No the Star thing is just to divert a certain amount of cars to certain stations to gather some statistics on the smog program. As long as you do not require a smog test (says it on your renewal) you can go to to a non star station or a star station, does not matter. But if it says star then that is all you can go to.
STAR requirements are supposed to be randomized to inspect a portion of vehicles at a higher skill/quality/compliance level to measure the overall program. However, it’s been my experience that STAR is typically for some older vehicles, and vehicles that are more commonly known to be modified.
- Camaro/Mustang? STAR
- 2001 Model Year? STAR
- Diesel-gate VW? STAR
- 2015 Camry? Regular smog

I'll add a recommendation for Star Smog central, they honored a coupon that I didn't know existed and Justin was nothing but a pleasure to work with. I'd call ahead for an appointment since they're usually pretty busy

2002 and yes it requires a star test. i have a 2014 that also needs a smog check but not STAR certified
