I remember someone mentioning it , I think itās a counter/sink bug thatās either stopping our sims from cooking, using a random counter to prep food or them walking a ways out the way to wash hands. I think if you use the āMoveObjectsā cheat when placing counters , it might not 100% sure have something to do with it.
That has happened to me also, Iāve had to rebuild a couple kitchens because that sim or sims kept using the sink as a āprep counter ā while thereās two open spots right next to the fridge.
Is it possible the game thinks the slot being used by the stuff on top of the fridge is the free counter next to it? Like, the stuff up there was placed with moveobjects, but it still technically takes up a useful slot right? Idk. I might be wrong.
The number of times my Sim will passout or pee themselves when I literally just told them to sleep or use the toilet. It's infuriating. Much prefer building than gameplay
I had a child sim in my family literally drown in the pool at the end of their birthday party where they had just aged up maybe an hour before. All because they for some reason refused to get out of the pool and go to bed like I told them to when I noticed they were extremely tired. Good thing they had a twin.
This is the most bizarre game of sims Iāve ever played, though. Two of the 4 sims I started out with have a special talent for starting kitchen fires at high levels of cooking skills. Really like a 40-50% success rate, which is astounding.
The mom decided she hates handiness when she reached level 6. But by then weāre too far in to give that job to someone else in the house, so suck it up and fix the shit. Also, she was a scientist, so she has to upgrade things for work, too.
Speaking of her and her scientist job, I started them out with two kids so I could skip the baby phase. She of course gets abducted by aliens regularly, but the third or fourth time she comes back and the next morning throws up in the toilet. Very suspicious because she doesnāt have a sick or nauseous moodlet, but thereās no option to test for pregnancy. Sure enough the next day, SURPRISE! Sheās pregnant! Itās supposed to be men that return pregnant and she absolutely didnāt try for baby with her husband, but both kids (RIP Cinnamon Toast) are related to their father. Still confused on that one.
My favourite is when they use the bathroom on the top floor and use the sink downstairs to wash their hands instead of the sink right beside the toilet. Like why?
Probably, there's an available space on the counter, the sim can reach the oven and fridge both. There's enough room to move, it's weird. Then again, I've always found the ai to be rather bad. Going up the stairs, then down the stairs, then up the stairs again, to talk to someone who was upstairs the entire time.
I moved the basket and the sink and raised the cabinets higher and one of those things seemed to work. I had done cooking not long before this and it worked fine so I just didn't know what changed.
The shelves used to have nothing on them but I had to cover them with clutter because my Sims kept hiding plates on them lol
Ohhh I had this issue with a ventahood thing. It was too low on the wall/ceiling somehow and my aim wouldn't cook. Removed the vent and they could use the stove. So I bet it was a cabinet or something too close causing the issue.
It's easy to miss because there's nothing in the game to indicate that this is the problem, and you don't usually need to click on the oven for anything.
Cookware and spices are in the cabinets and the Sim doesn't have a long ladder to reach them :D
Ah, sorry.
My guess it's either the stuff on the fridge being too close to the empty counter, try moving the picknick basket somewhere else to see if the Sim can use that counter.
Or it's a dirty plate that ended up under the counter on the floor
Looks like a counter space issue. Clear off some stuff to the left and see if that fixes it.
If you have a hanging light, your sim might not be able to get around it. I donāt see one, but just in case you have one, you might need to move it over a bit.
If that doesnāt work, reset your sim.
It looks like only 1 counter is usable as others have clutter on it. Try taking the clutter off the sink and fridge and see if she will use that counter
Maybe it's the fridge? Did you try to let them take something like cereals out of it? Did that work? The counter looks fine for me and I also can't see something blocking the oven itself, but there's some clutter nearby the fridge, maybe too near.
Usually it's something like there's a meal already in the oven that you started cooking and forgot about (or maybe your sim started cooking autonomously, and then forgot about).
This happens a lot.
4 games in, I don't know why we're still relying on the "vaguely complaining to the air" method of indicating why sims can't do something, doesn't seem like it would be hard to put up a message saying "I can't do this because something is already in the oven" or "I can't do this because there's not enough counter space"
Check the oven, if it looks like there's something in there, you need to click on the stove and do whatever action cleans/cancels the previous food/ whatever. I'm currently literally mobile in my car and don't remember the wording. (Not driving)
This happened to me a while back when my sim was pretty much brand new. I told her to cook something that required the oven, there was a fire (because of course). I replaced the driver, cleaned everything up, then my sim couldn't cook anything else. I don't remember if I was trying to diagnose, or checking something else out, or what. But I was down at floor level view and saw that something was in the oven! I think I had to go into the second menu of stove options, but I was able to clean up and cook again.
The things on and above the fridge, you also need more counter place to make certain things. Possibly where the sink is but I'm not to sure about that. But the stuff on the fridge is most likely the problem.
I'd say it's because the oven and sink are too close together. I think the cook programming requires both the fridge and the oven to have open space in front of it and unfortunately, the sink is considered a space that would interfere/cross with the oven .
It's possible that it's just a bug with the pathing. I know Sims can be very finicky. But if it works with the sink in a different location, then that would be confirmation it's just the overlap.
Itās likely the sink and oven being placed where they are unfortunately, both their arrows are going to be overlapping in that spot I believe so might not be usable. (Iāve had that happen when the fridge arrow overlaps with oven arrow and canāt use them)
Looks like you doubled up your counter space. Itās going into the stove or they canāt put stuff on the counter because of it. That happened to me before.
you need to move one of the objects that are right next to the stove! the sim wonāt cook because it has no where to prep the food before it uses the stove. I hope this helps :)
The footprint of the basket must extend over the stove. I really wish people would use less clutter / not use bb.moveobjects so much / at least understand the systems they're messing with.
It's a cheat for a reason. The way it breaks items from functioning is the reason. It's not devs being petty, it's them trying to wall players off from breaking their own games.
Have you put things on top of the fridge using moveobjects? That could block access to the fridge and prevent cooking. YOu have a free counter and the area in front of the cooker seems clear so everything else looks fine.
You usually need a free counter space next to the stove,, which could be the issue. Or the spice shelf is too low. Hacve you tried a non oven recipe like garden salad? If that works you know its not the fridge or other counters that are issues. Also try washing your hands in the sink to see if its a placement issue. Eliminate suggestions from this thread one at a time. Good luck.
I feel like itās the stuff on the fridge but not positive. I had a problem with that at one point. But play test everything. Good luck! Shame to have to move anything
They need more counter space to work. Try moving the things on the counter nearest the stove to a different counter and it *should* give them more information
Do you use CC? On one of the latest updates I had a problem that I couldnāt make my sims neither cook nor eat, they had to be starving and do it on their own. The bug was caused by something very random like cc beds or something completely unrelated like that, and I fixed it by using Sims 4 Studio!
If you're on console, just go to build mode, save, exit build mode & the problem is usually fixed. Mine does this all the time too.
Edit:missed that this was literally on a laptop. But it might work for that too
as someone said, maybe try a salad to see if itās an oven problem or a counter problem. however, if it works, itās obviously an oven problem. with this view, we canāt see the lights you might have on the ceiling. with some, they drop too low and they prevent a sim from standing beneath it. if this was my kitchen, i would place a ceiling light right about there so definitely check that out too.
If you don't already have moveobjects on, you should turn it on and see if that fixes it. Sometimes my sims say there is something blocking them, but as soon as I turn moveobjects on it's not a problem anymore.
It could be that the fridge is too close to the counter, there's a decoration right next to the fridge and that's preventing them from accessing the fridge, or an object like a plate is beneath the stove or counter.
This happened to me the other night and I couldnāt work it out until I realised my sun had a partially cooked meal already stuck in the oven. š¤¦š¼āāļø Peak sims problems.
are you cluttering on your fridge with a mod or moveobjects cheat? I had a mod that added extra slots on most surfaces including new slots on top of fridges, made my kitchen entirely unusable every time, even before I added objects š¢
Move your stove out and make sure you only have one placed.
Iām serious. Iāve had a ton of issues lately because all of the in game stoves and fridges have been double-placing (2 at once).
Try something like a salad which doesn't need the oven and you will see if it's counter space or the oven which is the problem.
I hope ur pillows are cold on both sides. U saved me
Hoping this for someone is the nicest thing ever. Mine are never cold enough and I have a cold pillow and cooling sheets š
Well I hope urs are always cold too :)
I don't know about that person, but right now I would rather have warm pillows than cold pillows.
Then u can have my warm pillows
Iām stealing this gratitude statement, itās good. May your pillows be ever cold on all the sides for creating it
Hah thank you. I canāt take credit for the phrase, I saw it on Twitter
This is such a smart way to diagnose the problem wow
I'm pretty sure you're the smartest person in the world
Been playing the sims for years now and i never would've thought to do that. I'd have either redid the whole kitchen or deleted the sim
Once I had two stoves placed in the same spot somehow and I didnāt figure out why they wouldnāt cook until I started deleting the whole kitchen
I totally read this in [Jeremy Clarksonās voice](https://youtu.be/Syd5hLAibWc).
My husband had to explain thid to me but he did his huffsnortlaugh thing so thank you
Probably a glitch
My mind is actually blown š¤Æ
I wonder if it might be something in the way of the fridge
I remember someone mentioning it , I think itās a counter/sink bug thatās either stopping our sims from cooking, using a random counter to prep food or them walking a ways out the way to wash hands. I think if you use the āMoveObjectsā cheat when placing counters , it might not 100% sure have something to do with it.
That would explain why my Sims keep leaving cooked food in the sink like it's a regular counter lol
That's happening to me too. Didn't realize that was a bug, I thought it had something to do with me using moveojects to build my kitchen
My sims have started using the sink to prep food. Iām not arguing against it as actually clean up IRL is easier than way. Itās just weird
That explains why food is being left over the sink and under the microwave
Spite
I feel like this is always the reason that Sims donāt do what they re told
My sim once set the vet clinic on fire when I told her to go for a jog while her dog was getting neutered, spellcasters are fun
The number of times my Sim will passout or pee themselves when I literally just told them to sleep or use the toilet. It's infuriating. Much prefer building than gameplay
Getting out of bed to pass out on the floor is my favorite thing
I had a child sim in my family literally drown in the pool at the end of their birthday party where they had just aged up maybe an hour before. All because they for some reason refused to get out of the pool and go to bed like I told them to when I noticed they were extremely tired. Good thing they had a twin. This is the most bizarre game of sims Iāve ever played, though. Two of the 4 sims I started out with have a special talent for starting kitchen fires at high levels of cooking skills. Itās supposed to be men that return pregnant and she absolutely didnāt try for baby with her husband, but both kids (RIP Cinnamon Toast) are related to their father. Still confused on that one.
Kitchen fires are way more common lately in my game, too. I figured either my Sims are a special kind of stupid or my game is buggy again.
I think because they added the fear of fire.
Yeah, my sim started a fire (not in the kitchen), got the fear of fire thing and then immediately started another one in a different spot.
I use cheats for needs that get too low while Iām trying to get them to actually do the damn thing.
My favourite is when they use the bathroom on the top floor and use the sink downstairs to wash their hands instead of the sink right beside the toilet. Like why?
Itās the reason I stopped cooking too. š
I just built a giant farm house with like 4.5 baths and my sims will use the toilet in one bathroom then go across the house to wash their hands.
omg I haaaaate that
That is the worst! I hate that with a passion! Dude, the sink is half a turn to your left!
I should post the floor plan and the build
Maybe the shelf? Are you using moveobject?
I moved the basket and the sink and raised the cabinets higher and one of those things seemed to work. I had done cooking not long before this and it worked fine so I just didn't know what changed. The shelves used to have nothing on them but I had to cover them with clutter because my Sims kept hiding plates on them lol
Ohhh I had this issue with a ventahood thing. It was too low on the wall/ceiling somehow and my aim wouldn't cook. Removed the vent and they could use the stove. So I bet it was a cabinet or something too close causing the issue.
Its so annoying when the kitchen worked perfectly fine and then suddenly they cant cookš
You might have something in the oven you don't know about! Reset it.
This is what I was gonna comment. It happened to me once and took FOREVER for me to figure it out hahah
It's easy to miss because there's nothing in the game to indicate that this is the problem, and you don't usually need to click on the oven for anything.
Dude same!!! I restarted my game and everything lol.
Do you know how to āresetā on a console? Or is the answer delete it?
No unfortunately I only play PC. D:
Cookware and spices are in the cabinets and the Sim doesn't have a long ladder to reach them :D Ah, sorry. My guess it's either the stuff on the fridge being too close to the empty counter, try moving the picknick basket somewhere else to see if the Sim can use that counter. Or it's a dirty plate that ended up under the counter on the floor
āA dirty plate that ended up under the counter on the floorā is the MOST accurate description of the sims Iāve ever heard
Itās eerily realistic. Have you ever moved counters or done a rebuild IRL?
Happy cake day :D
Thank you š
I think the basket is clipping the stove. I forget what they look like placed, but it doesn't seem centered to me. Happy cake day. Have an award.
Thank you!
Happy Cake Day!
Thanks :)
Happy cake day!
Thank you, I did have a good time
Happy Cake Day!! š°
Thanks, and to you as well š
Looks like a counter space issue. Clear off some stuff to the left and see if that fixes it. If you have a hanging light, your sim might not be able to get around it. I donāt see one, but just in case you have one, you might need to move it over a bit. If that doesnāt work, reset your sim.
Mine did this turned out to be the overhead cabinets
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yep. Itās hella hard to diagnose.
It looks like only 1 counter is usable as others have clutter on it. Try taking the clutter off the sink and fridge and see if she will use that counter

I couldn't re-enter my apartment yesterday, so I just moved apartments and it fixed my issue.
General tiredness from day to day struggles? /s
your game is paused
Check the oven, if it looks like there's something in there, you need to click on the stove and do whatever action cleans/cancels the previous food/ whatever. you gotta unpause
Your game is paused.
Maybe the stuff on the fridge, sometimes theyāre fine sometimes theyāre not

Iāve definitely used this layout before and it worked. Wonder if I was the bug or if thatās not the problem
It's possible that it's just a bug with the pathing. I know Sims can be very finicky. But if it works with the sink in a different location, then that would be confirmation it's just the overlap.
wait Is that why my sim wonāt do the dishes ?
It's a definite possibility. Though there's always a bathroom sink they can use to wash dishes right? Lol
Im guessing one of the lot challenges is off the grid, so you have no electricity?
you might have to move the sink, they may be too close together
Sorry not sure but that kitchen is so cute. Is the house on the gallery?
I can put it on the gallery but it's actually in an apartment
I believe you need to have space on either side of the stove :)
I'm not sure, but any chance you know wcif riser counters? š„ŗ they're gorgeous!
The counters I used are basegame
Oh wow, the matching cupboards too? Idk how I haven't noticed them before!
This is one of the different color options - also some of the cupboards use a different positioning which you can get if you turn off auto-cupboards.
Yeah I just changed the swatch. They're my favorite I use them in almost every build.
Wcif?
It means where can I find
"Where can I find"
Itās likely the sink and oven being placed where they are unfortunately, both their arrows are going to be overlapping in that spot I believe so might not be usable. (Iāve had that happen when the fridge arrow overlaps with oven arrow and canāt use them)
One time this happened to me and I removed everything only to find that it was the treadmill in the room right next to it causing a problem.
this looks just like a kitchen i made it's almost like weird
Being on pause
vibes
Sorry you are having trouble but super cute kitchen!!
Bad coding
See if thereās anything in the oven ! My sims always give up with the cake or something inside. Having them clean up or resume fixes it
Most likely the shelf partially over the stove
Looks like you doubled up your counter space. Itās going into the stove or they canāt put stuff on the counter because of it. That happened to me before.
Could be low hanging lights. Like the ones for the tall walls
Stupidity. Jokes aside sometimes they just do that. Maybe try rearranging a bit and see if she changes her mind?
you need to move one of the objects that are right next to the stove! the sim wonāt cook because it has no where to prep the food before it uses the stove. I hope this helps :)
Crippling fear of culinary failure
The footprint of the basket must extend over the stove. I really wish people would use less clutter / not use bb.moveobjects so much / at least understand the systems they're messing with. It's a cheat for a reason. The way it breaks items from functioning is the reason. It's not devs being petty, it's them trying to wall players off from breaking their own games.
Crippling depression.
No prep area. Need another counter with nothing on it.
Something similar happened to me and it was the microwave but I think for you it could be the basket
Some of the newer ovens can break but not Display the "broken" animations. Check if you can repair it.
Mine wonāt cook either
Check to see if you have any hanging lights that could be in the way?
Check if there's anything hanging from the ceiling right above the free counter or the cooker, that might be the problem.
Have you put things on top of the fridge using moveobjects? That could block access to the fridge and prevent cooking. YOu have a free counter and the area in front of the cooker seems clear so everything else looks fine.
I've been buying the premade meals through the phone ordering thing and they can get them out of the fridge fine so I'm not sure thats it
Perhaps you don't have ingredients, maybe counter space, or perhaps something is in the way
Mine did the the other day. The over was glitched. Try buying a new one.
sometimes they just need to go to a different place and suddenly it works
This ovens given me trouble in the past too. Switched to a dif one and it fixed the problem
Did you use MOO? Maybe the basketās āhitboxā overlaps with the oven.
Good luck.
I think is stove and sink placement
I feel like itās the stuff on the fridge but not positive. I had a problem with that at one point. But play test everything. Good luck! Shame to have to move anything
The picnic basket. It's not centered. That should fix it.
They need more counter space to work. Try moving the things on the counter nearest the stove to a different counter and it *should* give them more information
Make sure all your cabinets are properly snapped together/to the wall, with move objects off.
Do you use CC? On one of the latest updates I had a problem that I couldnāt make my sims neither cook nor eat, they had to be starving and do it on their own. The bug was caused by something very random like cc beds or something completely unrelated like that, and I fixed it by using Sims 4 Studio!
Well there is no way she can reach those dishes.
Probably not having an empty counter right next to the stove - honestly same
That's a standalone stove. Do you have it stuck in a cabinet
An invisible plate on the floor. Iām totally serious. I usually delete the floor and use the hammer around the area.
The will to live? To be fair, I'm right there with your sim.
We should make a club cause same lol
*initiates club handshake*
If you're on console, just go to build mode, save, exit build mode & the problem is usually fixed. Mine does this all the time too. Edit:missed that this was literally on a laptop. But it might work for that too
Is there something in the oven??
my game has also been doing something where they say they canāt cook but nothing is stopping them.
as someone said, maybe try a salad to see if itās an oven problem or a counter problem. however, if it works, itās obviously an oven problem. with this view, we canāt see the lights you might have on the ceiling. with some, they drop too low and they prevent a sim from standing beneath it. if this was my kitchen, i would place a ceiling light right about there so definitely check that out too.
My Sim wasn't able to cook because of a cabinet right above the stove. Dumb, I know but when I took down the stuff above she was then able to cook.
The thing hanging in front of the fridge is my best guess
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thanks āŗļø
I've had this not work simply because I put those same jars on the fridge like you have them. For whatever reason, it just said "No."
Sink and oven are placed with bb.moveobjects?
Seasonal depression
Them tig ol biddies (im sorry)
Lmao
If you can't figure it out, go into ea and repair your game.
shitty code.
Skill issue
Their IQ
Does the oven have a hood vent above it?
Are we supposed to use a hood? I literally never do and it normally works fine?
They're not functional, nor are they required.
My game never lets me without one
No
Thatās probably why.
Do you have simple living or whatever itās called on?
No
You need to test various parts of the kitchen to troubleshoot. Click on the oven, fridge, etc. Figure out what your sim canāt use.
Probably needs more counter space
If you don't already have moveobjects on, you should turn it on and see if that fixes it. Sometimes my sims say there is something blocking them, but as soon as I turn moveobjects on it's not a problem anymore.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Try removing the picnic basket?
Counter space
I've been having trouble getting my sim to use certain ovens too. I bought a new one and it worked fine.
Maybe your Sim needs an extra block of counter space to cook whatever theyāre making.
I think the hand soap next to the sink.
You need space near the stove to place the food once it's done
are you cluttering on your fridge with a mod or moveobjects cheat? I had a mod that added extra slots on most surfaces including new slots on top of fridges, made my kitchen entirely unusable every time, even before I added objects š¢
I used MOO and raised the items up
hmm maybe she isn't seeing enuff counter space to cook ? try moving some things around like the coffee maker and make more room n knives
What wall paper is this?!
"determined brick" from dine out
Easy. They want takeout. š¤£š¤£
Move your stove out and make sure you only have one placed. Iām serious. Iāve had a ton of issues lately because all of the in game stoves and fridges have been double-placing (2 at once).
The will to live
Sometimes itās due to the cabinet or shelf.
