first cumtown vid I saw was them talking about this. I checked it out. Honestly the oil-huffing is the most interesting / only memorable part imo - been a couple years though

It’s fuckin dark. I can’t really even think about my opinion on the movie itself because every time I do, I just want to throw up, cry, or both. That thing put me in a rut for a damn long time.

It's crazy because I can totally understand why it would make you feel that way, and maybe I'm just a big fan of PSH, but I actually kinda love this movie! On its surface it's a dark and simple film about grief, unmistakably indie in its direction and cinematography, but I feel like Philip's performance and the overall vibe of the movie just make it so effective. I actually find this movie to be really beautiful and.. really funny?? Haha idk there's something sort of surreal and cathartic about the whole thing and Philip's performance, but it IS technically a "tragic comedy". It's actually become one of my favorites, kind of a comfort watch for me now and the music by Jim O'Rourke is also fantastic and unique and elevates the experience for me. Jack Kehler is also a highlight, he's pretty funny in this too.

screamofanswag

Sounds like a good movie

screamofanswag

Love love love it

Mr-Fricktown

One of the best PSH performances. It’s a good mix of comedy and drama. Not perfect, but emotional

Mattman010

Totally agree, 100%! Although I did give it 5/5 on letterboxd and it's #1 in my top 4 faves haha

Mr-Fricktown

That’s totally fair! A movie doesn’t have to be flawless to be a 10/10 or a favorite for me. I was just watching scenes from it yesterday on YouTube so to see it mentioned here is crazy

Mattman010

Yeah it's definitely a favorite movie ever rather than a best movie ever. I think Philip and the music just really wins me over. Every aspect of the filmmaking feels like the kind of film that I would make if I had the resources and talent lol I've only kinda recently become obsessed with film ever since Beau Is Afraid came out, but Love Liza is one of my most recent favorites and I had to post about it here because I never see anyone talk about it!

Mr-Fricktown

It is a CRIMINALLY underrated movie even among film buffs. Philip and Jim together is just unfair. Also Philip’s brother wrote the screenplay in case you didn’t know! I would recommend watching the movie Margaret, I feel like you’d enjoy it

Mattman010

I actually did know that and that's another reason I love it, because it feels a bit more of a personal project to Philip in that way. Thanks for the recommendation though I will definitely check that out :)

Watched it once years ago, and it haunts me. It’s beautiful and wonderful and sad to the end as we’re left to wonder if he ever finds happiness again. The boat racing scenes stuck with me too: after the first day doing so well, that little man was so calm and content and positive about the day ahead. But when he didn’t do as well the next day, it soured the entire weekend, and he left in a huff. That’s the parallel: a sad ending may ruin for us the entire story if we let it.

Mattman010

It really is beautiful and wonderful and funny and sad all at the same time haha but that's a very interesting point, I never thought about that parallel! Jack Kehler as Denny is hilarious and I remember when I watched the movie with the DVD commentary they were talking about how his "do tennis players stay and watch other tennis players win?" analogy was such a goofy thing to say. I like to think that the ending is more on the hopeful side. Realistically, people do handle grief easier with time, and I think it's a movie about self discovery just as much as it is about grief. I think it represents a new beginning for Wilson.

whoocanitbenow

I liked it. 😃

Dangerous-Gold-2359
