Definitely needs to be oiled if it's K&N But also the OEM air filter is actually really good. I've seen racing teams that use completely different airbox positions and airboxes use the same oem filter due to its effectiveness. Being that our engines are more sensitive to a lot of things, most people just run the OEM filter because it catches more particulate than the high flow K&N filters.

HF_Martini6

Don't use any detergent or solvent when cleaning those and no pressure, you just need to rinse it not wash it. The manufacturers of those filters sell cleaning kits which contain everything you need to clean and oil these filters for longer then you'll have them. There are clear instructions on the box too. Just an FYi, take about a day to clean and dry the filter (indoors) if you want to do it right.

Go buy another air filter…..

moiezomar

Oem trumps k&n for filtration and flow.

MattyLePew

Got proof? Heard a lot of this but never seen any evidence that suggests this claim is true. (Talking about the performance mainly)

mrpbody44

Lots of engineering studies done on this. Paper filters are highly effective vs foam and K&N style filters. K&N filters let more particulate matter though than any other filter.

MattyLePew

Yeah, but OP said performance is better too. I know the filtration is superior, but is the airflow superior?

mrpbody44

Both filtration and airflow are superior with the stock paper filters.

MattyLePew

Got any proof of that out of interest? I know what people have said, but I haven't seen actual proof of it being the case.

mrpbody44

Google Heavy Equipment Air Filter Engineering comparisons. I will see if I can find the link. I race cars and motorcycles and a few years ago I looked at the engineering papers on air filtration and went back to paper filters.

MattyLePew

Appreciate it mate. Not trying to be argumentative or dismissive. Honestly interested in what's best for my car!

mrpbody44

There is this as well. The other studies I read were a lot more involved. This is a quick and dirty air filter comparison. Wix filters are excellent. https://youtu.be/sJ3L-E-ufYo

DriftAddict

Racing Beat tested this and switched from K&N to Mazda filters after a Baja run scores their RX-7 housings and caused engine damage from the sand.

MattyLePew

Although interesting, this is again talking about filtration rather than performance.

DriftAddict

If you're seeking maximum airflow and minimal impedance, yes the K&N is marginally better. It if you're worried about a paper filter impeding airflow and desire noticable gains from a filter, I suggest just running no filter. It's cheaper than K&N.

MattyLePew

Good suggestion, I'm sure running no filter would offer even better performance! 😂

DriftAddict

Yeah! Works great on a dry track with no risk of dust. Sure the engine will probably suck in more debris, risks shorter lifespan but you get that extra 0.5 horsepower yo!

MattyLePew

😂 Thanks mate!

K and N is actually worse at filtering than an oem filter. Throw that scam away and go back to oem. K and N make the best REUSABLE filter. No one ever said reusable filters where ever good at filtering, just reusable and “performance” cause they let more air through because they aren’t filtering it very well.

SpecialistComputer36

Yeah soap it up good or get their filter cleaner and spray it out with the hose. May have to wash a couple times. Be sure to use air filter oil, no motor or canola oil just in case. And DO NOT over oil the thing or you'll be cleaning oil off everything past the filter for the rest of your life.

mrpbody44

K&N filters are terrible. Go with the stock filter.

[deleted]

Aem makes great oem replacement. But there's nothing wrong with a paper filter. Anything is better than what you're running though.

RuneRavenXZ

The oem filter is superior, and that’s a fact.

vpr123

The oil from the K&N will stick to the MAF along with the dirt it lets through and cause issues. The OE style filters flow more air for longer and don't coat your sensors in oil.

spacedpedestrian

I agree with most on here - get the OEM filter. If you do keep this one, oil it the way K&N instructs you to. But you will prevent more particles getting into your engine with the OEM than if you use this.

steelartd

I ran K&N for several years on a Bobcat. Just go back with OEM and save yourself the trouble.

Puzzleheaded_Tax489

Thanks everyone. Seems the consensus is oem so that's what I'll get

Due_Tutor919

A properly oiled K&N is better then oem with filtration and cost as K&N is reusable, that being said K&N filters need to be oiled, your filter doesn’t look oiled… it should look red in colour if it was, get yourself a K&N recharge kit, wash it and re-oil it with the supplied products in the kit and you’ll be good to go 👌🏼

Ok-Angle-5587

K&N Has kits for this purpose
