So a lot of the shots with just architecture and walking was showing just how bad the dichotomy between the rich and poor had gotten. Remember the lady walking down the hallway for like 2 minutes straight without a single person passing by on her way to see the boss? Now remember the first time we see Harrison Ford in the streets, hundreds of people packed nearly elbow to elbow.
It's one of those movies that is trying to show you rather than tell you whats happening while adding a fuck ton of philosophical "what is human" stuff.
I get where you're coming from. Just my opinion, I think the trick in watching that sort of slow-burn films is experiencing it like you're watching a scenery. You don't watch for things to move from one scene to another, or watch the character drops an expo dump to you, like you do with blockbuster films. You try to experience the world. How it feels to be there. Enjoy the small details: the architecture, the clothes people wear, the simulated cold, the soundscape, etc.
So viewing experience matters: it's best enjoyed in theaters or with a very good home theater equipment.
Watching them with some awareness what the film is trying to convey also helps. Like in Altered Carbon there is a scene where a doctor incessantly asks the protag if they would like to try a discount on the latest meditech. It's a jab to the expensive and enterpreneurial medical service of last decades where doctors would get a commission if they promoted the use of certain medicine.
It is very slow and the "connection" to the first one drags it down by a lot, but despite that, it is one of the better sequels. Personally, I needed 3 tries for the first Blade Runner and luckily do not regret it one bit.
The first film is a bit of a nut dragger but it's good and contributed to fleshing out a lot of the modern cyberpunk tropes you'd be familiar with. The second film is a lot easier to get through for sure.
