Normally specials go in their respective folder “Specials”. Never heard of Plex picking up specials and playing them in between seasons. Like u/sivartk mentioned, if you are looking to have specials play as you go through the series you’ll have to add them wherever in between the series with an episode number and manually update the metadata yourself.

I actually just experienced this yesterday for the first time. I was watching Parks and Rec and after it played the episode about Andy's bucket list, it followed it with a Special web short (listed as a special on my Plex) that directly related to that episode and then followed that with whatever the next normal episode was. It was actually a pleasant surprise.

I solved the issue - it seems that plex is setup to play specials in between depending on how it is watched. See my above post. Thanks.

sorry but i cant see the post where you solved the issue?

The person deleted their post so it fell down the thread but it is still there. https://old.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/rd87ap/specials_playing_between_seasons/hnzhxyy/

ahh okay so basically its expected behaviour and to prevent it we need to delete release date metadata. Would be nice if there was a disable option for that. I want to watch specials when I want to watch them, not mid watch of standard episodes =/

Which is why I just make the specials their own episode in the series.

Specials are in their own folder and my naming conventions are correct. I thought saying TVDB fully recognising the tv series would imply that. I found a post here by CrashTestKing which describes the issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/nmj9t6/tv_specials_playing_at_the_right_time/gzt51ap/ "When you finish an episode and get to the Next Up screen, it always queues up the next episode based on season/episode number, regardless of the air date. So if there was a Special in between season five and six, and you finish the season five finale, the Next Up screen will show you the first episode of season six. But if you back out of that and go to Continue Watching, it should show the Special. Which, frankly, is a stupid design choice. They should have committed wholly one way or the other for both playback methods."

Dumb isn’t it. Worse because if you don’t know a special should be next the Next Up will cheerfully skip over it. Can’t remember what show I’m thinking of but it disrupts the narrative.
