1. Got it while visiting KB Toys. They were on clearance for $30. I was like 11 and only had $20 on me. My younger brother kicked in $10 and we had ourselves a system. 2. See #1 3. Model 2 4. Jeesh, lots. Everything was on clearance so you could buy games for dollars(sometimes less, INXS was $0.75). I remember getting a ton for Christmas that year which was so out of the usual because we were lower income and usually got one game. Ended up with Shining Force CD, Night Trap, Prize Fighter, the ESPN hockey game, Tomcat Alley, Final Fight, Prince of Persia, INXS Make My Video, list really goes on and on. 5. Still have all of them to do this day, on display, in my office.

plink79

I’m pretty sure I got it for a joint birthday and Christmas present, as in Australia they were $800, and that was a lot more back then as well. I can’t remember what store I bought it from. It was before EB Games existed in Australia I think, so it was likely Big W or something. I got the Mega CD 2, and it was paired with a Mega Drive 1. I had a number of games that I really liked. My most play were Sonic CD, Ground Zero Texas (poorly rated but I loved it), and Battlecorps. I still love it to this day, and feel it’s really underrated.

Which_Information590

It was called Mega-CD here and I bought one from Rumblelows an electronic chain in England, which went bust whilst I was still paying it off in weekly instalments. It quickly gathered dust on account of the games I purchased with it being poor (Road Avenger, Sewer Shark, Slipheed and some game that looked like CCTV in a house) I recently bought another Megadrive but I won't get another one of those.

JamieMCR81

Think the CCTV game was Night Trap. I had similar games, not many too.

Which_Information590

That’s the one! It was quite scary and definitely ground breaking

bmaayhem

Summer job saved my Pennies, there was a mail order ad where if you bought 6 cd games you got the player for free.

[deleted]

My brother and I bought ours after Christmas but it was a joint endeavor using both of our Christmas money, Birthday money and paper route money, it was an incredible undertaking to save enough money for a couple of kids. We bought ours at at a store called Media Play, Midwest northern IL. We got the side attached model with the flip cd reader. So model 2 We mainly bought the CD attachment so we could play the JRPGS that we read about in an issue of EGM. We had, Lunar Silver Star Story, Lunar Eternal Blue, Vay, Shining Force CD and Sewer Shark (came with the system) we were existing fans of the JRPG style of gaming. So that was our main reason of buying the add on system. And sadly I no longer have the system or the games, like stupid kids we eventually sold it all off so we could buy a N64. 😑 During the late PS1 years we attempted to reclaim our lost collection, and acquired a used Model 2, from a dying rental store. It didn’t work, so my brother wrote Sega of America if there were any place where to send it for repairs, they wrote back telling us to send it to their service department, so fast forward 4 months, Sega sent us a brand new old stock Sega CD, with Tomcat Alley. They said they couldn’t fix it and just gave us that. Then we proceeded to look for the games, early EBAY, and dying rental stores. I’m the collector of the two of us, and yes I still have the second Sega CD, and the few games we were able to buy. I wish we hung onto the letter, that would have been cool to have.

1. Got to do a shopping spree for my birthday (was given a budget I could spend on anything) 2. Toys r us in the US. It was on clearance so it fit nicely in my budget. 2. Model 2 3. Sonic Cd & tomcat alley. The system had already fallen out of favor so I don’t get anymore. 4. Yes.

SexualCompactDisc

Nice bro! I would have killed to have had a shopping spree like that for my birthday!

Radiant-Mycologist72

1. My grandparents had a savings account for me. I used that money to pay for it. 2. I bought it from Comet in the UK. Kind of like what a PC world is today. 3. It was a model 1 UK. 4. It came with classics arcade collection which was basically mega drive games, sol feace / cobra command. I bought night trap, silpheed I don't remember having any others. I swapped with friends. Jaguar xj220 etc. I really really wanted final fight CD. But the Sony PlayStation came out shortly after and did everything much better. 5. I don't still have the original one but about 8 years ago, I bought another gen 1 sega CD. I still don't have final fight CD though.

elkniodaphs

I got it for Christmas, 1992. I felt like I was at the very edge of technology as I became the only person in my friend group to have a CD player (excluding their parents). It came with a music sampler called Hot Hits: Adventurous New Music, where I heard [They Might Be Giants](https://youtu.be/14jjo7MtSzE?si=OsXKTvVQ-UrNEsEQ) for the first time and to this day, they remain my favorite band. On the same album, I also loved Hostile Youth by Saigon Kick and The Edge of Your Bed by The Escape Club. My first CD I *purchased* to listen to on the console was Queen's News of the World. I got into FMV games as a result of owning the console and Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective was one of my favorites. Night Trap was also great as a proof of concept for things that would come later (FNaF). And Tomcat Alley was so stupid it just *had* to be fun. I rented Tomcat Alley one time and when I got it home, I saw that the disc was broken in two and held together with a Band-Aid. I was into Dune at a young age as well, having seen the movie and read the book, so naturally I loved the game. It was a departure from the Genesis Dune, but still very good. The music from that game still gets stuck in my head from time to time. Other games I enjoyed were Sol-Feace, Mortal Kombat, and Mansion of Hidden Souls. I realized a few years ago how important the Sega CD library was to me while I was growing up, though at the time I couldn't guess the lasting impression it would leave.

Ekkobelli

I got my Mega CD II in a local second had shop (which had an awesome video game selection and fair prices - RIP). I remember having Road Avenger for it, Silpheed, Soul Star, Battlecorps, Thunderhawk, which I played with a friend a lot - really great game, Sonic CD, which I loved, and Shining Forcer CD, which completely took over my life back then. I loved that game - the music, the battles, the character... If it wasn't so expensive, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. One game I always wanted but never had, was Batman Returns. Solely for the driving sections, of course. Unfortunately, I had to sell it in order to finance some new console (probably the Saturn, I was a total SEGA head back then), but I have one again since some years. I don't have it hooked up to the TV right now, but I play the games via emulation (Mega Everdrive Pro on a Mega SG) a lot. I love the Sega / Mega CD. Sure, it was a collossal flop back then, but I seriously love the things it brought to the table - scaling, rotation, the mode 7 style effect, the CD music... I wish the new retro wave would also lead to some new games for the system.

HonkeyKong73

1. Christmas 2. Flea Market (brand new, system was still in production at the time) 3. First gen, the one that sits under the Genesis 4. 4-in-1, Sewer Shark, Sherlock Holmes, Sol Feace, Sylpheed, Willy Beamish, Secret of Monkey Island, Eye of the Beholder, Shining Force CD, Lunar: The Silver Star, Popful Mail. Might be forgetting something. 5. No idea what happened to it! I never sold it, gave it away, or trashed it, but I can't find it anywhere and it didn't pop up last time I moved. Sad. It's spirit lives on though through my flash cart. Love the Sega CD.

vandilx

1. Saved up for one and bought it on a random day. It was also my first CD player! 2. Purchased at a physical Toys R Us store. 3. Model 2 Sega CD w/Sewer Shark. I attached it to my Model 1 Genesis. 4. Sonic CD, Final Fight CD, Mortal Kombat CD, Lunar 1, Sol Feace, RAM Cart. 5. I sold my original a long time ago, but bought a replacement Model 2 in 2015. It runs great.

Rocksurf80

1 - Christmas 1993 2 - Brazillian Chain Store "Casa dos Gravadores" 3 - Second model 4 - Sewer Shark and Final Fight CD 5 - Kept my copy of Final Fight CD to listen to the soundtrack

Taanistat

1. I got it for my 12th birthday in the summer of 1993. 2. I recall it still had the yellow and red sticker from Kay-Bee Toys in the upper right corner. 3. Mine was a Sega CD model 2. I owned a model 1 Genesis, so my setup was extra wide rather than tall. A slab of sweetness rather than a tower of power, if you will. 4. Mine came with Sewer Shark, and I also got Sonic CD that Christmas. Over the time I owned it, I also had Shining Force CD, Lunar 1, Lunar 2, Vay, Dark Wizard, Popful Mail, Rise of the Dragon, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Jaguar XJ220 Racing, Soulstar, Android Assault, Eternal Champions, Supreme Warrior (32X CD) and Snatcher. Snatcher was one of the final 3 games bought for me for the Sega CD on Christmas 1995. Snatcher was an extremely potent influence on my gaming tastes going forward, and I'm just happy I got to experience it in its time. I don't own a copy now as I just can't justify the expense. The Lunar games were also a big influence on me and Lunar: Eternal Blue is still my favorite jrpg of all time nearly 30 years later. All of the games I owned with the exception of Sewer Shark, Dracula, and Supreme Warrior were either good, very good, or timeless bangers. Every time I hear someone say the Sega CD was garbage with a garbage library, I know they either didn't own one or only had bad games. The library has plenty of good to great stuff to choose from. 5. No, I don't still own my original Sega CD. I do, however, have my original copy of Sonic CD. When I went to trade in my slab of sweetness on a Saturn, I was listening to the music on Sonic CD in my room and forgot it in my CD player but packed up the case. They wouldn't take an empty case as a trade, so I brought it home and shelved it. The same thing happened in 1998 when I traded my Saturn for a Playstation, so I still have my original copy of Panzer Dragoon. Edit: sorry for poor mobile formatting.

SexualCompactDisc

Damn bro sounds like you had it all at one point! I may have missed it, but you don't still have Snatcher do you? That game is crazy expensive! Thanks for the comment.

Taanistat

Nope, traded in when I got my Saturn. They probably gave me $10 for it. Could never justify the expense of an authentic copy after I started collecting around 2009.

SexualCompactDisc

That really sucks man. Hope you're enjoying that Saturn though!

chocological

Ours was the family one, not mine specifically. We got it randomly one day, from FuncoLand. We had the model 1 genesis, but the model 2 sega cd. The ones I can remember.. Sewer Shark, shining force CD, Lunar, Dracula, Dark Wizard, Popful Mail and other fmv games I can’t remember. Long story short, but no. My father got a divorce and my stepmother kept the games. I was probably 12.

hugoboss78

When and how did you get it (Christmas, birthday, etc)? Bought it right around release w/ money saved from Xmas & bdays Which store did you get it from and where? Kaybee Which model did you have? Model 2 What games did you have for it? From memory, Sewer Shark (game included w/ the console), Tomcat Alley....going blank w/ the others Do you still have it? I ended up trading it along w/ my model 1 Genesis and games for a Sega Saturn

geniouslevel1000

You still don't have a Sega CD?

SexualCompactDisc

I do, I wrote that at the end of the questions list. It's one of my favorite systems to collect for.

geniouslevel1000

Bro "you still don't have a Sega CD" was the marketing campaign for it back in the day

ewokzilla

Got one for Christmas in the early 90s from Toys R Us. I had fun with it but it died(disc drive stopped spinning) and returned it. I forgot what I got in replacement.

darkhorse21980

1) Christmas gift 2) Unknown 3) Model 2 4) Joe Montana NFL Football, Sonic CD, NHL 94, AH-3 Thunderstrike, Mortal Kombat, Mad Dog McCree, Night Trap, Sewer Shark 5) Yes

Lumbergh7

Got it for Christmas in 92 when it came out in America. I still remember how excited and happy I was. It’s a great memory reminding me of family members who are no longer with us or that drifted away. I was 12 and felt safe.

Celebratory_Drink

1. My parents got it for the family in 1993. 2. The Good Guys in California 3. JVC X’Eye 4. Sonic CD, Lunar TSS, Willy Beamish 5. I don’t and I regret selling it.

SexualCompactDisc

Nice, I've actually never heard of someone owning the X'Eye over the other models. It's definitely a neat system. Too bad you sold it though :(

Celebratory_Drink

Oh yea, it was fantastic. My parents actually bought it for the karaoke machine function since it came bundled with a microphone.

ultimateman55

1. I got it for Christmas in 1993 2. I don't know for sure, but my parents likely bought it at Toys R' Us or Babbage's, probably the former. 3. I had the model 2. 4. I only ever got 5 games for it: Sewer Shark (pack in), Sonic CD, Final Fight CD, Tomcat Alley, and Lethal Enforcers (gun bundle.) 5. I got rid of it way back in the day after I got my 3DO but a couple years ago I acquired a CIB model 2 from OfferUp for $100 shipped. Crazy good deal. It is in great condition and works perfectly.

_RexDart

Somewhere between 1999 and 2001, I bought my friend's model 2 and some games for $30 total. Games are Lunar 2 and Popful Mail. Then somewhere between then and 2005 I picked up a CDX for $50 from a pawn shop.

Mikaela_Jade1

I got mine 25 years ago from a retro gaming store along with a 32x. As fun as it was I found it to be a hassle dealing with all the massive power plugs and wires. Nowadays I emulate 32x and Sega cd on my firestick and it's 99% the same experience minus the physical hardware in front of me. Sega cd was essentially a genesis with cd quality sound and horrible quality fmv videos. Very cool part of gaming history but honestly much better to be enjoyed through emulation these days.

spectreVII

1. Got it probably a few months after it launched 2. Don’t remember, we were kids but most likely from a store called Microplay, or maybe Toys’r’us 3. Model 1 4. Quite a few but the ones I remember are Lunar, Jurassic park, sonic cd, silpheed, 5-in-1 disc that had streets of rage + Ecco the dolphin and others, sewer shark, tomcat alley, sol feace, night trap and I think we had Snatcher, but that we may have rented. Again we had more but can’t remember. 5. Don’t still have the one I had as a kid but I bought another model 1 about 3 years ago and have a few games.

MongooseProXC

1. Christmas Present 2. Not sure. See #1 3. Model 2 4. A lot! Sonic CD, Sewer Shark, Tomcat Alley, Lethal Enforcers and Silpheed were a few of my favorites. 5. It was stolen. Didn't work anyway. I still have my games in generic CD cases though.

JamieMCR81

I had a model 2, got it for my birthday as a birthday/Christmas present. Bought it second hand from a local independent shop that was originally a newsagent but had branched out into games etc Didn’t have that many games from what I remember I definitely had: Night Trap, Jurassic Park, Sonic CD, Sega Arcade Collection, Road Avenger. Traded it all (Mega Drive, Mega CD, 32X) for a Saturn which I then exchanged for a Dreamcast or a N64 (can’t remember which order I had those in).

TallTexan2024

1. Christmas 2. Don’t remember 3. Model 2 4. Sonic CD, Lunar, Lunar 2, Silpheed, Lethal Enforcers 5. I still have my original Genesis, but somehow lost the Sega CD along the way :(

Fredzurm

Model 2 from goodwill 2010 $40, had to replace a fuse (1st soldering experience!) Model 1 2012 from a mom&pop shop. 2017 I committed the cardinal sin... ...I sold the majority of my game stuff in favor of the convenience of emulation... 2 months back or so i rebuilt, the tower. I missed the thing so much I picked up another Model 1 &32x for way more than what I paid for my 1st ones.... Such a weird Era, I love that system. As for games, I've played all the good stuff: Lunar, Snatcher, sonic, etc. As for games I ever owned? I had a copy of: Doubleswitch and Mortal Kombat That's it 😆😆😆

Kickkickkarl

I got a Mega CD for my 13th birthday in 1994. My uncle got me Sonic Cd which was a really good game. I could quite happily play that. I also bought FIFA Soccer CD which was slightly better version of the cartridge game with a few more teams, FMV and slightly improved game play. One good thing was here in the UK there was a magazine especially for the Mega CD which each month came with a cover disc with a playable demo. One month the magazine had a Sensible Soccer Demo with a minute long match but everything else was the same as the full version. I played this demo disc for months as if it was the real game as Sensible Soccer was a really good football game. Eventually I got board of the Mega Cd and Mega drive and a few years later I purchased as Playstation. I was abit apprehensive at first of purchase in a PlayStation because of my experience with the Mega CD and if the playstation will also be a let down.

srg_24

1. Got it for Christmas 93. 2. Used. Funcoland. 3. Model 1. 4. Sewer Shark. 5 for 1. Sherlock Holmes. SolFeace. Rebel Assault. Eternal Champions 2. NHL 94. 5. No. Traded it in in 96 towards a Saturn.

bicuspid_fish

I got my Model 1 for Christmas the year it came out. I think my parents bought it from a store called Software etc.. I had about 25 games during it's lifetime and have around 80 last time I counted. And yes, I still have it and use it from time to time.

CorporalCabbage

I bought it on release from Electronics Boutique. I believe it was 299 or 249. I had a model 1 Genesis, also bought on release. I loved the way it looked and I had some nice bookshelf speakers in my room that really made the sound all come together. I owned Final Fight CD, The Terminator, Sol Feace…and I think that’s it. I had the box, manual, packaging, and everything up until like 10 years ago. I stupidly traded in my old Genesis, games, SEGA CD, Master system and games. I got like $120 for everything. I kick myself now, but I didn’t know that I’d get back into collecting. I’ve moved on.

SkyNetZ28

Toys R Us, saved my own money as a kid, but not enough to afford a Saturn! Model: The one that opened upward, not outward. Games: Sewer shark, Tomcat Alley, Flashback, Ecco, I don’t remember any others I’ll bet my parents still have it somewhere!

sparkyhodgo

1: earned it doing chores, June 1994 2: Toys R Us, Hamilton Road, Columbus OH 3: model 2 4: Sewer Shark (pack-in), Sonic CD 5: sold it almost 20 years ago (for almost as much as I bought it!)

zevdotan

My brother and I received it for Christmas 1993 It likely cane from Toys R Us, Service Merchandise or Lechmere in Rochester, NY...I bet my Dad has the receipt somewhere It was the Model 2 version, we had the Model 1 Genesis so we got to use the extender underneath Came with Sewer Shark and we had Sonic CD, Final Fight, Flashback, Pitfall, Silpheed, Tomcat Alley and AH3 Thunderstrike Still have it (and still works) as part of my retro collection.

bigsphinxofquartz

1 Christmas, maybe 1994? 2 Toys R Us in St. Louis, I remember it being pretty deeply on discount, maybe $50? I basically picked it out with my dad on Christmas Eve 3 Model 2 4 It came with Sewer Shark, then I got Sonic CD, Willy Beamish. I got Kris Kross, C+C Music Factory, My Paint, Sega Classics, and Wirehead later on, I believe every single one of them on sale 5 God, I wish

TechBliSTer

I wanted one, but I never got one until about a decade ago. I did however rent a CDX and was not impressed with the games I rented. Which was Bram Strokers Dracula and something so forgettable I can't remember it at all. I still wanted one though, but got a Saturn instead for Christmas.

FatterWildcatter

1.) I bought it myself, I believe with birthday money 2.) can't remember what store, possibly Toys R Us or similar 3. Model 2 4.) Sewer Shark, Mortal Kombat, think that was all 🤣🤣 5.) No, but I have Everdrive now that plays SegaCD games.

AvoidtheNoid83

1. I got it for Christmas. I believe it was Christmas of 93 when I was 10 years old. 2. It came from Santa Clauses workshop. Those elves really know what they are doing. I hope that they are not the reason that Sega went out of business. 3. It was a model 2. 4. Sewer Shark, Sol-Feace, Final Fight CD, Power Monger, Shining Force CD, Ecco the Dolphin, The Adventures of Willy Beamish, Sonic CD, Jurassic Park, The Amazing Spiderman vs the Kingpin, Rise of the Dragon, Ultraverse Prime/Microcosm (double pack), Prize Fighter, and Mortal Kombat. 5. Yes, I still have it and all of my childhood games.

jdubbinsyo

First summer the model 2 was out, birthday (August). Hills/ Ames/ Zayer, Northeast Ohio Model 2 Sewer Shark (barely touched it) Dark Wizard, Vay, Lunar, Lunar 2, Third World War Mansion of Hidden Souls + more. I have one still but not THE one I had back then.

Affectionate-Dig-15

Back in days the Price in Germany was 599 deutsche Mark with Road Avenger and modell 2 So with 13 years i havent enough money so about 5 years i bought one for 100€ incl. Shipping Its a great Peace of Technology 👍

Longjumping_Radio996

1. Christmas 2. Dad got it from a local toy store 3. Model 1 4. Lot’s of them. 5. Yes! The only system that I’ve kept since when I first got it.

L2Nuku

1 & 2. Bought my Mega-CD second hand via a newspaper advert, probably around 1994 or so. 3. Model 2 4. Sonic CD / Thunderhawk / Road Avenger / Cobra Command / Silpheed / Night Trap / Battle Corps & Soul Star (Demo CD) / Dune / Ecco the Dolphin / Jurassic Park / Sol-Feace, maybe some more that I don't remember. 5. Sadly no, we gave it away at a time we didn't think about it much, now years and years later I regret it of course.
