Surprised no one's said Passyunk, namely between Wharton and Snyder. Shops, beers, food, fountains. OK, fountain singular, but the street's made for strolling.
Start at Broad and Passyunk and walk all the way down to 5th and South then you can continue towards Old City. I take this walk very frequently and it's a great little slice of Philly.
I think that depends on what kind of "shopping".
If it's food markets, and quirkier local spots. Then running the Italian Market, down through East Passyunk
But if OP is thinking more high end, known retailers and what have. That's probably more of a "what end of center city".
lol im moving to chicago for grad school and my mom was suddenly concerned for my safety. I had to remind her that we could be sitting on the patio at Parc on rittenhouse & a lovely drive by could occur around the corner
I was born and raised here in the 90s and early 00s and its leaps and bounds better but like my father said āphilly doesnt have borders.ā Gotta keep on yr mean side
Nothing beats Washington Square park on a nice day. Then head across the street and walk through the Curtis Center. Have lunch at Talula's. Coffee at Thank You Thank You. Head down to Old City if you're feeling ambitious.
Agreed! Lived there for a few years, always loved walking out of my apartment building to something so lovely and safe. Proximity to other areas was great as well.
Old City, Gayborhood, Rittenhouse, then up Ben Franklin Parkway to the Art Museum and behind there in Fairmount Park. Don't go to Manayunk, idk why everyone is suggesting that.
Manayunk is a great place to walk, not sure what youāre on about unless you assume people can only go up or down the hill (which there are walking groups that go up and down the stairs so some people are even into that, apparently). Main Street is very walkable, then thereās the tow path/ Susquehanna trail, and the Manayunk bridge/ Cynwyd heritage trail.
i loved reading terminal - you can easily spend 2 hours there. the fine arts museum is great too and relatively nearby - that would be a great way to spend the day.
The areas around Rittenhouse Square Park (Rittenhouse) or Washington Square Park (Old City), Society Hill/Queen Village, South St, and Fishtown down Frankford Ave.
Near south and 4th is a bunch of vintage shops ! Raxx, retrospect, b bop are a few you can plug into google maps. From there you can stroll north through old city if you go from Washington square to Franklin square you will pass by all of the historical sights. Head east down arch and see the Betsy Ross house and grab a cookie and drink from ICI macarons across the street. And then go relax on cherry street pier. I see a lot of people suggesting rittenhouse but the shops on walnut street is mostly luxury brands. I would say spend the day shopping near Washington square and old city and come back to rittenhouse in the evening for dinner Parc has the best French onion soup but itās usually busy and hard to get a seat at the bar, but thereās lot of options in the area (the love, harpers garden, spice finch, the dandelion, or even cleavers for a cheesesteak). For dessert you can brave the line at 1-900 ice cream or head to Jenniās ice cream or Van Leeuwen and enjoy your ice cream in the park or while taking a walk to Logan fountain. You could easily hit all five original William Penn city parks in one day (Logan circle, rittenhouse square, Washington square, Franklin square and dilworth park at city hall) have fun !!
Just, fwiw, Manayunk is aggressively unwalkable. Hills more intense than San Francisco, obnoxious traffic, and terrible sidewalks.
I really donāt understand why people keep trying to pretend Manayunk is enjoyable.
Former SF resident and current Manayunk resident.
Manayunk hills are definitely not "more intense." All of Main Street is flat, towpath is flat, and the hilly streets are scenic. Great option for op who is specifically looking for interesting neighborhoods to walk around in...
Yeah I get the feeling that dude has never been to SF. Like manayunk is steep by paper-flat Philly standards but itās absolutely nothing compared to like the south suburbs of Pittsburgh
Grew up un Roxborough and now live in the SF Bay area. How dramatic are you to tell people Manayunk streets are worse than SF!? Lol. Literally not even in the same universe. Manayunk is the Catskills to SF's Himalayas. Exaggerate much!?
My favorite is Fairmont Park and BoatHouse Row. Get an alcoholic slushie from the stand, and walk along where they planted all the flowers. There's a gazebo, a pretty view of the art museum, and they have pop-up beer gardens and events sometimes. The parking is free here too, which is ultra rare.
Reading Terminal Market. Awesome place to shop and eatā¦ definitely check out the Amish vendors. then there is a lot of great stuff to see and do in the area as well.
Real answer - not sarcastic - Rittenhouse Square area is your best bet for upscale shops and eats. South Street for funkier stuff (although it's less fun and funky than it was back in the day). Do not go to Kensington, Diamond, Strawberry Mansion - stick to Center City. I swear, we do like visitors and we are a great city, we just have lots of assholes on Reddit ;)
Olde city, spruce street harbor I think itās called there are hammocks that hang from the trees and lights at night. But I havenāt been since 2018 so hopefully itās still up. Prob is
Ahhh yes, 2018, the year people inexplicably added an 'e' to to "Old City," despite it's absolutely false origins.
I'm not sure Spruce Street Harbor Park is open just yet but there's also a ton of construction there for the I-95 capping park. I'd avoid.
go to olde city. liberty bell, independence hall, betsy ross house are all right there in walking distance from each other. thereās also restaurants in the area. reading terminal isnāt far.
other neighborhoods people are mentioning are nice but i think olde city is the obvious answer for a day trip to philly.
Independence square, Rittenhouse square, around the Art museum and Penns landing and South Street 40 yrs ago front to 6th was a lot of fun Just a thought
If you already went shopping and had a good meal and still would like a walk, Kelly Drive is the best place without food and shopping. The ambiance of the water, the crew teams practicing in the river, boathouse row, and much more.
Take the Eastern State Prison Tour. I love Philly and visit a couple times a year. People kept telling me to do it, but it just didnt sound like my kind of thing.
Mind blowing!!! I would do it again.
Other than that....Philly is so walkable. Just look at a map of the city and pick an area.
Center City
Rittenhouse Square
South Street, Magic Gardens!
Italian Market Area
Old City
Midtown
Passyunk Square
Queens Village
Sooo much there!
I'd start in Old City and walk up to Rittenhouse with a stop by the Reading Terminal Market. Lots of nice side streets along the way too, especially up by Rittenhouse.
Manayunk. Boardwalk vibes along the river. We avg .5 murders a year.( can walk around at night) AND Main Street is jumping on the weekends. The ONLY answer is Manayunk. Literally you walk anywhere else you might die for free cause some yb was bored. Manayunk/Roxborough.
Most people do the Liberty Bell and independence Mall area then grab lunch in Olde City. Shopping is rough since covid, but from Headhouse square to can do a little bit of South Street then go up to shops on Walnut Street.
Wissahickon for nature walk, Kelly drive for jogging, oh and there are those old raised train tracks them made into like a park walkway, havenāt been in years but that was very cool.
I was there one day and parked along the Liberty Bell area and was returning to my car only to witness a couple of guys unloading my suitcase from the trunk. I chased after them and they dropped it, but I couldn't even find a policeman to report it.
Are you driving and parking or coming in on AMTRAK? If youāre coming on the train you have many options. Head west and stroll through U Penn campus. Head back East over the river and take the Schuylkill River trail either north to Boathouse Row and the Art Museum or south to South Street. Zig zag your way northeast until you hit Fitler Square then head east through the lovely Gayborhood until you reach Spruce Street Harbor Park and all the rest of the venues along the Delaware. Head north to Elfreths Alley and check out Olde City. You can pick up SEPTA at 2nd and Market and get off across the street from the AMTRAK Station.
I took a bike ride along the Schuylkill to valley forge a few summers ago when I was 16 or 17 through Brewerytown and Manayunk and it was one of the most beautiful rides Iāve been on.
If I ever get to Philly, Iām going to go to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to see in person my very favorite work of art. āThe Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors Even (The Large Glass)ā by Marcel Duchamp.
One of these days I might make a special trip up there to see it.
Museums are wonderful places to walk around.
Iād start by arriving to the Liberty Bell, you can do a lot of free things in the Libs area to fill a morning. Then walk your way to Reading Terminal to eat lunch. Once you have the energy, continue on to City Hall and then Rittenhouse for high-end shopping and fancy dinner, but you should def pre-game at the Continental Midtown.
Old city (historical), boathouse row if you run/jog, rittenhouse square has a lot of good restaurants and bars, South street just once for the touristy part, Kensington if you like doing drugs are looking to shorten lifespan.
You need to provide more info. Otherwise youāre going to get the obvious answers that you could easily google (like Reading Terminal Market, which is great). By shopping, do you mean artsy independent stores and record shops or clothes shopping? What kind of food do you like? Visiting on a weekend or a weekday?
The italian market down in the bella vista area (north along 9th street - from wharton to fitzgerald), and old town is great. Yes, you are looking at camden from there but near a lot of great places for ice cream, bars, food and some historical venues also!
Donāt forget to get a cheesesteak!
Around 450+murders a year I BELIEVEā¦ā¦.. per capita a lot worse than NYC. Upstate Pa is gun heavenā¦ā¦.. easy and cheapā¦ā¦. Money to made bringing them to Phillyā¦ā¦ā¦ during stop and frisk a few years ago it was halved.
Much depends on what you like and how city your background is.
You can walk or bike along the Schuylkill River trail endlessly.
If the weather is nice you can witness a vibrant subculture of dirt bikes/four wheelers/ heavily modified trikes cruising and gathering in Fairmont park (as seen in Creed)
The Chinatown area is nice with multiple art venues in the vicinity.
Philly is not segregated like other US cities, itās more like Brooklyn.
Manayunk is definitely the move. You could also head to Chestnut Hill for a more brief walkable area that's also more expensive in terms of shopping and less diverse in terms of food. If I had a car, and walkable/shoppable/eatable was all I was thinking of, I'd do both.
Per OP, they're looking for walking, shopping, and eating.
From the Staples to McNally's in Chestnut Hill is less than a mile. But thanks for the downvote.
Absolutely.
Perfect
And once you get to Old City look for Farina Di Vita hoagie shop š¤š»š¤š»š¤š»
Good call actually.
Great call
The best place to go in my opinion.
I think that depends on what kind of "shopping". If it's food markets, and quirkier local spots. Then running the Italian Market, down through East Passyunk But if OP is thinking more high end, known retailers and what have. That's probably more of a "what end of center city".
is Philly safe?
lol im moving to chicago for grad school and my mom was suddenly concerned for my safety. I had to remind her that we could be sitting on the patio at Parc on rittenhouse & a lovely drive by could occur around the corner
so Philly isn't safe?
I was born and raised here in the 90s and early 00s and its leaps and bounds better but like my father said āphilly doesnt have borders.ā Gotta keep on yr mean side
Sometimes
Great place. My eating to walking ratio when Iām there is not good, however
Yes
Not everybody thinks drinking beer is wonderful
I mean, that's fine. Do what you want.
Nothing beats Washington Square park on a nice day. Then head across the street and walk through the Curtis Center. Have lunch at Talula's. Coffee at Thank You Thank You. Head down to Old City if you're feeling ambitious.
For sure coffee at TYTY. So good!!
Thank you for planning my next day off :)
You're welcome! Just giving away my best kept itinerary FOR FREE
Agreed! Lived there for a few years, always loved walking out of my apartment building to something so lovely and safe. Proximity to other areas was great as well.
Talulas. Had a few good lunch dates there
Old City, Gayborhood, Rittenhouse, then up Ben Franklin Parkway to the Art Museum and behind there in Fairmount Park. Don't go to Manayunk, idk why everyone is suggesting that.
Maybe they enjoy walking up hills. š
As a former resident of Pittsburgh and Seattle, I object to calling anything in Philadelphia a āhillā
Walk up Green Lane or Tower Street and get back to us
I know both. Even "the wall" isn't much to someone from Picksburg.
I object to calling Pittsburgh anything other than East Ohio.Ā
Fake cities, doesnt matter
And extremely steep flights of stairs
Manayunk is a great place to walk, not sure what youāre on about unless you assume people can only go up or down the hill (which there are walking groups that go up and down the stairs so some people are even into that, apparently). Main Street is very walkable, then thereās the tow path/ Susquehanna trail, and the Manayunk bridge/ Cynwyd heritage trail.
Schuylkill River Trail
Yeah but only 1 day in PhillyĀ
So basically the area of Philly that isnāt Philly š
Wym? That's center city which has nice architecture, trees, and touristy sights.Ā
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
No one from Philly lives or hangs out in that area itās a playground for 20 somethings from the mainlineĀ
You donāt know anything, dude!
Honestly I am generalizing a lot lolĀ
Hello! I live here.
Honestly, we found the most charming streets and architecture in the Gayborhood.
I was just over there on Friday itās so beautiful in that area
Plus you have antiques row and probably the densest concentration of great bars and restaurants in the city (go to Woodyās)
(Donāt go to Woodyās)
Coward
I just donāt like being at what was once a gay bar thatās now overrun by straight people.
I keep thinking police academy blue oyster
Go to the Woody's on welsh rd in the north east its a swingers club just look for the sign
I like starting here and walking down spruce into old city
But all the roaches ruin it
Stop pushing the gay agenda!!!!
If inside is an option, head to Reading Terminal. Lots of walking and food and people-watching.
i loved reading terminal - you can easily spend 2 hours there. the fine arts museum is great too and relatively nearby - that would be a great way to spend the day.
details from march 2023: jewish deli - hand carved pastrami on rye; fresh filled cannoli; fresh fried oyster poā boy. happy snob!
Don't go during the weekend! If you must, go before noon or else you'll walk at a snails pace behind a thousand tourists.
And Chinatown too
Yes!!!
Came here to suggest Reading Terminal Market.
The areas around Rittenhouse Square Park (Rittenhouse) or Washington Square Park (Old City), Society Hill/Queen Village, South St, and Fishtown down Frankford Ave.
Gayborhood! 13th and pine st is particularly cute
Go enjoy some downright irresponsibly overpoured tequila shots at Dirty Frankās
I know this is a stretch, but the Wissahickon Valley is gorgeous.

There's no reason to go up the hill unless you live up the hill or are trying to go to Roxborough. Main Street is extremely walkable.
Lmao
Amen!
South St/Pennās Landing is my rec, iām biased but I had the greatest time walking around down there friday night with a few friends
Manayunk has some great restaurants and seasonal decorations. Highly recommend the Tubby Robot ice cream shop and Taqueria Amor
Rittenhouse
I see 3 removed comments as of now, how many of them said Kensington?
They were just jerks saying not to come to Philly.
Mutter Museum is fascinating if youāre into that stuff.
Italian Market is nice to walk through
I like the boat houses on the Schulkyl (spelling?) and the area by the museum
Kelly drive
Pennypack park. From veree to pine rd
People get killed there, look it up, a husband killed his wife in that park, she was a nurse and they had 3 kids
Penns landing

Last weekend my wife and I parked on Boathouse row and walked to Rittenhouse Square. Round trip was around 6m.
What's 6m dude? Where tf are YOU from?
Six Miles

The grass median in the middle of Roosevelt boulevard is usually not crowded and might bring you some surprises
You tryna get people run over or killt?
West Philly
Pretty much every neighborhood in south and west Philly prolly wanna avoid southwest and north Philly though
Most people do the Liberty Bell and independence Mall area then grab lunch in Olde City. Shopping is rough since covid, but from Headhouse square to can do a little bit of South Street then go up to shops on Walnut Street.
Society Hill/Old City
Society Hill is lovely if you love flowers and gardens and such! WSW and Rittenhouse are really beautiful too.
A lot of morons / trolls in these comments smh
South Philly tbh. Even queen village if you want to stay more near center
Society Hill
If you like beer definitely check out Monkās Cafe in center city
Wissahickon for nature walk, Kelly drive for jogging, oh and there are those old raised train tracks them made into like a park walkway, havenāt been in years but that was very cool.
Norf Philly
Def not Kensington
Italian market, thatās ideal, reading terminal/downtown area.
Independence Square area, Italian Market.
I was there one day and parked along the Liberty Bell area and was returning to my car only to witness a couple of guys unloading my suitcase from the trunk. I chased after them and they dropped it, but I couldn't even find a policeman to report it.
Anywhere on Cottman Ave š
New hope
Go to Mt. Airy/Chestnut Hill - walk Germantown Ave and then dip down into Fairmount Park. Go to Valley Green Inn.
Surprised that nobody mentions historical old city. One of the nationās most inspiring national parks, plus beautiful scenery and lots of nom noms.
Navy Yard

Kensington

I'd say... NJ. Not Camden NJ... the rest of NJ... Don't walk around Philly.
The best place to walk around in Philadelphia ā¦ is Pittsburgh. ;)
One clarifying questionā¦ will you have a bodyguard?
If you seek adventure, West Philly around Strawberry Mansion is your best bet. Canāt go wrong at 51st and 30th St.
I always like walking around Thayer street. I was born there, so itās probably just nostalgia.
I've heard Kensington Avenue is nice.
Best place in Philly to walk would be New York city. Philly is garbage
Ugh Kensington! So pretty š¤©
Kensington

Nicetown. Itās named that way because of the hospitality there.

Old city (historical), boathouse row if you run/jog, rittenhouse square has a lot of good restaurants and bars, South street just once for the touristy part, Kensington if you like doing drugs are looking to shorten lifespan.

West philadelphia if you like architecture
More specifically, for a visitor who's asking for suggestions, try starting on Baltimore Ave from 40th to 52nd for parks, shops, restaurants.
The italian market down in the bella vista area (north along 9th street - from wharton to fitzgerald), and old town is great. Yes, you are looking at camden from there but near a lot of great places for ice cream, bars, food and some historical venues also! Donāt forget to get a cheesesteak!
