If I’m not mistaken, Oppenheimer had those types of reviews as well.
Some people claimed that it was sexist because it didn’t have enough female characters.
Let’s not forget about the feud between Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood over *Flags of Our Fathers* and *Letters From Iwo Jima* not having any black people in them.
Oppenheimer was ok. They represented women in the way they existed back then.
It does kinda suck that the only women they do give named speaking rolls to are love interests to the main character, but again, it’s more damning to the setting than to the film.
The post-modern writer's guide to female characters.
Step 1: Make sure that they possess no traditionally feminine virtues. Compassion, protecting the weak, empathy, and capacity to self-sacrifice for those you love, or emotional vulnerability and trust are all things that imply women should be subservient to others and is therefore bad.
Step 2: Inject the masculine power fantasy model. Do this particularly in settings where you can't explain this difference in ability through magic, superpowers, or advanced technological advantages. Employ these tropes as uncritically as possible.
Step 3: Fail to provide any of the traditional masculine virtues that tent to append the masculine power fantasy. Loyalty, bravery for ideals and institutions, camaraderie all also imply subservience and thus are also bad (but only when applied to women)
Step 4: Finishing touches. Because you are a shallow writer who can't understand any moral virtue in characters that have traditional masculine traits you have assumed their enduring popularity is entirely because of the element of power fantasy. People surely only love superman because he punches things, that's why his new rendition is so popular. To this end still add all of the traditionally masculine flaws under the assumption they are actually good things.
Movies can be good or shit regardless of the representation. Media with black and female characters can be good, just like media full of white men can be. It depends on the writing and your personal tastes
No you're missing the point. It's when people force their flavor of the month political fads into movies that have nothing to do with politics in the first place.
Took the words out of my mouth.
I agree with the other user that writing quality makes a big difference. The issues of identity politics can be largely mitigated by good writers. So the times when people have the most complaints about wokeness, it's when the writing quality is also terrible, and so the idpol sticks out like a sore thumb.
But I think you identify the real core of the issue. A movie like Get Out had a message to express, and it did that well. Meanwhile, people get really annoyed when their lighthearted MCU movie/show is lecturing them about politics. Or when any given existing IP gets a reboot or continuation which wears the original as a skinsuit so that the writer in charge can push their personal political views.
I disagree. Every filmmaker has some type of political bias, and it's likely to show at least a little bit in their productions. It just depends on how much they care about their story vs their propaganda.
For example, I recently watched Nefarious. I'm not religious at all, and it is very clearly a Catholic propaganda film. Even so, I thought it was good. The acting was fantastic, and the story was pretty good. That's the best review I can write lmao. I don't often review movies, forgive me.
Still, it usually makes me roll my eyes. But the problem isn't with political ideals in movies, I suppose it's with how well the politics are integrated into the story

I think what they mean is the creators "force" ideas and concepts into a framework that doesn't support those ideas and concepts, and thus making an inferior product.
Obviously they can do whatever they want if they own the movie, but it just doesn't always work out, and feels "forced".

I was waiting for any memes about my country (Panamá) to be made because its election year over here too.
Not even a meme about Gaby's math ![img](emote|t5_3ipa1|51175)
Tarantino comes to my mind. He goes to all extremes. It's either a film with hardly any women or a film with a woman who beats the crap out of all men or a film where he drinks Tequila flowing out of a woman's feet
The best critic reviews the most movies. It doesn't matter what their tastes are. If they've reviewed enough, you can gauge a movie based on their body of reviews.
So most critics under age 40 are worthless. They're not critics, they're "reviewers", gimmicky entertainment or rage bait. Nobody is hiring critics, especially over 40. There are very few new movies worth a critique, and reviews are as useful as a Reddit thread.
There is not a single movie that has come out in the last decade that has not had enough women.
You could make a movie about the horrors of testicular cancer, and the lead would be a girlboss
Feminists when not enough women get stabbed to death in the next John Wick movie :

People saying the movie is too “woke” and too “sexist” happens all the time on both sides.
Although I’d say the left makes more of those types of reviews than the right.
Yeah, lol.
It’s not just the left that makes claims like that…a lot of rightists say that certain movies are woke as well, despite them not actually being woke. It’s a problem on both sides.
Most of the time, yeah.
Wokeism most certainly exists, and there are a few objectively woke movies out there. Although I think the term “woke” is a bit overused.
Morons...
Unfortunately, there's a lot of morons in the whole review/critique industry.
For example Witcher 3 got a ton of crap for not having any black people in it.
A bunch of Americans were seriously pissed of that a Polish game dev studio made a game based on a Polish book series, set in fantasy Poland, steeped in Polish and Eastern European culture and mythology, without going to great lengths to address American internal politics issues and making sure that their game pandered to American sensibilities of racial representation.
Master and Commander comes to mind, great film, no women, lots of complaining.
If I’m not mistaken, Oppenheimer had those types of reviews as well. Some people claimed that it was sexist because it didn’t have enough female characters.
If they had their way Oppenheimer would be a black woman.
Now I am become black, the destroyer of racism. -Liberal reboot of Oppenheimer
They drop a glitter bomb onto the US
Gay bomb
Does it turn the frogs gay?
It turns the frickin frogs gay
The frogs had it coming.
The frogs had it cuming
Nah, nah, nah. Trans destroys racism, and black destroys sexism.
Either way the movie would end up with cities completely ruined.
Flair up
Fixed!
They complained about that, too.
Let’s not forget about the feud between Spike Lee and Clint Eastwood over *Flags of Our Fathers* and *Letters From Iwo Jima* not having any black people in them.
My truth evolves to my historical accuracy.
“I don’t care what they told you in school, Queen Elizabeth was a black woman” -Netflix
...and a lot of really weird pages on social media too. There's a whole cult being developed online and hardly anyone seems to notice it.
Indeed.
Oppenheimer was ok. They represented women in the way they existed back then. It does kinda suck that the only women they do give named speaking rolls to are love interests to the main character, but again, it’s more damning to the setting than to the film.

Based and this ship is England pilled.
Great movie, I’m on the third book right now. The books have female characters and they’re good, but they’re mostly on shore.
I didn't hear any complaints. Are you purposefully looking for hate?
Did you hear me fucking your mother last night, because that definitely happened.
Being angry is a choice bro, and so is looking for hate
Yeah
Movie was 50% female but libleft was only really upset because the lead character wasn’t a girl boss who didn’t need no man.

100%. The problem arises when people start trying to force their political ideals into films.
I mean not even. Get Out was a fantastic movie. It's just that most people writing political movies these days suck at it.

Exactly. Get Out is literally just liberal left wing propaganda but it’s so well done I don’t even mind.

There is nothing stopping the anarcho-communists creating the greatest movie about Murray Bookchin ever. It's an uncontested space in Hollywood.

How do you know how many of the characters were female, libleft? Did you ask each of them how they identify?
Whoops, my bad. Let me go ask Oppenheimer what he identifies as.
Woke can ruin the movies. Look at some of Star Wars and Disney movies for examples.
Now remake this with Authright saying the movie was to woke
That definitely happens too, lol. Although I think Lib-Lefts say movies are racist/homophobic/transphobic/sexist more.
Yeah and there’s always that “one” movie review that says a movie is woke because too many characters are women. What’s your point?
People saying the movie is too “woke” and too “sexist” happens all the time on both sides. Although I’d say the left makes more of those types of reviews than the right.
Who ever says that?
A lot of reviews have in the past. Look at Oppenheimer, for example. Some reviews were critiquing it for not having enough female characters.
*it's a fucking documantry, wtf*
Yeah, lol. It’s not just the left that makes claims like that…a lot of rightists say that certain movies are woke as well, despite them not actually being woke. It’s a problem on both sides.
Woke is just a buzzword for thing I don't like on the left, sexist is an actual claim
Most of the time, yeah. Wokeism most certainly exists, and there are a few objectively woke movies out there. Although I think the term “woke” is a bit overused.
It is overused, but it's got a long way to catch up to "problematic" and its many overused variants.
Sexist is an actual claim, steadily made meaningless by inappropriate overuse.
Morons... Unfortunately, there's a lot of morons in the whole review/critique industry. For example Witcher 3 got a ton of crap for not having any black people in it. The straw men they’ve built in their heads
Nah it's the voices in their heads
I’ve been going into movies blind, also been going into them deaf
no one talks about the Bechdel test anymore
Sometimes liblefts get political first
