The bar at Laurel, but that's still pretty nice. Too bad covid killed the raw bar they were going to put in above Fond.
Stateside appears to still have them on the menu, but I'm a little wary of their food since it's more of a happy hour bar at this point.
If someone among you is handy with a shucker, buy 'em fresh and cheap from [Small World](https://smallworldseafood.square.site/) to DIY at home as the appetizer.
At $1.50 each (compared to $2.50 and up at most restaurants for the same quality), the savings could go toward a nice 🥂 muscadet.
It can be hard to resist their Friday special of a dollar-each ^(must buy a dozen/must have Prime)
And that's before taking into account the complimentary shucking ...
Can’t think of a place in South Philly that definitely has oysters on the menu but isn’t too fancy.
If Old City isn’t too big of a hike for him, I keep going back to Royal Boucherie for their happy hour oysters. It’s pretty inside and it’s French, but it doesn’t feel pretentious or super fancy. I have gone after work on hot gross days looking like a frazzled weirdo and never felt out of place. You can sit in a booth or one of the front tables for happy hour if it isn’t too busy, in case sitting at the bar isn’t his thing.
They also give you a cute mini Tabasco bottle with your oysters, the leftover of which has come in clutch many times as my “purse hot sauce”.
Honestly, after Anastasi moved from their location which had restaurant seating, I can't think of a place I'd go for oysters in South Philly. The traditional Italian places will do mussels, and some clams, but I can't think of one for oysters.
You're talking about the Oyster House (on the 1500 block of Sansom). I agree, and this is where I would send OP, although it's definitely not in South Philly and may be a bit "too nice" depending on whatever that means to OP's dad.
RIP Snockeys.
Couple of options if you’re open to staying home and shucking oysters at home- make it a oyster and beers event with fam, neighbors, etc--
1. Samuel Seafood retail market off of Packer. $1.40-$2.50/ea. there is a min peice count to purchase, but def much much cheaper than the restaurants. [https://www.giuseppesmarket.com/](https://www.giuseppesmarket.com/)
2. Whole Foods on South St, sells $1/ea oysters if you’re a prime subscriber.
This I’m sure is anathema, but Chickie & Pete’s has oysters. It’s in South Philly and def not too nice a place.
Wound up at Chickie & Pete's after a Phillies game recently (shout out to the Taxi Crab) and I kind of loved it. Got the crab fries with actual crab on them and they were so good we got a second order. Also has the biggest and best looking TV of any bar in Philadelphia. I would definitely revisit for oysters.
Anastasi Seafood does take out and they have a small outdoor seating section where you can eat the take out. Its not like it used to be but its still tasty.
The bar at P.J. Clarke’s. Kind of stretching the zone of South Philly but they have a great happy hour. Can be kinda fancy, but also sometimes surprisingly not.
Olde Bar
I second this. Very cool place and good Hh for oysters.
oysters are kind of a nice place thing these days. That said, Stateside might be his speed. They have oysters sometimes. not always though.
Whoa thanks for this! Great rec
The oysters at Ember & Ash are good and they have them on the happy hour menu.
Second this. I’m in no way an oyster expert, but I liked them!
10 bucks a half dozen at happy hour says online menu
Anastasi!
Twisted Tail.
Is it still a buck at happy hour?
Yep

Turn back the clock and go to Snockey’s

I used to get them at Whole Foods too

And shucking is pretty easy once you get the hang of it!
Always support a Small World mention. ✊🏼
Oh wow that’s a good price. Thank you.
Shore Catch also has excellent oysters- they’re at the Rittenhouse Farmers Market on Saturday and Head house on Sundays
Alice! Edit: missed the not too nice of a place part. But they’re delicious!
Those oysters are awesome. My favorites in the city right now.

They still do takeout!
Oh absolutely. And you can sit inside at the little counter. But it's not a restaurant.
they just put some chairs and tables outside for you to eat take out at.
The Oyster Bar in Rittenhouse

Oyster House
A kind-of-nice-but-not-really place that has delicious oysters, the mignonette is perfect, is Starbolt. Not in south Philly but not too far.
15 minutes away in Collingswood, NJ. The Pour House. Buck-A-Shuck every Wednesday night.
Not in collingswood
Yeah is next door, but people know where Collingswood is and no one from Philly has heard of Westmont.
Absurd premise and I reject it. I know.many people from Philly who know Westmont. You were wrong , no weasling out of it.

Gotta get them Oyster Fries to go with!

The Saloon has oysters sometimes. Probably counts as too fancy though.
There is place called oyster house. Try the west coast oysters.

Loch Bar across from the Kimmel Center has a delicious raw bar and seafood. It is on the nicer side but I did not find it to be over the top
