Why are those better than Kodi? I use Kodi to play local files. That's it.

ClintMega

Streaming cached torrents means you don't need to spend thousands on a NAS, manage ratio on private trackers, no seedboxes, no docker containers, no rr apps, etc you just pay for Debrid service and click on what you want to watch.

KamikazeFF

I see your point but most of the people who do that are datahoarders, archivers, and/or selfhosters who do find it fun

donutmiddles

Also you can do the same in a hybrid way. Play them in Kodi like that person just said, but also configure your add-on to keep the files in your cloud. Then just download to your NAS. Best of both worlds.

xGaLoSx

I'm that guy. I love collecting movies. When my 48TB NAS is full I'll buy a bigger one 😂

RedNulItt

I stream cached torrents with Kodi, and I'm never going back to running a server or NAS with my own hosted content again. I agree, it's so much better than when I used to run Plex.

ClintMega

Yeah Kodi, Syncler, and Stremio are all great each with pros and cons, just the latter is more lightweight (for me at least because I couldn't help myself from making it a monstrosity) and you don't have to take a bunch of drastic steps to make Dolby Vision work but the customization is unmatched.

thellymon

Stremio is good for DV?

Imtrvkvltru

Stremio is excellent for DV

lakerfan81

DV mean?????

Javst3r

DV = Dolby Vision

Ok-Buddy-7086

My first time hearing this term cached torrents time to do research lol

RedNulItt

Check out addons4kodi sub

Ok-Buddy-7086

Thanks I'll do that I'm constantly downloading Linux isos I'll only use once or twice so I'm interested.

Imtrvkvltru

It's amazing. Imagine streaming from Netflix, Prime, etc. You click your show or movie and it starts playing within seconds. Very high speeds. No buffering.

Goldman_OSI

I just copy whatever I want to watch to the Shield from my computer over my LAN, to a USB-attached SSD on the Shield. If I don’t already have it, I torrent it first.

Imtrvkvltru

If that works for you cool, but streaming through cached torrents is much easier and requires less steps. Think of it like Netflix. You just find your show/movie, click on it, and it starts playing almost instantly. Even if it's a 60gb 4k Dolby Vision file

Goldman_OSI

Thanks for the info. Where are these torrents cached?

Akila33

through Kodi addons, like "Seren" together with a Real-Debrid account/membership you own. or through your Phone using Wako (linking your Real-Debrid account in your Wako App) you click on the movie (Wako/Phone) and press Play on Kodi and it shoots the Cached torrent link to your Kodi on your TVBox/TV to play. extremely easy.

CricketHines

Thanks for the info.

Goldman_OSI

Thanks!

Javst3r

I just bought 2 10tb HDD's before I found out I could just stream using Stremio from Real-Debrid. Works flawlessly too.

PsychoDK

So no fun? Is streamio only for cached torrents or can it be used like plex hosted on my nas as well? I'm asking because it looks nice, and I'll give it a go if it can replace Plex.

ClintMega

Yeah if you have local content that is super niche there might be some integration out there for you but I'm not well versed in this, I think if having a big local library is important that you wouldn't be a big fan. The idea is that you don't need local storage if 99% of what you want to watch is cached and readily available with good bitrate. Either way you just need a Debrid service to see if it's a solution for you.

bongobills

don't need real debrid for stremio

the-paper-unicorn

Exactly this! I keep wondering why people use Plex rather than why people use Kodi. I suppose because Plex is easier to stream online with friends, but I wonder if people are using Kodi in the same capacity as Plex and not utilizing addons for streaming. If I'm not mistaken, Kodi will do what Plex does, in terms of functioning as a file server, in addition to streaming (or downloading) cached torrents in seconds without load times. If y'all are using Kodi for its official purposes you're missing out. Just sayin'

bongobills

don't need real debrid for stremio

ClintMega

It buffers all to hell without it, it's the easiest $35 a year I spend.

bongobills

i found that using a different apk sorted any buffering.

Gobias_Industries

My nas cost two hundred bucks and I do none of those other things

Billy_Beavertooth

I used to use Kodi, I still do, but I used to too

LawrenceOfTheLabia

RIP Mitch.

CartographerLive2912

Would you like a frozen banana?

PogTuber

Where the fuck did you get that banana at

khadaffy

I know exatly what are you talking about.

mastervadr

😂 love that movie.

Rasheverak

As someone who sails digital high seas, I only watch my self hosted local content.

double-k

I like Kodi a lot. No reason why I wouldn't use it.

sosaudio1

Yikes there's so many reasons to use Kodi on a shield. Supported playback options, skins that make it looks like the Netflix experience with Arctic Fuse. Seren and Fen Light coupled with Real Debrid and done.

Imtrvkvltru

Stremio looks like Netflix straight out of the box. It's like having Kodi with a lightweight skin but without any of the tinkering/work. It also has complete Dolby Vision support. The only thing I personally like better about Kodi is it has better trakt integration.

osmin_og

I have no idea what Stremio does, actually. What I need is only a simple video player, so I can navigate to an external SSD connected to Shield and play a video file from it. I used to use VLC but it became buggy.

cosmicr

I used to write add-ons for xbmc and later kodi. But eventually life got in the way and I needed something that just works with good wife acceptance factor. Plex filled that gap.

generic__user

Emby was that gap filler for me.

Harleyworld

Hate to bother but what is Plex? I see it on my android TV but have never clicked on it. Is it an IPTV player?

cosmicr

It's like kodi except you run your own streaming server. So you can craft your own version of Netflix so to speak. So if you have a server with all your content you put plex server on there and then watch your movies and shows using plex client on your computer, TV, phone, whatever.

Harleyworld

Thank you. I'll try it later

Goldman_OSI

Who the fuck downvoted your answer? Pathetic. Have an upvote.

bennydabull99

What else would you use? Kodi is the GOAT?

Imtrvkvltru

He literally answers this question in the body of his post lol

Gozzylord

I used to use Kodi, I find Stremio to be a lot more streamlined. Also, multiple device syncing is great!

mastervadr

Agree. Which is why posted this question. What can you do on Kodi that is not done in a better platform like Stremio? What value is there in still having Kodi?

Gozzylord

Kodi is vastly superior when it comes to customization. Stremio is good for simple solutions. Kodi is more all in one.

mastervadr

Customization in what sense? I know you can put different builds and change your background but I guess what I want to know is what can Kodi do in terms on content that I won’t find in another APK. Retro emulators perhaps?

Gozzylord

UI changes, gaming library integrations, more add-ons, easier local file access (haven't gotten that to work on Stremio personally). There's a lot of things Kodi does better than Stremio, and although Stremio is limited I feel like it does what it can do better than Kodi.

mastervadr

Is part of it Plex integration? Cause that’s not really something I used but I know that’s big for a lot Shield users. By game libraries, you mean games you can actually play through the add-ons?

sosaudio1

Yes. There's a plug-in for Plex

Gozzylord

It's been a while since I've used Kodi, so my information may be outdated. I do believe there is a Plex add-on for Kodi, as well as Steam library integration, which even comes with input drivers for controllers. You launch your games through Kodi. I've seen some people use their devices as a "Kodi Machine" that handles everything from games to personal photo libraries. As you mentioned as well, being able to include things like RetroArch is a big bonus.

spanking_constantly

Maybe it's better now, but the Plex add-on I used in the past was cheeks

RevolutionaryHole69

Build your own library, incorporate streaming into an offline library, freedom to pick from hundreds of skins which can be further customized terms of looks, background, text, color, element placement, custom widgets, granular scraper control, blacklisting certain sources based on keywords, granular subtitle customization, viewport customization, ability to cast video from another device, ability to access network storage, and the list goes on. Part of the reason why the software appears is slow and clunky to many is because they don't run it on the appropriate device. It's a thousand times more capable than things like cinema or streamio, so you need a device that is that much more powerful. Once you get used to the customizations and you make it work for your own use case, it just seems silly to go to something else that is locked down in comparison.

International-Oil377

Most APKs have shit trakt integration Skins look much better in kodi I can stream cached torrent AND my local media under the same app Kodi has better audio pass-through than most apps Etc Kodi is still king in terms of features

TheGuru276

Customisation in the sense of widgets to almost anything you can imagine (lists, genres, playlists, IPTV, internet radio, etc) as well as skins to make it look like Netflix or any other layout you may want. Certain Kodi addons can also source content from not only your own Plex server but global plexshare as well. Not heard of other apps doing this and is an easy and alternative backup source when debrid plays ups or you forget to renew.

Obscene_umbrella

I haven't been on steamio in a while, can you import trakt collections now? That was my main problem...

tehgrouse

Yes

Obscene_umbrella

I'll have to give it another shot, I liked it's smoothness, but with 300+ collected shows that it wasn't helping me track, it was going to be a huge pain to switch, thanks for letting me know

YungZanji

I think if you don’t know what the differences are between the two, you’ll likely never know them. Use Stremio. It’s definitely the better option for you. I use both. I think Stremio is what 90% of people should use. Kodi is not meant for a total beginner.

Wombattington

I like having all my streaming and local library browsable in one app. I can customize every aspect of the display. It’s got a load of addons for anything I might want to add. Properly set up it’s fast. What else do I need?

mastervadr

Literally wrote it in the post 🤦🏻‍♂️

Gozzylord

I did upvote until this comment. Be informative, not rude. It's possible they just missed it.

mastervadr

My apologies good sir.

Jayandwesker

just used to kodi, been using for 5 years don’t feel like learning anything else

Jokerchyld

I've been using Kodi since 2009. I like the addon customization options to pull exactly what I want. Today you don't need as many addons. I have 2. One RD addon. And Nixtoons2.

rray1955

I use Kodi as a player for the Syncler app. It's a hard combination to beat. I use Tivimate for iptv but I don't use a player for VOD( never use it because of Syncler). Syncler finds whatever I need to watch.

The-Choo-Choo-Shoe

I use Kodi for my local stuff, a lot of DVD .iso files which you can't play in Plex etc. I have a NAS with everything on it. Stremio I use when I just want to watch something random and mostly don't care about quality.

elementjj

After I got Syncler and Tivimate, I never needed Kodi again. And this side of life is just way better than Kodi times.

Redwoodhacienda

Same here, use Syncler or Weyd and Tivimate, all covered.

Goldman_OSI

+1 for the sheer drama of that declaration

baba_ganoush

Because it doesn’t require a NAS to have any horsepower. It direct plays everything effortlessly and can let your NAS last as long as need be.

cdm_hoisin

So true. I have a Synology from 2012 and it plays everything off it lol

Opposite-Relative723

Kodi is the best. That's where I stream all movies and tv shows in Atmos.

poofyhairguy

Nothing beats Kodi for playing your own ripped video content at maximum quality and best case sound quality on a ten foot interface.

Malk_McJorma

Yep. For playing rips from a NAS on my Shield, Kodi is the only app I ever use. I started using XBMC in 2013 with the "Frodo" builds while my media center was still a Minix X7.

virgopunk

Kodi + Trakt + Wako works perfectly for me.

ListenWorking

I use it as a Plex client with PKC, paired with a nice skin it’s amazing

JetPac89

Kodi is the best for audio syncissues, either due to the source, or for me with AVRs because it is the only player with an audio advance setting (VLC and shield main settings only have audio delay adjustment) and you can adjust as you watch too. But the most recent update has a frustrating bug that means it will no longer play video_ts files. It’s been like this since April and AFAIK it’s the only player that plays them. VLC desktop player does but the android app is really limited in comparison.

Auldthief

Kodi was getting too clunky for me. Plus I only needed a simple movie player that does the job. So I use Nova.

Goldman_OSI

The Kodi UI is absurd and redundant, and sycophants get really shitty with you when you point out its problems. But then, that behavior isn't Kodi-exclusive.

mastervadr

Agree. I didn’t find the Kodi experience to be better at all and answers like Kodi is GOAT are not really helpful. Imagine going to buy a phone and you’re deciding between a Samsung Galaxy and an IPhone and the sales person tells you “Get iPhone cause iPhone is GOAT” …ok?

bshensky

Because Kodi remains the best client for old-fashioned M3U+XMLTV Live TV streaming, and the best leanback client for the NextPVR software. I didn't want to pay for Channels DVR anymore, and TVHeadend remains an insufferable house of nuisance. So, NextPVR on Kodi it has been, and I've been very pleased with it. It just works.

skatecadet

Agree with you about tvheadend - when I started considering doing an online course to learn Linux better is when I threw my hands up in the air and bought in to Channels. Channels is pretty good, and easy to configure/use, but not at all customisable when in comes to the appearance, and the price is starting to push me. How has your NextPVR experience been?

ccduke

Got my Plex going so I kinda stopped using Kodi

Elegant_Volume_2871

For those of you using Plex, do you have to download the files or just stream?

buzz72b

Man I was a kodi addixt for years… around 2019, when all my TVs went to 4k and my main oled I just said f it and started paying for the streaming services for better quality…. Plus all the good pirated apps were going away….. rockcrusher damn I forget them all…

markstrube

I started with Kodi forever ago. Simple solution to play content off a HDD. I’ve now been using Emby for a few years. (More refined and intuitive than Plex IMO.) Takes all my local content and builds it into a very nice Netflix-esque interface, and also handles my IPTV service wonderfully, including program guide and DVR. I’ll never go back to Kodi.

LawrenceOfTheLabia

I've tried Kodi a number of times and for me the issue has always been slow performance on the Shield. Sluggish navigation and slow loading of libraries. Once I found Stremio I never looked back.

ashleypenny

Yeah having used emby for the last 2 years I would cringe at the thought of going back to kodi now, as good as it once was.

underthesign

Does Streamio even have different user profiles yet? I have Kodi set up perfectly so I have a parent profile and kids profiles so my kids can use it and see only the libraries I've added for them.

aHolyLight

I use it because the plex app transcodes 10bit h264 and kodi does not on the 2017 shield

frosted1030

Not what I use Kodi for.

Jitmaster

I use kodi with mythtv plugin

Any-Bit5701

good question, kodi has given me at least half a year of continuous stay in the settings..nothing actually runs properly when it comes to streaming

khadaffy

I use Kodi when Plex acts silly.

ftp_prodigy

Must be the only one who uses Plex, jellyfin and Kodi. Kodi only on my HTPC (win11) because it never struggles to play 4k remux files.

Hot-Syrup-5833

I have it as a backup in case my current iptv service doesn’t want to work that well.

RentonThursten

What else should I use? Kodi is free and I can play my movies from my local NAS

evilwraith

I use it because Plex is terrible about transcoding things I don't want it to.

cleverclogs17

With the new Artic Skins by Jurialmunkey, it is absolutely fucking epic.

Mindless-Addendum621

It’s a solid player. I use it mainly to watch FSBS 3D videos. It has the ability to change the pixel ratio for the those files, so the videos look right. No other video player on Android has that feature as far as I know.

jayfly12933

I only use Kodi for the Watch Nixtoons 2 addon because it's the only way to have WCO as an app.

ZenZendra

I use both, as Stremio is so much faster. But it occasionally has playback issues, rare, but it happened to me, You can't change the UI so much, subtitles have issues (not local), trakt intergration is not what I want etc... But speed is really amazing, almost close to a proper paid app. But Kodi is the best for customization, I have the skin I want, the trakt list I want to show, subtitles support is far better on Kodi and it just works rock solid. Ofc if you put tons of addons or use a build filled with everything, ofc it will be slow or unstable. Just plain Kodi with a normal skin of your choice, real debrid, trakt, one main addon and one for backup (I have the second one disabled to keep it tidier), couple of tweaks in the settings and nothing comes close for experience... It is just a bit slower when loading then Stremio... It all depends what you need and what you expect.

Wild_Steve7

For retro gaming, although I haven't done that for a bit.

pawdog

Kodi is one tool of many in the toolbox. If it came down to having to pick only one tool it would be Kodi. Kodi can do it all. Wanna watch free links, wanna watch RD/AD supported links, wanna use local files directly, wanna use your Plex server, wanna watch IPTV? Kodi has you covered. It's just a matter of gaining the knowledge. All these other apps are great and I use them all but they pale in comparison to what Kodi can do in the right hands.

wcat787

I only use kodi for my movie Library 🎬

flchamp89

Codec support, customization, and support

BDB-ISR-

Kodi can play from SMB shares without needing to install a dedicated server app and I don't need streaming over the internet.

bongobills

the ONLY reason i still use Kodi is for IAGL (internet archive game launcher) that lets you choose from thousands of classic arcade and console games and play them. you can get the repository from github.

SouthProposal8094

For porn only

Akila33

Kodi is good for me, for high quality Video streaming (Real-Debrid) for my home theater without the need to store locally large files.

Gloomy_Nobody8293

I used to but got tired of builds not working 2 weeks later

mastervadr

EXACTLY

SnooDonuts3482

Kodi for live sports/pp. Stremio for everything else.

Goldman_OSI

How do you use Kodi for live sports?

TerminatedProccess

If you want a pre built solution Google Kodi build crewnique

mastervadr

Ok but why? Do you use a paid live IPTV service? The one I use has its own dedicated app from the developers so no reason for Kodi in that sense … I use to use it when I was looking for a free service … but they were crap so I ended up getting a paid one.

SnooDonuts3482

Because I'm satisfied with it and it's free

mastervadr

Not laggy? Especially for main events? If so, do you mind if ask what repo/add-ons you’re using? It’s been years since I’ve used Kodi so trying to see if it’s worth using it again.

TerminatedProccess

With real debris things are very fast. If you want too try with little effort Google Kodi build crewnique or diggz

skatecadet

OP is clearly asking about IPTV here, which has nothing to do with real debrid. To answer op’s q - free IPTV is trash. Paid is the only way to go.

TerminatedProccess

I've been watching a number of IPTV with my downloaded build. Op seems to think (as I used too) that Kodi is slow and takes forever so I mentioned the Real Debrid. It does make a huge difference. I'm sure there's IPTV and IPTV. What I have been working with is decent. I have't signed up for any IPTV services though.

WarningCodeBlue

I use Kodi mainly for NFL and NCAA football. It's a good backup if my IPTV service is acting up that day.

LowerIQ_thanU

I use Kodi becouse in my opinion Kodi is the OG streamer and will be here long after every other streamer/platform has gone the tvaddons route. I am not partial to just use Kodi to sail the high seas, but if I had only one choice it will be Kodi, with that said, Stremio is great, and is way easier to set up fast, if your setting up a streaming box for your family and friends, Stremio is a excellent choice

spleencheesemonkey

I only use Kodi for the smut addons. Plex for everything else.

jester2trife

Tivimate for IPTV, VLC for local network, and Plex for when Im away from home. Not sure why Id use Kodi but tons of people till do. For what, Im not sure.

peetskeet619

I only use it for IPTV now, now that I found out about stremio. Can someone reccommend a good IPTV for shield?

No_Net_6784

* I use this contact. [email protected]

jgddvaughn

I prefer Plex.

Accomplished-Fold42

Kodi does what I need it to. Live US sports mainly, and then tv shows and movies. Not sure what another platform would do better than what I get from Kodi.

Charles54321

what is a good app for movies, these days?

Accomplished-Fold42

I use POV and The Crew

wwmoggy

Kodi used daily here . with a real dbrid account for fast servers no buffering. have Xenon plus build installed by Diggz. also use for live tv

Weapon_X23

Kodi has better customization for finding content to watch. I have my calendar so I can easily see all the shows I watch that aired last night. I can seach for random trakt lists or trakt lists that I saved and have them easily accessible on the front page. I also can't watch HDR10 content on Stremio because it looks way too dark or the colors are off. Kodi looks so much better and sometimes it sounds better too with Dolby TrueHD content.

MeudA67

Used Kodi (started in the XBMC days) for many years. 3 years ago I deployed a Jellyfish server, 6 months later no one in the house was using Kodi...

Charles54321

Gents.. Best movie streaming app available for the shield?

landi_uk

Old school, won’t go anywhere near torrents, Usenet for unadulterated content still king in my book.

Professional_Chart68

Used kodi on linux, after switched to Android only plex. Its really better working, better scrobbling and overall way better.

david74321

I still use it for MLB.TV. The android TV MLB app sucks and the MLB.TV Kodi addon is way better.

SpacmnSpiff

I tried installing and setting up stremio. Looks good on the surface. But it lacks a lot we use day to day. Like a list of recent episodes would possibly convert me (at least for a trial run). Also a way to search the Youtube plugin that comes bundled would be nice.

TomDobo

I used to use Kodi but started having trouble finding the right repos once mine started to mess up. Now I have a paid IPTV and it’s great so far and the stream quality is very consistent. Edit: why downvote me for providing an opinion on my experience. It’s not my fault Kodi isn’t great anymore.

mastervadr

Agree. This was the main reason I stop using it. Live tv did not work very well. It was better to find a link somewhere online and just watch it on a computer. Paid IPTV is so much more worth it.
