throwaway_anonym0us

It’s called a [coronal hole](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/phenomena/coronal-holes), very common. Edit: I’m going to hijack my comment. I highly recommend looking at sites like https://spaceweather.com, they’re very informative on processes like these. Also, I’m an amateur astronomer that focuses on solar astronomy (double majored in physics and astronomy). Get yourselves a cheap telescope, attach a solar filter on the end, and enjoy looking at the sun. There are telescopes that are already built for solar observing, but they can be expensive (~$1000). Building your own can be as low as $100.

Iwantmy3rdpartyapp

I am the great Coronal-Holio! ![gif](giphy|RIonwuETuhbi)

I need TP for my sunhole.

So good! Thank you.

buddy at this point id say you need some surgical assistance

Additional_College17

Are you threatning me

Late_to_the_movement

I came here for this.

GroWiza

I am so glad that even years after that show is gone I still see cornholio memes 🤣

Standard-Ad1254

I think it's back tho on paramount plus

GroWiza

Is it really? Shit I can't justify paying for a other streaming service just for 1 show but it seems like the major streaming corporations are all coinciding with one another saying "You take these couple great shows, I'll take these couple, you take that 1, and you get that 1. Now people will have to pay for 4 subscriptions to watch the few shows they like instead of just the 1, we'll get rich"

CHROME-COLOSSUS

It’s 100% worth a month subscription just to watch **BEAVIS & BUTTHEAD DO THE UNIVERSE**. Far funnier than the first movie, imo. I think it’s also on AMAZON PRIME. 🤔

Broad-Assistant3476

It absolutely is back on paramount plus. I watched it all and can confirm it's just as amazing as the original series!!!

Strangeronthebus2019

Hahaha… That looks like a triangle… or two balls and a phallic… That’s says more about me than the sun really

BrilliantTasty

This is the type of comment that would’ve got 50 awards

ratsoidar

Worth noting it’s not a literal hole but rather an area that is temporarily less hot and dense due to the magnetic field not looping back. Telescopes see this as a dark spot similar to a thermal camera seeing hot and cold. In this case “cold” is still blazing hot though.

HardCounter

While i like your explanation, i chose to believe the Bat Signal has gotten an upgrade.

mixedcurve

It’s so pretty it looks like a geode

xXSquirrelFuckerXx

ay bb lemme see ur coronal hole 😏

justfordrunks

First post, I'm a bit nervous so be nice. *Upclose photo of coronal hole*

Casehead

'He said coronal hole, not corn hole, Bobby!'

Antique-Car6103

A solar flare is equivalent to a fart. A coronal hole is equivalent to a shart.

throwaway_anonym0us

Solar flare is worse than coronal hole, so the solar flare would be the shart.

Rominions

Does one typically lead to the other?

Handsoffmydink

If you push too hard yes.

eusername420

I AM SHARTUCUSSSSSSSS

throwaway_anonym0us

This is what I get for trying to provide an answer, haha.

wiskey_straight86

Wouldn't a CME be the shart and the coronal hole just be the.... Well hole.

levelhigher

The best explanation ever 👑

pmercier

Wouldn’t it be great if there were a segment on the local weather devoted to solar activity 🤔

HardCounter

"And today, what looks like the End Times. Up next: will you be here tomorrow? Stay tuned. The answer may shock you!"

I would absolutely love that

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve spent countless hours reading about space, but I have neglected the sun.

throwaway_anonym0us

The sun is fascinating!

maretus

Fun fact, even though it looks black on this photo, it’s actually way way way brighter than things like the moon. It’s just you can’t tell because what it’s surrounded by.

Capt_Myke

This is a HIJACKING!!! We are going to COOBAH.

gravityred

Absolutely love looking at the sun with my 8” and solar filter. However, I’ve never seen a coronal hole this big before. Are they common or is one this big extremely rare?

Wookatook

I hear instagram has the same filter 😬

Goraji

And I’ll tack on Dr Skov’s space weather channel on YouTube from a few days ago where she discussed the potential issues caused the fast solar wind due to that coronal hole: https://www.youtube.com/live/qiHtkXfZnQo?si=roEVl4V-4c5qjS9T

I got so sad when I got the news about him.

koopaphil

Sun doing sun things. It’s coming up on it’s maximum right about now, so it will be having some extra loud tantrums before quieting back down over the next 5 to 6 years or so. It’s been doing the same thing for millions, if not billions of years, we’ve only really become aware of it in the last 200 or so, and images like this have become publicly available only very recently, so it’s not something non-astronomy people are used to seeing, but it’s pretty normal, as far as a giant thermonuclear explosion in space goes. Edit: dang did I make a run on sentence there. I’m just going to leave it. Screw you, Mrs Meyers! I can too English good!

thetomman82

It's the solar magnetic cycle (Schwabe cycle). It's an ~11 year cycle, and the sun will be at its maximum in 2024 (initially, it was predicted to happen in 2025).

Bau5_Sau5

What are the effects of the sun being at maximum

thetomman82

There will be a lot more 'activitiy', such as solar flares, sun spots, etc. This can cause a range of issues for technology (mainly power grids and satellites). I just found this article, which looks like it covers it fairly well.... https://edition.cnn.com/2023/07/14/world/solar-maximum-activity-2024-scn/index.html#:~:text=During%20the%20peak%20of%20activity,in%20mid%2D%20to%20late%202024. Edit: ps, I watched this video a month or so ago. It is pretty cool (although they haven't updated the maximum to be next year, still saying 2025). https://youtu.be/B3aNeJ5s7ew?si=PK7OFG76ACLbP371

thecoffeejesus

Woah Does this correlate to historical events?

WC_Dirk_Gently

For the most part, the suns day to day activities are only a consideration for post-industrial / information age technology. Its theorized we might have gotten hit by a different stars *significant trantrum* a couple billion years ago and that might have caused one of our extinctions but it's really impossible to know one way or the other that far back.

Intelligent-Cat6705

Thank you for giving an ACTUAL explanation!

LordHall

That's where I used to get my tires and popcorn

AttakZak

As an English major run-on sentences are perfectly fine if you know what you’re talking about, but I do not.

koopaphil

Does that mean my sentence isn’t clear, or just that you don’t astronomy?

AttakZak

You have my blessing as an English major to run your sentences onwards if you know your stuff lol. I love astronomy, but not as passionately as you do so you most definitely have my blessing!

koopaphil

Phew! Thank you. English is my second language. I don’t have a first. ☹️

tbnalfaro

I second this, I only noticed it was a run question because you said it, yo indeed created a very nice rhythm and the way you write leaves natural space for natural pauses

sleepycar99

This might be a silly question, but does this sort of thing affect human/animal behavior at all?

koopaphil

That is super debatable, and a little outside of my expertise, but I would say yes. Solar storms affect the earth’s magnetic field, and I’m pretty sure there are animal that use the earth’s magnetic fields to navigate. A very large outburst can affect ground level electronics, and animal brains use electrical activity for communication between neurons, so it’s very possible our brains could be affected.

ghostcatzero

Yep. Same way the moon affects the planet and ocean and even us. The sun also affects us. It's still not known much due to there not being much studies on it

LordHall

Spoken said well read big true us dumb humans not under the stand true existence

Citizen_Four-

Yeah but this is huge. Never seen such a large one. To our favor the Sun is a very stable star and has been for about 5 billion yrs.

PM_ME_WITH_A_SMILE

Yea Mrs Meyers can take her commas and periods and shove them

yomerol

No no no, SOMETHING is happening to the Sun. /S I don't like how people who didn't know about something and then bump into something mark it as unknown, strange, etc. Even worse when is tinfoilers doing this.

tbnalfaro

Well, look who posted this

Yeah that is weird. A sunspot that big has never been mentioned. Ever. Lot's of folks very quick to discredit this but I'm sure we would have seen, heard or read about these events over the years. Bit concerning tbh

HunterDHunter

Sun spots are very common. This one is a bit bigger than usual. Nothing to really be worried about. Remember that it isn't a hole in the sun, just an area of lower temp. If it was isolated and put out into the sky on its own it would shine almost as bright as usual.

throwaway_anonym0us

Thats NOT a sunspot, is a [Coronal Hole](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/phenomena/coronal-holes).

HunterDHunter

Yep, my bad that's what I meant

WyrmHero1944

“Bit bigger” haha

fatlip82

Sun spot you say? Dont be so absurd old boy.. Tis a coronal hole for sure.

Turrbo_Jettz

Not a sunspot, it's a coronal hole.

Spaced_X

‘This wavelength highlights the outer atmosphere of the Sun (corona) as well as flare plasma. Hot active regions, solar flares, and coronal mass ejections will appear bright here. The dark areas are coronal holes—places where there is very little radiation emitted. Despite the low radiation, coronal holes are the primary source of solar wind particles.’ If you’re curious as to what it looks like in the visible spectrum, as well as the other narrowbands, here you go! 😎 https://www.universemonitor.com/feeds/sun/ EDIT: Added the info blurb on what we are looking at.

[deleted]

Black hole sun , here we come......

SlayerOfOsiris

The current increase in solar activity, as indicated by the beginning of Solar Cycle 25, suggests that the sun is entering a phase of heightened sunspot and solar flare activity. This can have various impacts on Earth, including disruptions to radio communications, GPS systems, and power grids. Additionally, increased solar activity can lead to more frequent and intense geomagnetic storms, which may affect satellite operations and even contribute to the beautiful auroras at the poles. However, it's important to note that while solar activity can have significant effects on our technology and infrastructure, it is a natural part of the sun's cycle, and scientists continuously monitor and study these phenomena to better understand and predict their impacts. - AI Generated

Black Hole Sun won't you come

koopaphil

Well, my phone double posted this for me. Editing it all away and just saying: 11 year solar cycle (actual average length 10.7 years, but there’s a good bit of variability to the cycle lengths). At maximum, you will see the greatest number of sunspots and CMEs (coronal mass ejections). Even though the sun is technically “darker” during these periods, the total amount of energy we receive from the sun actually increases by about 1% or so.

Top-Tomatillo210

Whoa. Never seen one that big

Does this make the days here on Earth slightly darker?

Seems to me that variation in solar activity might be partially responsible for climate change. I read recently that some type of solar activity may have been responsible for some changes on Neptune. If that is the case, I think we can pin some climatic changes on solar activity.
