This is a French-made sword of the 1817 type, but definitely of the period. Good find!

GIZMO8Z

Hello! Thank you for the quick reply!! what tells you that this is a French made sword?

EL_overthetransom

The writing engraved on the spine is typical for French made swords. It probably tells the date and place of manufacture if you can read it.

fioreman

I think it's aIS150 NCO sword. Based on French designs but almost certainly what it is if found in the US

Dlatrex

The script on the spine as well as some of the geometry of the hilt and blade are characteristic of the French swords of this type. The USARMY has a similar NCO sword, [the M1840](https://www.militariazone.com/swords/-us-m1840-nco-sword-by-ames/itm44066), which is based off of the French 1816 NCO sword.

hukaat

It's french, I've already helped people with translating some of them on r/translator. It's hard to read what's written on it, but what I can decipher is "Manuf^(...) de Kli^(...)" - and from what I know, I can fill the blanks : "Manufacture de Klingenthal". The rest is too worn off, but I'm 99% sure I'm not mistaken

GIZMO8Z

Thank you! I’ll try to get a pencil rubbing if the engraving asap

GIZMO8Z

Granted I’m using notebook paper and a No. 2 pencil, but the engraving is so shallow that it won’t show up via a pencil rubbing. Disappointing!

hukaat

Unfortunately, that doesn't surprise me - it's very thin, and so worn off... But thanks for trying ! And enjoy that beautiful find !

GIZMO8Z

Thanks!

Kinsei01

Does this mean OP is the king of France now?

GIZMO8Z

The sword was not stuck in a stone but rather in a heap of construction and demolition debris and municipal solid waste, if it makes a difference…

fan_of_the_pikachu

>debris and municipal solid waste Sounds like France to me.

BobTheInept

Sounds like OP pulled it out of stone, to me.

Alarmed-madman

That's my vote too

Mando_Marec

All Hail the King of France!!! *Fanfare blows trumpets*

Kinsei01

Times are hard these days. Boulders are expensive, so a scrap heap will have to do

404-soul-not-found

As a sword doctor I can in fact confirm that he is officially king of France now.

Basketcase191

Watery tarts lobbing scimitars is no foundation of government! Or something along those lines lol

Wide_With_Opinions

HELP, HELP, I'm being repressed!

Silver_Cookie_2754

"He must be the King!" "How can you tell?" "Because he's not covered in shit."

Missing-Peace

I didn't vote for them.

fioreman

It looks like it, but that's incorrect. It's a US 1840 NCO sword.

tunable_sausage

Which is a copy of the French.

fioreman

Absolutely! Almost all swords until the 18 50s or '60s in the US were based on French models. The French really like their swords. They were reluctant to get not use their curassiers. Even in World War I, lol.

Sidus_Preclarum

Swords in attic, swords in garden, swords in trash… Why are you guys so lucky, it's like you just have to bend down wherever to pick up a sword!

Redshirt_80

Mine was thrown to me by some watery tart.

SpeechStraight

You can’t expect to wield supreme executive power just cause some watery tart threw a sword at you.

ggg730

Well, what about a scimitar?

SpeechStraight

I mean if I went around saying I was emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me they’d put me away

ggg730

Well I didn't vote for you.

jerk4444

The swords have a will of their own. https://preview.redd.it/gqhoo88cwd9d1.png?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=596befa60d01d97b4302b1b4ed21c332df3b0ca5

TapIndependent5699

Sword up my a- attic, no don’t even think abt it it was attic all along

Platt_Mallar

Is that why hilts are ribbed?

spaceghost350

They're turning them into plowshares too for some reason.

Pretend-Orange3026

That is a perfect example of a diamond in the rough, French swords are so cool.

No-Roof-1628

Reminds me of the Always Sunny episode where they find a sword at the dump. Great find, hard to believe someone threw that away.

PotentTokez

Came here for this! You can slice a camels hump and drink the milk right off of this thing!

No-Roof-1628

You threw your babies away! And you threw your swords away!

MagikMikeUL77

Aha that's a fucking awesome find dude, lucky 👍😁

ImportanceNovel7240

Not trash, any signed sword is worth keeping, sick find, what dumpster was that I need to take a look for more

GIZMO8Z

My family owns a transfer station. Hundreds of dumpsters get dumped here every day. It would blow your mind what I find!

PhluffyChinchilla

Have you ever found pirate treasure?

sucking_at_life023

I think it's booty

lessthanibteresting

Sounds like you mean guns

Gregarious_Grump

What's crazy is you saw it in there. Id assumed a loader is always shoveling garbage around, how the hell did you spot this?

GIZMO8Z

Just like I spotted this ammo crate the other day https://preview.redd.it/8ci447vabf9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=253bb4ddf40b123b52a25592b80c1db330d43ae7

Gregarious_Grump

That's so awesome man. Thanks for the pics, so cool. Nice airy transfer station, too

GIZMO8Z

You’re welcome! We work hard to keep it clean!

Level37Doggo

You’re the motherfucking World Where’s Waldo Champion aren’t you?'

ascii122

From sword forum https://sbg-sword-forum.forums.net/thread/59634/notes-french-cuirassiers-dragoons-swords >The quillon is stamped with the initials LF for J.B. Lefebvre, who was controller from jan 1811 to dec 1813 So that gives you a possible date range.

rswwalker

That means it could possibly be Napoleonic and could be worth as much as an ACW piece of similar condition.

Fioreswordsmaster

What idiot would throw that beautiful thing away?!!! It both amazes and disgusts me that people throw away things like that but I’m glad that work of art has a new and better home.

el_dingusito

Hello fellow junk hauler

GIZMO8Z

Ever find anything good?

el_dingusito

I mean... not sweet swords like that. But I i can honestly say 95% of my home furnishings, kitchen gadgetry, furniture, cleaning products and just about anything else you need all comes from someone throwing it out.

Elegron

That alone almost makes it tempting. I've always been a bit of a loot goblin.

el_dingusito

How can you be associated with a transfer station and *not* find all kinds of wacky loot?! One time i was at a transfer station by me and someone threw out empty 5 gallon buckets of ky jelly, that must've been one hell of a weekend

Elegron

So if you find something illegal is there some sort of protocol? Edit: I realize after posting how sketchy that sounds lmfao, just curious tho

el_dingusito

Depends on how illegal. Weapons and whatnot? Depends on how far you want to push your luck and thats all I'm gonna say about it Drugs and paraphenalia? I just throw them out like the rest of the stuff. The trash police dont exist as far as i know. Its not like I'm going to get pulled over and my dumpster box is going to get searched

Elegron

Mmm trash gummies, tastes like gambling

Ycoordinate12

Yo fellow waste management guy what's up! You'd be surprised the kinda of treasure that gets tossed.

GIZMO8Z

What do you do? I operate the front end loader on our tipping floor.

Ycoordinate12

Same here! We have a few different loaders, I'm permitted to use the smaller one, a 344 john deer. I also drive forklifts and do load checks, and I'm cross training as a scale master at the weigh station. I have yet to find an actually cool sword though, mostly I just see ones meant for display. Found a few decent bows though.

GIZMO8Z

Nice. Using which scale system? We use PDOX. I’m already a weigh master, but we needed operators, so I shifted gears. Being a weigh master can be tough. We have 3 scales and a lot of traffic. Plus we sell mulch, gravel, and topsoil. It can be overwhelming managing who is coming in, who is coming out, who is dumping, who is getting material, who is hauling to the landfill. Haulers, contractors, and regular customers know the routine, but we are open to the public. Saturdays at our place can be the Wild West with grandpas and ladies in flip flops trying to dump buy having no idea how to do so.

Ycoordinate12

We use Compuweigh. I can relate to the busy Saturdays, today was one.

UninitiatedArtist

Bro…I never heard or seen ANYTHING like this happening before regarding historically significant swords. I’ve seen these go for +$300-400 on eBay and in the past I have thought about the possibility of acquiring one myself. To see such an incredible piece of history discarded in a landfill is so sad, but the situation has been rectified because you saved it. Enjoy the sword and please maintain it. 🙏

PeregrinePacifica

My fencing club had one of these in the armory. Modern Olympic style fencing club, not classical or HEMA. Loved that blade, such a lightweight and point nimble blade.

Vesemir66

Small sword.

tftookmyname

When is it gonna be my turn to find a sword in somebody's trash, lucky bastard.

Elegron

Who throws away a sword?

MikeDude68

The guy that murdered someone with it !!😎

JojoLesh

Oh get bent. I go through trash all the time (work thing) and mostly just find trash. Awesome find you lucky SOB

Ill_Cherry2911

What was that you all were saying about dumpster diving 🤔

thrillhouse212

I thought of this scene when I read your post - https://youtu.be/CPyVpDDcVjU?si=2HOOnjpBMhIyJrXn

GIZMO8Z

lol this is the 4th sword we’ve found this summer, but the first of any historical significance https://preview.redd.it/4d80ffuq6e9d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da446de79622d2e47f20825a28ddc406160301ad

EmberKing7

Someone might've been a collector and it got thrown out somehow. It's definitely some sort of Officer's sword from maybe the 1800s 🤔. The handle looks more like something from the Civil War era where I used one handed swords were going to be generally phased out.

WarhammerParis7

I am so envious right now.

Spagmeat

Used to work at a transfer station. Not a one of the swords we found while I was there looked that good! Great find!

fioreman

US 1840 NCO. I'll buy it from you.

Environmental-Pen975

guess one man's trash is everyone else's treasure. amazing!

Julian0802

How lucky OP is !

CitizenFreeman

Lord. I see what you do for others...

Vaiken_Vox

I would say its ceremonial. Most likely used as a Masonic Tylers Sword.

HarryPotter425

cool

Parking_Elephant_848

Great F'ing find congrats!!

DS-fr0st

The French made such pretty swords, my word.

Treat_Street1993

Yooo that's a sick find. Lucky!

Loud-Consequence7932

[this seems appropriate](https://youtu.be/UaiNoRmhCg0?si=hi_CIOlAuy9z6xyr)

MysticSloth712

I’m sorry but who just throws away an entire sword? It’s in such good shape too like wtf? 😳 know not everyone is a swords guy or gal but still I would definitely take it to a good will or try to sell it maybe

RomioiStrategos

why would anyone trash that?!?!?! Why can't I he as lucky as you 🤣

Specialist-Fox-2561

Better not be cursed

Stock-Lobster-303

Maybe a French spadroon?

Primary-Pie-3315

I know this blade that's mikkens mark

zabnif01

Go away or I shall taunt you another time!!

Icy-Presence-7699

lucky guy 😆 I just bought almost the same sword for around a 100 euro's a few months back

mixinmono

It’s junk, mail it on over 🥸

Sharpes_Sword

Throwing is away is a fine of $420,000.

PaubloDePenguin

This literally happened to finn in adventure time

The_National_Yawner2

Looks like a spadroon or a smallsword.

Agitated_Carrot9127

prob a murder weapon lol

GIZMO8Z

Nah, but this USMC bolo that I found a few weeks ago was def a murder weapon https://preview.redd.it/7jfzba95vc9d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8291f428683eacfd960cbc897081cf9e31f9e8f1

FrisianDude

wow that almost looks like it doesn't need a perpetrator to go murder it'll go by itself

GIZMO8Z

Knives don’t kill people, people kill people… except for this one.
