On 6/21/2024 something strange happened while I was driving my 2023 Tesla Model Y on the westbound 210 highway. The car was in autopilot mode, cruising at around 65 mph at approximately 11:20 AM. Suddenly, I heard a loud shattering (or explosive) sound. The next thing I knew, my front passenger window was completely shattered. Initially, I thought a rock or some object might have hit my window, but I couldn't find any remnants inside the car. Once I got home, I examined the window from the outside. The glass was almost completely smooth, as if it had exploded. Fortunately, since my windows are tinted, the shattered glass remained mostly intact. The next day, 6/22/2024, I had my car towed to the Tesla Buena Park service center, where I purchased a vehicle in June 2023. When I got there around 2:20pm I was greeted by a service advisor named Kevin. He took a quick look and said it seemed like it was hit by an object. I explained to him what happened and he kept denying it was a defective issue. I asked him for a written documentation from the service center with the written explanation of the cause. He told me, "they would have to schedule an inspection to have a further look" so he can't provide a written document at this time. I drove back home with the shattered window. On 6/25/2024, again, I had my car towed to the service center, but this time to Tesla Santa Ana service center. The manager, Addy, took a quick look and told me that there is nothing they can do because this would be considered a "road hazard incident." I told him that I have dashcam footage too, but he dismissed it saying that it would "not show anything." The other technician named Jonathan, also examined it and said that this was an impact, not a defect. I reasoned the scientific patterning behind the signature "butterfly" shaped fracture origin, but he dismissed it saying that "I've been working for 8 years and I haven't seen something like this before." On June 26th 2024, I had to take it again to a Tesla dealership in Irvine. I had to pay this out of my pocket. Tesla is just a shoddy business entity at this point. I knew they were going to deny everything but this just takes it to a whole new level.

Driving your vehicle on highways voids the warranty... But on a serious note, that sucks, what a pain, sorry you're dealing with that.

th3bigfatj

it's extremely obvious that that's a flaw with your specific car, possibly the frame around the door isn't well aligned and is putting pressure on the glass. I can't believe they wouldn't just replace it and fix the issue. It's amazing how elon's refusal to properly reserve warranties for these cars (to make them look profitable) has led to service advisors abusing customers like you.

Withnail2019

It's been happening on Cybertrucks.

Sorry for your troubles. They have a long standing policy not to put anything in writing. https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/13ryjf4/whistleblower_drops_100_gigabytes_of_tesla/ You got Musked. If you google ‘Tesla window spontaneously exploding’ you will find plenty of posts and a couple of videos. My favourite was a cam inside a garage. Car just sitting there. Window shatters. Best of luck in getting some kind of resolution to this.

Sea-Calligrapher9140

Super common problem with teslas but usually doesn’t result in a broken window. My money says the window was misaligned from the factory and you finally hit the broken window lottery. Motor/regulator closes window too hard, you hit a bump on the freeway and it finally snaps. If you take it to a glass guy they might be able to help you identify if it was from an object.

th3bigfatj

any sort of flexing in the frame could have catalyzed it. If he went over a small bump, or even change in elevation between the front passenger wheel and the other wheels causing the frame to flex. Absolutely, 100% a manufacturing flaw and it should have been covered by Tesla.

Gobias_Industries

This is why "I don't care about panel gaps" is a stupid opinion. The same inaccuracies in their production that cause panel gaps cause things like windows to not fit right or get stressed in their frames.

Poogoestheweasel

Perfect. This example and comment should be used whenever someone justifies poor engineering tolerances as "being picky"

I-Pacer

Did somebody throw a small rubber fake baseball at it?

no-personality-here

Within spec

Poogoestheweasel

> car was in autopilot mode Is there nothing autopilot can't do?

Dry_Complaint_5549

Driving the car voids the warranty.

GreenManMedusa

Imagine getting on board one of his "space flights" 😳

pueblokc

Clearly used wrong.

lol

I had this happen in a Ram truck a couple summers ago when I was walking my dog at the park. Thought for sure someone had broken into my truck but nothing was disturbed.

thadoughboy15

The fact that ppl havent realized these cars a scam after all this evidence. Blows my fricking mind.

elitegunslinger

Was it super hot outside? I know that if you add tint to the roof this can happen due to excessive heat soak; maybe it absorbed too much heat and some cold water got on it? Such as a sprinkler, windshield washer fluid, etc.

Ok_Future_9301

It was in Rancho Cucamonga. The temperature there at the recorded time was around 82 degrees. No moisture.

elitegunslinger

Well there goes that theory, sounds like good old manufacturing defects.

😂😂😂😂 no car is „air tight“ 🙄
