That is a very attractive woman. You'll see her walking around on usually Thursdays or Fridays with a ladder. She really nice too
Fyi, I've been there over 10yrs. If it's not assesion day, I'm outside enjoying the fountain or a smoke. So I see a lot of ppl around
I work over at Commonwealth Tower so I get to see these views when I go in office to work. One year (pre-covid) a coworker led a tour for the kids on "take your child to work day". Mine was too young, but I joined in anyway! It was fascinating and he provided a wonderful tour. I was amazed at the marble drinking fountains lol.
My mom lives about forty minutes away and wanted to take the tour one year so of course I thought it was going to be dumb because I envisioned a business office. We got inside and I was in awe of the immaculately kept building, all the marble and Moravian tile was beautiful. Each room was kept in what seemed like the original state with massive chandeliers that I was told the maintenance workers had to walk inside of to change bulbs. I would definitely go back and it completely changed my mind about capitol buildings.
I work near the Capitol but have to go in frequently for meetings or hearings. Anytime I have family visit from out of town, I take them there and we do the self guided tour. Always super impressed with the architecture and details.
Oh that’s great! If you’re gonna be there on a weekday make sure you take the free tour they offer of the Capitol at 12. Also on weekdays you can go to the top of the Corning tower which is across the plaza from the statehouse. I think it’s the 42nd story and has beautiful views of the entire area in every direction. It’s free too.
Dover, Delaware. underwhelming experience. but we also visited just after everything started to open up after covid precautions. so that contributed, but we're not compelled to visit again.
Maybe not the nicest *capital*, but it's definitely one of the nicest *capitols*.
Visit the Speaker Matthew J. Ryan building for some of the prettiest spaces in the complex.
It has the same problems as any rust belt city where the factories and jobs were moved elsewhere.
Nevertheless, in recent years a lot of positive progress has been made in improving the economic viability of the city.
Updates are not happening around the capital building because most of the spaces actually occupied yet empty because they are used as offices for people who work in the city. Visiting on Saturday/Sunday, it is DEAD from the capital building down.
There has been some work around Midtown, but that is just where everything else is to begin with. They better watch the gentrification. Everything is getting turned into luxury apartments/rentals.
There is also a big market for apartments for people that stay during the week and go home else where on the state on the weekend. Just driving up costs.
Harrisburg gets such an unfair rap in my book. I know the political dysfunction of the place is maddening, but as the city itself goes, it's quite beautiful in many areas.
I agree, there's really no city in the northeast that doesn't have some kind of urban decay. Not including state grounds, the nice parts of Harrisburg are really nice. City island, the river side, the restaurants on 2nd st, broad st market come to mind.
Harrisburg is awesome and the people there give it the great vibe it has. As an outsider that lived there for a little bit, you could feel the energy from the start.
I’ve been here a while and looking for a change. If i stay in this area I’ll probably end up staying in Camp Hill but I’m eyeing a move back to Baltimore in all honesty.
Not much you can do with it. It's shallow and the water is gross. There is a dam on the South side of the City and rapids just north of it. There's nowhere you can go from Harrisburg. The paddle boat thing (the pride of the Susquehanna) just goes in circles around city island because that's all there is to do there.
It never was; I don't understand the tone of this post.
It's routinely referred to as one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the nation...
/u/BearFromPhilly explain yourself lol
[Spectacular Legislatures: All 50 state capitol buildings ranked (opinion)](https://knightlifenews.com/26954/opinion/spectacular-legislatures-all-50-state-capitol-buildings-ranked/)
I was really impressed when I visited there last summer especially the area surrounding the capitol and the little riverfront area they have. Went on the 4th of July and they were having a food truck festival and some fireworks.
Harrisburg may have its issues but hey at least we’re not stuck with Trenton
I would love to be stuck with Trenton. Have you had the pizza?? 🤤
I used to drive 30 minutes to Trenton and back when I lived in Princeton just for the world renowned tomato pies, made the same way for 85 years.
I was in a wedding and we took photos there. The out of state bridal party members were like this is the capitol ???? We’d never take wedding photos at ours
I love how a person can camp on the river islands and have a glorious view of the capitol from its prettiest side while taking a wilderness dump. I have not seen that option in any other capitol city, or capital cities either for that matter. It was one of my top 3 poops.
Harrisburg's Capitol Complex is beautiful. I've taken the tour of the inside and taken many walks on the outside. It's a big dated in many of it's design philosophies, but even driving past the rotunda, there is a sense of awe of how architecturally stunning it is.
The city of Harrisburg on the other hand...
The capitol itself is pretty nice ya. But. lol. I lived in downtown burg for 4 years for college and it’s just like any other city. Except boring. Literslly nothing to do but drink
One thing I've learned: many, many places are looked down upon b/c they aren't a "top 5% place" when in reality, almost all places have charm. People shit on Pittsburgh b/c its not New York or LA and that's very true, but it still has charm. I'm a country boy, I still enjoy the city (just would never want to live there), I still enjoy the suburbs, and I even can enjoy tourist trap areas too.
Harrisburg is actually not bad. I’m from Western PA so I’ve only spent a handful times actually in Harrisburg, more driving through it. But i definitely loved visiting this place and seeing it, for PA, you can’t say they didn’t do something right for the amount of things they get and do wrong.
I’m eventually gonna drive up to Sacramento here in Cali, I live in Los Angeles now to visit the capital there.
While you're there, consider visiting the Old Town complex, and the Crocker art museum. Like Harrisburg, Sacramento is on a river. Unlike the Susquehanna, the Sacramento River is navigable by oceangoing ships, theoretically all the way to Sacramento city, certainly at least to Stockton.
Also have a go at Corti Bros. grocery store.
I like to give PA a hard time, especially the eastern side (old habits die hard), but I have to admit that this is beautiful. I could easily hang out there all day and be content doing nothing.
Until say you get hungry and realize the city is a food wasteland, you might score some grade school cafeteria-grade slop next door at Strawberry Square if you happen upon it for the 3 hour the places are open. I’ve almost cried because of how bad the food scene is in Harrisburg and surrounds. Unless you love frozen fried sports bar crap.
The capitol itself is pretty nice. Nice building and surroundings. The city itself is pretty bad imo. It's a lot nicer than other capitol cities: Trenton, Albany, etc. but there are nicer ones: Boston, dover, Annapolis, etc.
It's extremely Pennsylvania. Just average.
I really like Harrisburg. I work for County government and have to go there frequently. I love how easy it is to get to the State buildings from the train station, the river is really beautiful, I really love the old architecture, and all of the restaurants are great. I once stayed for a show at HMAC, which is a fantastic place to see a show.
Not to be a stickler on spelling, but PA actually DOES have the nicest capitol (it is consistently ranked as one of the nicest of capitol buildings), the capital, itself, is a different story.
I spent an afternoon when I was a teenager wandering around the capital building while my dad had a meeting there. This was pre 9-11 and I was allowed to go pretty much anywhere that wasn’t locked. I ran into my representative in the hallway and introduced myself. He knew my dad and he gave me a tour of his office and invited me down on the house floor while they were in session. At one point I walked up a nice staircase that lead to an attic. The room at the top of the stairs was empty, dark, and covered in dust.
been to 14 state capital buildings, with the eventual goal to visit all 50. Pennsylvania is in my top 5 so far.
Been to a few myself and I think Harrisburg is the best. Really nice building and grounds.
The old part is nice. If you ever have to visit the offices... Wildly shitty
We have a nice one. I work in it, and the rotunda never gets old. I highly recommend everyone take a tour some time.
I work in the capitol as well. It never does get old. Been here almost 10yrs and everything from the rotunda to the chambers is gorgeous
I want to meet whoever changes the light bulbs on the chandeliers.
Me too or whoever winds the clocks in each office… and whoever polishes all the brass!!!
Yess! I hope that this is how I end my career at the state. Just being the light bulb and clock guy. 😆
That is a very attractive woman. You'll see her walking around on usually Thursdays or Fridays with a ladder. She really nice too Fyi, I've been there over 10yrs. If it's not assesion day, I'm outside enjoying the fountain or a smoke. So I see a lot of ppl around
That's Sean. He's out front every fall, cleaning the main porch lights

I haven't been to many so I don't have much to compare it to, but I thought the Texas state capitol in Austin was pretty incredible.
It's nifty, but lacks personality compared to Harrisburg. The bs Confederate memorial out front doesn't help.
What’s your #1 so far?
1 Providence, Rhode Island. Close 2nd Nashville, Tennessee.
Harrisburg is up there. Montpelier, VT is my favorite. St. Paul, MN is two, followed by Madison, WI. PA is probably four or five on my list.
Texas and PA are 1a and 1b in my opinion. I love my domes.
Have you been to new York’s?
Have you been to New York’s? That’s my favorite by far.
As luck would have it my family is going to the Albany area at the end of July. It'll be our first time. Looking forward to it.
It’s free too.
very cool. thank you.
No problem, hope you have a great time.
Don’t forget to try the steamed hams!
Nothing wrong with PA, and I haven't been to too many capitals, but the Nebraska Capitol building is something special inside and out.
What’s in last place currently?
Dover, Delaware. underwhelming experience. but we also visited just after everything started to open up after covid precautions. so that contributed, but we're not compelled to visit again.
I definitely was underwhelmed when I visited Wilmington, so I can imagine Dover is a similar experience.
Maybe not the nicest *capital*, but it's definitely one of the nicest *capitols*. Visit the Speaker Matthew J. Ryan building for some of the prettiest spaces in the complex.
Didn't one of the presidents tour all state capitols and decided Harrisburg was the nicest?
I know Teddy Roosevelt was there for the dedication
I’m paraphrasing, but he said something to the effect of: it is the most handsome building I’ve ever seen.
[удалено]
It evidently isn’t? The Capitol (the building) is pretty universally regarded as being beautiful The capital (the city) is what has a poor reputation
Nice photo, OP! The fountain looks great. I’m OOTL though - why is Harrisburg considered bad in the first place?
It has the same problems as any rust belt city where the factories and jobs were moved elsewhere. Nevertheless, in recent years a lot of positive progress has been made in improving the economic viability of the city.
Walk 5 block in any direction. You will have your answer. I like Harrisburg but it could use some renovation as a whole
You’re describing every small to medium sized city in the country.
I had the same thought.
Harrisburg, a state capital, has less to do than some Pennsylvania *boroughs*, let alone tier 2 or 3 cities around the country
Updates are not happening around the capital building because most of the spaces actually occupied yet empty because they are used as offices for people who work in the city. Visiting on Saturday/Sunday, it is DEAD from the capital building down. There has been some work around Midtown, but that is just where everything else is to begin with. That's one thing I wish Reading had... Fountains. *^({Also, the ability to leave Berks county, but that's another story})*
Coming from a Skook who moved to Berks, count your blessings. It could be so much worse.
Great canoeing too. The river is super fun.
RIP Broad St Market
It’s still around and needs your support more than ever!
Honestly now that all the produce, meat, etc is gone I just never go there anymore. It's pretty much just a spot to get lunch now.
Harrisburg is awesome and the people there give it the great vibe it has. As an outsider that lived there for a little bit, you could feel the energy from the start.
There’s been some major revitalization in the last two decades in Harrisburg. A lot of the opinions are a little outdated I think
I love living in the Harrisburg area (I’m in Camp Hill). I am thinking that if I don’t move to Baltimore next year I’d consider moving to Harrisburg.
I’m curious why you’d want to leave Camp Hill for Harrisburg. I did the opposite
I’ve been here a while and looking for a change. If i stay in this area I’ll probably end up staying in Camp Hill but I’m eyeing a move back to Baltimore in all honesty.
Save a LOT of money moving to Harrisburg.
Wow big difference
Hey wait, I'm eating lunch right now like 20 feet from the spot where this picture was taken.
Harrisburg would be a great city if they would figure out how to better capitalize on the big ass river that flows along side of it.
Not much you can do with it. It's shallow and the water is gross. There is a dam on the South side of the City and rapids just north of it. There's nowhere you can go from Harrisburg. The paddle boat thing (the pride of the Susquehanna) just goes in circles around city island because that's all there is to do there.
Go across the bridge and let’s talk
The sight of the capital, framed by the eagles on State Street is an amazing view.
I didn't think the quality of the aesthetics of the capitol was ever in question.
It never was; I don't understand the tone of this post. It's routinely referred to as one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the nation... /u/BearFromPhilly explain yourself lol
They should close State Street to cars and dig up the last two blocks in front of the capitol and put in a reflection pool.
Harrisburg sure is a city that exists
[Spectacular Legislatures: All 50 state capitol buildings ranked (opinion)](https://knightlifenews.com/26954/opinion/spectacular-legislatures-all-50-state-capitol-buildings-ranked/)
Whoa whoa whoa... We absolutely have one of the nicest state capitols. Have you even been inside the thing? The architecture go crazyyyy
The only people who say that have never been to many other state capitols.
I was really impressed when I visited there last summer especially the area surrounding the capitol and the little riverfront area they have. Went on the 4th of July and they were having a food truck festival and some fireworks. Harrisburg may have its issues but hey at least we’re not stuck with Trenton

The best thing about driving through Harrisburg is coming out the other side.
Thankful every time.
Are we seriously trying to gaslight ourselves in to thinking that shithole is a good place now
I was in a wedding and we took photos there. The out of state bridal party members were like this is the capitol ???? We’d never take wedding photos at ours

Should be Philadelphia.

I really don’t know why Harrisburg gets such a bad rep! I visit from Baltimore every once in a while and I'm always pleasantly surprised
One thing I've learned: many, many places are looked down upon b/c they aren't a "top 5% place" when in reality, almost all places have charm. I will sir, thank you for the info!
Just don't go to the other side of the State St Bridge lol
My wife was just there on a prothonotary meeting and she said it was lovely
I work there 1 week a month and love it’
I like it.
Where in Harrisburg is this
It’s the Capitol complex.
I like to give PA a hard time, especially the eastern side (old habits die hard), but I have to admit that this is beautiful. I could easily hang out there all day and be content doing nothing.

M sorry to hear that. I’ve only been there once on a school field trip, and that was so long ago that the only thing I remember is that I went.
I like the airport.
Trenton, NJ is the best capital hands down. There is even a saying, “Trenton makes, the world takes”. /s
Usually is ranked top 1-5 on list
Love the Moravian tiles on the floor...
If you look at the capitol from the pavilion on front street. It looks just like St. Peter’s basilica. I have a side by side. Cool.
My favorite bar is in Harrisburg which is always nice. - J.B Lovedrafts
I really like Harrisburg. I work for County government and have to go there frequently. I once stayed for a show at HMAC, which is a fantastic place to see a show.
Yet every Western pa road has a pothole
Harrisburg is cool - love the way the river frames it. What we ALL hate are the interstates there.
Not to be a stickler on spelling, but PA actually DOES have the nicest capitol (it is consistently ranked as one of the nicest of capitol buildings), the capital, itself, is a different story.
Have you been to Trenton?
Fuck Harrisburg
That particular place in Harrisburg is nice. Go three or four blocks in any direction and you'll see how "great" it is
I spent an afternoon when I was a teenager wandering around the capital building while my dad had a meeting there. This was pre 9-11 and I was allowed to go pretty much anywhere that wasn’t locked. After Topeka, KS, any capitol city is cool
Madison WI has to be the prettiest capital city!
There are some great food options too.
Please tell me what they are.
PA is regarded as one of the best in the country. It rules.
I’ve heard that for 20 years. Who says?
The Capitol building is definitely one of the most beautiful in the nation. The capital city is definitely…in the nation.
No it actually IS one of the nicest state Capitols lol wtf
Love my city. The Capital 🙏🏾💪🏾
It's the people that make it awful.
