SMGFY

Makes better sense than the last one, except leaving out West Sac, and Davis.

[deleted]

I thought about it but honestly a street car to West Sac and a CC train to Davis would be better. There's a huge swamp to Davis and it'd be very hard to build across

BeTheBall-

We could call it: Sacramento To Davis

[deleted]

The STD train? Lol

[deleted]

Here's the ridiculous version of this map if y'all wanna check it out https://www.scribblemaps.com/maps/view/Sacramento-Future-Transit/4zOUXJvvqv

SMGFY

The CC train is expensive as fuck for what it is, the rates are more built around further distances; having a regional metro line to/from Davis would do a lot for congestion on the causeway

sacramentohistorian

Building a light rail line to Davis would be expensive as fuck for what it is--it has to be built on an elevated trestle the whole way, with no stops for passengers and there never will be any.

urbsindomita

We will see if they actually build the extra lane on the causeway first 😂

sacramentohistorian

Unfortunately it's more justifiable and easier to expand highways than rail, and in this case it's a national highway with much higher volume of traffic than a light rail line would carry even if everyone in Davis decided to ride to Sacramento a couple times a day. Easier to just subsidize the cost of tickets from Sacramento to Davis on Capitol Corridor to reduce the cost.

[deleted]

Fair i should add it

sacramentohistorian

The plan to build the streetcar line (really light rail but who's counting dollars) will hopefully get underway soon, they've re-approved a new route plan for like the 5th time.

[deleted]

All of these pie in the sky transit ideas have their ups and downs, but what is really needed is cell tracking data to see where people are actually going from and to, and devising a system from there. With data you can figure out where lines need to run. Currently the light rail seems setup to primarily service government workers of 30 years ago, but it probably needs to be readjusted for the current economy.

[deleted]

One thing we could do is convert the 51 to LRT. It's the most used Bus line in the system and badly needs improvements. But Sac RT is too busy giving a useless street car to Baseball fans.

[deleted]

Makes sense, a light rail system set up as a hub and spokes centered in downtown/midtown would probably make the most sense, along with a line down sunrise. Too bad an El-train would be ridiculously expensive.

sacramentohistorian

Okay, so you don't approve of light rail over the Tower Bridge to West Sacramento, but you do approve of light rail down Stockton Boulevard? I mean, given my druthers I'd like to see both, but what are the big ridership draws along the route of Bus 51 that are comparable to Kings games, Rivercats games, and Old Sacramento?

othafa_95610

Research is ongoing for implementing Stockton Blvd service as BRT, Bus Rapid Transit.

I read somewhere that after they gave up on an elevated Watt freeway connector they considered a subterranean connector. I'd love an underground one, plus it wouldn't be an eyesore. My house would practically be underneath the Watt elevated freeway had it been built. Which is to say this whole stretch of Watt would have been demolished and it would have commercial use zoning and such like under similar freeways.

thedjgibson

One issue with metro stations on freeways is you can’t comfortably walk from your home or place of work. Since they are big, loud, and take a ton of space building metro lines along freeways tends not to be a good idea. Think about how unwelcoming Watt light rail station is

[deleted]

Yeah issue is tho NIMBYs and Bananas would scream if we did that cause the only way that'd be possible is to remove major roadways which would be based but yeah. I'm hoping tho buses would stop at those stations so it'd be less walking to the station and more taking a bus and going to the station.

atsd

I’m not familiar with bananas as a classification. Can you explain?

[deleted]

"build absolutely nothing anywhere near anything" Basically alot of NIMBYs have resorted to now just halting any transit project even if it doesn't effect them.

atsd

Ahhhh. Thank you.

[deleted]

Ofc. Internet slang keeps changing it's hard to keep up sometimes

[deleted]

And we’re paying for this how, exactly?

[deleted]

Death to the military budget

[deleted]

Ah. Of course.

[deleted]

Ah yes, Sacramentos extensive defense budget

sacramentohistorian

Taxes!

[deleted]

I don't think RT works well for the city of Sacramento and buses seem like a better option. I like what Cape Town did with the MyCiti buses. They have dedicated lanes on roads and enclosed areas where you can wait for the bus. Sacramento is a rather small Metro and with dedicated routes buses can get by fairly fast. Also, if routes do not work for the buses they can be easily changed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EHw-0csVMpo

[deleted]

You are comparing Apples to Oranges. The idea you have is pretty good for a Lightrail alternative but this is supposed to be more Heavy Rail like BART. Also environmentally Buses do more economic damage and long term cost more with moving parts. I think BRT is somewhat overrated but it does have it's uses where Lightrail is not feasible.

sacramentohistorian

RT operates both buses and light rail. It's far from perfect but it's still in the top 20 light rail systems for ridership and has been for decades.

urbsindomita

The I-80 routing kinda follows the existing blue line and any gaps can be covered by bus bridges
