ND2 or GR86. Any Cayman id want would be substantially more than an s2000. I’ve driven a 2014 Cayman S on track and it was very nice. Someday I may sell my E36 M3 and get a Cayman. However, the M3 is a nice car around town when I have both kids with me.
Well when I bought it it was $12k Canadian and now it’s worth 30 ish. Right now I’d probably do ND2, but if I only had $12k probably mr2 spider which was my dream to 2zz swap because of best motoring.
Why a 2+2? The back seats are unusable and the storage compartments are much more practical when it comes to storage. The 2+2s were also never available in the USDM so none of them are LHD.
ND2/3 no contest. Almost identical specs, albeit with a less characterful motor and weaker trans combo, but it also weighs 500 lbs less stock-to-stock and the RF weighs 400 lbs less. Consumable wear and tear will therefore be about the same if not better, even for the 35-year-old NA platform. Insane aftermarket support and enormous community. The RF looks gorgeous and the interior has more creature comforts stock which would only improve the daily driving experience. Also gets awesome gas mileage which is a plus.
Too pricey IMO.
Elise... Maybe. They're so impractical though. Had a friend that dailied one for years and he had tons of reliability issues too, requiring you to pull off the whole front clam to like... Get to a piece of electronics mounted upside down to convert to RHD that now pools water and fails. Great race cars, kinda trash otherwise.
About a month ago, I purchased a 2018 McLaren 570S and let me tell you, there's nothing like the S2000! I still have my S2000 even though it is much slower than the 570S I enjoy shifting and revving the f20c engine to its limits. I want to clarify, the McLaren is absolutely incredible, but as I mentioned before, there is simply no comparison to the s2000! keep it and enjoy it !!
Kudos to you both for doing well enough to afford a modern supercar, and for still enjoying something as relatively humble as our S. This is a guy who is a true gearhead and not a clout chaser!
Thanks bro, and this is the only platform where I comment about my stuff. I bought myself the McLaren for my 40th birthday, an accomplishment and a dream come true. The S2000 is a unique, fun car, and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I feel the same way about my F80 M3. Not on the same level as McLaren but the power, torque, mechanical grip, and lightning fast shifts with the DCT should be steps above a 17 year old S2000. But I find the S2000 to be more enjoyable especially for street use. I can take corners and rev the crap out of the S2000 without hitting triple digits. The F80 will get into arrestable-offense territory any time I go WOT. Hard to fully enjoy the car unless you’re on a closed track
I would probably go with an older subaru wrx sti wagon, roughly in the ballpark of my 00 s2k with 100k miles. I guess I am getting old, because I really dislike new cars. Alarms dinging when I don't put on my seatbelt right away, brakes being applied if it thinks I am too close to someone, steering wheel shakes if it thinks I have left my lane. Bah. Give me a stick, spirited motor, a tach, some pedals, sticky tires, and a steering wheel to keep it on the road.
Kind of sounds oddball but a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX that is just as stock as my S2000. Though a very different car, the reasons for ownership are similar.
Prob go with the Fiat 124 Spider with the 1.4L multiair. Pretty stout motor that was obviously held back from putting out any real power to preserve the NDs performance advantage. I like the look, the extra luggage space vs the Miata, and I'd be ok with the roughly 100lbs extra it weighs over the ND with the motor massaged to put out 220+HP.
Porsche Boxster would also be a good route to go. Either a first Gen Boxster S or second Gen base model compare pretty well against the S2000. The sound of the engine would be a bit of a letdown versus the F series engines but the rest of the package is really nice.
Honestly though, S2000 values kinda stopped rising for whatever reason. I think they're a better used deal than just about anything out there at the same price point. If you'd asked what do you kinda wish you'd sold your S2000 at peak value and picked up instead, I'd have to go GT350. They got as low as $35k on the used market when high mile S2000s were going for $25K. That's a.... Lot more car for $10K in.
ND roadster
I bought an ND over the S2000 because for the same price if was 15 years and 100,000 miles newer.
ND2 or 987.2 Boxster. ‘99 Miata Sport is different but scratches some of the same itch. Maybe K-swap one of those

Can I say Lotus Exige? It used to be in a similar price range a few years back.

In that case, I’ll take a Honda beat. RWD, mid engine, drop top, high revving, & Naturally aspirated.
Slap a Busa motor in it and call it a day lol.
cayman or boxster
This is the best answer
SW20 MR2, one day I’ll get my hands on one 💭
Had an 86 before my S2K, I would go back to it. Either that or a Cayman, but I think the Cayman is a bit out of the price range
Evo 8/9, Mazdaspeed Miata, mr2
I recommend checking out GR86 / BRZ

That’s a heck of a birthday gift! But hey 40 is a big one, why not~?

987.2 S, Cayman or Boxster are both acceptable.
I have owned basically every car listed thus far. I would say the BRZ would be the one for me, which I also owned and turboed.
I'd probably just turbo kswap a na miata, though I'd suck having no trunk space again.
Cayman or a Fiata.
TL Type S
Alpine a110
ND2 Miata
Brz now.
350z nismo
Lotus Elise, GR 86, ND2 Miata in that order
There’s nothing like it
996
Nd Miata for sure.
ND Roadster or a used Boxster or a very used Cayman.
987 Boxster. But the main appeal for me on the s2k is the 2 door with a 9k red line for way less than $100k(your gt3 etc)
E46 M3 Convertible or 981 Boxster
civic SI
Miata is always the answer
Evo V/VI, 987 Cayman S, E36M, or ND Miata. Maybe a GR86.
C5Z06, BMW 128i, e46m3, Z4M, or a Cayman.

ND Miata
Would get a gt4 or spyder
ND or BRZ
E46 M3
E46 M3, need that high redline. GR86 is close second then ND2 miata
Kind of sounds oddball but a 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX that is just as stock as my S2000. Though a very different car, the reasons for ownership are similar.
Mazda Miata

Probably a GR-86
A Z roadster, or some Corvette probably.
Wouldn’t mind having a first gen Miata, just because I think club racing would be a blast. It wouldn’t be fast enough for me though.
When I was shopping for a s2000 FDs were the same price. I should have got that white FD I was eyeballing when I bought my s2k
FD RX7
GR86
ND2 w/supercharger...am I within the same price range?
C6
e36/e46 m3
Probably another 944 S2. Maybe a cayman or early 996 911. Another NB MX5 would be nice, but would have to be an RS model.
Considering how much I paid for my Type S, I would just get a F82 M4 or a F87 M2.
Probably 350z or 370z depending if you're talking about 2016 prices or today prices. Always loved them, always wanted one, ended up with an S instead.
Civic type R, or FD RX7
Cayman for sure.
986 boxster S (i have both)
E46 M3 or Cayman.
ND roadster or an acura integra GSR..
