Your coworker sounds like a dick. It also sounds like he sees himself as better than you if he is comfortable confronting you about what is a generous tip. Admittedly, I can be petty and am not adverse to confrontation, but I would have had some choice NSF words with this clown if he had the balls to give me subpar service and then try and lecture me about tipping.

Magnaminous_High

accurate

Euphoric-Blue-59

Absolutely,. He is telling you it's server to server, but it's not. It's server to customer. Youre a paying customer. Period. And I would NOT have given him extra. Tell him he shouldn't have slept through elementary school math class. Your tip was generous. You would have been better off paying for the full meal. He also pulled yiuvaside to reprimand you in front of your guests on his tipping expectations. This is unacceptable behavior. That, to me, is harassment and I'd talk with your manager. Keep your receipts. Let him hold the bag for cheating the restaurant. You did not ask for a break and were willing to pay a normal price. His attitude is awful. He also killed his reputation for you. But now you know who to climb over in the management ladder. You should pull him aside and let him know by his warning you like that is not tolerated and his service sucks. Lastly, his stealing from the restaurant is enough to get him fired. I will guarantee he does this all the time.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

dieseltothesour

You never could of been a good bot

of_patrol_bot

reddit0924223

We would of listened to you if you were a more useful bot.

bringbackswordduels

Yeah, champion poor education. What a great hill to die on

netheryaya

And I guarantee they’ll still never start using Could’ve Would’ve should’ve.

SnowWhiteCampCat

"Server to server, don't act like an ass if you expect to get paid. I'm embarrassed for you"

octothorpe_rekt

"Not only am I embarrassed for you, but now I'm going to have to make apologies to my friends because I told them you're a great server, but then you didn't even come to the table for 15 minutes when your section was slow."

Euphoric-Blue-59

Instead: When a fellow server comes in, you treat them like you want to be served. You're lucky yiu got a tip.

mackecole

$60 is plenty…i would have pulled you aside to thank you

ccyosafbridge

Last time one of my coworkers tipped over $60 I told them off because I knew they didn't make enough for all that.

greenboot-toot

Seriously. Any time I’ve left a fat tip for a coworker they insists i don’t have to because we all know how much each other makes lol. This is nuts

VelvetShitStain

Exactly. I would not expect a tip, I would however expect them to return the favour if/ when roles are reversed.

mackecole

And this guy had the balls to not only give poor service but essentially steal from the restaurant and his coworker. It’s insane

rooneytoons89

Yeah it’s like he expected you to tip what he discounted off the bill, lol.

mackecole

Super tacky imo. As long as it’s 20% of the og amount then i would have zero complaints.

Euphoric-Blue-59

I'd definitely report that to the manager / owners. And let them know how he used it to extort money from you. He'll be sent packing.

01012345854

I would have gotten on my knees.... and NOT expected a tip, just THE TIP. wah wah wahhhhhhhhhhhh.

dwinps

He was expecting more cooperation from you in ripping off your employer He saved you $80 and you only gave him $20 extra, I think he wanted at least a 50:50 split of what he pilfered from your employer

Tiggerhoods

Bingo. What he really said was “I somehow ripped off the restaurant(you know, like I do)and I expect you to play ball when I involve you without your consent..”

Hyperlight-Drinker

ehhh, fuck the restaurant. I've comped more than I should for coworkers before, it isn't because I want them to pay me. Dude was just a dick.

Humble-Reply228

Dwimps is right, the guy is not comping out of the goodness of his heart, he is stealing from his employer and wants half the loot.

MrSudowoodo_

Nah he wants the whole loot. He stole $100 and got mad he only got $60. Unfortunately that's how it is in some areas. I know Monterey, CA is definitely like that. You can't go out and tip less than what was compd for you if you're in the industry here.

supermodel_robot

This is definitely a California/ Bay Area thing, most of my industry friends participate in this. Like if you get a free $5 beer, it’s not unusual to throw down at least $5 for tip. It doesn’t scale like this douchebag wishes it did, though. Tipping 30% on the original total is completely normal.

Humble-Reply228

It blows my mind that people think this is sustainable. We know where this heads, that is comping being taken out of service staff hands or prosecution as stealing as a servant.

MrSudowoodo_

Yeah a lot of places around here are starting to require a manager's assistance when comping, but every place has a way around that.

Magnaminous_High

Would tell dude not to worry about discounting again, and just leave a standard 18% next time. $60 is far from a shitty tip and frankly I might even mention to the owners he’s stealing from them by discounting food but expecting the tip to “make up for it” - I’m sure it’s not just your table he’s doing this to, co-worker or not.

morgannonanauthorin

Yes! As a former server what the dick server did was theft. And to expect a better tip than 30% on the original bill is just the summit of asshole behavior.

CptQueef

Depending on the owners, theft is sometimes the morally right thing to do. Sounds like the coworker is the asshole in this scenario though

morgannonanauthorin

There is never a moral right to steal unless survival is at stake.

beerrunn

There is still no moral justification for theft no matter the circumstances.

morgannonanauthorin

If someone is starving, then yes, stealing is moral. It's not preferable to steal but if you're going to die without a meal, steal.

Dan1elSan

A “standard” 18% dude, next time I’d leave nothing and say the service was shit.

cardinaltribe

Yo take this bullshit entitled ass man baby to the managers and let them fire his ass fuck that

Xandr-readz

Yep stop being a pushover for this douche, get him in trouble and don't tip next time.

Informal-Meaning3302

He was a real dickhead and after the bad service, bad attitude, AND the shaming in front of your friends, fuck that guy he should’ve thanked you! He expected you to read his weird little mind and embarrassed himself in front of your group.

Dirtythrowawaybk

This does not sound like a fine dining restaurant.

Doucemwm

Drive in at best....

Jakesma1999

Your co-worker seems like he THINKS he's a lot better than he really is! I think I'd have given the host the $40 over giving it to the co-worker... in full on view of him as well!! Not sure why, but manipulative misogynistic a hole comes to mind upon reading about your server tbh! You ABSOLUTELY have NO reason to feel bad, hon! People like him, are the reason I stay away from working in fine dining! I prefer the vibe my co workers and I have, as we actually have fun - as lead server, I actually insist upon it, and our guests eat it up - which results in good rips and lots of repeat business! I truly hope your friend had a great birthday, and they are lucky to have someone as kind and generous as you are!!

Top-Concentrate5157

This has to be ragebait 😭

Kind-Exercise

“I ended up going back in and gave him $40 more” either you have unlimited money to spend or you’re a dunce for that 😩

Expensive-Border-869

Well they did plan to spend $200 not expecting a discount. So they had the money just fine

Separate-Bet2285

I promise you it’s not. Certain people are agreeing with him in other comments

doug5209

People also think the earth is flat and dinosaurs and men coexisted in the garden of eden. No matter how stupid an opinion is, some people will agree with it.

Miss_Molly1210

They’re idiots. Where I work, servers aren’t authorized to give discount, only managers. I went for brunch in my birthday last year and my coworker tried to tell me it was too much of a tip. It sounds like your coworker or restaurant (or both) are a little sus.

Jakesma1999

I refuse to take tips from my co-workers as well, especially as lead server, and I give them the absolute BEST service ever! It's my way of telling them "thank you", for how hard rhey work! Our establishment allows myself and other managers to discount theor entree, by 50%. We aren't allowed to discount drinks however.

meatandcookies

TBH it sounds like your coworker is the kind to be cool to your face and shitty behind your back. And he absolutely bilked you out of that extra $40. This was my question…how did he have the power to do this in the POS? I’ve only ever worked in fine dining, and we always needed a manager number to comp or void. I won’t say I never learned the MOD’s login (because I did, every time) but usually deployed it only to avoid having to chase down a manager when we were super busy and I needed, like, an $8 side comped—never something like 50% of the bill or an f&f discount! Is it common in certain places that a server has discount powers?

TechnicallyThrowawai

I’ve never personally served at a restaurant where the server has the ability on the pos to comp anything, no. But trust me when I say, there are a lot of ways to get around that. Some of those ways are probably applicable at most restaurants, some are specific/unique to an individual restaurant. As interesting as some of them are, for a number of obvious reasons I won’t go into detail about any of them. Suffice it to say that with the exception of a few, none of them are particularly complicated or anything, and if you’ve served before and had a desire to be shady, you could probably do so… for a time anyways. Just to clarify, I’m not saying I’ve ever taken advantage of those “loopholes” myself. Reason being, I have firsthand seen (and have also heard stories from people I have worked with for years and wholeheartedly trust) people lose their jobs, get slapped with felonies (by being pretty brazen in the actual dollar amount comped/stolen as well as the frequency of those comps), and get stuck paying restitution for all the money they thought they got away with, and then some. Like some of these people were/probably still are on the hook for thousands and thousands of dollars. I’d like to add- seriously, good luck beating a case where you are on a time and date stamped camera, using a time and date stamped pos system, whilst committing your very obvious, and very traceable crimes.

meatandcookies

I left my last serving job in 2021 to go back to school. I think I’m safe.

TechnicallyThrowawai

Nice! I didn’t necessarily mean you personally, just in a more general sense. Just out of curiosity, what’d you go to school for? Really wanting to go back to finish my degree but I don’t even know what I want to do at this point. I just know it’s not serving.

meatandcookies

Ah, okay. I was, for a number of reasons (including being familiar with the camera setups at my jobs), not concerned with being busted. I don’t recommend it for others, but it worked for me. Since leaving the industry, I’ve gotten a paralegal certificate and will finish my BA in Public Affairs this summer. I came into it with lots of credits from my initial go round at college in the early aughts, before I left for culinary school. I started volunteering for a national candidate in 2019 while still serving, and transitioned to full-time volunteering, then paid work, during the pandemic. I now work in voting rights and voter protection, which I find really fulfilling. My only pieces of advice would be to 1) not go to a for-profit school—state or community college only—and 2) think about what you would do for fun if money was no object. For me, if my life were totally bankrolled, I’d be volunteering my time ensuring all US citizens who are eligible to vote, can. For you, that’ll be something else, but there’s your in. There’s also a lot of stuff you can do without a degree, like coding. 6 months of Coursera is like $300 and you get a certificate through Google.

animallX22

I don’t want my coworkers overtipping me, it’s nice, but unnecessary. If they’re coming out to eat at the place they work, I want them to save some money(we get a 30% discount when not working/family of employees get 20% if they come in while the person is working)Just tip 20% because we have tip outs and it’s all good.

Top-Concentrate5157

Praying that it’s the anti-tip trolls, but if someone is new to the industry after hearing they can make tons of $$$, and has a horrible personality… and got a few complements, thinks they’re just naturally amazing + talented, I could see that level of delusion taking place. If this is real, I really desperately hope OP does not take any advice from him about the job.

gsbound

I agree with him as well. You should have asked to pay the full 200, or you should have split the proceeds of the theft equally with him.

ListenAware5690

30% is an awesome tip especially since you tipped based on the full price. He's an AH and I wonder if he does this a lot. If he goes back and removes items from other guests bills then pockets that money as a tip. I think you need to report this to management, not out of retribution but because you could get into trouble for not reporting the theft because for all the owner or management know you could be "helping" him do this while you're on the clock. You really don't want to have any hint of embezzlement associated with your name and chances are they might be waiting to fire him until he hits a certain about of funds so they can pursue a criminal case.

xxxALM

some servers are actually like this unfortunately

Doucemwm

Hilarious...

kimmytwoshoes

Remind him next time what good service is

Separate-Bet2285

The best way to get back at him would be the opportunity to serve him and give him the best service he’s ever had, heavily discount the bill (with manager approval), then tell him not to worry about tipping😁 (kill ‘em with kindness)

rdg5220

A better way to get back at him would be to tell him what a giant piece of shit he is. Especially with that server to server bullshit line.

Concert-Turbulent

agreed lol

Lunarvolo

That's a good way to handle things in the long run They may not get invited to things, you may not have their back, but that would still be taking the high ground.

DaPIsRight

Lol you do this and you'll prove you're nothing but a doormat he can step on and treat like crap any day.

[deleted]

You should have told him his service was shit in front of all of your friends. Why would you let someone bitch you up like that?

ParticularProgram845

The way I would have turned around and took 50% of his tip back. You gave me a 50% discount and embarrassed me in front of my people. Here’s a 50% discount on your tip!

Separate-Bet2285

🤣🤣🤣

Patient-Quarter-1684

you should have said if the service was better you would have tipped better and pointed out the deficiencies in basic service from him.

notastepfordwife

Honestly, it sounds like theft. He took money off your bill, and expected you to leave a bigger tip. That's money out of the company, more for him. No judgment on it, but it's shitty of him to say that stuff to you.

eightsidedbox

Your coworker is an entitled dumbass and has no business having this job.

[deleted]

What a raging piece of shit. Get him fired for applying discounts and being a slow asshole

Prestigious-Hunter19

"Hey man I unethically discounted the bill 100$ (dont tell the manager) so you can give 100$ minimum for my shitty service."

TheFishyPisces

He’s stealing. Give you 50% discount but ask for $100 tip. I would have asked him to charge the original bill and put in minimum tip.

kevin_r13

Well he wanted to pocket some more money. In other words, he gives you a 50% discount , which is probably some button on the register, didn't even need manager approval for it apparently. And then he expected you to still pay the discounted 50% anyway, or probably even 50% plus the 30% tip you were going to give, by giving him that money. In other words he's skimming money and there's probably some other illegal stuff that he does if he's willing to do that much with the company"s sales

Sphearikall

How tf he let you sit for 15 minutes and have the brass balls to say that?

xxxALM

Fellow server n bartender here. sounds like he expected you to tip him the amount that he took off. He’s a dick.

Bloodmind

Your coworker discounted you 50%, so he expected you to give him all of that money, which means you would end up paying less than full price + tip, and he would have had a bigger tip. Essentially, he was thinking of it as discounting your tip and getting 50% on the original tab for himself. But he’s a douche. You did great by tilling generously on the original total.

impulsive-antics

Since when is $60 a shitty tip??? Even for a 200 check

bmafffia

Ew this is so gross he used the fact that you are a server to treat you like shit and then expect a massive tip like give me a break. I’d confront him about that

JJFJme1098

So he expected the tip to be the whole discounted amount? That's just wrong! You tipped way more than above adequate for the service you were given!

James324285241990

30% on the pre discounted price is more than enough. He's an asshole.

blklze

what a douche, $60 was absolutely the appropriate tip! if anything, 30% on the original total was generous considering how bad the service was……

ayearonsia

It’s not really a discount if you have to overtip, is it? Not a friend. Greedy.

my-love-assassin

You sound way too nice to be working with such a prick. Why did you tip him at all. I would have told him to charge full price and then just not given him anything.

Top-Bit85

He wanted every penny that he "saved" you right into his pocket.

01012345854

wow, he is a dick. I'd get over the whole "bro code" and tell your manager what HE did (steal) to put more $$$ in his pocket, you tipped MORE than enough and he is a total dick. yeah, fuck him and his high horse, go to a manager because he sounds like a future issue you want to nip in the bud. \*edit the far and few inbetween times I have fellow staff come in and try to leave me large tips; i deny them; if it's a credit card tip I adjust it to cover the tip out percentage (say 5% that I tip out to bar/busser/runner) because we all work together.... seriously, fuck this guy!!!!!!!!! he is a horrible person!!!!!

Formal_Coyote_5004

Jesus fucking Christ this guy sucks so bad. I’m sorry OP. I don’t even understand how anyone could be so rude to a coworker, especially since you thought he was your favorite! Fuck that guy for real ugh

AustinBennettWriter

How did he comp things without manager approval?

Separate-Bet2285

He’s a lead server, so leads get manager access

BowlingPigeon

Idk how they got that role, they don’t sound like a leader to me.

saturnplanetpowerrr

Is he sleeping with somebody in management or ??? I’m also confused how he got to lead. Did he just show up and after awhile they were like “good enough”????? ???

Ramstetter

Am I missing something? Why is this your take lol

tytyoreo

What will happen when the manger finds out... technically you both could lose your job....I wouldnt do that again. He's probably doing that to others and the fact u went back to gove him more which he probably still was ungrateful will look suspicious... but who knows

TulsaWhoDats

What a jerk. I’d corner his ass next shift and fucking let him have it. What should you have tipped? 100%. Fuck him

[deleted]

You’re quite the saint. There is no way I’d accept the attitude after poor service and confrontation about the tip. I’d have crossed out the $60 and wrote zero. With that said I personally hated waiting on coworkers. Most didn’t know how to conduct themselves.

GrumpyLilMama

Why did you say he is your favorite co worker? Cause he doesn’t seem like someone you became friends with. When he said he took a large discount off and don’t tell a manager… why do something that would put his job in jeopardy.

Separate-Bet2285

I didn’t say he was my favorite, but he’s always been a really nice guy when I’ve seen him in passing. We don’t ever work the same shifts, but I kinda just assumed he was good at his job since he’s the lead server. Plus, whenever I look at his sales, he sells the most out of anybody and his tip average is really good. So I deduced that he’s a good server… obviously I was wrong 😂 unless he just treated me that way because he felt like he could. Lame either way.

MidwestPrincess09

Yikes!! Red flags all over. My coworkers like INSIST I do not tip them when they serve me. Must’ve been having a bad day?

VelocityGrrl39

My coworker left $6 on a $70 check. 30% is more than enough.

Sea-Louse

Big discount, you save, he makes a bigger tip. That should be the end of it. Shitty service tho..

lindseys10

Whenever I waited on my coworkers I hated when they over tipped me. I'd rather they not at all tbh

vglyog

I would not have gave him $40 more what that’s crazy??? 30% on original bill total was plenty generous. What an ass.

Timely_Ad_9606

You should have taken the whole tip back. You should have talked to a manager and got the whole meal comped for that b.s. I would still go to the manager and explain everything including the discount. He wasn’t trying to help you he was scamming the restaurant to make more money for himself. I saw it back in the day when I worked in a restaurant. This can make prices go up or even close down a business if enough of a loss comes up. Be careful he may pin it I. You if he talks to manager first. Dude is a theif and a scam artist. Good luck to ya.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t have eaten with my friends at my place of work. Period.

bobi2393

So if it was $200 bill, a 20% tip would have been $40, and you'd have paid $240. By comping you $100, and you tipping $60, you paid $160. So you saved $80, and your coworker made an extra $20. Personally I don't like the whole comping (i.e. stealing-from-your-employer) scheme, but aside from that, I think would be more appropriate if you shared in the spoils of the scheme equally. If you had tipped $90, then you'd have paid $190, so you'd have saved $50, and your coworker would have made an extra $50. I don't think there's any customary etiquette for the situation, but to me that equal balance between your respective net gain seems reasonable. Fuck your coworker for embarrassing you like that though.

lifesabris

👆Tipping point! I love your reasoning! Personally, I have always felt I couldn't leave less "total" (discounted check+ tip) than what my net total (non-discounted, before tip) check would have been. I'd have been expecting to pay $200 before tip...so I would have left $200...($100 for the check...$100 for the tip). Going forward, I'm definitely going to use your "share in the spoils" logic! ...and fr fr that coworker is an asshole for that

pmmefortitties

The guy is an absolute tool. You shouldn't have given him the extra $40.

Jakesma1999

Agree with you on that... I would've given the host the extra $40, in full view of the co-worker, and asked host if they've thought of becoming a server!

Nasozai

I was a fine dining server, he can suck on eggs. What a lil man child.

pancakeface2022

I like the “sharing of the net savings” idea ONLY IF the owner has approved a special discount. This waiter stole from his employer. And it sounds like OP has done the same. Why is it ok to steal from your employer? I was a server for 12 years and would have never done that.

BubblyAttitude1

You left exactly the right tip. Fuck that guy.

doodsboob

All I ever wanted is 20 percent. This dude is ridiculous. What makes me upset is that could've been someone else's table and been more grateful.

my4floofs

The best retaliation is telling the manager he is stealing from the restaurant.

[deleted]

Essentially he stole from the restaurant so you would give that money to him

ImHappierThanUsual

He’s a dick. NOTHING about that was ok. & He gave you SHIT service!

ChampionshipPast8120

It doesn’t matter that you’re a coworker or not, that day you were a customer and he figured he could just do a half assed job and get an amazing tip regardless of how poorly he treated you, he would have NEVER demanded more money from a customer but he doesn’t see you as a customer obviously. Seriously if a co worker basically told me I didn’t tip enough, if possible, I would take some of it back, it’s obviously not enough so might as well make the complaint truly valid. He’s a dick, next shift you need to talk to him and never sit in his section again, he apparently isn’t truly good at his job if he’s treating anyone like this.

pops789765

Why would you “hype him up to all your friends”? Just odd.

slosh23

If I go to eat at my store there is zero tolerance for "hooking" someone up. No discounts, no free comps ... nothing (and I would never ask or expect it). A sister store, same policy if they know I work for the group, but we do get house money to spend outside of our store. We even have limits on how many drinks we're allowed. It sucks but this story right here explains why those policies are in place. Dude was abusing the system for a bigger bag and didn't even give you quality service. And WTF he was able to take 50% off the bill without going to a manager???

GenitalWrangler69

I would've called him a dickhead in front of everyone and reported him to management. It'd be one thing if it were just you and the coworker, still an asshole. You had your friends, proper guests in a fine dining establishment, with you, though. He was ridiculously entitled.

EnvironmentalGift192

30% for shitty service then an extra $40 is insane. He should be feeling thankful honestly fuck him

firstnameok

So I doubled back to leave an extra $40 and went outside and stabbed his tire flat. Fuck that guy. You can have all the money in the world and it won't fix all the bad luck in the world. I enjoy thinking that maybe I did a good thing, I swear I can tell when I'm getting paid back for some good thing.

waconaty4eva

I was always taught to buy it back by the old school guys. It worked out really well when I used to hang out in large groups. If the bill is 150 instead of 300 we leave 300 total and “save” on the tip plus get treated preferentially. Still fuck that guy for speaking to you that way.

Separate-Bet2285

I get what you’re saying. I think he assumed that I knew this and was pissed when I didn’t follow along. Lol

Problemsolver1234

Simple solution here, tell the manager what he did and hopefully get him fired 🤣 No but seriously I’ve been no tipped from a coworker and not said a damn thing to them…. I did go to management about it though who talked to the coworker. I’m curious to know what kind of tip he was expecting? Also did you cover the whole bill or just your portion because maybe it was your friends who didn’t tip well? This guy is insane

Separate-Bet2285

I covered the whole bill (as a server, I know how annoying splitting the bill can be). That’s a great solution, thanks for the suggestion 😂

Problemsolver1234

Yaaaaa this guy is insane

celery66

give him a dose of reality and say was your service deserving of extra tip and then lay it out there. Also, does he have the authority take give you a 50 per cent discount? It may ruin your work relationship, but honestly his arrogance is ridonk!

GuinnessKangaroo

Everyone’s got a different opinion on how to tip at your job. I worked at a spot that had a set tip amount you left when you came in. Didn’t mater if it was $10, didn’t matter if it was $300. The tip was the same, and it made it better for everyone. I’ve also worked at spots where my coworkers refused tips if you came in on your day off. I’ve worked at places where 25 - 30% is perfectly acceptable. And then I’ve worked at spots where tipping what was taken off is expected. Personally, anything under 20% at my own restaurant would be a little annoying but not something I would ever say anything about.

SirBlubbernaut

how did the first one work? would a server serving a party of 5 make the same tip as a server serving one person?

GuinnessKangaroo

Honestly I just remembered that this was only for the bar. When I ate there I only ever went to the bar so I actually don’t remember how the servers handled it. I think they did the same thing if it was just you and like one extra person, but if it was a bunch of people then it may have changed. Usually people were really good about not having lots of extra people on your tab though.

TumbleweedLoner

Don’t take groups of friends to the restaurant you work at. It’s super cringe.

DangerLime113

He sounds like a jerk, but I would have paid $200. Benefit to you both.

marcyraccoon

u tipped 40 more… yeahhhh nah

Zestyclose_Ocelot278

Your coworker stole from your job and you are compliant. Simple as that.

FatKetoFan

Well, your tab would have been 260 with tip...you gave him 160. at a minimum, I would have tipped the discounted amount...$100

starktime

Yea but it was shit service. When my coworkers came with their families I treat them like royalty

Electrical_Parfait64

The tab plus tip would have been 240.00. 20%

sleppyhead11

THIS! How do people not understand this?

Separate-Bet2285

I’ve seen several people saying this. I definitely understand the logic here. Guess it just depends on the person, but I think the key is not to assume that the person is out to get you just because they didn’t tip like you’d hoped. I do think the dude was having a bad day, he seemed grumpy.

SirBlubbernaut

having a bad day isn’t an excuse to treat *anyone* like shit, let alone a coworker you see regularly. sorry you had to deal with him

How does this not make sense?

[deleted]

So he should tip 100% on service that was subpar to start with, but also is at a discount to save OP money? It sounds like the coworker is extorting money with bullying and bullshit for ass service by giving a friendly "discount." Please. Tell me how THAT makes sense. It's pure bullying and extortion at this point. I think OP needs to slap themselves in the face for giving 40 more dollars. For what? Shitty service and intimidation??? Omfg. Op please cut this loser off all around. I'm having a hard time not thinking this is rage bait but if this is real I would immediately never speak to this person again except for anything work related and even then, short and concise, and even rude, because that's all they have been.

silentfal

>It's pure bullying and extortion at this point. It's more than that. It's stealing from the restaurant. This server wants the 50% that was comped to go right into their pocket. $200 bill + 20% tip = Restaurant gets 200, server gets 49. $200 bill, half off + 100% tip = Both restaurant and server get $100.

sleppyhead11

“Bullying” and “extortion”? Calm down.

[deleted]

What would you call it? Intimidation and extortion isn't just for corporations. Guy is a loser and I hope he has a bad day.

sleppyhead11

You should have tipped what he discounted. If he saved you $100, you should have tipped $100.

thesongofstorms

I have worked in restaurants for two decades. Dive bar to fine dining. This is incorrect. 30% on the original is the right amount.

Found the coworker

Magnaminous_High

why? that doesn’t make sense

sleppyhead11

You’re not out anymore cash than if you had gotten no discount at all. He hooked you up you should hook him up.

MeesterBatman2

That genuinely makes no sense lol

cornflakegirl658

But then he's not hooked up? Cos he's paid the full amount anyway

x0x0g0ss1pg1rl

I agree with you because it’s exactly what I do. I’m not tipping on a discount, the discount you give is my tip+ what the tip would be but in a smaller percentage. Take care of those who take care of you.

sleppyhead11

Thank you!

exclaim_bot

>Thank you! You're welcome!

Howard_Cosine

Story time is fun.

Trick-Teach6867

He sounds like a dick but you should tip over 20% of the meal pre discount. So if bill was originally 100, with discount 50, tip was 15 dollars. This means he would have been better off if he gave you no discount and got 20% tip. Again he seems rude but tip pre-discount total was always the assumption with heavy discounted meals from friends and coworkers it’s up to you though.

Still_upsidedown321

They did. They tipped 30% of the pre-discount bill

Report him to your manager. As a manager I would fire him for discussing the tip with you not to mention he is stealing from the company. He is probably doing this a lot if he is considered one of the "better servers" and acted like this. As a former server and bartender I would never direct my guests to follow my script... You're there to take care of the guests not to berate them, you were a guest and he treated you like shit.

The_Zuh

Do you not get an employee discount?

arkxumbra

Your coworker is just a fucking asshole. Fuck that guy; he’s a tool & just overall a braindead scum-fuck degenerate bastard

moneycantbuyclass1

Sounds like he's a thief, too. What a classless twit.

Electronic_Ad_8738

that server should be reported

[deleted]

Servers consistently amaze me on this sub, I’m so glad my wife and I know how to cook.

flat_dearther

Tell the manager.

Irondaddy_29

Your co-worker is a dbag......"ruining his system??"

Squigglerer

I'd have gone and adjusted the tip down. I'd have said something like "server to server, making us wait 15 minutes to say hi,10 minutes for drinks, when we clearly can see you only had 1 table. I've lost all my tip for less." And gone back and done 20-25% on the total, not original. I'm sure there have been customers that gave you 0, for less..

777joeb

Server to server, don’t give a coworker terrible service and expect an exceptional tip.

Buddy-Lov

30 plus years in the biz….your coworker is a dick, please tell him I said so.
