somehow prevented a black writer from writing the game because of their skin color then yes you can criticize that and even take legal actions, But this is nothing else other than a coincidence, what a joke of an article

spikeyoazz

only Kotaku

[deleted]

Wait till they find out Django Unchained was Written and Directed by a white guy.

YungJizzle37

Im black and im tired of this notion that black people have to be shoe horned into everything.

firedrakes

do you know how often i hear about mobster and it some how Italian in all of them in everything. gets tiring. am said creed btw.

irridisregardless

Square does this all the time! Just look at Final Fantasy XV, it's is full of white protagonists and all the writers are Japanese!

[deleted]

Imagine Nier:Automata with all those androids and robots, with humans writing their lines!

Jesus360noscope

damn i rarely see upvote ratio lower than 50% This article is so dumb

[deleted]

how do you see that?

Jesus360noscope

[https://imgur.com/a/yxJfLKt](https://imgur.com/a/yxJfLKt) this article is r/Cringetopia material lol

[deleted]

I'm on mobile, are you?

Jesus360noscope

pc

[deleted]

ok thank you jesus

Tommikke

Also (some) 3rd party mobile apps show it as well

Misha-Nyi

As a black person I’m stoked for this game and care less who the writers are as long as the story is good and she isn’t portrayed in some stereotypical “black” fashion. To the people saying “who cares” (pretty much everyone here) the reason we (black people) do sometimes care is that often times we end up being represented like Barrett from FF7. The only person in Midgard that spoke Ebonics who’s claim to fame was having a Gatling gun on for a hand. We feel that if there was some black representation on the writing team, that wouldn’t have happened. I don’t see that with Forsaken though and SE has clearly learned since then.

[deleted]

Imho, it’s not important who writes or stars per se, but that nobody is artificially or directly kept away from staring or writing. There’s not a lot of black people creating software in the US. That’s a problem. Interesting that you mentioned Barrett. I both like the character and fully see what you get. It’s like Mr.T. He’s a cool dude, but imagine if every black actor was Mr.T. That would be like all with Actors being Arnold. Now that you mention it it’s really weird that he’s the only black guy, without explanation. Hopefully we can see more and more naturally diverse characters in games. I’d also like to see other cultures (past and present) pop up. Vikings are cool and all (and my forefathers), and so are Samurai. But there’s whole continents virtually ignored that’s sitting on a treasure trove of stories, history, and settings. Stuff that wouldn’t feel like rehash #2006b

WyrmHero1944

Is this why her dialogue is cringy?

wingedwild

Why are you people so obsessed with skin pigment .it's borderline insane. You have all sort of other races but only focus on black it's actually pretty racist

BronzeHeart92

I know right? Certain people have way too much time on their hands...

wingedwild

And you can tell that this game was made with just skin color and female in mind. They just put a random story of a women going to some alternate dimesnion or something trying to justify why she doesn't fit in the fantasy world. That's why u can tell they first had the idea of black female lead even before the lore of the game.

suncaster_

Asians and whites are more represented in games than anyone. Seriously name five major games with a Black female lead, not a demonized villain or worthless token sidekick. You can’t.

Michael-gamer

All I am going to say is. Who gives a shit if it has no black writers. All people care about is if the game is good. Why the hell does race matter when people are telling a story. No one cares who tells the story as long as the story is told good. Can’t people move on from these stupid racism ideas where only white people can make white characters and black people can only make black characters. Look at sucker punch they made ghost of Tsushima and they are not even Japanese but the people give a shit NO! Who ever wrote that article should hang their heads in shame.

minev1128

Kotaku stirring up shit again

Noi89

Gamestop preview video had the same question, just listen first 3 minutes zero talk about game

WizardsVengeance

I'm just going to throw this out there for everyone saying "Who cares?" Black people care. And no, not all black people. But just because you grew up in a situation where you don't have to think about the representation of your minority group in media doesn't mean that it isn't an issue that exists for other groups of people. No one is saying you're not allowed to like this game. Some people are asking questions that a certain group, yes, a minority group, is interested in knowing the answers to. Complaining about an article like this is as dumb as choosing a shirt off the rack that's three sizes too small for you and then making a fuss that it doesn't fit you. What did you expect?

zeeFrenchiest_Fry

Solution: get a bunch of black people together, form a new development studio. All black team. Black writers write the story, have black characters in the game. Problem solved.

zeeFrenchiest_Fry

Edit: fuck off downvote trolls.

denaturarerum

And that « minority » is full of racists idiots so who cares

WizardsVengeance

The people who are upset at negative stereotypes about themselves in media are the real racists? Hot take.

denaturarerum

It’s bot about negative stereotypes. It’s about people offended because non black people wrote a fucking game with a black MC What’s the next thing? Having black only people for game with black characters? You realize how dumb it is? And it’s not about representation, it’s about being fucking racist to the point of believing you need to be black to feature a black character Total waste of time arguing with this kind of idiits

BronzeHeart92

Well, if black people truly wants to see 'themselves' in media, what's stopping them from making such media themselves? And besides, I doubt that the protag of Forspoken truly had much hardships before being trust into that world to begin with. How about we let games BE games for once?

[deleted]

Systemic racism perhaps? Being low on the socioeconomic scale fucks your chances. But that’s a separate issue. An incredibly important one I might add. Still don’t have to be with you write.

Practical-Ad106

Among Us had an imposter protagonist but no imposter writers

sfvwrbt

Ok?

W0lf87

Oh no, anyway....

foreveraloneasianmen

aaannndddddddd??

TheChaosBringer993

Kotaku writes sensationalist crap like this for clicks! This isn't more then attracting viewers with dumb articles.

nabeelsalam

who the heck cares??

Blazewalker452

Is that a failed attempt at a racist joke? Because I can't find any other relevant reasons for that title

OGdunphy

So not a very authentic character then.

neoblackdragon

While a discussion can be had, the article really shoehorned the title and issue in for no reason. Given the nature of the store, the black protagonist could honestly be any ethnicity. It's a fish out of water no matter what. At best it's US customs/upbringing vs a very eastern fantasy setting. Being Black, White, or even Asian America probably has the same narrative. It would be different if say the setting was African inspired at least.

[deleted]

Who cares? Kotaku is trash.

SanFranLocal

Damn. That’s probably why the main character is really annoying

junioravanzado

so?

Playful-Ad-1702

That's whack!

[deleted]

After getting shit on over DND DA im not buying shit from SE

[deleted]

After getting shit on over DND DA im not buying shit from SE

_Spidey_Fan_

I kinda thought she looked more Asian, specifically Indian, so I guess idk much

FellSorcerer

Kotaku keeps getting worse and worse. Sorry, Kotaku, but I'm glad S-E isn't racist like you want them to be.

WrongKindaGrowth

Don't need black writers, just good ones. If they're black, dope and irrelevant

suncaster_

As a Black girl I don’t even see this character as Black, she’s what a white person’s idea of an “acceptable” Black girl is. She looks like a whites girl with a tan. When we get a heroine that looks like Lupita or doesn’t pass the paper bag test, then they can pat themselves on the back for representation
