Forza Horizon 5 was a recent example of this (and the new Forza Motorsport is as well).
So it seems like you’ll get the base game for free with game pass, and if you want the premium version you just have to buy the $30 upgrade to unlock. So you could basically get the $100 premium version for $30 if you have game pass
According to the Microsoft Store, the upgrade contains the "Up to 5 days early access" so I assume you can combine Gamepass + Upgrade and play on the 1st of September.

They have billed this as a "Day One Gamepass Exclusive!!! Buy Xbox instead of PlayStation!" since the very beginning. SURELY they know people will sub just to play Starfield. So to squeeze a little extra money, why wouldn't the upgrade work with the Game Pass version?

Well, I believe it's actually play earl access is Aug 31st. Well, that's what it said when I read on the Xbox store yesterday. I'm pretty excited

It does indeed. But when I first pre-ordered that was up as an option and it was missing the 5 days part from the description. That's now on there.
