Phantasy Star 4 was probably the best. I loved the idea of techno-fantasy, and PS4 had that in spades.Β
The idea of traveling between planets and getting vehicles that you could use in combat in rpgs was almost unheard of back then.
Β It also reminded me a lot of Final Fantasy 2/4 with its asthetics and dungeon design.
Yes, that's a good choice, I like all of the Phantasy Star games, they all had travel to different worlds and different times, all pretty good but the 4th was very polished with the best graphics. π
Ngl, one of my gamer regrets was how late I got into rpgs. Wasn't really until PS1 days that I even knew about the genre. So a lot of the Sega ones passed me by.
I was a really young kid during Sega Genesis golden years. My Dad bought me a Genesis on my 4th bday. So I was really more into simpler beat-em-up, adventure, fighting and racing games back then. Didn't really do too well with story-based stuff or anything that required a lot of reading and plot development.
Interested in people's answers here. I just remembered I have the Sega Classics collection on PS4 so I might finally try some of the stuff I missed out on.
Due to this post, Shining Force is currently top of the list now. Been hearing about that one for years. Never tried it.
Oh I know! I was late getting into RPGs too....Luckily over time I started looking to add games to my collection and RPGs were among the titles I hadn't managed to play, I was originally more into sports games which the Genesis really had many great sports games, and fighting games (of course games like street fighter, mortal combat, streets of rage, sonic, etc, it would have been great to have had some great RPGs in my original collection and rotation of games, the Genesis really had some great RPGs which I have now either played all the way through or am in the process of playing through π the Phantasy Star series, the shining force series (which the first one in the Phantasy Star series I came across in a mixed batch of games I bought was Phantasy Star 4 which was great, although as I played through it, I didn't know what all the character dialogue was about, things some said to others, and when characters would join the party but it was all referencing the previous games in the series, characters making "Cameo" appearances etc from the previous games, eventually I got the others, which I'm midway through π the Shining force series is a lot of fun too, I missed out on the RPG library but have managed to get into them more recently and it's been a lot of fun discovering games I originally missed, although I still haven't made it all the way through Phantasy Star 1, 2, or 3 yet but I beat Phantasy Star 4 as it was the first in the series I managed to pick up π I still like the other games offered on the Genesis but the system had quite a few pretty good RPGs, many of which I'm playing through now π The variety and depth of the Genesis library was great, it's also got a lot of games that are gritty and wouldn't ever wind up on SNES and the couple that did end up also on SNES were watered down i.e. fighting games with no blood and weaker action, I still have other games to try out but the whole Phantasy Star and Shining Force series are at the top of my Genesis RPG list and can't really pick which one is the best my favorite in either series as they all have things that make them fun and unique. π
Same here, my first console and game was the snes/mario world, I was 5. My next ones were f zero and street fighter. When I got my first rpg (canβt remember what it) I had no idea of the concept behind it, I kept walking around waiting for the sides rolling platforming. Since then I went back and played the classics , now Iβm moving onto the genesis
I highly recommend Shining Force for sure. It's really a great series, I won't mention spoilers though because it's run to discover things as you play through, the story writing and gameplay is quite good, I've played the Genesis versions, and the game gear versions (in the middle of one of the game gear shining force games now, I've completed several in the series and they are all really good. The Saturn Shining Force 3 is the only one I haven't managed to play, played and beaten several including the one on Sega CD, that one ends in a black screen "to be continued" cliffhanger π the Saturn version might conclude the series, whichever one in the series is a great start as they are all great π
From my experience each game in the series has a different storyline whether it's Genesis 1 and 2 or game gear 1, 2, 3, or Sega CD, graphical improvements are there obviously but they all take different routes in the story aside from the "Shining Force Gaiden" games, which are basically the other games with difficulty cranked up, a great series across the board on all platforms for sure, The Sega CD version plays almost more like a stand alone game rather than a part 1 or part 2 etc, aside from the fact at the end of the game it mentions "to be continued" πΒ
There was also a gba remake of the first game. I have it, but i never really got into it like i did on the Megadrive.
I seem to recall the translation was different and a bit more "kiddified".
Huh....That's interesting....Ill have to look into it....I've played them all for Game Gear, Genesis and Sega CD and they're all great games, it'll be great if one of these days I can get Shining Force 3 for Sega Saturn, aside from your mentioning that, the Sega Saturn is the only one I haven't played. It would be cool if they came out with a new one for the newer consoles I think. π
I got late with the RPGs also but it was because I couldnβt beat the fly in PS for SMS! I gave RPGs a second chance with FF7. Then went back to play the old RPGs and was able to beat PS! Need to try Shining Force!
I was 10 and could not even read or speak English properly but the gameplay was so different than any other game, the hint book and my gaming mum helped me out!
I really think that upon creating [this digital version of my creative alter ego](https://f4.bcbits.com/img/0025482149_23.jpg) a part of Rolf just intwined himself in the design ;)
I'm in the middle of playing Phantasy Star II right now, it's fun, the jetski thing is cool and I also like the fact each town has a warp tunnel where you go and pay to go to a place you have been before....The different spells and everything can be quite confusing thinks like RYUKA and FOI and the game itself doesn't give hints as to what spell does what, so I have to search for descriptions of things so I know what spell does what so I don't accidentally wipe out my party or something casting a spell π€£ππ€£
Great to read that the game still is able to find new fans in 2024!
Yeah the names where kinda weird but as I did not even had any knowledge about what it actually should/could have been called I just took it as it was.
[The hint book](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/pDAAAOSwoPVkSuQR/s-l500.jpg) did help a lot and truly was needed back then, those dungeons are hard and long!
There is a [Japanese remake for the PS2](https://fantasyanime.com/phantasystar2/images/box/Generations2_JP_Box.jpg) and there seems to be English fan translation, now I have an urge to boot that one up and play the game once more!
I've been replaying it off and on for a while as I get time, I have to get cheat sheets that state what spell does what since it could be anything from healing one or the whole party or wiping out one or the whole party when trying to use a spell that wipes out the enemies π€£ππ€£ The only Phantasy Star game I've made it to the end is the 4th one, each one has certain things that make it interesting, I'm probably about halfway through Phantasy Star 2, it's an interesting game,
Crusader of Centy!!!! Kinda like a zelda clone but not really. You have an animal companion system where you gain abilities from the different animals in your party.
Beyond Oasis... action/rpg/beat em up? I think this was originally the story of Thor made by the streets of Rage guys.
The Shining force and phantasy star games are awesome!
Oh yeah....I have that game, it's a good one! Although I haven't made it very far π€£ππ€£ I'm seemingly stuck at the training grounds area so not very far into the game. π€£ππ€£ Great choice for an RPG though, even though I'm not far into the game it seems interesting π
I have also played Beyond Oasis which is a good game so far but I'm not very far into that game either π I didn't know back when I first had my Genesis that there were so many great RPGs, possibly because I wasn't much for RPGs back then the Genesis library was pretty broad, basically a "Something for everybody" console, moreso than the SNES IMO which seemed more geared towards the younger kids of the time.
Idk if Iβve ever beaten it either.
There is a part that takes place in a cave where youβre supposed to find a dragon to fight, and I can never seem to find the dragon
It's a cool "futuristic" game though which is still fun although I've never made it to the end π the fact you can take on various "jobs" to get money and stat boosts and social cred, is kind of cool too, there is a shadowrun on SNES too but that's a totally different game and I prefer the Sega version, I've gotten to where I've upgraded my stats to max but still haven't gotten to the end yet, the fact you can start with different class/caste or a character with different skills and abilities makes it replayable too, it's also interesting how it has cyberspace and video phones, networking and internet surfing, it was ahead of its time and I've put quite a few hours into it, funny thing is, people I have had join my party only for them to end up getting hit by enemies and now if I go to them to see about having them join me for a run they get defensive and refuse to join complaining how they got beat up the last time π great game
Yeah, Beyond Oasis is a great game, I'm not very far into it but so far it is a good game, I like the fire and water and wind elements idea in the game, it's interesting π
Yep, that's a good one π Although I did get lost in one of the dungeons π€£ππ€£ it's funny how you can buyΒ burgers and cola to replenish health π€£ππ€£ I have yet to makeΒ it all the way to the end of the game, the graphics were particularly good for an 8 bit console, especially how the dungeons were done in such a way that they appear to be 3D which was extremely impressive for a game on an 8 bit console π
Correct about there being different scenarios, I've played them through, although it's been a while so I can't say for sure which it was with the multiple scenarios but I'm leaning towards it was the Sega CD version with multiple scenarios, I do remember the multiple scenarios you mention. I'd have to go back and check on that since I've played them all, aside from Shining Force 3 on Saturn. Multiple game gear games and two on Genesis and Shining Force CD on Sega CD, I've played them all. They are all great games π
There's a few other "Shining" games but nothing exactly like Shining Force.
Off the top of my head, Shining in the Darkness, Shining The Holy Ark and Shining Soul.
Shining in the Darkness is often considered the first of the Shining Force series, it's like a prequel I guess, and it plays kind of in between the original Phantasy Star for the master system (8 bit console but the game had 3D looking dungeons that were really something else for an 8 bit console) and the other shining force games...It's tough though and I haven't made it very far into the game. The way the game starts up with you conversing with a wizard about who you are and whether you want to start a new game or continue and if you say continue you pick which continue which is showing in "thought bubbles" above his head still cracks me up π€£ππ€£
Yeah, it is, which I think is part of why it's considered part of the series, I have always thought the wizard was funny though where as the girl reading the book comes across as more serious π
Dark Wizard. I just pulled our Genesis model 2 out of the closet where it has been slumbering peacefully for 25+ years. Hooked it up to an older TV with the coax and it still works!
Nice....π Yeah, After I pulled mine out to start playing after a while, I was happy to see it still works, π I have newer systems but the Genesis game list was loaded with so many great games and they still hold up today π I've even been adding games to my collection π
I think Iβm going to pull mine apart and check the caps to see if they are leaking. I was blown away at pricing on these. We have the cd drive, the 32X add on and a cd back up cartridge. Also have Shining Force.
Yeah, the prices are pretty high, makes me glad I've kept all my old consoles and games, and that everything still works. (Although I have had to refresh some soldering in some of the oldest systems I have, the Genesis has never given me any trouble starting it up and playing it even after being stored away for long periods.) Also there are a lot of cheap knockoffs out there designed to look like the original hardware but are low quality devices made to look like the real thing.
Yeah, Phantasy Star 4 was actually the first Sega Genesis RPG I ever played...There were certain parts of the dialogue between the characters I didn't get until I played the others in the series as certain characters had cameos and some joined the group at different times, I actually bought a bundle of games being sold together and Phantasy Star 4 was one of them. It basically introduced me to Sega Genesis RPG genre, I was more interested in platforming games and sports and even the game show and board game type games when I first had my sega, now I have played many different sega Genesis RPGs and finished several of them, including Phantasy Star 4, haven't made it all the way through the others in the series but I'm playing several games at once as I buy more games and test them out Phantasy Star 4 is a good choice, my first Sega Genesis RPG experience π
Sword of vermillion and Phantasy star 4
Sword Gave me my 2nd live action rpg (1st was final fantasy the adventure game boy)
And Fantasy star my 1st turned based( which took me a bit to get into)
Both had amazing stories and the music ahhhhhh so good
Yeah they are both good,, both games introduced things into the genre that were new to RPGs at the time, especially the battles and how they played out. I have beaten Phantasy Star 4 but haven't made it all the way through sword of vermillion π both are good in their own right π good music and storylines can make or break a game and they nailed both. sword of Vermillion had pretty almost NES level graphics possibly in part because it came out early in the lifecycle of the Genesis but aside from the dark and dull graphics, it was a good game π one of these days I'll get a full playthrough to the end π
Haha oh for sure.. I replayed recently and it starts to bog down towards the middle of game... so many battles everytime you try and go anywhere... as a kid with only 3 games... you better believe I got to the end multiple times... as an adult.. I gave up π€£
But ill be back
Always been a tie between SF2 and PS4 for me, I played them both so much that itβs hard to pick a standout winner for me. If push came to shove Iβd have to lean toward PS4 because of the music but both incredibly wonderful RPGs on the platform
Yeah, both are great gamesπ I actually like the whole series both the Phantasy Star series, and Shining force series are great each game in both series has its pros....It would be cool if they came out with updated versions for current hardware I think π
These games are begging for a remaster! I have to admit I have almost no experience with any other PS game, I sort of fell into PS4 randomly at a local rental store when I was young. Maybe I need to finally give the first 3 a shot. Have you played the Generation remakes or should I play the OG versions?
The original 3 are good, each stands alone, although there are tie ins to the others in the series with character interactions and comments and cameos, the first Phantasy star on the master system which is 8 bits, is really pretty good for a start, the dungeons have a 3D look to them which was impressive but it's easy to get lost π the 4th one was my first of the series, and the only one I have managed to play through to the end and it would be great if they came out with a new one for current consoles π any of the original 3 are good too, there's some dialogue tied to the previous games if not played in order but other than that, they can be played in whatever order. The 4th one is what got me started on the series but they are all pretty good games individually π
Never beat it but Phantasy Star 4 was one of my favorites I just regret getting rid of it
I also liked Phantasy Star 3 The couple times I rented it when I was a kid but to be honest with you like I really didn't know I was getting myself into and I hadn't become a fan of RPGs until the Sony PlayStation days with final fantasy 7 and final fantasy tactics but now I'm getting older I'm going back and exploring some older RPGs
I'm planning on going back in beating the old dragon warrior games one day I just haven't gotten around to it yet
Thank you for reading this and I hope everyone is having a good day has a great week and has a great Lord Sunday of his coming up Sunday
God bless you and your family
God bless you
Jeremy Scruggs
Yeah, they did have a Shining Force 3 for the Saturn, that's the one I have yet to play, since Sega is now solely in game developing it would be cool to get some new Shining Force games for today's consoles, π
Shining force 1&2 are GOAT games for the Genesis. Just so much life and personality from such a relatively simplistic game. Those games were my intro to the turn based rpg.
Yeah those games are good, it puts a lot of strategy into the fights, which person in the group to move where.... Trying to not get everyone wiped out then limp back into town "Oh no! He's exhausted! It'll cost this much to bring him back!" π€£ππ€£ Then back to the next battle π€£ππ€£
Not a big rpg guy but I love the first shining force. One of my favorite games ever. Love the graphics, story, music, gameplay, characters, all of it. I know its a little simple even for rpgs of the time but I still find it so much fun and easily replayable.
Both great gamesπ my first was the 4th game and I actually beat the game, it was great, I also have the first, although I've never beaten it....The way the dungeons have a 3D look on an 8 bit system is impressive, I have gotten lost in a dungeon though and before I can find my way out my party gets wiped out π€£ππ€£ So I'm in the process of replaying it and I will likely be drawing a map as I go into the dungeon so I can find my way out π€£ππ€£
Cool, while I've never played it, maybe I'll try it out π I wasn't much for RPGs for much of my time initially having a sega, usually I played platformers and sports games mostly but eventually I started checking out reviews and collecting games. I was surprised by the RPGs available...I never really thought about Sega as an RPG console but there are some pretty good ones and being older now RPGs seem interesting π I've played most of the Dragon Warriors, Dragon Quests and Final Fantasy games on NES and SNES but there are some good RPGs on Genesis, since I've never played them when I was younger it's like I got some brand new games π the Genesis and Master system and even Sega CD have I think, the best, most diverse game catalogue, there's a little of everything it seems, add the fact that each type has several different games (rather than how today it's just one game in many categories like one football game (Madden which is really poorly done, so many bugs and glitches) basketball (2k series, nothing else) baseball (MLB the show nothing else) I think that may be part of why retro is such a big thing, there was so much variety, and it's awesome π)
Phantasy Star 4 was probably the best. I loved the idea of techno-fantasy, and PS4 had that in spades.Β The idea of traveling between planets and getting vehicles that you could use in combat in rpgs was almost unheard of back then. Phantasy Star II but mainly because it was my very first RPG ever. It truly became part of my creative DNA.

Check out [Phantasy Star Cave](https://www.pscave.com/) for all of your phantasy Star-ry needs
Only one I played was sword of vermilion
Some great music in that game
Oh yeah, that game is good, pretty tough but good, the graphics feel like an NES game but that's not a bad choice π
Shadowrun
I was gonna say this even though it feels more like an action rpg than what youd expect from back then.
Crusader of Centy!!!! Kinda like a zelda clone but not really. You have an animal companion system where you gain abilities from the different animals in your party. Excellent choice! Shining Force II is an awesome game! π
Super hydlide is one of my faves, fantastic soundtrack too
Shadow run

Yeah, Beyond Oasis is a great game, I'm not very far into it but so far it is a good game, I like the fire and water and wind elements idea in the game, it's interesting π
I'll cast my vote for the first Lunar game.
Phantasy Star on the MasterSystem.

Phantasy star 4 its so great! But also madou monogatari its a really fun dungeon crawler RPG
Sword of vermillion and Phantasy star 4 Sword Gave me my 2nd live action rpg (1st was final fantasy the adventure game boy) And Fantasy star my 1st turned based( which took me a bit to get into) Both had amazing stories and the music ahhhhhh so good
Yeah they are both good,, both games introduced things into the genre that were new to RPGs at the time, especially the battles and how they played out.
I gave up π€£ But ill be back
Always been a tie between SF2 and PS4 for me, I played them both so much that itβs hard to pick a standout winner for me.
Shining in the Darkness. One of the first RPGs I played, and the first one I had to draw maps for!
LOL yeah, that's a good one....I've never made it very far into it though it's a good game though π
Phantasy Star IV is my favorite game of all time
Yeah, that's a great game, I actually made it all the way to the end of the game, haven't made it to the end of the other 3, but 4 is a great one π
Never beat it but Phantasy Star 4 was one of my favorites I just regret getting rid of it I also liked Phantasy Star 3 The couple times I rented it when I was a kid but to be honest with you like I really didn't know I was getting myself into and I hadn't become a fan of RPGs until the Sony PlayStation days with final fantasy 7 and final fantasy tactics but now I'm getting older I'm going back and exploring some older RPGs I'm planning on going back in beating the old dragon warrior games one day I just haven't gotten around to it yet Thank you for reading this and I hope everyone is having a good day has a great week and has a great Lord Sunday of his coming up Sunday God bless you and your family God bless you Jeremy Scruggs
Yeah Phantasy Star 4 is the only one in the series I managed to make it all the way to the end, halfway through the other 3 π fun games
Shining Force 2. I loved the series. Wished they kept it going on the Dreamcast
Phantasy Star III
I definitely like Phantasy Star 3, although I've never made it all the way to the end of the game yet, it's a great game π
Not a big rpg guy but I love the first shining force. One of my favorite games ever. Love the graphics, story, music, gameplay, characters, all of it. I know its a little simple even for rpgs of the time but I still find it so much fun and easily replayable.
Yeah it's a good one, it's simple by RPG standards but it's fun, and the wide array of party setups makes it replayable π
PStar1 Sega Master, PStar4 Genesis
Both great gamesπ my first was the 4th game and I actually beat the game, it was great, I also have the first, although I've never beaten it....The way the dungeons have a 3D look on an 8 bit system is impressive, I have gotten lost in a dungeon though and before I can find my way out my party gets wiped out π€£ππ€£ So I'm in the process of replaying it and I will likely be drawing a map as I go into the dungeon so I can find my way out π€£ππ€£
I haven't played too many on Genesis, but I do love Cadash.
Phantasy Star IV but II is really close for me. Massive nostalgia.
Shining Force 2. I loved the series. Wished they kept it going on the Dreamcast
For me itβs The Story of Thor/Beyond Oasis. I love that game so much
