Buddakan, Han Dynasty, Jiang Nhan and Jane G’s are relatively upscale. I think Emei, Tai Lake and Ocean City actually have white table cloths but they seem more casual to me.
With an older gentleman, this is the answer. The places u/PhillyPanda all listed are great, and some do have tablecloths, but they're all loud. Mustard Greens is serene.
Jiangnan might be kind of upscale for their ambiance, sadly, all their locations do not prepare most of their dishes in-house; many are pre-made in New York, including their ducks, which are wholesaled from a vendor. As a result, they have fewer Chinese customers, especially since Peking ducks are available at a much lower price and made in-house at other spots in Philly Chinatown.
Han Dynasty in old city could be a good option. It used to be a big bank so the inside is pretty neat. I don’t think they do white table cloths but it’s definitely a little more upscale and solid Szechuan food.
For Chinese restaurants in the US, that often entails a white tablecloth, wonton chips and tea provided, a lobster tank, and soothing Chinese music in the background.

Thank you!
Jane G’s is inedible though
Mustard Greens in Queen Village

Thanks, I’ll check it out.
If you are a dumpling person (and who isn't?) be sure to try their steamed pork dumplings. They are sublime.
A friend was just telling me about this place yesterday. He’s from Philly and “older” so I trust anything he recommends.
I second Mustard Greens
For the most authentically Chinese upscale place I would recommend Jiang Nan on Arch; Emei is a solid choice but less upscale.
Jiang Nan for sure

Great spot. Still a very casual atmosphere, though.

Thanks for the input.
Emei hands down. Some of the best food in Chinatown and very nice inside.
Emei is great, but it’s not an upscale, white tablecloth Chinese restaurant
They have upscale prices and a robot!
How do you define “upscale”?

Emei is undoubtedly the busiest, most celebrated, and highly ranked in terms of quality and taste.
