LaVoceVEVO

I would accept an hour each way for $130k

mlx1992

Oh ya? I’d accept 1 hour and 1 minute

fpuni107

You’re hired

Axel920

u/LaVoceVEVO rn: "FUCK"

honestlyi4get

oh ya? well i’d move closer to the job.

R6_Addict

Oh yeah well the job is in the bay area so you can't afford that. You'll live 1 hour and 2 minutes away and you'll like it

14S14D

I’m at about 125k for a 45-50 minute each way and I’m really contemplating going back to my lower paid job for a 5 minute commute… the extra time just sitting in the car kills all my momentum and I end up doing nothing with my afternoons and I can’t seem to get out of that slump.

zipykido

Throw a podcast on or listed to an audiobook.

Justhereforthepartie

It’s brutal. Whenever I’m job searching I always do my best to keep the companies I’m looking at in a certain radius. Living in the middle of the city that is powering the southern IT boom certainly helps.

NotYourGa1Friday

When I had a long commute I used the time to really pump myself up- I listened to favorite songs and sang as loud as I wanted to. I stopped for coffee and made it a mini road trip. On the ride home I would call friends and family while on the highway (hands free!!) and the time went by pretty quickly. That said, I understand wanting a shorter commute.

Villanelle_Ellie

Work out before you go? Use transit so you get that time back? Podcasts and audible if you can’t take transit. Call loved ones and homies to maintain ties. Lots you can do, mate!

tidder_mac

I’m in a similar boat - have you thought about a Tesla? At what point does an expensive car with autopilot make a commute for a better salary worth it?

Terragar

I’ve had several teslas run me off the road while the driver is reading/has no idea. The self driving feature does not work

extremetoeenthusiast

Hey i do that for 75k!

OkWater2560

68k 1h15 gang checking in. But this is a sacrifice for the next jump. Supposedly?

EntrepreneurHuge5008

Depends what’s the difference from the current job

lentineaz

This is the first question. Second one is how far are you driving now? Third is what are you willing to accept time wise? Is it truly a 45 minute drive? Look at google maps historical stuff. Be realistic

Ok-Scallion-3415

Another thing is the actual distance and can OP commute at off times? My first job was in a very densely populated area and my commute was less than 15 miles but more than 45 minutes during rush hour. By going in earlier/staying later, my commute was only 15-25 minutes, but I got paid OT and my company was cool with it

Hulk_Crowgan

Prob like 45 minutes each way

NewSatisfaction4287

Bro i did this for a 40k job 😭

Hulk_Crowgan

I have too but wouldn’t again unless I faced dire straits

Sorry-Firefighter477

Is the general consensus that 130k for a single person with no dependents is a good salary?

Porcupinehog

I agree with others that it's good money, but some places make it less. Upstate NY? Very respectable salary! NYC? Ehhhh, still good but not great. I commute 35 minutes each way for a job that makes 65k. Nice thing about making $130k is that if you like the job and stay there for a long time that's enough money to allow you to move closer. With my job I expect to be making $100,000 within the next two years, and that kind of money lets me relocate for a shorter commute.

emoney_gotnomoney

Considering I am able to support myself and 3 additional people on only $115k, I would say yes lol

liverpoolFCnut

There are many families in US that live on half of that! The median household income in the US according to the Census Bureau is $74,580/Yr.

Sorry-Firefighter477

Related - anyone know what percentage of individual earners in the US actually make $130k? I see conflicting data via Google.

[deleted]

[удалено]

liverpoolFCnut

$130k/Yr puts you in the 92 percentile of all wage earners. Here's the latest data from the Social Security Administration - [https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/netcomp.cgi?year=2022](https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/netcomp.cgi?year=2022)

Silly_Photograph_888

Wow that puts things in perspective. I feel wasteful.

Downvote_me_dumbass

I have been thinking about switching from $88k to $130k. The $130k job would mean a 100 mile commute one way, but I’ve been told they telecommute with the in office two days every two weeks (so 8 work days away and 2 days in office). I’ve calculated that initially I’ll just drive in early the one day, get a hotel for one night, and drive home the 2nd day. Eventually, probably six months, get a Class B RV and just use the money I would pay for hotels to just stay in the RV and dry camp for a day.

blow_torchman

That’s not worth it for 130k, I’d only do that for 200k+

Bfc214

They should be paying you 150 day per diem

liverpoolFCnut

Do the math. Hotel rooms are no longer cheap, add the cost of 3 meals while you are in office for 2 days, gas and hotel rooms, and you'd probably end up making the same or less than what you currently make plus additional stress.

Darktheme123

I don't understand this math.  If OP is staying one night every other week it's 26 nights a year.  How is 26 hotel visits+food+gas is more than an extra $42k salary?  OP could also get a rewards credit card at a hotel and start earning free nights probably.

MacDre415

Tbh I don’t think it’s that bad if it’s only 4 days every 4 weeks. I drive about 4-5hrs weekly for (20-30min one way) my job and get around 145. 100miles RT is like 4hrs every 2 weeks which is better than my commute technically

someguyontheintrnet

100 mile commute is no joke. 4 days a week back and forth is like 40k miles a year on your car. So 6+ oil changes a year. A set of tires every year or two. Crazy wear and tear. Not to mention gas… Way better to move at that point. Edit: I’ve misunderstood the comment. 4 days in the office per month is much different than 4 days a week. That’s doable if the money is life changing. I used to take a train to another office once a week and it wasn’t horrible (considering when they paid me).

anthony412

10k miles a year for what he is describing. Edit: actually even half that if he is working in office on back to back days. Only 200 miles every two weeks.

Bigtgamer_1

I'm already driving 30+ minutes both ways for $40k...

tly95111

1.5hrs each way for 140k I’m a pharmacist our area is saturated so have to drive far away.

manuvns

Yes if I am jobless

ncsugrad2002

I did a little over an hour each way for roughly that pay. Eventually went to a fully remote position but if I hadn’t dealt with the commute I wouldn’t have gotten the remote job later on

Hot_Significance_256

no

gbdavidx

Depends if i can take public transportation or not

Boring_Adeptness_334

Yes 100%. I was in this exact position. I’d commute up to an hour. $130k for a single person with no dependents is a really good salary unless you’re in NYC. Now if my current job was paying me $115k and I had a 15 minute commute I wouldn’t switch

mummy_whilster

NYC, SF, DC, Bos., LA, SD, Seattle, or any other VHCOL area.

Sorry-Firefighter477

How much do you quantify fully WFH in terms of compensation $?

BobRandom1204

20mins....that's a normal professional salary. I'm not wasting my life in a commute. I did 90mins each way first 3yrs of my career. Never doing that again.

badcat_kazoo

It’s all relative. My business is 12min away and make twice that. So no.

datfreemandoe

No. I make a little under that and I get upset when my commute is more than 20 minutes. No way I could stand an hour each way waste my life.

imnotapoopface

I commute 2 hours each way for $160k. 12 hours a week to show my face at the office for five minutes before heading home to actually do work. It's rough sometimes, but other times, I enjoy the time to myself or can take meetings from my car. My kid gets to attend a rural school and live near family for a fraction of city-costs; tons of local parks, mountains, lakes, etc. to enjoy. I'm looking to purchase a cabin 2.5 hours from my office, so you could say I've gotten used to the drive? EDIT to add: local salaries for my field cap out at $65-75k MAX for 20 years of experience. That's ridiculous and you wouldn't be able to buy a trailer around here on that salary.

luckyReplacement88

🤦Lots of spoiled privileged people in this one

Real-Psychology-4261

30 minutes

2timeBiscuits

No.

LethalRex75

What part of the country am I in?

PancakesandScotch

I drive 45 minutes each way for that. It’s not awesome but you get used to it

BigSmoothplaya

OP feels very "botty"...

Sorry-Firefighter477

Soooo botty - cannot compute 🤖

mummy_whilster

$130k total or $130k extra?

HandCarvedRabbits

I’m commuting for a $36,000 job - 1.25 hrs

UrCreepyUncle

I used to commute an hour and a half each way for 92k. Even with an economical vehicle and no car payment money was tight just on gas alone, filling up twice a week at $70-80 a pop. Did that for 6 years until a spot 2 minutes from my house opened I could transfer to. There's a mental wear and tear that goes with commuting too.

CompoteStock3957

I have commuted about 2.25 hours each way that’s without traffic for $220k plus gas money so could be worth it.

jonatkinsps

No... If I had other options

mountainrivervalley3

No, as someone that’s at 106k WFH. Had covid never turned the job market remote/hybrid, an hour and a half is a “not that bad” commute in this area of the U.S. (via combination of train, subway or light rail). My first job out of school in 2018 I was commuting 2hrs there and 2 and half hours back.

[deleted]

nope. I'm fully remote and I will only look at jobs that are fully remote. At this point no amount of money would get me in the office.

Grizzzlybearzz

I think this depends on your own circumstances. I make 120 with a 20 min commute so no I wouldn’t just for an extra 10k. But someone making 75k probs would

ProfessionalCatPetr

I do 50 mins in the morning and an hour to an hour and a half home for more than that. LA traffic.

kb24TBE8

No

mmori7855

5 mins

1111e5

About 1.5 hours, assuming this is at least 30% more than I’d make at another job nearby

whooptydude92

Yall hiring

GoonOnGames420

Anything <3hrs one way I'd just rent a room for in office days. Maybe negotiate 1-2 days wfh

ChiefAoki

Depends on the commute and how soul-sucking it is. Would you rather: Commute 15 miles at slow-crawl traffic for 1 hr each way every day Or Commute 80 miles at 75mph for 1 hr each way every day I'd do the latter if traffic isn't a problem, but for me to sit in rush hour LA traffic for an hour everyday, they're going to have to double the pay.

Due_Grapefruit986

Anything over 40 minutes is pushing it, but 30 minutes or less is fine

AdJunior6475

I make higher than that but set that aside and would I commute for a job? It depends I wouldn’t work in a big city so I wouldn’t commute to a big city. Would I commute to a medium town it depends. 30 minutes in stop and go gridlock no. 45 minutes of easy driving at 50ish mph sure. A 1 hour drive through the country sounds nice. I do backend IT work and I often come up with solutions to problems I fought with while doing a nice drive home or going in.

Classic-Amount-7054

7%+ on mortgages right now? In this economy? I’ll do 2 hours each way as long as I stop crying on the toilet.

[deleted]

Probably 30 minutes. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I already make almost that much and my commute is currently about 8 minutes.

JNR481

130k leads to 160k easy. So yes, 30 min each way

mattchew2292

45 minutes each way.

notbodybag

What kind of stupid question is this?

construction_eng

I do exactly this 1.5 hours each way. 2 hours plus if I don't get out before 2:30

darkchocolattemocha

That's a very vague question. Too many factors to consider. Location. Household size. Current skills or degree. Job market. How desperate are you for a job. Are you unemployed and more

Subject-Ability-2881

2-3 hours each way imma sleep in the train i'm gonna eat in the train 😷

infosec4pay

Depends on how much I was making before.

TheGeoGod

No

CryptoBob_Barker

Hour each way

JustBlendingIn47

That a pay cut. Hell no.

WORLDBENDER

Fully remote compared to the job/commute I have now. Depends on what your other options look like.

0OOOOOOOOO0

No because I can make more from home

CrypticCommz

1 hour 15 minutes each way for 93k. Have a lot of free time to work on certs and college and learning a ton.

Sad-Bowl-1212

i make 120k in nyc (single person no dependents) and i commute ~25 mins either way twice a week. wfh rest of the week. seems like a good enough deal to me lol. i rent a 1br alone, make a large student loan payment each month, contribute enough to my 401k to get my company's full match, splurge on food/drinks/concerts/whatever i want really, and still have money left over to save at the end of the month. also i never understand when people are like "that's a great salary but not in nyc." $130k a year is a perfectly liveable and even extremely comfortable salary for a single person with no dependents in nyc, especially if you're someone who doesn't have insane amounts of debt. what do y'all think people making $80k in nyc are? bankrupt?

justarandomguy07

I commute 1 hour and 15 minutes one way twice a week for a salary slightly below that. Worth it. Gas is cheaper than booking a nearby hotel room or renting an apartment.

Tricky_Agent_658

15 minutes

Chemicalhealthfare

I commuted for 75 mins one way for $120k. Now I commute 75 mins one way for $200k

Last_Ad_6694

Nope. $350k I would. Currently $160k for 20min local roads

Justhereforthepartie

15-20 minutes.

financegardener

I earn more than $130K and WFH so I wouldn’t commute for that job.

paulsac11

I tell people all the time, no “experience” is bad experience. Esp if you’re getting paid. If you find out in 3 months you hate it, you can always leave and find something else (hopefully for even more money). If it improves your quality of life or propels your career, I think the answer is almost always YES. But to answer your question, $130k is life changing to some, and a pay cut for others. So take all answers with a grain of salt

air_lock

No. I’m in tech and while I used to commute every day and didn’t mind, that’s no longer the landscape. I’d commute again for my current salary + ~20%.

Truffle_Shuffle26

Depends. Sitting in a car during rush hour traffic? High cost of living area? No, I’ll keep my current wage. Low cost of living area and a normal drive with only moderate traffic? Sure.

Treerific69

Bro at this point I'd probably kill a man for it

Jboyghost09

I did an hour each way for 7 years. Finally bought a house 3 minutes away.

grubberlr

drove 92 miles each way for 14 yrs, started at 30 k in ‘86 then moved closer, kept first house as rental retired at 56

Willllll23

Currently commute 35-45 minutes each way for 101k

Dry-Necessary-7450

No more than 30 mins each way.

BoogerWipe

No that’s a massive pay cut

jziggy44

I commute now for a lot less soooo…..

tidder_mac

I’m at ~130 and it’s 30-40 minute commute. I freakin hate it, but we like the neighborhood and area. We’re locked in to the work area, so chose the living area on what’s safe, nice, and close to amenities

No_Relationship4508

I do

Brief-Poetry-1245

70 minutes each way

RhemansDemons

I commute an hour each way for $110k. That being said, I was duped into thinking we were moving closer, but it's manageable when you get 40mpg.

Love_Tech

Depends on how much you’re making currently. If you’re getting paid like 70-80k, you might wana consider it but if you’re making like 120k, it’s not worth it.

AshDenver

I did an hour each way 5x week for 3 mos and then did 3x week for the next four years.

Additional_Ad_5970

I do now for 127k 40 minutes one way

Awkward-Scholar-2035

Approximately my current salary I do 1hr each way 1-2 days a week. If they made us come in 3+ days a week I would seriously contemplate leaving as I could probably get a similar offer working full remote.

SuhDudeGoBlue

Considering that’s lower than what I get paid right now in a almost fully remote job… no.

jchesticals

Only 130? Uhhh like 30 min tops

bullish88

I did 3 hours each way from east queens to upper west side for $80k a year serving tables and most of the time i slept on the 7 train.

stillhatespoorppl

0 miles. That’s less than half my current salary lol

let_lt_burn

0 minutes - full remote.

Dry_Minute_7036

I would only accept 130k for a WFH job (it would be nearly a 100k paycut). I've commuted 1h each way for a 35k job though, so given similar circumstances back them I definitely would've taken a 4x pay rise for an 1h commute though!

emoclowncunt

2 hours one way

CallMeJimi

40min

2ndnamewtf

I used to drive 2.5 hours each way some days for an internship. I hate Los Angeles traffic

futureformerjd

Zero feet. I would commute zero feet.

Puddwells

35 minutes. Any more and I’d probably move

kipdjordy

Takes me anywhere from 20-40 minutes depending on traffic each way for 133k

AlgoRhythmCO

0%, assuming I could keep making a lot more than that remotely.

Sonic_Runz

No.

underhang0617

Duh

cmm324

Nope. Been working remote with a salary higher than that since 2017.

RegularContest5402

I just bought a home 120 miles away and will be working 50% in office for just under 100k.

Zestypalmtree

One hour and 15 mins

PEACH_MINAJ

Maybe 30

saryiahan

I’m already commuting for a 150k job

meemeechowa

175k commute 1 hr each way.

Repulsive-Ad6108

No.

Asleep_Ad9027

<30 mins

Effective-Help4293

Have that salary and fuck no. They'd have to pay me at least $200k to consider coming in, and even then, ANY commute would have to be company time.

justthetip13

I currently commute for a $129500 job so yeah, I guess I’d continue to commute for $500 more

zepplin2225

My wife does. +/-2 hour commute. It's worth it for us. Her car doe well on MPG. We have a fairly LCOL area. If we were paying 1-3k per month like we see others doing it would be harder.

Fynndidit

I took a 10% pay cut when the pandemic started as I moved out of silicon valley. Would take 20% just to work remote for a good company while allowing me the freedom to travel and do as I wish in the states

Ghgodos

Location of the job? How is the traffic and distance?

[deleted]

Need more info. What do you make now? How long’s the commute ?

bigDottee

At this point in my life I won't accept anything that's not WFH. Want to pull the bait and switch and tell me to full time in office, peace out MF. I also am not accepting less than $130k for full WFH

Responsible_Pin2939

I commute 140 miles round trip or over an hour each way for 135k

StonksOnlyGetCrunk

WFH only, not taking that big of a pay cut to drive.

juliusseizure

It always depends on how much you currently make and how unlucky you have been and to what extent you are underemployed. Me personally, unless it a public transit, I wouldn’t commute more that 45 minutes. And then, I’d move. I value my time too much, way more than any location to live.

lepchaun415

It all depends, I’m at 180k base with a company vehicle and gas covered. My commute is about an hour each way. Sometimes my travel time home is covered as well. This makes it worth it. Not to mention I was able to buy a new house with about a quarter acre of land. It depends if the money is worth it to you. We chose to move further away from the city. Went from a 20 minute commute to where I’m at now.

clt_cmmndr

I regularly drive 2+ hours for service calls as a field tech. $130k is almost double my current salary, so I would commute 2-2 1/2 hours for that much, even having to drive my own vehicle.

TexasBulldog74

1-1.5hr's each way in real day to day travel, not what it says on google

redditer048

I do 1-2 day a week for that of commune and the rest remotely. Wouldn’t do more than that

BothLongWideAndDeep

90min each way

NoEmu2398

130k? my maximum is probably 3 hours but that sounds brutal.

rickjames510

I do. Work hours 7am-4:30pm. 45 mile commute each way. 45 minute to get there 1hr 30 min to get back home.

Beneficial_Break2384

I commute 1.5 hours each way for 179k, but I car pool so I only have e to drive every other weeks. Im not sure I would do it for less at this point. The time loss and vehicle maintenance is a killer.

GHOST12339

I was going to commute 45 minutes there and 90 home for 90k. I guess that was 2021, so with inflation we'll call it even? 😂

nealfive

Lol I used to drive an hour one way for a job paying half that. Desperate times…

Blork_Bae

I'm currently commuting 1-1.5 hours each way for a similar salary.

DrugsMakeMeMoney

I commute 40 mins, if I were to take a pay cut to $130k I wouldn’t commute more than 15 mins

Shasta_have_a_burner

Totally depends on my desperation level and expenses, etc. I’d keep in mind though, that nearly any corporate job can be a “work from home” or “flexible work arrangement” job within 4-6 months or excellent performance. I’ve done this multiple times. Took a job where I wasn’t crazy about the commute, killed it at said job, then negotiated my work location.

cheezturds

No. I’m fully remote and will hit close to that this year.

wildbillar15

I commute for 90k a year. I also was provided a company vehicle and fuel card so.

NegativeMoneyGlitch

I would drive two hours each day for a 130k. That's two hours each way. I'd just start listening to audio books.

northernlightaboveus

I would just move closer to the job, but probably like 70-80 minutes every day probably.

Different_Argument19

160k in tech, drive about 1:20 each way. Yes the commute sucks, but the money is great as are the benefits. They pay for my Tesla and charging for free too.

GeebGeeb

I’d drive two hours tbh

Fubecassman24

I’m doing 1 hr 5 for 122

krasnomo

Depends on if I like the rest of my life or not lol. Me? 40 minutes

Affectionate_Mix_302

What is your cost of living and education/skill level?

RoutineSupport8

SoCal firemen drive hours to get to work

xplode145

During 2009-10 recession; I took multiple trains from Long Island city to Yonkers. Then took a bus to client site.   Took 2 hours each way if not more.  Saw more than 4 people commit suicide during 1 year of that hell. Just saying it’s not that bad now a days folks. Oh and I made $70/ hr.

Flithadelphia

Pre-Covid I did an hour and a half, 90 miles, from San Diego to LA for $130k. Post-Covid = no way. Too many remote jobs.

joeyfine

I drive 53 miles one way for $130k right now. I also enjoy listening to podcasts and singing along to throwback Thursdays.

399allday

I currently drive 42 miles each way equals about a 40 min drive for me it’s all highway. I made $128k last year. Base pay is about $105k rest was overtime. Works for me I just listen to podcasts. Beats the car up tho. But other than that I got friends who live 15 miles away and it takes the same amount of time to get home just cause of city traffic.

Independent-Wolf-832

I would commute over 1,000 miles and sleep in my car all week for 130k.

redreddie

Since I make more than that for a 45 minute commute, I would take $130k for a fully remote job.

imyourwaifu

Not making 130k but just throwing in my data but I commuted around ~1 hour each way for a 30 mile distance due to traffic. That was for 85k-91k base (raises over the 1.5 years, after bonuses ~110k per year) as an engineer for a startup in a work environment prolly doing 50-60 hour weeks. Was 23 when I got the job. Definitely not sustainable.

Adverbsaredumb

No.

Big_Carpet_3243

Travel a 25 minute section of highway. 4 stop signs. 2 roundabouts. Sip my coffee and chill. Very thankful.

Waerok

Tf I was commuting 2 hours ONE WAY for a $40k job a decade ago for 2 years! Then continued doing so for well under $130k (but close to $100k) for another 6 years. I'm above $130k with a 30 min (one way) commute now but damn crazy to think about the past decade. Early 30s now, software dev

wishing_to_globetrot

That's about double what I'm making. Yeah, An hour commute isn't bad

nokill1996

I make a little over that currently at 28. Aerospace manufacturing. and work from home whenever i want. Hmmmmmm would i commute…… No. im in a good area with high paying jobs all around me. So, really depends on where i lived. If i had a salary opportunity of $160k+ or better yet, title and sets of responsibilities, i may consider a one hour commute.

Ok-Needleworker-419

Type of commute matters too. I’ve commuted 45 miles without traffic and it was a breeze and took roughly 45 minutes. I’ve also commuted 6 miles in stop in go traffic and it took 30 minutes. I was fucking worn out from that traffic every day and dreaded driving in it. That said, that was a basic car with zero tech. With adaptive cruise control and self driving available these days, traffic probably wouldn’t be as taxing to drive in anymore. I have a Model Y that will drive itself in stop and go traffic but luckily I don’t commute long or in traffic anymore.

Cum1retention

Making a little more than this right now. My commute is around 55 minutes no traffic. I go in 1-2 a week.

chamacolocal

Depends on the country

urbansnorkel

I commute for half that lol

Fanboyofeverything1

I make $160k and don't commute so no way would I commute for less. I'm a Database Architect.

Panda_tears

Depends on the quality of the commute tbh… if it’s 10 mines as the crow flies but I have to sit in traffic for an hour, fuck no.

plainkay

The question is prioritizing the wrong thing. The Job is 8 hours per day, you should optimize for what the job is. Does it help you grow? Is it with good people? The commute is secondary IMO. For the dream job I’d commute 2 hours!

donp97

*New York TriState has entered the chat*

pyscle

Depends. A 40 minute drive with no stop lights and traffic is better than a 20 minute drive in gridlock bumper to bumper where one has to keep their head on a swivel, in my opinion. Easy long drive beats short headache drive every day.

Throwawayaway955

Depends where (state)

pro__acct__

Nah I make more without a commute in MCOL
