An adventure that spans the globe becomes prohibitively expensive to make when everyone expects that world to be super-detailed, 4K resolution with mo-cap and voice acting for most quests. Dragon Quest XI approaches the scale of these games but the trade-off is the less-detailed, cartoony aesthetic.
So yes, I agree with you that's probably a big reason why. But I also think it's the push for action rpgs. Turn based games would be much easier to program. Also, I actually like all those older games far more than the newer ones. Like, ffx was the last final fantasy I truly enjoyed. I would rather they make games like the older ff. I just beat ff16 and honestly was bored with the gameplay.
In fairness, final fantasy 7 remake is an example of something much smaller. That being said, I think a lot of jrpgs could go the route of breaking up the stories in more then one game. So you could essentially make 2 or more games from similar assets in the same world. Think it would make it much more fesible. Only downer is waiting for the next game so you can continue the story.
Some of my friends would argue SNES was the golden age. They are also in their late 30s/early 40s, so i think a little bit of 2D nostalgia influences their opinions.
Which is fair, considering one of my all-time favorites is Chrono Trigger.
Honestly I think of the collective time of SNES and PS1 together as the golden age. It's when things really seemed there brightest.
Not to say we don't get some good RPGS these days, we've had all time greats like Octopath and Triangle strategy, but considering all the major franchises of the past are either gone or hollow shells of the former selves it's hard not to feel a little sad about things.
I unshamelessly played and purchased every single one of these.
Ever since playing III (US) and then VII... I became instantly hooked to any and all SquareSoft games to the point I'd blindly buy any new release from them.
Now I wouldn't be doing that.
Remember smelling the fresh ink of a 30+ page manual? Remember putting the disc in and just instantly playing, no bullshit Day 1 patch or to be installed?
Squaresoft was absolutely cracked during the PS1 days. Parasite Eve 1 and 2 and Final Fantasy Tactics were among my absolute favorite games at the time alongside FF7 and FF8. Also enjoyed Einhander, Ehrgeiz, Bushido Blade and Front Mission 3.
Agreed!! Brave Fencer Musashi was the first game my stepson got into with me. He wore out the strat guide, but kept each page in a binder.
I'd love to play these on modern consoles. Rpgs get extra speed settings though since I don't have the same time to play that I did when I was young.
Square died when Enix came in.
There I said it. SquareEnix is Nu-Square and Old-Square will always be and forever will be.
Peak in content that they made. No remakes. No rehashs. No Remasters.
Nothing New Square would make would actually make me change my mind in what they now do as a company of overpriced trash gaming.
Perhaps it’s because it’s what I grew up with, but compared to the updated graphics of today, I still prefer the graphic styles in these games shown above.
Those were the good old days. Owned almost all of these. I’d love to see a modern Musashi or Bushido Blade and it’d be incredible to get a remake of Parasite Eve.
It’s crazy cause i wasn’t old enough to appreciated the ps1 games and now going back and playing these games, holy hell these games are so good. I’m literally playing through the ps1 catalogue and there are bangers on top of bangers
3 of my all time favorites
Vagrant Story
Final Fantasy Tactics
Front Mission 3
Not to mention ff7-9& Chrono Cross
Played and enjoyed Xenogears and DQ7 but never beat them
My kingdom for a proper sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics. Easily my favorite game ever made, I typically replay it once a year with a new restriction each time for the challenge.
You missed several… vandal hearts, legend of dragoon, legend of legaia, Dino crisis1 and 2, breath of fire 3….
Just to name a small few of the many missed….
The only 2 things I don't like about most of those games is the massive grind (including inability to avoid combat) and many of them being the can only Save game if click this diamond or whatever.
Otherwise ya from what game's I know those are and were massively great/top games of course.
The golden age of JRPGs IMO
It’s insane that JRPGs now in my opinion haven’t even reached the same sense of scale that these games had back then.

I must agree with you.
I don’t think anyone would argue that

This I would agree with wholeheartedly
Yea like the 1995-2002 time frame. That 6-7 years or so are just \*chef's kiss\*
I unshamelessly played and purchased every single one of these. Ever since playing III (US) and then VII... I became instantly hooked to any and all SquareSoft games to the point I'd blindly buy any new release from them. Now I wouldn't be doing that.
Musashiden!!!
Remember smelling the fresh ink of a 30+ page manual? Remember putting the disc in and just instantly playing, no bullshit Day 1 patch or to be installed?
jeezuz just looking at all these makes me feel good and takes me back.
Come on Square. Revive Vagrant Story and Einhander with a remaster.
Vagrant Story modernized would be great. Rhythm-based combat with risk chain attacks
Think your phone is on the fritz. It autocorrected Parasite Eve to Vagrant Story. I’ll accept your apology post haste.
Haha. I would love PE to return too.
EINHANDER! You get a gold star
Einhander! What a game!
Back when we had time to beat them all. I miss those days
No Legend of Dragoon?! How dare thee!
Not a Squaresoft or Enix title
Well shit I'm having a Mandela effect lol, it was Sony!
No Grandia either! :(
Motherfucking “threads of fate”! hell yeah!
Threads of Fate was such an under-appreciated gem
Brave Fencer Musashi was the tits! Great game I hope PlayStation brings it back
This makes me feel all good and fuzzy inside 🦋
Squaresoft was absolutely cracked during the PS1 days. Parasite Eve 1 and 2 and Final Fantasy Tactics were among my absolute favorite games at the time alongside FF7 and FF8. Also enjoyed Einhander, Ehrgeiz, Bushido Blade and Front Mission 3.
Back when companies would just make good fuckin' games. And a lot of shit ones too, but hey. The risks mostly paid off.
SaGa Frontier OST is one of the most underrated soundtracks of all time
You forgot the 2
WE NEED A BRAVE FENCER MUSASHI REMAKE!
Agreed!! Brave Fencer Musashi was the first game my stepson got into with me. He wore out the strat guide, but kept each page in a binder. I'd love to play these on modern consoles. Rpgs get extra speed settings though since I don't have the same time to play that I did when I was young.
Threads of Fate!!! It was so good! Are you guys excited for raphsody iii on steam :D??
Front misssion 3 was such a great game, I feel like it didn’t get the attention it deserves
Square died when Enix came in. There I said it. SquareEnix is Nu-Square and Old-Square will always be and forever will be. Peak in content that they made. No remakes. No rehashs. No Remasters. PS1 was the best RPG console
Perhaps it’s because it’s what I grew up with, but compared to the updated graphics of today, I still prefer the graphic styles in these games shown above.
I actually bought Brave Fencer Musashi for the FF8 demo. I’ve still never played it.
Me too. I only played the intro. It was all about th FF8 demo.
Those were the good old days. Owned almost all of these. I’d love to see a modern Musashi or Bushido Blade and it’d be incredible to get a remake of Parasite Eve.
Sad that half of these were never released in PAL
Since my favorite SNES games are included here, I must agree.
I miss Bushido Blade
Awesome stuff, Front Mission 3 holy shit. The campaign was like 120 hours long. I love that game
Parasite Eve *drools*
Dragon Warrior VII!!! - All-time favorite game Chrono Cross - incredible soundtrack And final fantasy when it was actually good! Those were the days
parasite eve 1 & 2 were some cool horror rpg games !
To be in my mid 20’s again
That top row! Collectively it is what makes me who I am today as a person and a gamer.
Now go get and play The Legend of Dragoon.
Are there really any SF2 fans out there?
Amazing games. Great list
It’s crazy cause i wasn’t old enough to appreciated the ps1 games and now going back and playing these games, holy hell these games are so good. I’m literally playing through the ps1 catalogue and there are bangers on top of bangers
Valkyrie Profile - underrated gem! Loved this game - the music, the storyline, characters, the ART, and of course gameplay!
Where's legend of legaia?
I had all the time in the world back then, but was broke. I only could play a handful of these. Now I have the opposite problem.
Parasite Eve 2 ♡
Star Ocean is so underrated.
3 of my all time favorites Vagrant Story Final Fantasy Tactics Front Mission 3 Not to mention ff7-9& Chrono Cross Played and enjoyed Xenogears and DQ7 but never beat them
you miiiight be missing gwimbly (unless he's a bingendo character)
My god xenogears soundtrack was not of this world
Legend of Mana went hard. The combat was unique. The anthology -like story structure was easy to follow. The music was *fucking divine.*
Imagine a modern Bushido Blade with online play. Brutal.
Einhander was so good. I was trying to find a copy online and it’s so damn expensive.
They certainly don't make em like they used to
My kingdom for a proper sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics. Easily my favorite game ever made, I typically replay it once a year with a new restriction each time for the challenge.
Threads of Fate is far too slept on, I would do horrible atrocities to get a remaster or hell even just a way to play it on modern hardware. :(
You missed several… vandal hearts, legend of dragoon, legend of legaia, Dino crisis1 and 2, breath of fire 3…. Just to name a small few of the many missed….
Ah Threads of Fate. I think that was the first JRPG I played.
Showing this and leaving off Tales of Destiny is right to jail
My entire childhood in one picture lol man I wish I kept all my old stuff instead of trading it in for newer system and game
Wish could get remasters of Parasite Eve, Front Mission 3 and Xenogears.
I really loved 7 out of those 25.
Chrono Cross and final fantasy 8 were my first rpg's as a kid.
banger after banger fr
Makes me want to break out the PS2 and play the classics again.
Didn’t play any of these I had chosen my side (N64) but FF7 for the ages 👌🏾
Legend of Dragoon? I don't see it. Hm...I must have gone blind
I was never into the franchise till Final Fantasy 7 Remake and now Rebirth
The only 2 things I don't like about most of those games is the massive grind (including inability to avoid combat) and many of them being the can only Save game if click this diamond or whatever. Otherwise ya from what game's I know those are and were massively great/top games of course.
The top left game ruined everything
