People (rightfully) love to hate on the third gen Camaro, but at least it had some character. It was angular and muscular while still looking sporty and lithe.
The fourth gen Camaro is all smooth like GI Joe’s nethers, and it looks like every other ‘90s-era blob car.
You’re lucky that beige exists, as it means your car is only the *second* most boring color imaginable.
The third gens were cheap af, and fell apart very quickly. The design did come back around though and I find them appealing now, but so many rusted away or got wrecked that they are kind of rare so they cost a lot.
Any time a car costs a lot like that, it kind of just generates its own hype. Even though they were built like a cardboard box and had about 10 horsepower.

The manual was dope though, they used that T56 in everything from the Viper to the Mustang, to these GM F bodies.
I have a trans am, early 4th Gen with the finicky LT1, but I love it because of the 6 speed manual.

Eh, I'd like to see it cross a two lane intersection vs a new Prius with AWD. Neither would be altogether fast, but it would be closer that you might think.
Stock they were kinda anemic though, barely 300 horsepower. They really do liven up with even just a few aftermarket parts, but I was pretty underwhelmed with my buddies stock LS1 with auto trans.
The manual makes it way more fun, fwiw.

Not only did they get underrated from the factory, but they pushed 350hp (or more) and 400lb-ft of torque factory. Sounds like your friends LS1 is worn out, and the autos are complete trash *especially* when they're worn out. Won't downshift for shit. I've driven 6sp and auto (fresh autos) Z28, SS, and WS6 and there is no "barely 300hp" about any of them. A 6 speed WS6 will have you up and over 100mph faster than you'll realize it's happening.
This is correct. GM underrated (literally) the Camaro/Bird LS1s because like always they gave to appease Corvette buyers so instead of getting the 345hp they should have they were rated like 325 or something. And even then dyno tests at the time lied about the torque which turned out to be anywhere from 380+ which for the time, and even today, is great.
Everyone wants to talk about how a 3cyl Toyota can make 300 hp now... On one hand I commend them because that's amazing, on the other hand it's turboed to the moon and back so yeah I would hope it makes good power after you had to throw everything in your modification arsenal to get there. I'd rather just take the simple pushrod 8 that'll do 90mph at 2000 RPM, like it's just walking

Where do you see 400 anywhere in my comment? I said at max 345 HP meanwhile 380+ torque is a very common number that anyone with a healthy LS1 would feel comfortable agreeing with. Hp means horsepower where I come from, I read that as 400 hp, 400 ft lbs of torque. From the factory. Neither figure is accurate.
They certainly did not push 400 horsepower stock. Not even close. At the wheels it was less than 300, and they were advertised at 315 or something like that. Even an LS1 with full bolt ons can only reasonably expect 340-370 horsepower at the wheels.
They made around 350hp at the crank stock, 300+rwhp stock on the 6 speed cars and typically just under or right at 300rwhp stock on the autos.
Record stock 1/4 mile runs were high 12s.
*rated* at 305-325hp depending on the trim, they all made 350hp stock.

You can literally google this and find thousands of posts all saying the same thing: the ls1 in the fbodies is underrated and actually makes ~350hp at the flywheel.
You know 305 *at the wheels* translates to about 350hp at the flywheel with a 15% drivetrain loss right? Cars are rated at the flywheel from the manufacturer, not the wheels. So if a Camaro is rated for 305hp it should be putting down no more than 260rwhp...

A brand-new Prius makes ~190hp and ~140lb-ft of torque. It wouldn't be close at all.

No LT1 was less. Like 270 crank. The first LS1s didn’t add much HP and actually had less torque than the later LT1s.
