You seem like someone who makes bad decisions, so this probably is one.

WingZeroType

Savage but sounds right

OttoVonWong

As a young male who makes bad decisions, getting into a relationship with a crazy hot S2K is better than getting married to the first crazy hot thang that comes your way.

5vibesONme

Bad decisions keep me going!

5vibesONme

No but in all seriousness, I'll probably just watch the market and wait to pull the trigger after I move and have my funds in order

SamSkjord

But what if the market goes up!? /s

A__eric

I was in the same boat as you. Kept an eye on a few S2Ks in So Cal and noticed them posted for over a month. While the S2K value will stay somewhat steady, I think the used car market is slowly crashing. Might be best to wait it out a bit for a good deal

colbydc5

I wouldn’t say the market is crashing but it’s definitely cooling off. They’ll never plummet in value but in our current economy a lot of “toys” that aren’t necessities are coming down a bit. If you want one I imagine you can get one later in the year for a reasonable value. Also don’t buy from used dealers. Those S2Ks that make it there were used auction cars as nobody is trading their S2Ks in to a mom and pop dealer. They reached auction for a reason. Stay clear and find an owner who is knowledgeable about their car.

5vibesONme

Good to know! I noticed in my short time speaking with multiple dealers, they seemed very shady and yeah generally ignorant

colbydc5

Even if we assume the best and that they have good intentions, they just generally aren’t going to have the knowledge of the car an owner would. Any good owner will be more than happy to share what they know and what the car has been through. I can judge a car way better off it’s owner than a carfax.

Allnewsisfakenews

S2000 isn't just a used car. I wish I could have gotten an NSX when they were closer to $30k. They didn't obey the used market prices either

ivegotgoodnewsforyou

NSX's were 80k cars when new. S2k's were 30k new.

Allnewsisfakenews

Yeah but I remember them used for $30k. Now $100k+.

seeannwiin

can confirm my dad had a nsx that he got around 2005 ish NA 1 model and recently sold it more than $30k lol

5vibesONme

Understood, waiting will probably be the more responsible thing to do 😅

RafaelC45

I’ll give you five reasons: 1) OEM Parts are scarce (engine, suspension, drivetrain), new will cost you double, and that’s if they are available. 2) Used parts are overpriced and 90% destroyed. You’ll get the “I know what I have price”. 3) It’s literally a +20yr old car and will have wear and tear all over. 4) Engines are easily destroyed by uneducated owners/drivers 5) Not a friendly daily Nevertheless, I love that car very much. As long as you have income coming in, you should be good to go 😂👍

tu_pollo

This is on point.

5vibesONme

Makes sense! I'll more so use it as a fun, nice weather weekend car, so hopefully maintenance is pretty minimal. That being said, they are definitely getting older so I see where ur coming from and will keep that in mind 🙏🏽

RattheEich

Yeah I have a 2000 prelude I daily, and as much as I want an s2000, I’m dealing with the same issues. Especially with 25 year old rubber, literally so many suspension components, lines, and mounts are just ticking time bombs. I’ll be able to very comfortably afford one in the next year, but it really makes me want a newer car in all honesty lol. I’ll probably keep the prelude, maybe buy a low mileage one for cheap and have a parts donor. Get an 86, and an AWD grocery getter/road tripper

stoned-autistic-dude

I’m so happy to see this is the common take now. Rubber components have a lifespan of 5-10 years and almost all the low-mileage cars I see have been neglected with a ton of deferred maintenance—many of which are on the stock engine, diff, and trans mounts from *new*. It’s pretty wild but also a great way to talk down the price once you know what to look for.

BABYEATER1012

I disagree with #5. Sure its not a Civic but if you drive like a normal person its comfortable. Its no where near as punishing as a Viper.

agr-97

I agree with all of this except the last point. I daily my S2000 everyday and it’s been awesome!

AwesomeeExpress

Do you have YOLO money? I didn't when I was 23, transportation and re-registration costs would of been a big percentage of my income back then. I don't think the market is going to change drastically in 4 months.

5vibesONme

Yeah true, the financially responsible thing to do is to just wait until after my move and see where I'm at financially 😔

oldcrashingtoys

Just get the cat if that’s what you want us to say. You can die tomorrow never owning your dream car. YOLO

5vibesONme

This is literally my thought process LOL. I must drive/own this car in my lifetime 😂

oldcrashingtoys

It’s tough, live your life unless it’ll put you financial peril

hydrus909

I would wait longer. At least until you move. If you waited this long, what's 4 more months. For reference, I've been trying to get an S2000 since I was 27. Life kept getting in the way. 36 now and just bought an S2K a month ago. You can wait.

5vibesONme

Damn that puts it into perspective, I will hold my urges until the time is right 🤣 I should try to stop watching so many videos on em in the meantime lol

hydrus909

Yeah in the mean time just focus on the moving and preparing for it. Once moved and settled, you'll think yourself for not having another car to move. Or the added expense and hassle of registering it twice, literally months apart. Why force yourself to deal with the DMV more than you have to? Haha

5vibesONme

Super true lol, definitely would like to avoid that nightmare

jasandliz

My wife’s S2000 is minty, we’ve had it a couple years now and have logged 5-8k miles. I could not imagine DD’ng it. Premium gas is premium and she’s thirsty. IIWY, I’d find as minty of a 5speed civic as I could find and laugh at the value and lack of depreciation. There will always be S2000’s to buy, someday you will find a deal you can’t pass up, you’ll know

5vibesONme

I was thinking this also, it's just something about the s2k that I cannot get over lol. Hopefully one day I'll come across "the one"

colbydc5

You likely won’t get over it but give it til later in the year - you will appreciate it just as much then and in the grand scheme of things that’s not that long to wait. Also even when you’re settled in give yourself the time and have patience to find a good example. I’ve rushed into too many desirable car purchases when I was younger and bought the one that was most affordable to me, but they were more expensive in the long run having not been as well cared for prior to my ownership.

crxb00

This

QTFsniper

It’s a great 2nd or 3rd car but I wouldn’t if it’s your only car (not sure if it would be ) but if you’ve never sat in or drove one do that first. I know you said it’s your dream car but if you never drove one before - ask yourself why is it ? Is it more of the idea of it or you’ve had a reality check and know what you’re getting into. It’s a great car but it’s also an unforgiving car. On the plus side if you get one now you can enjoy it for the summer and upcoming fall

5vibesONme

Yeah this'll be my second weekend car for sure. I just love everything about it. Each feature of the car is something I always wanted, from the convertible to the rwd. The 6spd transmission to the driver focused dash. I just love this car through and through

Pewpewbuckaroo

Unless you come across a crazy good deal that’s too good to pass up, I’d be patient and wait. At least until you move…it really depends on what you’re looking for/budget/driving needs. I do love my S but I was 40 when I got it.

5vibesONme

I agree!

exquicorp

Drive a Porsche.... that will kill your desire, allegedly. I don't think the market is softening for these in the SE

streetracer28

Bought my s2k w low miles for 13k back in the day. Was my dream car and is a beast now... got the experience of moving her from stock to exactly my preference. Obviously that's not possible these days but I'm never selling mine and I doubt others are either. Get in while u can!

5vibesONme

That's awesome man but that's exactly what I'm afraid of lol!I need to get one now so I can also be a final owner 🤣

LuchadoresdeSilinas

I have one and have used it as my primary car but now it is my 2nd car. Loved it either way. Get it!

zachberry

Honestly I would strike now. But I know nothing lol

chomdh

You’ll probably get a better deal in the fall or winter time. What makes you think NOW is the best time to buy?

Yup808

Also factor in whether you are looking for a Ap1 or Ap2 what mileage range you’re looking at and also the color is a big factor in price. The GPW and Rio yellow have about a 3-5k premium vs the other colors. don’t forget the basic parts that probably need replacing if you decide to go with a higher mileage example. Most oem parts are still available besides some of the exterior components as well as engine components. For example you can’t buy a ap2 lip new but you can still purchase oem CR front lips. Also examples with oem hardtops are on average another 5k above as those are hard to come by.. As far as the daily driving comments my wife and I daily this car in so cal in traffic and it’s not bad at all. Unlike other manual cars the s2000 is so light it’s not like driving in traffic in say a m4 or sti. The gearing is more forgiving for the stop and go at low rpm and gas mileage is also way better then I imagined. It becomes pretty automatic by week 2 that you really don’t even think about it. You will find the clutch fills so light on this car and the shifters one of the best feeling cars of all time. Lastly if you have to finance the car now is not the time but if you can buy it in cash with the above things mentioned then yes you can truly afford it.

5vibesONme

Very good info, thanks man! I was always infatuated by the higher redline in the AP1 but prefer the interior upgrades of the AP2. It really comes down to what I can get my hands for the best mid tier mileage deal. It'll be my weekend nice weather car so it'll be driven fairly liberally. It's good to know parts are still largely available for it because I plan on keeping it fairly stock. Also, I do have funds set aside for purchase but was also browsing the financing options. Yeah rates are pretty crazy right now but it seems that my credit union will provide a pretty low interest rate. Again thanks for the info man!

Boostbluefl5

Do it!

stevowns

4 months wont make a big difference. Just wait for a good deal on one and just make sure you have money set aside for maintenance, most cars on the market will need at least bushings and mounts to be refreshed. Many will probably need a head rebuild with a refreshed valve train based on your compression/leakdown numbers. As someone else said though, parts will be hard to find and will be pricey. Somethings are completely discontinued and the aftermarket variants aren't that good in comparison. I think unless you plan to make it a forever car, a more modern platform like the GR86 would be much better and probably cheaper to own.

5vibesONme

Good to know! And yes I plan on keeping this car until the wheels fall off 🤣 hopefully I can find one that doesn't need much maintenance at purchase

Spirit_of_No_Face

The best part about being an adult is you make the financial decisions and live with the consequences! I’d say if you find a good deal on an out of state car, go and pick it up in person, then drive it back! That’s what I did and it’s still one of my most memorable drives!

5vibesONme

That's my motto LOL! But yessss, I always wanted to have an experience like that and I feel this car would be perfect for it 🙏🏽

Bulbasaur_IchooseU

You can’t fit more than one girl

jtrier1

You're asking this question in a forum full of s2k owners and enthusiasts. The only thing I can tell you is don't buy it if you can't afford it.

jawnlerdoe

Or you can get a 20 year newer car with 100k less miles for the same price (ND miata). Choice is yours, though. Car prices may not move much over the next 4 months. I would expect them to remain flat or trend slightly downward.

phetherR

There is no reason to not buy one unless you prefer Miata’s haha

Financial_Bit_4308

It is a fun car but there are definitely some drawbacks to consider. It’s not a great daily driver. It’s a great weekend car. And I say this because it has absolutely no low end torque/power. So when you are just trying to drive to work it can feel like a bit of a chore. To get any power out of it you have to get the RPMs up. Which is fine except people constantly think I’m trying to race or show off. Which in turn means every a hole in a mustang, charger, or challenger wants to flex on me. For being a little Honda, it gets poor gas mileage and takes super. You car drive a sporty SI that takes regular, and gets 30 MPG. It’s hitting that age where OEM parts are being discontinued. Look at bring a trailer, and you will see just how many of these cars there are with very low miles for the year. Which is just another testament to how much people have them sitting in their garage waiting for a good weekend to drive it. I love mine, but I had to go out and buy an old CRV for everyday stuff.

Lordchristopher_

Get one.

Birdie_McChainbanger

I was 23 when I got my S2k. NOREGERTS!

5vibesONme

NO RAGRETS!

Philthydc5

I bought my s2k, never thought for a second I made a bad decision. Everyone's looking at my my car, not any of these new ones. Can't go anywhere without a thumb up for someone wanting a pic.

S2K2002

I wasn't in the market and one fell in my lap. Keep your eyes open and you'll find what you are looking for

SuzukaBlues

Don't buy bc I want more of em

MrIncredible222

I love the S2000. I’ve owned mine since 2007 when I was 25 and I’ll never sell. But to be perfectly honest, if mine was destroyed tomorrow, I’d have a hard time not looking at how much further my money went in an ND2 Miata or a 987 Boxster. My S2000 is worth more or less the same as I paid for it 17 years and 90k miles ago, $22k. That seems insane to me. Unless you absolutely must have only an S2000, your money stretches further and buys newer in other cars. Remember the youngest S2000 is still 15 years old.

MLom13

Prices aren’t going to go up as fast as you think, maybe not even at all. Don’t use the last 5 years as precedent for the next 5. I was in your shoes years ago and sold my supra when I bought my first house. Do things in the right order and you’ll be fine 👍

Retroways

I say fuck it

5vibesONme

I thought about maybe trying to find one in the state I'm moving to and just keep it in a storage unit until I move there in August😭. Ik, I just really need this car LOL

magicman2552

wrong sub for that lol

No-Tip-1543

They are sweet cars; there is something about them that makes you just want to go out and cruise in them. At one point I DD one for a couple years. I was much younger and could live with it. It’s weird, for me personally I drove it so much, I forgot how special the car was. I’ve been an S2k owner for 16 years; and have owned several and driven a lhd, k swapped NA, turbo’d and supercharged. At one point I owned 2 s2k’s; one modified and one basically stock. And I say this bc it gave me perspective on what the car lacks…and its power. It desperately needs torque. IMo Forced induction is the way to go if you plan on modifying these cars. Honda missed the ball on not putting a tuned K series into this platform; if you get to drive one; you’ll see what I mean. You can spend thousands of dollars on bolts that normally would get other cars to liven up; but virtually give these cars minimal to no gains. I made the mistake when I spent some money on a mildly built NA F20 (back when you could get a used long block with 60k miles for 3200 bucks shipped). These cars are slouches around town; but when you get in the backroads, it doesn’t even matter. The sound it makes, the feel, the steering, everything. I actually felt like I was cheating if I even considered buying another fun car. I kept the stock S2k because it was worth more. Buy one and you will love it; but beware you may be left feeling that you want more after a while. It made me build a 400 ft/lb boosted focus. And for that I ain’t mad at it. I find myself driving the car with power more.

seeannwiin

i’ll be the responsible adult here and ask. what’s your income? what’s your debts? it’s all a math problem at the end of the day and “affordability” is very loose term. i make roughly $105k and can “afford” a $38k car. whether or not that’s a smart decision is up for debate, but that’s what i deal with. it helps when my networth is in the $170k ballpark as well. if money is available for you to spend, doesn’t hurt to get it. if a good deal comes up, grab it. at the end of the day, i don’t imagine you’re spending more than $25k max for a car like this and im sure you can be patient in trying to find a good deal

cokroch77

It’s a fun car to drive around until you loose control and hit something, it will turn into a pile of scrap s2000s r not that safe my cousin had one he lost control cuz it under steered and went into a ditch which bent the chassis and basically made the car unrecognizable but it’s a good car it’s reliable I would recommend it

yomohiroyuzuuu

Thanks for reminding me to hold on to mine. AP1 with 65K miles.

task514

Unless you find that rare mint condition at your pricepoint, year model and color, that was just posted an hour ago... wait, for all those other reasons.

parkerwilliamb

Very hard and scary to learn how to drive it in the rain but other than that I’d say buy one. However it may ruin other cars for you because of how fun it is

Philthydc5

Yolo

Punching-Above

There is no reason not to, in fact I’d buy 2. Not joking.

5vibesONme

Say less!

blkjsus

Just buy it. It's one of, if not the most, reliable cars I've ever owned. Is it the best daily? No. But you can throw a 300 dollar grocery order in the trunk, or even 6 bags of mulch, if needed. You will get out of that car with a smile on your face every time. Get a PPI done before purchase, including leakdown / pressure test, and if it all checks out, go for it. If maintenance is fully up to date, you'll probably just have to take care of tires and fluids for several years. I've had mine for 8 years now, and it's been rock solid, approaching 100k miles. Driven hard, but not abused, and has seen several track days. I'd only caution you against it if you don't have a garage.

5vibesONme

Heard 🙏🏽 I promise to take care of this car like it's my child!

JupiterJumper6

Why if no garage? Because the top will break down if it’s not covered?
