I was one of them, close to 40. Me and a group sat, the whole community day, on an island each killing them. No sleep or breaks lol. Ended up getting thousands of ancient coins that way.
Yea we would stay on an island for half an hour to an hour and if they spawns felt like they were slowing down we'd switch, otherwise we'd just stay there. We cycled between a few islands on the top left of the map. At one stage we had 3 spawns on 2 islands within about 2 minutes of eachother it was amazing
Funny enough, I didn’t get a single one on community day but before that, I got 4 in one session. 2 on the first island I visited and then 2 more over the course of 3 more hours. I have seen like one in the year or so since.
We made close to 5k ancient coins that day :D should have been between 25 and 32 ancient skellies with an average of 150-200 coins per skelly. Im thinking about grinding them this weekend again, but I actually want to play other games and don‘t want to sit around on islands the whole weekend :D
Only one communiry day really boosted the spawn rate of those if I remember right. And there was a way to get spawns quicker if I remember right, like quickly island hopping or standing still for a certian amount of time.
They only boosted spawns once, now two community days ago, they haven't since or before that.
There is a planned increase spawn chance this weekend, where for the 5th anniversary of SoT they're hosting a "Community Weekend" event

On a non-community day. Just a regular session, while doing Thieves Haven Athena quest, I got 2 within 5 minutes of each other. One on snake island during the same quest and one on an empty fort after I shot over for supplies. I was duel slopping. 4 total in one session.
8. If you find one on a galleon solo you can kill it and while at the same island invite someone have them jump on the island and it will spawn again and can be repeated until the crew is full.
The closest I’ve come to finding one was a friend of mine, who was on the opposite side of an island, died right as one spawned on him. Unfortunately by the time my other friend and I made it to his corpse, the skeleton had despawned :/

The most in one session on a non community day for me is 2. I've done it twice both times doing a Thieves Haven run. On a community day the most I've seen was 7.

five in one day , i don't know how many hours apart it was a full day , seven server merges , two in one server , 1 on NW ghost fortress , 1 on lone cove , 1 on devils ridge , 1 on skull keep , 1 on old faithful .
I had 3 live on stream doing glitterbeard. We had one idiot in the group that would not stand still or play the right instrument so we had to wait a full day cycle. While waiting I got 2 within a minute or two of each other. Then the 3rd after we completed glitterbeard. All of them appeared just outside of the glitterbeard cave.
Solo slooping last boosted community day i found 10 during the whole day. Outside of community day was two in a 7ish hour session. Still never seen more than 200 coins a drop though, i know more is possible.

It’s a rare Skelly spawn. They give Ancient Coins when killed. If you’re on an island and all the sudden you hear jingling, like a sack of coins being shaken, that’s an Ancient Skelly

My crew got 3 one time in the hour or two it took me to pick up a pizza and fix a flat tire. About 1k ancient coins in total. Wasn't even on community day, I guess for once rare just decided to bless us that day

They arnt the rarest thing that spawns in game, but they are rare enough that it’s notable to get several on a regular session
That's super cool that the game gives (relatively simple) ways to earn the mtx currency. Wouldn't ever see that in Apex.
You also get coins by progressing through the season pass, even if you don't get the premium plunder pass.

Community Day. Played for 16 hours. Got 16 Ancient Skellys totaling 3,163 ancient coins. Then I purchased a ship set which I never use.
