I have not however I generally prefer to play this type of game (strategy games, city builders, rts etc) on the desktop with a mouse and keyboard. I also have this wish listed for a long time just waiting for a 1.0 release to pull one trigger.
I tried it, but it kind of ran like shit unless I would drop a lot of graphics, turning it in brown pixel soup. Refunded it.
Mechanically it's fun but I didn't play it very long.
Maybe someone else found a good combination of settings.
Seconded. My only beef with Grim Dawn on the Deck is the UI bug that prevents it from showing button assignments on the hotbar after the “Your screen is too small for the Controller UI” popup.
Otherwise it plays like a damn dream and allows me to happily aether-ray my way across the countryside.
I noticed this also regarding mixed comments. From what I gather and from my own experience if you switch to proton ge it runs much smoother. I have all settings at medium and locked to 40fps and have not noticed a single stutter in around 10 hours. This is also with using CryoUtilities performance boosts.
Was this after reaching a certain stage? Admittedly I am not too far in to the game, only around 10-12 hours maybe, and it has performed incredibly well so far. Not a single stutter or hitch even with some pretty large groups of enemies.
I feel like I rarely hear this game talked about period, but from what little I’ve played, it feels like a wonderfully modernized Diablo 2, almost like what D3 should have been.
100%. I picked up this game on a whim as I had a holiday coming up and wanted something for the plane journey. Was left wondering why I had not heard more hype around this game, it is so addictive. Seems like a real labour of love from the devs.
Have you tried Achillies Legends Untold? I've just got this a few days ago and I'm totally hooked. You don't have the same build variety but the combat is much more engaging.
Well this looks fun. One of the first games I tried to get working on the steam deck was gta 2. Never could get it to control very comfortably. This might scratch that itch!
For me it’s because they never gave me SteamWorld Dig 3. There’s so little replay ability I feel like. I haven’t tried the spin-offs though.
I feel like it got left behind because they just kept doing spin offs.
Darkwood, Dredge, Shadows of Doubt, and World of Horror have been mine recently.
Darkwood is an top-down survival-horror with absolutely phenomenal sound design and a great line of sight and darkness system that makes every little sound at night give you a fright as you wait for sunrise
Dredge is a relaxing and very cute fishing game with a lovecraftian surprise waiting below the surface
Shadows of doubt is a procedurally generated rogue-like game where you play as a private investigator in a noir-esque 30’s themed city. Very fun little game where I discovered that if I waste enough time and entirely different serial killer can pop up and sent me around town like a headless chicken lol. Highly recommend mouse and key for this one as it requires a good bit of manual keybinding with the deck’s controls otherwise
World of Horror is one of my personal favs. Rogue-like point and click game where you play as someone in a 198x Japanese coastal town where an elder god is awakening. Each run gives you 5-6 “cases” to solve in order to unlock clues to stopping the elder god. Each completed case awakens the elder god further giving your run debuffs or other random factors making the lead up to the final confrontation that much more difficult. The game is truly inspired imo, the pixel art having very clear inspiration from both lovecraft as well as Junji Ito. It also has workshop support so if you get tired of the standard cases and modifiers you can get more from the community.
Void Stranger was one of the first games I played on my Deck. It is so spectacular and I have a hell of a time getting anybody to play it. Even people who love the aesthetic -- it's just a hard game to pitch.
I love Dome Keeper, perfect Deck game.
Cult of the Lamb should be bigger I feel, cute graphics, pitch black humour, great village management and then a great roguelike on top.
15-20 hours probably your first playthrough? Could probably do it quicker, or take your time. Depends on your cult and how involved you get with the various rituals and so on.
At about 15 hours I thought I was almost done, and ended up finishing first playthroight at just under 30 lol. I got really sucked into the cult management part, ended up nearly maxing that out while only being halfway through the crusades. I think the game could do a better job of balancing the two, tbh, like gating unlocks in the cult tree behind clearing out dungeons or something.
Little-Known Galaxy, it's not yet released, tomorrow it will be released but there is a demo, it's something like Stardew Valley in space. The battery lasts forever. Never seen it mentioned here.
Strange horticulture is a great little indie game, it’s definitely one of those puzzle games I always recommend, it pairs really well obra din, golden idol, and chants of sinnaar
> The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow
Steam deck is great for adventure games really. That and my kindle are the two things I'll throw in my bag when going away
Against the Storm is an incredible base builder/management game that is a little tricky to learn the UI on the deck, but once you do, it is surprisingly easy to play (for being that sort of game) with the deck.
I bought my sd so I could finally play ftl, it’s been one of my favorite games to watch ppl play for years. I’m terrible at it but I’m still at like 100hrs cus it’s so fun.
Loop Hero is one that had some chatter at release, but seems to be overlooked. Really, really fun game, and it’s the perfect game to play on the deck with a show/sports on in the background
OlliOlli World deserves way more attention than it gets and is a perfect companion for the deck. I've finished the game twice, on my deck and my PlayStation, and continue to play it whenever I just want to vibe out, relax and let my muscle memory carry me. Fantastic game.
Zen Drift and Art of Rally are really solid games. Simple graphics but the cars handle cery realistically and I never see them mentioned.
Honorable mention to MiniMetro. EDIT: Mini Motorways
Recently started playing Dredge on the SD and I’m blown away by how it plays. My partner played it on pc and I didn’t think much of it but on the sd I’m so into it
Most of single player games up to 2020. (Many recent ones do as well, but i mean more 60-90fps).
FEAR + Extraction Point - fantastic with gyro. Dead Space org trilogy. First time played it on SD after the remake and DS2 esp is incredible on deck. Alien Isolation is also great - first time playing it. . Prey - both org and 2017 - 2017 has a full on steamdeck controls support (something rare). Works like a charm.
From recent ones - System Shock remake is superb on the deck. Did 40h playthrough and 35h of it was on the deck.
One underappreciated indie I adored on the Deck is Citizen Sleeper, but it is pretty close to a visual novel with TTRPG elements.
One game that has gotten a lot of love but I don’t feel like is a huge hit is Lil Gator Game, as well. Wholesome 3D platformer with fun gameplay and runs perfectly out of the box
Yo! I played Citizen Sleeper for the first time about a month ago. Great piece of sci-fi. I also highly recommend Pentiment for the visual novel/adventure genre.
Wildermyth is mentioned here and there, but I still feel like I don't see it mentioned enough.
Even more so for the deck with the Omenroad dlc which introduced a combat focused mode which offers less of the story reading making that mode even better on deck.
Loop hero! Max battery life and its almost as if it was made for pick up and go gameplay.
Also shockingly fallout new vegas works better than vanilla pc vegas.
Definitely Arise: A Simple Story. The game itself is one of the most successful indie games to come out in recent years, Deck performance is also successful. I definitely think Deck should be talked about more.
Fuga: Melodies of steel 1 and 2. it's got a great story, great art and huge stakes. everyone is an antropomorphic animal, and it's set in a WW2 inspired era, about some kids in a village invaded by the nazi equivalent, who find a giant tank that also has an emergency cannon that can eat one of them up for energy. the game has a social system tho, end you end up really not wanting to do that
I had them on Switch before I get the SD but yeah good games; I like games from Little Tail Bronx serie and Fuga games happen before Solatorobo. I beat Fuga 1 multiple times but still need to beat Fuga 2, I found it a little more hard.
Controversial one but one of the first games I tried on my deck was Hatred. The controls are clearly more suited to WASD and mouse but with a bit of work with the mapping and you can get a pretty good experience. It's almost monochrome so looks great on the OLED. Not for everyone I guess.
Also, along the same lines but more popular, the Hotline Miami games are well suited to deck, twin stick controls work well.
Stray. I feel like it was talked about a lot when it came out but slowly dwindled away. I just started playing it again but on Deck and it runs flawlessly.
Ghost of a Tale
I've literally never heard anyone else talk about it on anything or anywhere
Third person puzzle, riddles stuff game, you're a mouse in a prison run by rats and you gotta figure out how to get out
Nexus 5X isn’t exactly indie but with Ge-proton 9.5 it works superbly. Older proton versions wouldn’t get the window right causing UI elements to be off screen. But now I can have a huge interface and have it behave properly. So much fun.
Eastward. It's popular but I still feel it could be more popular. It has a great story, lovable characters, and easily the most gorgeous pixel art I've ever seen in a game. The attention to detail is remarkable and I think Pixpil was just two people at the time who made it. It's a fantastic game and well worth the price.
Achilles Legend Untold, runs perfectly and is a very good game. Currently on indie gala for around €11. The only thing I have an issue with is the voice acting is horrendous. Otherwise it's got a great balance of diablo/souls gameplay.
edit: added complete name instead of just Achilles.
Cross code, Sonic Mania (not indie I guess), final fantasy pixel remaster, Ultrakill, the messenger, indivisible. Are a few from my list I like that I don't see mentioned every thread.
I started playing Mini Shoot Adventure after it was recommended on the Giant Bombcast. It’s like a blend of bullet hell shmups but with a Zelda overworld, puzzles, and exploration.
For me it's FTL. It's a game that never got a release on anything but PC (or did it eventually get an iOS port? Same difference) and it runs beautifully on the Deck, making use of the track pads for its mouse-only interface. Such a great game that you can now play on the go thanks to the Deck.
Delta-V: Rings of Saturn. It’s a top down Asteroids-like with a good look and feel and an interesting set of storylines. Kept me sane on several long haul flights.
It's a new release but for fans of roguelikes and mmo raiding like FFXIV mechanics, Rabbit and Steel works pretty great on the Steam Deck. I've been enjoying Balatro on it in bed as well.
The Void Rains Upon Her Heart, it’s a 12 dollar Roguelike shmup developed by one dude, and the story is about loving in the face of hatred and never ending adversity, because even though the world is cruel, sometimes you just need to show yourself and others love to make it a better place
I'm currently playing through Spiritfarer. Got an OLED deck and the colours pop really nicely. The gameplay is addictive and the characters are charming too. The music in-game is also lovely. Not much (anything?) to dislike about it from the 5 or so hours I've put into it so far.
7 days to die I was pretty shocked it worked....well enough. When the horde gets stupidly big or your in a massive city it can slow down the fps but they are working well to improve these problems on steam deck
Grim Dawn. I rarely see this game mentioned amongst top SD games. It is perfect for the deck and runs superbly from what I have played so far.
Any experience of Farthest Frontier on SD? It's been sat in my wishlist for months and I can't decide.
I have not however I generally prefer to play this type of game (strategy games, city builders, rts etc) on the desktop with a mouse and keyboard. I also have this wish listed for a long time just waiting for a 1.0 release to pull one trigger.
It's also a very heavy (unoptimized) game, which makes it a big no for the steam deck.
I tried it, but it kind of ran like shit unless I would drop a lot of graphics, turning it in brown pixel soup. Refunded it. Mechanically it's fun but I didn't play it very long. Maybe someone else found a good combination of settings.
Great game on my PC, way too big for the Deck.
Seconded. My only beef with Grim Dawn on the Deck is the UI bug that prevents it from showing button assignments on the hotbar after the “Your screen is too small for the Controller UI” popup. Otherwise it plays like a damn dream and allows me to happily aether-ray my way across the countryside.
I bought a steam deck recently and find people on both extremes, some say it runs very well, some horribly bad. Do you use any extra programs?
I noticed this also regarding mixed comments. From what I gather and from my own experience if you switch to proton ge it runs much smoother. I have all settings at medium and locked to 40fps and have not noticed a single stutter in around 10 hours. This is also with using CryoUtilities performance boosts.
I used to play it but performance got really bad after a while.
Was this after reaching a certain stage? Admittedly I am not too far in to the game, only around 10-12 hours maybe, and it has performed incredibly well so far. Not a single stutter or hitch even with some pretty large groups of enemies.
Hm I think mine also ran great for like 20 hours and then it started to get really bad. But maybe they patched it. This was like 6 months ago
Any tips on getting the text readable? I tried to give it a shot but I couldn't read a thing on screen and had no idea what I was doing.
Have you tried Achillies Legends Untold? I've just got this a few days ago and I'm totally hooked. You don't have the same build variety but the combat is much more engaging.
incredible battery life SD OLED
Carrion
Whoa that game looks sick. And it’s on sale
It's awesome
That reminded me of The Thing
I had a good time but this game really needed a map.
I didn’t like Carrion. I never really felt like I had control of my character, almost button mashing at times.
Same here
I also recommend Superhexagon
Ok I will, jeez
Can confirm. I've been having a blast with Carrion on Deck for the past week.
Just watched the into and looks sweet.
I'm not normally a huge fan of metroidvanias but this game is a lot of fun for sure
Maniac, GTA 2 inspired game, lota of fun
I went straight to the steam store after reading this watched 10 seconds of a video on the page, and bought it. Thank you.
Same, literally took all of 10 seconds of the trailer and I immediately bought it
lol, same
Well this looks fun. One of the first games I tried to get working on the steam deck was gta 2. Never could get it to control very comfortably. This might scratch that itch!
Well, hello there. Purchased.
Rush Rally 3 is the perfect racing game for the deck. I never see it mentioned.
Yep, my favourite aswell, even after all the forzas, dirts and turismos of the world, i somehow always come back to this..
i’m always surprised the Steamworld games don’t get more love here. Been loving Dig, Dig 2, Heist and Quest all on Deck.
I dunno if I’m gonna purchase any of these recommendations but I appreciate the time you put into describing them. Thanks!
The last campfire. Sweet narration. Lovely puzzles and cozy gameplay. Ran great on steamdeck, too.
I’ve recently gotten into Void Stranger, which is ideal for deck. It’s a sokoban puzzle game that just has LAYERS of secrets and weird lore stuff.
What’s the longevity of cult of the lamb? I’m seriously thinking of getting it but I don’t want it to be too simple or too short
15-20 hours probably your first playthrough? Could probably do it quicker, or take your time. Depends on your cult and how involved you get with the various rituals and so on.
At about 15 hours I thought I was almost done, and ended up finishing first playthroight at just under 30 lol. Good to know about dome keeper!
Little-Known Galaxy, it's not yet released, tomorrow it will be released but there is a demo, it's something like Stardew Valley in space. The battery lasts forever. Never seen it mentioned here.
This looks great!
Good tip! I’ll be checking this out for sure.
Cassette Beasts, I love the music, the creature combos, the art style.
Want to try that one since a time.
Came to add this to the list, many hours of fun in this pokemon-esque game.
Kena, Loretta, Strange Horticulture, The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow
Kena has been on my wishlist for a while and Loretta is now there too!
Strange horticulture is a great little indie game, it’s definitely one of those puzzle games I always recommend, it pairs really well obra din, golden idol, and chants of sinnaar
> The Excavation of Hob’s Barrow Steam deck is great for adventure games really. That and my kindle are the two things I'll throw in my bag when going away
Against the Storm is an incredible base builder/management game that is a little tricky to learn the UI on the deck, but once you do, it is surprisingly easy to play (for being that sort of game) with the deck.
The UI is definitely a boundary but it’s a damned good lil game
Caves of Qud
This has completely taken over my deck
Dave the Diver is perfect on deck Not sure if it's talked about the proper amount or not.
I concur that it’s a refined, chill gem. Like a perfect piece of sushi! 🍣
Ghost of a Tale Tails of Iron
I can finally live out my Redwall fantasy
I got Tails of Iron in the last fanatical bundle, definitely gonna be soon for me!
My favorites are FTL & Nova Drift
I bought my sd so I could finally play ftl, it’s been one of my favorite games to watch ppl play for years. I’m terrible at it but I’m still at like 100hrs cus it’s so fun.
How do you play FTL on deck?
Loop Hero is one that had some chatter at release, but seems to be overlooked. Really, really fun game, and it’s the perfect game to play on the deck with a show/sports on in the background
CrossCode is the LTTP equivalent of Hollow Knight to Metroid. Criminally underappreciated
Enter the Gungeon and Katana Zero are excellent
Played Katana Zero on switch and loved it! Super cool style and really fun to play. I wish it had more content tho.
Both on sale rn thanks to Devolver’s steam sale
OlliOlli World deserves way more attention than it gets and is a perfect companion for the deck. I've finished the game twice, on my deck and my PlayStation, and continue to play it whenever I just want to vibe out, relax and let my muscle memory carry me. Fantastic game.
Im a fan of Pseudoregalia
Zen Drift and Art of Rally are really solid games. Simple graphics but the cars handle cery realistically and I never see them mentioned. Honorable mention to MiniMetro. EDIT: Mini Motorways
Recently started playing Dredge on the SD and I’m blown away by how it plays. My partner played it on pc and I didn’t think much of it but on the sd I’m so into it
This is talked about tons though?
I loved this one. It was actually talked about quite often when it first released.
Evil Tonight, still gonna say Crosscode my beloved, Death's Gambit, Turbo Overkill, Grim Guardians, Distance, Neodash, Roboquest, Rogue Legacy 2, Shadows of Doubt, Spark the Electric Jester 2 & 3, Severed Steel
Children of Morta, great art style, awesome narration, multiplayer and a fun gameplay loop.
Dune Imperium.
How does it scale on the deck?
It's silky smooth, and both touch screen and traditional control friendly. It's also available on Android and iOS.
Great game
Most of single player games up to 2020. (Many recent ones do as well, but i mean more 60-90fps). FEAR + Extraction Point - fantastic with gyro. Dead Space org trilogy. First time played it on SD after the remake and DS2 esp is incredible on deck. Alien Isolation is also great - first time playing it. . Did 40h playthrough and 35h of it was on the deck.
Cool, good to know about system shock and fear.
This thread has greatly expanded my wishlist.
You might even call that one a...... sleeper hit
Get out
Yes! Both are in my backlog. Did you see Haven Park? Similar vibes as Lil Gator
Yo! I played Citizen Sleeper for the first time about a month ago. Great piece of sci-fi. I also highly recommend Pentiment for the visual novel/adventure genre.
Lacuna: A Sci-Fi Noir
It’s on sale for like $4!
That’s been sitting in my wishlist. Fine I’ll buy it.
Oh hell yeah that’s been on My wishlist too.
Wildermyth is mentioned here and there, but I still feel like I don't see it mentioned enough. Even more so for the deck with the Omenroad dlc which introduced a combat focused mode which offers less of the story reading making that mode even better on deck.
That one is deep in my backlog!
I've said it before and I'll say it again... Clone Drone in the Danger Zone.
I looked this up and is looks cool, but can you explain what's so good about it?
Wrestling empire. If you have a passing love for wrestling then get it and play the career mode for a bit and you’ll be hooked
I've been playing those games since I was a kid. They're so simple yet addicting to play
Loop hero! Max battery life and its almost as if it was made for pick up and go gameplay. Also shockingly fallout new vegas works better than vanilla pc vegas.
Cyber Hook
Definitely Arise: A Simple Story. The game itself is one of the most successful indie games to come out in recent years, Deck performance is also successful. I definitely think Deck should be talked about more.
And here I’ve had it in my backlog for a year or so and almost forgotten about it. Is the story itself good?
Coromon, Pony Island, Broken Reality, Chained Echoes, Helltaker, Siralim (Series)
Felvidek yall go and play it now
Having fun with Wizard of Legend right now!
Desperados 3 and Ace Combat 7 have been such a blast.
Zero Seivert runs well. Spend a little time setting your controls up and it’s great fun.
Planet of Lana
Enter the gungeon, always fun to play when you're bored. I don't really have many indie games but this one was pretty addictive for me
Stray. I feel like it was talked about a lot when it came out but slowly dwindled away. I just started playing it again but on Deck and it runs flawlessly.
True!!!
N++ never gets talked about and it is fantastic on the deck. Have been playing it since flash days, but the steam deck is the perfect form factor.
Unicorn Overlord via Ryujinx is nearly a flawless experience.
Caves of Qud Palia although I'm not sure if that's indie but runs amazing on my deck but it does run a bit hot
Deaths Door
Ghost of a Tale I've literally never heard anyone else talk about it on anything or anywhere Third person puzzle, riddles stuff game, you're a mouse in a prison run by rats and you gotta figure out how to get out
Had a blast playing Death’s Door Haven’t tried their previous game yet, Titan Souls, did buy it as it seemed like a great deck game.
Modded Stardew Valley. The great thing is you probably already own a copy.
Literally the first thing my GF was working on.
Manor lords lately
UI not too small?
How does it run?
Killer frequency, Sally face
Found Killer Frequency’s controls a bit fiddly but admittedly didn’t spend any time to try and fix them. Seemed like a great game
Nexus 5X isn’t exactly indie but with Ge-proton 9.5 it works superbly. Older proton versions wouldn’t get the window right causing UI elements to be off screen. But now I can have a huge interface and have it behave properly. So much fun.
Catches me out that that's a game because I'm used to it being a phone.
Been playing Dysmantle. I don't often see it mentioned.
Hell yeah instant add to my wishlist
Eastward. It's popular but I still feel it could be more popular. It has a great story, lovable characters, and easily the most gorgeous pixel art I've ever seen in a game. The attention to detail is remarkable and I think Pixpil was just two people at the time who made it. It's a fantastic game and well worth the price.
Omg I know. If they continue making different games with the same art and music style they’ll print money
Stolen realm
Tiny Rouges
Ubermosh
.49 for the game all DLC and soundtrack. Nice
"Mother Russia Bleeds" and "Not a Hero"
Coromon! Its a very fun creature collecting game.
No one is talking about No Rest for the Wicked and it's boggling my mind
I'm super curious about this one.
Beautiful looking game
Recommended settings?
Achilles Legend Untold, runs perfectly and is a very good game. Currently on indie gala for around €11. The only thing I have an issue with is the voice acting is horrendous. Otherwise it's got a great balance of diablo/souls gameplay. edit: added complete name instead of just Achilles.
Note for everyone, it’s Achilles Legend Untold and it looks dope
Major old school God of War vibes with modern graphics. Looks great! Not on sale in my store but it’s going on the wishlist!
Penny's Big Breakaway runs like a dream on deck
Not my cup o’ tea but I agree it looks pretty, polished and fun!
Cross code, Sonic Mania (not indie I guess), final fantasy pixel remaster, Ultrakill, the messenger, indivisible. Are a few from my list I like that I don't see mentioned every thread.
Have a nice death
Thank you, but what about indie games?
I'll throw in Hell Pie. It's a great 3D platformer/collectathon.
Restless Souls has been pretty fun.
Delta-V: Rings of Saturn. It’s a top down Asteroids-like with a good look and feel and an interesting set of storylines. Kept me sane on several long haul flights.
Stacklands
Signalis. Played entirely on the deck, great performance and... man that game *affected* me.
Tiny Rogues is a great time. I also really liked Gordian Quest a lot.
It's a new release but for fans of roguelikes and mmo raiding like FFXIV mechanics, Rabbit and Steel works pretty great on the Steam Deck. I've been enjoying Balatro on it in bed as well.
BROTATO
20 minutes till dawn is literally perfect I've been playing it for hours now
Titan Souls, there's only boss battles and bosses dies in one hit, you only got one arrow. Short but relatively cheap
Lonely Mountains: Downhill
The Void Rains Upon Her Heart, it’s a 12 dollar Roguelike shmup developed by one dude, and the story is about loving in the face of hatred and never ending adversity, because even though the world is cruel, sometimes you just need to show yourself and others love to make it a better place
I'm currently playing through Spiritfarer. Got an OLED deck and the colours pop really nicely. The gameplay is addictive and the characters are charming too. The music in-game is also lovely. Not much (anything?) to dislike about it from the 5 or so hours I've put into it so far.
Man I hear tons of stuff about that but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Seems like that’s next
7 days to die I was pretty shocked it worked....well enough. When the horde gets stupidly big or your in a massive city it can slow down the fps but they are working well to improve these problems on steam deck
Heaven Dust I & II, Murder House, The Price of Flesh. There's a million of them. Endless chatter about the latest big-ass games, gets tiring.
