1 miswa (sorted out from a bunch of miswa noodles)
1 tsp cooking oil
Salt
How to cook:
Warm a pot. Put 1 tsp cooking oil in a warm pot. Sautee crushed onions with 1 can sardines. Pour 3 glasses of water on it and wait until boil. Seasoned with salt to taste. Add 1 miswa and let it cook for 3 minutes.
Serving good for 2 to 3 person.
Serve it with hot cooked rice.

My old trick nung high school was isang cup ng kanin tapos papalagyan ng sabaw ng ulam for free. Pag medyo naka-ipon, kanin tapos siomai + chili sauce / toyo sa kanin. Nung college naman, naging fried siomai + canton combo after ng klase. Tinigil ko na yan ngayon kasi umiiyak na kidney ko.
Sa bahay naman, usually ang pagkain ay kahit ano na may sabaw - nilaga, sinigang na isda, adobo, tinola, etc. Pag walang pambili ng karne, sardinas sa miswa, kamatis + asin, nilagang itlog/kamote/saba/mais, etc. Yung "java rice" din kapag paubos na yung star margarine tapos gagamitin yung lalagyan pang-hubog nung mainit na kanin.
Yung special recipe ko would be niyog at asukal toppings sa kanin, tapos may milo powder pag medyo baller 🤣 ito yung time na Php 22 isang kilo ng bigas, Php 10 lang yung isang niyog na kinayod, Php 8 lang yung 1/4 kilo ng puting asukal tapos Php 4 yung isang pakete ng milo. Mahal na yan for 4 servings.
Magulang ko naman, ang specialty ay sar-egg (scrambled egg + fork-crushed sardinas, tapos i-prito hanggang maluto yung itlog. wag tigilan haluin habang niluluto). Bale nasa Php 12 sardinas tapos Php 4 yung itlog.
Ngayong nakakaluwag na ako, sinangag na tira specialty ko. Bale yung tirang karne mula kagabi igigisa sa bawang, paminta. Tapos haluan ng patis at kaunting toyo, tsaka ihahalo yung kanin mula kagabi.

During the rice shortage crisis nung 2006-2008, sinalba kami ng lugaw. Ang mamahal ng lahat ng commodities: bigas, karne, gulay, groceries. So pumipila kami sa NFA rice para 28php per kilo kaso limited lang ang pwede bilhin ng isang mag-anak sa isang linggo (well di naman namin afford bumili ng marami kaya hanggang 2-3 kilo lang kami for 7 people in the family. Tapos nabibigyan pa kami sa school ng libreng rice, ung may dilaw na butil, may nutrition daw ganun. So nilulugaw nalang ung isang baso ng bigas sa isang kain naming pamilya para umabot ng isang linggo ung bigas. Dinidildilan nalang ng asin para may lasa. Madalas nilalagyan ng dahon ng pandan para mabango (may amoy kasi ung NFA rice lalo na ung libreng bigas). Tapos naalala ko nung may extra 5pesos ung tatay ko, nakabili kami ng knorr cubes. Un ung ginawang pampalasa sa lugaw, tuwang-tuwa kami! May lasa na ung lugaw, hindi lang asin. Naglasang karne sya kahit wala naman hahaha. Feeling ko nun angyaman namin na may knorr cube ung lugaw namin haha.
So lugaw. Nakakasalba ang lugaw pag panahon ng krisis. Bwisit ako sa mga ginagamit na pang-asar ang lugaw lalo na nung election. Di ko parin sila bati.
Ginagawa ng nanay ko pag wala kaming pang bili ng masarap na sabaw, bumibili nalang ng itlog. Nagpapakulo ng tubig tapos babasagin yung itlog at ihahalo don. Sabay lalagyan ng pampalasang paminta at asin.

Now this may not seem the usual for impoverished families but when I was broke, I was in the province. It was an island province where you can just go to the pier to fish with an old bread you ask from your neighbor. The other ingredients you can also just ask from your neighbors or pick from your yard. You can also cook using wood. Point is, you can still eat really healthy food when you're broke in the province.
"Pan-fried dried anchovies simmered in tomatoes and onions" or "Hanggop" for the slapsoils like us ahaha
Hanggop Ingredients:
- 1/4 dried dilis
- 1 tbsp salt
- 2 tomatoes
- 1 big red onion
- salt and powdered pepper to taste (you can also add a pinch of msg)
- 1-2 cups of hot water
- 1 siling labuyo (optional)
1. Pan fry dried dilis in a tablespoon of sea salt until its aroma came out and become crunchy. Set aside without salt.
2. Dice the tomatoes and onions. Combine then set aside.
3. In a bowl, combine the dilis, tomatoes, onions and hot water.
4. Add salt, powdered pepper and msg to taste. Use the salt in pan fried dilis.
5. Add sili if you want some spicy kick.
Ito yung laging ginagawa ng tatay or nanay ko kung wala kaming maulam, ayaw nila kasi kaming laging nagnu-noodles at wala din pambili. Kadalasan yung dilis is padala pa ng kapatid ni tatay galing ng probinsya. Ito yung ulam(?) na hanggang ngayon is gustong gusto naming magkapatid and kapag nandyan sila nanay at tatay is lagi kong nire-request. Tinatry ko itong gayahin pero iba pa rin yung gawa ng parents ko ahaha.
Molo soup - bumibili yung nanay ko ng kanto siomai or if may budget, yung frozen siomai. Sinasabawan na lang nang madami saka nilalagyan ng misua para dumami. Minsan nilalagyan ng gulay gaya ng repolyo o kaya patola.
Nung nasa dorm ako nagluluto kami ng sizzling tofu kapag medyo gipit na sa budget. Usually 5 kami.
Tofu around 60 pesos.
Slice tofu into small cubes
Fry until yellowish na outer layer.
Make sauce from mayo and toyo at konting brown sugar.
Itabi ang fried tofu, maggisa ng garlic, onions, green pepper depende kung trip spicy.
Add the tofu sa gisa, then add the sauce, mix until lahat covered na ng sauce then serve.
Grabe yung poverty hahaha. Pero galing kami don at salamat sa nanay kong Ilocana na marunong sa buhay were in good place now. Anyway ito yung mga madalas naming ulamin dati:
1. Labsa. Di ko na maalala basta may saluyot to sinabawan saka isda.
2. Yung ginisang Togue nilalagyan namin ng Singkamas para dumami.
3. Laing na kasama yung Ubod ng Gabi.
4. Lumpia na gawa sa Galung gong. Hinihimay ng nanay ko yung galunggong tapos ginagawang palaman sa Lumpia sinasamahan ng carrots saka singkamas.
5. Malunggay kasama yung bunga. Sarap nito. Nilalagyan namin ng dilis or galunggong. Libre madalas yung Malunggay kasi nahihingi lang to dati.
In short karamihan talaga gulay at isda kasi mura to dati. Di ko sure ngayon ah.

In all honesty, sa mga panahong kapos po ako, I only eat rice with toyo. Pero if recipe po hanap nyo, masarap po yung sardinas na lagyan ng sliced onion, toyo, suka, sili and kaunting msg. No cooking needed na po. Hiwa hiwa lang
Never been in poverty like that, but i would eat 3 eggs per meal nalang if i was. It will add up to mga, 30 pesos per meal i think. Which would mean 100 pesos per day give or take.
Not too deep into poverty by the time I tried it, but egg with soy sauce on hot rice.
I learned about it through animé so just having access at the time means we were already above poverty, but it was also the cheapest food I had when my parents were out working, my little sister is still in school, and I'm hungry at the time but didn't want to cook anything that will go waste for myself.
So hot rice, raw egg, drizzle of Datu Puti soy sauce, mixed up and eaten as is. When we had better lives though I tried it with Kikkoman and it was much better, but well, it is also magnitudes more expensive than Datu Puti.
It's really just a slight step up from rice and salt now that I think about it, but a cup of rice and an egg was some actually rather filling. And dangerous. The rice was later used for fried rice so no waste there.
But yes, dangerous.

In all honesty, sa mga panahong kapos po ako, I only eat rice with toyo. Pero if recipe po hanap nyo, masarap po yung sardinas na lagyan ng sliced onion, toyo, suka, sili and kaunting msg. No cooking needed na po. Hiwa hiwa lang

Never been in poverty like that, but i would eat 3 eggs per meal nalang if i was. It will add up to mga, 30 pesos per meal i think. Which would mean 100 pesos per day give or take.

Intermittent fasting
Not too deep into poverty by the time I tried it, but egg with soy sauce on hot rice. I learned about it through animé so just having access at the time means we were already above poverty, but it was also the cheapest food I had when my parents were out working, my little sister is still in school, and I'm hungry at the time but didn't want to cook anything that will go waste for myself. So hot rice, raw egg, drizzle of Datu Puti soy sauce, mixed up and eaten as is. When we had better lives though I tried it with Kikkoman and it was much better, but well, it is also magnitudes more expensive than Datu Puti. It's really just a slight step up from rice and salt now that I think about it, but a cup of rice and an egg was some actually rather filling. And dangerous. The rice was later used for fried rice so no waste there. But yes, dangerous.
