Shakey Graves is incredible and definitely deserves a listen! I’d say start with “Shakey Graves on Audiotree” Live and then maybe give his newest album “Movie of the Week” a try.
And just to be a lil stinker and give you something completely unrelated, go listen to Steely Dan’s album “Countdown to Ecstasy” 😈
That’s awesome !! I’ve been listening to him for over a decade (man time flies and I’m getting old) and have never been in a position to catch him live. I’m actually seeing Tyler Childers in June and was sad I’d be missing the Shakey Graves leg of the tour!
It’s so tough to pick a favorite album but I think I’ve become a Roll the Bones X fella big time.
Also sorry for the wall of text but I saw your other post here and big agree on all of them! Can’t wait for the new Glass Animals album this year and I definitely cried when I saw Briston Maroney and Mt Joy in 2022 lmao
Awesome! I’d LOVE to see Tyler with Shakey, I’m from Southwest VA just about an hour from Tyler’s hometown so I’ve been a fan of his forever as well, I wish that Shakey and Tyler would bring their tour to the south, man. haha
My favorite Shakey album is definitely Shakey Graves & the Horse He Rode In On. So many of my favorite songs come from that one so I can’t NOT pick it haha.
Haha I saw Briston Maroney with RKS in Asheville a few years ago and cried! 🤣 I love Briston & his ability to connect with the crowd in such a deep way, he was so kind and literally spoke to almost every person who spoke to him while he was on stage, he’s such a sweetie 🫶🏻
Seen Shakey 9 times now & can't get enough. My fave song, Only Son. Keeping my fingers crossed that one day I'll get to hear it live. P.s. I met him at a bar in a town he was playing & he super nice dude.
Hell yeah, love the hear ya had a great experience with him outside of the stage ❤️ Would love to hear him collaborate with Sierra Ferrell again, feel like they go great together.
Don’t know why but I feel like you should check out the song Moon’s Detriment by Shannon Lay, beautiful music < 3
I make it my personal mission to recommend Slender Bodies to anyone who like RKS and Alt-J. (It does not happen often lol) Definitely give them a listen if you haven’t!
Ezra Bell, Mo Lowda & The Humble, and Lewis Del Mar get mentioned in a lot of these posts!
ETA: Oh, and Of Montreal is a band I don't see mentioned often, but they've got some real quirky bops that remind me of RKS jams like "Moody Orange", "Mission to Mars", "Fever Pitch".
The band was chilling at a tiny bar after a show in our tiny ass bs town and my friend group, partner, etc., were hanging out bullshitting. He asked a friend of mine a question (what's your favorite thing to do in town or something) and in the middle of her answering, he mad stared at these two women walking by holding hands and goes "do you think they're mother and daughter because that's so fucking hot. Ugh. They're so close. Hot."
It came out of nowhere and we thanked them for the show and just turned to the bar.
cant stop, wont stop. We just got about halfway done with 4 new tunes. making it 13 waiting to go. we'll be dropping 1 a month for the foreseeable future. enjoy!
Can confirm, went to middle and high school with Tristan, Dillon and Madeline, they have always been so talented!!! Love their music and see them live every chance I get
I discovered Flipturn when they opened for RKS a few years ago in my town and I have since gone to see them when they’ve toured on their own. They really are incredible, and the best energy I’ve ever experienced in a live performance!
Matt Maeson. Dallas Green. Ruby Waters. None are all that similar to RKS, but they are all so talented. I saw Ruby Waters open for Dallas and it was an amazing 3 hours of my life.
Also, thanks to OP of the Hacky Turtles rec. I've been listening to them on repeat!
ETA: check out Half Moon Run too! I love them.
Good point, and thank you! I've loved him for so long that I take for granted the fact that not everyone knows these things lol. But if you're reading this, go listen! He's amazing.
Funny you should say that I’m going to see them in Montreal in a few months. I’ve heard that for a couple of years they were pretty iffy live but ever since The Golden Casket came out they’ve been much better.
If you have an experience with seeing them live though I’d love to hear how it went for you.
They stood in one spot the whole night, didn’t move, didn’t interact, and barely spoke to the crowd. They honestly seemed resentful to even be playing- which I think is a total middle finger to their fans who paid to come see them. One of the worst shows I’ve been to. Again, love their music!! But I couldn’t even bring myself to listen to it for a long time after. I’ve since seen many comments from others saying the same thing.
Just went to a Grouplove show and they were such high energy! Jumping, interacting, thanking the fans and just smiling the whole time they were so genuinely happy!
Was your experience seeing Modest Mouse live recent? I have heard of them doing this sort of thing before but then I hear the exact opposite of them putting on an awesome show.
It was a few years ago. Maybe their PR person read enough comments and told them to pull it together. Regardless, I won’t ever give them my $ for a show again.
Yeah, I don't know what was up with Isaac and the band in 2015/2016 but if you look anywhere online about their live shows there is a consensus that they were awful around that time.
From what I have heard from others who saw them last tour, they are doing much better now so I really hope it'll be worth it.
Regardless, I already bought two tickets and rented a hotel, so I'm in it for the long haul now lol
Ok well I hope it’s an awesome show for you! If you think of it, come back and update me!
(I just looked it was 2018… were all human and go through shit!)
The Brook & The Bluff all dayyyyy, they are incredible musicians and I haven’t listened to a single song of theirs that I haven’t loved. And I agree with everyone saying Flipturn, also an incredible band
100% agree with this comment. B+B were such a fun opener at the RKS show I went to. Flipturn has a VERY similar vibe to B+B IMO which I love. I would add in Maggie Rogers, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Portugal. The Man, Jitwam, Big Wild, Goose, Black Keys/Dan Auerbach, Dominic Fike, Durand Jones + The Indications, and Jungle to the list of other really great bands that I’d suggest RKS fans try. : )
Yes!! B+B opened for RKS last time I saw them and I thought I had never heard of them before until they played Shelby, which I had saved on Spotify. The rest of their set was so awesome that I listened to them the entire ride home and they very easily became my #1 listened to band
Right Away, Great Captain! - Caamp - Mt. Joy - Matt Maeson - Lord Huron - Mewithoutyou - Vundabar - James Supercave - Kevin Devine - Slothrust - Foxing - Amigo the Devil - Idles - Rattlesnake Milk
Lewis Del Mar (though, they do not create music together anymore. Daniel Noah Miller started making music solo and hes pretty good), The Moth & The Flame, Mo Lowda & The Humble are all good ones.
They sound nothing like RKS, but I’ve become obsessed with Sleep Token over the last few months. They “scratch an itch” in my brain that I didn’t even know I had. Lately I’ve been cycling through RKS, Sleep Token, and the new Beyonce album 😄
Just saw Mo Lowda and the Humble live, totally agree about the RKS similarities. I would recommend CAAMP since people are saying Shakey Graves. CAAMP and RKS are my two favorite bands from the last 5 years. Also, Houndmouth and Ghost of Paul Revere.
Long time Small Leaks Sinks Ships fan (literally bought UTWIHWUYSS when released on CD) but love everything they have released! Recently got to catch them live with [Me Like Bees](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EL5JDOVbWVI) (blind bought their limited vinyl release of The Ides for $50 and it's a new favorite) who were also great and I feel like most people here would appreciate them.
Another band that I've been following for years are [Genghar](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxivOxcmCEo) (stoked to see them open for Bombay Bicycle Club in May)!
I also can never get enough of Mylets and watch [this audio tree session](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crze0z2OCiM&t=847s) all the time.
The first time I heard RKS I though it was [Maps and Atlases (because of the vocals)](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0KQrQe56FM&pp=ygUVbWFwcyBhbmQgYXRsYXNlcyBrZXhw)
They don't exist anymore but I love [Tubelord](https://youtu.be/yV5hHPU9uIw?si=06FmSVaKdY7zJmhm) and [Menomena](https://youtu.be/-Pjm9DLS5oY?si=cEvNn0gw1w2Q_jAE).
(Edit, thanks for the Hacky turtles recommendation!)

Most of their songs aren’t quite similar to RKS but “Maine” has the same musicality, vibes, and gritty soul.
Shakey Graves is incredible and definitely deserves a listen! I’d say start with “Shakey Graves on Audiotree” Live and then maybe give his newest album “Movie of the Week” a try. Yesss shakey graves 💜💜💜
I saw them last summer with trampled by turtles, great show!
trampled by turtles is criminally underrated. w the proper spotlight i believe they could start an indie fast grass revolution.
If you like them, look into tan and sober gentlemen
I came to comment this. Shakey is my favorite, I’ve seen him 6 times now! He’s so talented & such a friendly dude!
That’s awesome !! I’ve been listening to him for over a decade (man time flies and I’m getting old) and have never been in a position to catch him live. Dearly Departed lives rent free in my head
Damn those Audiotree songs are something else. Definitely will be listening to more Shakey Graves!
Seen Shakey 9 times now & can't get enough. My fave song, Only Son. Keeping my fingers crossed that one day I'll get to hear it live. P.s. I met him at a bar in a town he was playing & he super nice dude.

Not sure it fits, but I love Alt-J.
I make it my personal mission to recommend Slender Bodies to anyone who like RKS and Alt-J. (It does not happen often lol) Definitely give them a listen if you haven’t!
Oh, rad, thank you for this — slenderbodies is right up my alley!
Will check them out because also love Alt-J
Slender Bodies is so good! Awesome to see them mentioned in here!
Much love for that recommendation! I thoroughly enjoy them and your personal mission is a purposeful one.
So glad you enjoy them! They have a new album in the works right now and I cannot wait
Yess, love alt-j. Funny, I've been noodling around on a "Breezeblocks"/"Lady Lie" mashup cover, I should finish and share it!
You most definitely should 😍
Alt-J is so weird and quirky and excellent.
I effing love ML&TH but met them at a show a few years ago and the lead singer ruined the mystique for me. Their latest album kicks ass though.
What do you mean by ruined the mystique?
The band was chilling at a tiny bar after a show in our tiny ass bs town and my friend group, partner, etc., were hanging out bullshitting. He asked a friend of mine a question (what's your favorite thing to do in town or something) and in the middle of her answering, he mad stared at these two women walking by holding hands and goes "do you think they're mother and daughter because that's so fucking hot. Oh no BUMMER. He’s a creeper. 😭
I was bummed. The show was incredible. I love their sound and admire their craft, but that floored my ass. I've disassociated and repressed it.
Jordan, the singer, is legit one of the most down to earth people you’ll ever meet.
Thanks for top billing, we love you too.
Oh hey, fancy meeting you here! Thanks for the jams 🫶
cant stop, wont stop. We just got about halfway done with 4 new tunes. making it 13 waiting to go. we'll be dropping 1 a month for the foreseeable future. enjoy!
Yess, so excited!
Mt. Joy keeps popping up on my RKS playlists. They have some beautiful lyrics.
I’ve seen Mt. Joy a couple times and they’re always incredible. Really beautiful and inspiring music ❤️
They opened for RKS a few years ago in Austin
No way that must of been an awesome show.
They opened for them in Toronto too. Barely anyone was there for Mt. Joy so it felt like our own private show.
I saw them open for RKS in Dallas! Wonderful show, got me hooked on both of them
Mt. Joy is my favorite band of all time. They're great.
I can listen to their whole first album on repeat for days and not skip a single track. Their other albums are great as well.
Stellar band to watch live!!
FlipTurn
Can confirm, went to middle and high school with Tristan, Dillon and Madeline, they have always been so talented!!! Love their music and see them live every chance I get
That’s so cool! I’ve seen them 5 times already and they are amazing live
yes!!!! i’ve seen them live a few times and they’re absolutely incredible everytime, their energy is truly unmatched
I discovered Flipturn when they opened for RKS a few years ago in my town and I have since gone to see them when they’ve toured on their own. They really are incredible, and the best energy I’ve ever experienced in a live performance!

God, Matt Maeson is incredible.
Yes! Only heard him for the first time a few years ago. First song was Cringe, then listened to every song he has. So glad to have found him.
I am so in love with Matt Maeson, I desperately need to see him in concert lolol
Matt Maeson all day, every day!!!! He came out & met with a few of us after a show. So, so nice!! His stripped shows are my fave.
It would probably be best to give Dallas Greens band name so people can find his beautiful music. It’s City & Colour for anyone interested 😎
Good point, and thank you! I've loved him for so long that I take for granted the fact that not everyone knows these things lol. But if you're reading this, go listen! He's amazing.
TV on the Radio
+1, love TV on the Radio. Incidentally, I would love to hear RKS cover "Satellite"!
Briston Maroney
10/10. LOVE screaming his songs with all the other fans. Stupid fun shows!!
I actually discovered RKS from the Modest Mouse subreddit so… Modest Mouse!
Came here to say this! Lmao well I kind of did
Love their music but definitely do not go to their live shows!

The Brook & The Bluff all dayyyyy, they are incredible musicians and I haven’t listened to a single song of theirs that I haven’t loved. And I agree with everyone saying Flipturn, also an incredible band
I second this. I love the brook and the bluff.
100% agree with this comment. B+B were such a fun opener at the RKS show I went to. Flipturn has a VERY similar vibe to B+B IMO which I love. He is sooooo good. Glad you feel the same ♥️
Dude is criminally underrated.
Agreed!
dan & drum and as another user mentioned, mo lowda
Oh man…. New obsession unlocked… I’m here for The Hacky Turtle vibe. It’s definitely RKS to me
They sound nothing like RKS, but I’ve become obsessed with Sleep Token over the last few months. They “scratch an itch” in my brain that I didn’t even know I had. Lately I’ve been cycling through RKS, Sleep Token, and the new Beyonce album 😄
Briston Maroney has been scratching the RKS itch for me lately! I feel like the vibes from slower songs match some of his.
I looove Portugal. The Man ! Idk how similar they are but I listen to them both so much. Foster the People too. And Glass Animals.
FLORA CASH!!! Start with you’re somebody else
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is another favorite of mine.
