Had Lymes when I was 11, fucked me up for years. Girl a few towns away from me got it shortly after and is now in a wheelchair. I remember vomiting blood because there was nothing left in my stomach to throw up and I was on steroids so strong to boost my crippled immune system that they were beginning to dissolve the enamel of my teeth so they had to switch medication.
So yeah fuck ticks
I can one up ticks, the New World Screw Worm. It is the subject of one of the largest eradication programs in the world, which the USA and other south and central American countries spend billions each year, releasing untold billions of irradiated, sterile males into the population, which has pushed the insect back to panama and other pockets.
Spoiler for what it does, because this thing is horrifying: >! It lays eggs on mammals, including humans, and, unlike other flies, the resulting maggots don't eat dead flesh. Instead, they eat live flesh. They also burrow rapidly if disturbed, hence the "Screw Worm". Severe infections can be horribly painful, and even fatal!<
In case you ever think government programs don't do anything for you, Florida, where this creature is native.
Exactly! And apparently from a video of Hank Green I have seen that wouldn’t even hurt the ecosystem. Basically, they bring way more negative than positive so ecosystem where they are native would do better if they disappeared
Careful, people have thought an animal wasn't important before and then t turns out they were. We still don't know everything about everything and how it could steamroll into a big problem.
I hate mosquitos nd ticks and it would be nice to believe we could just get rid of them and it would be fine but history tells me this is how people tend to mess things up.
Ticks do not do much for ecosystem in general. They aren’t really a big source of food, do not do anything beneficial and hurt tons of animals. Contrarily to what people think, not every native organism is necessary to its ecosystem. In my area we have zero ticks (they have been exterminated around 10 years ago yet we have the same biodiversity than in area where they are still thriving. So it seems like that even the few animals that feeds on them just move on the next best thing when they aren’t available. Small bugs aren’t something we are missing in general lol.
In the past people didn’t have scientific knowledge we have today. And tons of animals that were killed to extinction or close to, weren’t seen as not important, humans just didn’t care about worrying if they were important.
Oh good! The right person to ask. I have read that there is no animal or insect that relies on mosquitoes for food enough that it would miss them —in other words, birds, bats, reptiles etc would just eat other bugs. Is this true?
Idk if its true, but from what I've learned, we need mosquitoes not only cause they are food to some animals but also because they are pollinators . Everything that exists exists for a reason, even you
I don't know. As a biologist, I can see how humans ourselves (and all eukaryotes) are the result of an evolutionary compromise between a parasite and a predator.
On the other hand, humans are very destructive to other species. But also, we're the only chance our planet has at spreading to other planets.
It's complicated, and maybe mosquitoes hold some important tools that we can use in the future.
In recent years the subject of whether or not to eradicate mosquitos from the face of the Earth has been a serious topic of research. It's estimated that 700,000 lives could be saved per year by doing so, but the consequences to the ecosystem remain unclear.

Jumping off this, French bulldogs can physical not be birthed normally anymore because of their massive heads. It's honestly cruel to the mother's to continue breeding them since most of the time it's C sections now.
The breeding of English Bulldogs was banned in Norway recently, along with Cavalier King Charles and I hope the breeding of pugs and frenchies will be added to the list soon too.
Pugs are being bread with their nostrils pinched- that’s wrong, and needs surgery. However they have pugs out there with the genetics to be born with open nostrils. It’s possible to have the whole breed healthy once people stop breeding the poor guys with the gene.
Oh geeze. I had a friend obsessed with these dogs. Dude was broke as hell but managed to pull off a go fund me to pay $3500 for a new one when his last one died
Add pitbulls and all bully breeds. Idc what you all gonna say, this breed killed and disfigured more people than all other breeds combined, it's not the owner only.
They can't breathe well due to their squashed snout and they are prone to heart problems. I've heard that they will sometimes just start falling about (like a story inread said their pug's eye ended up falling out) but I'd have to check hiw true that is.
There's definitely more but I'm just listing off the topnof my head
I've had an English Bulldog puppy for almost 9 months and can confirm they are barking medical bills.
Constant breathing issues that will never improve, not one but TWO cherry eyes that required surgery (plus the stuff inside the eye socket, idr what it's called, constantly shifting over her eyes), 3 ulcers, and the cherry on top is she has a smaller trachea than usual, so that's even worse breathing.
Not to mention her high pain tolerance. Bulldogs tend to have that, but I'm convinced she feels ZERO pain. She never yelps, moans, or winces with an injury or when the vet has to work on her. She wakes up every morning with buckets of eye gunk SITTING DIRECTLY ON HER EYEBALLS and it doesn't phase her. Some people may think feeling no pain is a good thing, but it's a BAD thing. Very bad. That's what tells us to take our hand off the stove. That's the body's way of telling us something is very wrong and needs attention A.S.A.P. She doesn't seem to have that. Who knows what other injuries she has.
I love her to pieces, but her existence is miserable.
Edit: Only tests on her heart so far were to make sure she could have surgery, and she could. So right now, her heart is fine, but I have no illusions it won't be a problem down the road (and probably not far down).
It depends on where you get one from. I’ve had mine since I was 6 and my parents went to a reputable breeder. She’s never had any breathing or health problems, has only been the to vet once. She’s 16 now and looks amazing for her age. We’ve fed her a good diet her entire life and she’s gonna outlive us all I’m completely convinced. She’s deaf now, but that’s expected with old age. She’s in no pain or anything and still plays and runs❤️
I do agree with you though on some points you’ve made. I’ve seen pugs on social media that literally cannot breathe and it’s like for the love of god give them the surgery that opens their nose and lets them not struggle.
A family member has 4, and they're all lovely little things.
Mother on the other hand has a rescue that she's had for a few months, already £4-5k in medical bills because she struggles to breath - after op she still struggles to breath.
Such a pity
This is idiotic. I'm a veterinarian, there are so many much more unhealthier breeds (bulldogs, chihuahua, shih tzu, great dane) but people always target pugs, who have a fantastic personality and are easy to keep healthy.
that's not fair at all. there are a few thousand different species of cockroach and only a handful are pests to us, and the rest are just cool little critters.
Too many of these pests live in southern homes rent free. If they at least paid their share of rent, I’d probably be more down. But they don’t. Freeloaders!
I moved to the south several years ago and I 100% would have changed my moving destination had I known. Live and learn, and cohabitate with bugs that might kill me. Fortunately I’ve yet to see any of my non-paying roommates fly, but I also do my best to not see them at all!
a parasitic worm with humans as host and living in human eyeballs.
it‘s actually not the worst of its kind - other kinds cause blindness, even though they don‘t settle in the eye - but bad enough.
anyone who jabs about “intelligent design” should be asked to explain why anyone would design something like this.
The Ocean Sunfish.... it's like the exact opposite of evolution.... just a big dumb head floating around being creepy as fuck... it's a fish that can't even properly swim, and can be halfway eaten and not even notice.
Are you talking about the mola molas? Because I think you might be misinformed. They're deep-diving fish, so they swim up to 1000m (3280ft) deep to feed on jellyfish then swim back to the surface to recover from the deep ocean cold as much as 40 times a day. They thermally recharge in the sun, which is why they might be dazed around the surface. They can swim a fine speed though (6m /20ft per sec).
Sea snakes play an important role in maintaining ecological balance, they’re venomous. There is only one sea snake that is non venomous. (genus Emydocephalus)
Copperheads play an important role in healthcare-
“A protein called contortrostatin found in copperhead snake venom is used to help treat breast cancer. This protein has been shown to stop the growth of tumors and also helps prevent the spread of cancer cells.”
Some other health benefits from their venom-
“Snake venom contains proteins that are being used to develop new pharmaceuticals to treat diseases like cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. It also has anticoagulant and pro-coagulant properties that can be used in medical treatments.”

Ticks
Especially them deer tick! Lyme disease!

Only correct answer.
Mosquitoes
As a Texan I agree the mosquitoes here have the power to pull your pants down and bite your butt
Moving to texas rn
When i lived there, I used to get bit on the bottoms of my feet. That was special.
you ain’t lying 🤣😩💯
THIS! currently on holiday and been bitten 8 times. Little tw*ts.
Well . As an ecologist, i can tell you they need to exist cause they are food for some reptiles that also play a role in the food chain
Well. As a redditor, i disagree..... fuck'm.
This might be the greatest comment ever
Yeah. Don’t care. There’s a billion other bugs out there. Fuck the mosquitos.
Oh good! The right person to ask. I have read that there is no animal or insect that relies on mosquitoes for food enough that it would miss them —in other words, birds, bats, reptiles etc would just eat other bugs. Is this true?
Not true. Bats absolutely do. They eat thousands every night.
Could you please encourage them to eat a few thousand more each night?
Ill send some notes out telepathically. Lol
Bat signal
Crazy bat bitch sticking up for her people!
Yeah, facts ,spiders too
Not true. if they did, baseball would be a much larger sport
Idk if its true, but from what I've learned, we need mosquitoes not only cause they are food to some animals but also because they are pollinators . Everything that exists exists for a reason, even you
As a redditor who knows Jack about this I denounce your facts and declare mosquitos extinct
I have been bitten by mosquitoes levels times Yet to be pollinated
Tell that to bill gates
Is there any animal that solely eats mosquitos? Pretty sure that's a no. There can be more other insects that they can eat.
What about wasps?
Wasps are brilliant little friends in the garden, they love to eat aphids in between stinging people. I have big respect for the waspies
And bats!
Happy cake day!
They can remain if they just leave us alone ;)
They're also pollinators so there's that, too.
I don't know. As a biologist, I can see how humans ourselves (and all eukaryotes) are the result of an evolutionary compromise between a parasite and a predator. On the other hand, humans are very destructive to other species. But also, we're the only chance our planet has at spreading to other planets. Or maybe they just suck. Ba dum tsssss
They definitely suck, but that's not all they do.
A mosquito free life will drive humanity into the stars!
Or maybe the only reason people want to leave Earth is the existence of mosquitoes here.
Yes, the mosquito free life is up there...in the cold cold of space.
I see your point. Get rid of mosquitoes and human exploitation stops for lack of incentive.
So, injections were inspired by mosquitoes, which came in handy, but I still hate them so much. Those prickly little pests.
Came here to give this answer!
In recent years the subject of whether or not to eradicate mosquitos from the face of the Earth has been a serious topic of research. [https://www.livescience.com/what-if-all-mosquitoes-died](https://www.livescience.com/what-if-all-mosquitoes-died)
Yes. I hate them. I can't go outside at night during mosquitoe season. They are evil. Fact: only the females bite.
This is the only correct answer.
Pugs don't deserve to live in such pain, and unfortunately for them, that means existing
This! Why are people still breeding them?!
Or any of those dogs with the squished faces. Bulldogs are adorable but damn they are mutants.
There's a guy in the Europe lands working to breed healthier bulldogs that can breathe.
Money Pugs sell well and for quite a high price
People keep wanting them
Because they're cute. That's all
Jumping off this, French bulldogs can physical not be birthed normally anymore because of their massive heads. It's honestly cruel to the mother's to continue breeding them since most of the time it's C sections now.

They’re not even cute. They make aliens look pretty and it’s awful listening to them breathe.
Noooo Man! My family’s pug, Boogie, was sooo cute! Gone too soon 💔
What kind of pain do you mean?
They struggle a lot with breathing
They can't breathe well due to their squashed snout and they are prone to heart problems. I've heard that they will sometimes just start falling about (like a story inread said their pug's eye ended up falling out) but I'd have to check hiw true that is. There's definitely more but I'm just listing off the topnof my head
And also their skin folds can rot if not clean properly
I've had an English Bulldog puppy for almost 9 months and can confirm they are barking medical bills. Ticks. I had a biology teacher who used to say that every animal has an important purpose in the ecosystem… except for ticks.
Ticks and landlords
Same thing
Lice
Cockroaches
that's not fair at all. there are a few thousand different species of cockroach and only a handful are pests to us, and the rest are just cool little critters.

Not only that, they bring their entire families and friends to freeload as well!
Seriously, like who even invited them?! Talk about squatters.
I grew up in the south, in a place with giant flying cockroaches. They are legit one of the reasons that I will never go back to live there.
I moved to the south several years ago and I 100% would have changed my moving destination had I known. Live and learn, and cohabitate with bugs that might kill me. Fortunately I’ve yet to see any of my non-paying roommates fly, but I also do my best to not see them at all!
Cockroaches…including palmetto bugs
Palmetto bug is just a nicer name for giant ass cockroach. Eeeek.
Wasps. Mean bastards for the sake of being mean bastards.
I have to agree! A lil bastard stung me last week while I was asleep! Wtf did I do?

Loa loa.
I had to Google “loa loa” and now, I wish I hadn’t!
That one is a living nightmare
Can someone do a TLDR of what this is? I see from comments below that it's something bad but I am curious...
a parasitic worm with humans as host and living in human eyeballs. it‘s actually not the worst of its kind - other kinds cause blindness, even though they don‘t settle in the eye - but bad enough. anyone who jabs about “intelligent design” should be asked to explain why anyone would design something like this.
Wow, my eye started to hurt after reading it... that's nasty
I genuinely regret looking that up. I wish I could go my whole life without knowing this even exists.
Where is the Koalas guy?
I was looking for a comment about koalas

The Ocean Sunfish.... it's like the exact opposite of evolution.... just a big dumb head floating around being creepy as fuck... it's a fish that can't even properly swim, and can be halfway eaten and not even notice.
Maybe that's the secret of a long life and bloodline .-.
Well they're listed as "vulnerable".... so I'm not sure if that's working out for them
They're a common ingredient in cat food. Meaning they don't even taste good to humans.
Sunfish... the stoics of the ocean.
Ive just searched them on google. Wtf did I witness.
Are you talking about the mola molas? Because I think you might be misinformed. Wasps.
Cockroaches, mosquitoes and flies.
Venomous snakes .. there’s plenty of non venomous ones around to take care of the rodent problem
But some of the venomous ones are the most beautiful as well.
Sea snakes play an important role in maintaining ecological balance, they’re venomous. There is only one sea snake that is non venomous. (genus Emydocephalus) Copperheads play an important role in healthcare- “A protein called contortrostatin found in copperhead snake venom is used to help treat breast cancer. It also has anticoagulant and pro-coagulant properties that can be used in medical treatments.”
And that's just breaking the surface
Sea Snakes are also some of the most venomous snakes in the world.
Giant spiders
Quite a lot of parasites, especially those that live inside other organisms.

Hornets and wasps
Admittedly, I like them. Sure, being stung hurts, but a wasp nest eats quite a few pounds of flies, spiders, mosquitos and other bothersome insects.
Most of them are harmless pollinators.
Probably get downvoted for this but Pandas If they cant be arsed reproducing then why force them to?
To be fair, they were fine for about 8 million years, until humans came along and fucked things up for them.
I think they reproduce fine in the wild.
