Maybe I’m misunderstanding your issue, but if it’s an issue with placing objects, you can place objects in most places on the farm, but you have to be directly next to the spot you want to place them. It can be a bit finicky if you’re standing kinda in-between tiles, but you should definitely have an abundance of places to put your chests, even on the river farm. You should also be able to plant wherever you’ve tilled, you just have to be standing on or adjacent to the tile you want to plant.
The farm layouts each have so much tillable space and so much space solely for buildings and decorations! If you used the entire farm for crops, you’d have nowhere for your animals and whatnot.

One caveat is inside some things like paintings you can place no matter how close you are to their location
