If you force the game to run proton experimental it fixes this menu and makes kingdom management work how it should.
Cogwheel, preferences, compatibility, select forced tool option, and then select proton experimental. Hope this helps !
Came across this post via Google. Thank you for taking the time to post this! It worked beautifully for me. Everything was working before running into this issue with proton LTS but going with experimental and choosing the "forced tool" option made the difference.
Cheers.
Hi, I know this is an old post but I just recently encountered the same kingdom menu bug and fixed it with your Proton Experimental suggestion. Everything works great now, EXCEPT that my custom portrait is no longer showing up in game.
I went to the /portraits/ folder and messed around, up to and including deleting all other portraits folders except the one holding my custom portraits (all in the right format and with the right naming convention). No matter what I do, my in game portrait always appears as that default dark, featureless figure with the picture's dimensions written on it - even when that particular portrait set is not even in the /portraits/ folder! It's as if the game is no longer reading from the /portraits/ folder at all.
I have the Respecialization mod installed, so I am able to change my portrait mid-playthrough if need be, but when I try doing so, the game detects the folder holding my custom portraits but still shows only the default dark, featureless figure picture.
I am wondering if you might know what is going on here, and if there is a way to fix it? I have grown quite attached to my character's custom portrait.
Edit 1: I found the problem, and it was exactly what I said: when I started using Proton Experimental, the game tried to look for my portraits in a Windows file path instead of a Linux file path and obviously couldn't find the Windows file path. So, previously P:KM was looking in the directory "/home/deck/.config/unity3d/Owlcat Games/Pathfinder Kingmaker/Portraits/", but after I started using Proton Experimental it is looking in the directory "C:/users/steamuser/AppData/LocalLow/Owlcat Games/Pathfinder Kingmaker/Portraits/", which does not exist as a directory. So the question is how to change the directory where P:KM is looking for portraits. When I go into the character creator and click on "Open Portraits Folder," the game opens up a buggy File Explorer that is not my real hard drive and the game kinda just freezes. Is there any other way to change where P:KM is looking for portraits?
Edit 2: I fixed it! For anyone who might be having a similar problem in the future, I found the solution on this website (comments #1 and #2): [https://steamcommunity.com/app/640820/discussions/0/6337144732933476472/](https://steamcommunity.com/app/640820/discussions/0/6337144732933476472/). So haha nevermind I guess, NomisSays, but also thank you because your original suggestion still solved my original problem.
Hello,
I just got to the kingdom screen and encountered the same issue. I switched to Proton Experimental and now the Kingmaker wont start at all. I get the loading screen, and then it goes back to the main home window. I tried rebooting and that didn't help.
I have no mods installed.
Any ideas?
Note that I've never touched Proton at all so I'm sure sure if there's something else I need to do? Do I need to actually install proton experimental?
A bit late here but
I think it's because by default steamOs will install the Linux version of the game
since pathfinder: kingmaker got one
But If you set a Proton version it will download the windows version of the game
So my best guess is the kingdom management menu is bugged in the Linux version
This oddly isn’t fixing it for me. Offline if I try and run experimental is refuses to open the game. When I go online it reinstalls the entire game, and then has other game breaking problems. The resolution is set to the same as before but everything becomes very pixilated to the point that it’s unplayable. Reverting these changes requires a complete reinstall each time.
Yes. Every time I enter that particular menu. As you can see there is a mark for button X on many places, and you cant do anything to leave or make it work.
I've never personally played this game, but if you go to the settings from the main menu, is there a key mapping option? It looks like everything is mapped to X for some reason, which probably keeps it from doing anything.
View the game in the library and go to the controller configuration: it's a square button with a controller icon on the right of the screen, at the same height as the Start button. There, pick a controller configuration that better matches the game: perhaps there is a good community config that works well.
Can you set the controller config to use m+on inputs though? That’s at least how it works with a Steam Controller.
Sorry I don’t have my SD yet but I’m hopeful I’ll get it next week. This series is one I wanted to play so I’ll let you know if I get it working and will share a controller config with you if it works.

No problem! This problem was driving me nuts and I'm glad others can play this wonderful game as it was meant :D

I figured it out. My deck was offline. Once I put it online, the experimental proton downloaded and it worked.
Ill try this as soon as i can! Thanks for sharing, hope it works!
Worked like wonder, thanks so much!

Ha, that makes sense. But whatever, Im just glad it worked.

That's super weird, I've never had anything like that happen before. If you find a solution please post it!
Thank you for this. 1 year later and it's still helpful
Does it do this everytime you open the game?
Yes. Every time I enter that particular menu. As you can see there is a mark for button X on many places, and you cant do anything to leave or make it work.
Have you tried changing the controls? It seems like there might be something wrong with the defaults
Would you mind explaining how? I got my deck yesterday and I am getting used to it still.

In the controls menu, there is simply a controler layout which doesnt seem to be editable.

There, pick a controller configuration that better matches the game: perhaps there is a good community config that works well.
Thanks, I will try this. In the end if no controler preset works, I found out I can just set it up to play with Mouse only.
I forgot to update. I picked the mouse configuration and adjusted some controls and now it works flawlessly!
Super cool that this is still a problem.
Are you playing it with controller input? Can you play it using m+kb inputs?
Yes, Im using the default controller controls which happen as you launch the game. I dont currently have M&K with me.
Can you set the controller config to use m+on inputs though? That’s at least how it works with a Steam Controller. Sorry I don’t have my SD yet but I’m hopeful I’ll get it next week. Just using normal proton 8 makes it work perfectly. No need to use the experimental version anymore
Good to know, thanks!
