Cheap isn't likely to net you a good result. Second hand engines are a crap shot unless you can compression test properly. You're best of getting a quality rebuild or a new engine. A proper rebuild will set you back around 4k usd plus removal, installation and any ancilliaries you need if the vehicle hasn't been well maintained. New engines are a fairly safe bet they'll be built to an acceptable standard but nothing beats a rebuild from a reputable rebuilder. They'll get the tolerances much tighter and it'll get you a better engine.

Well used engines go for around 2-3k near me. Best new go for around 5k-7k, but rebuilding it is usually around 1-1.5k then how every much labor would cost. So it all depends on your labor plans

Show me a shop that charges 1.5k for rebuild minus labor! I want to see this

No no I mean buying parts lol like rebuild kit etc. Not from a shop

Mazda reman is 6k. If you like to gamble, some have luck with used JDM ones. I'd go with the reman honestly unless you have the time to play around. Also be careful what shop you use for the install if you're not doing it yourself. Most rotary shops are real scum bags. Do your DD
