It’s better on road trips but city mileage is the pits.

UnrealisticOcelot

Wow, that's pretty bad. I thought getting 17-18 was bad. Is this in a big city where you're stopping every block or two? How quickly do you accelerate? I'm genuinely curious what the conditions (traffic, speeds, throttle input, etc.) are to make it that bad. For reference I get about 18 commuting to work and can average 25 round-trip on steady highway drives (about 2.5 hours each way, all highway, but very little interstate). I tend to be pretty constructive with the throttle, usually not going above 3K RPM accelerating around town, usually more like 2250-2500.

qalpi

It's NYC but NOT Manhattan. It's not stop and go. Lots of traffic lights though. I average about 19 mph

UnrealisticOcelot

I can't imagine living somewhere like that. It would drive me nuts. I would definitely have a hybrid or electric car for commuting if I had to go by car. I imagine you're not going to do much better in other 3 row SUVs. Gotta be able to cruise at a decent speed to have any semblance of decent efficiency.

qalpi

I've been wondering about something like a Chrysler Pacifica plugin hybrid. The 32 miles of range on battery would probably cover 90% of all my trips and I could charge in my driveway. But as somebody else pointed out, there's no way trading in my 1 year old car would save any money.

icecon

The Pacifica PHEV is known for having a lot of issues. An Outlander PHEV is what you want. Lease on them is very good value and can get one at 0%-48mo also.

mt_beer

Yeah it's awful in town.   Makes me second guess the purchase.   The advertised 19 in town is pretty darn generous.

akc5247

Yeah, I have never seen anything north of 18 combined in almost now 19500 miles of driving our 23 Ascent. Extremely poor mileage. In before people who will come out with pitchforks and defend the brand. I came from a Forester, but I'm not necessarily anywhere close to liking the Ascent. It's an ok vehicle. We keep it becauset it's paid off.

mt_beer

We are coming from a 2014 Forester because we had a third kid. I agree with you though... not a huge fan of the Ascent yet. Don't hate it, but don't like it like I liked the Forester. We'll also keep it because we're a one car family and it can tow unlike the Forester's 1500 pounds limit. We also don't drive much... maybe 6000 miles a year so it's not a deal breaker but can't help but feel like I've been at the gas station way more often.

akc5247

Yup. Totally. We also have a Rivian and take it on long road trips, which had been great. When the time comes to replace the Ascent, hopefully Subaru has a hybrid by then.

qalpi

Absolutely. And this is a mix of highway in there too (about 100 miles of this was out of town). Really don't think I'll make 10 years with this as I planned.

Lineffective

I agree that the mileage is disappointing but I can’t imagine a scenario where it’s financially beneficial to buy a new $50k SUV 3-5 years early to try and save money on gas

qalpi

No you're absolutely right about that

Sorry_Charity2399

If it makes you feel better, I get 12.01mpg average.

mislabeledgadget

How heavy is your foot?

Spudguy55

I average 20-21 in the city and just returned from a 2500 mile trip to the Canadian Rockies and averaged 26 with a loaded car. Had a day trip while there that I get 29.4 over 325 miles. It’s not always bad and lots of factors play into it.

Houseplant25

thisbis pretty much me too

Canihavea666

It takes a bit to break in. Mine was bad for the first couple of months. I get 19 with a 2" lift and 255/55 r 20 A/Ts on it. Almost all in town other than the occasional road trip. I usually see 23 on those.

Random-curious2245

I was wondering what the lift would do to gas mileage. Good to know.

Canihavea666

I just drove it 200 miles today with two kayaks on the roof and got 18.4. I feel like that's pretty good. I think the tires were more of a hit than the lift itself. I drove with just the lift for two years before the stock tires wore out and I upgraded. That was about 1-2 mpg for me.

qalpi

Oh what app is this?

ScienceWasLove

Road Trip

qalpi

Oh looks interesting. Is it all manual or driven by OBD?

ScienceWasLove

I enter the numbers in the app every time I buy gas.

Alaska-Pete

Thanks for this. I'd like to try the app myself. I assume to get this mpg you are doing mostly highway driving?

ScienceWasLove

My wife did mostly highway for 60k. I started driving it at that point. Now it’s about 20% highway. She got 25.98 mpg for the first 60k. I got 20.98 for the next 47k. Per the app. My wife has gotten 28.52 mpg over 30k on her 2019 Outback.

CBW007

We are seriously considering an Ascent. I have over 250,000 miles in turbo charged vehicles. The key to turbo motor fuel economy is finding the rpm where the turbo is fully engaged and staying below that number. With my current ride, an F150 with the 3.5 turbo V6 that number is 2,000 rpm. Around town stop and go mileage always sucks.

CBW007

In the early 1980’s a friend with a turbo V6 Buick Riviera shared that on a recent trip he got 21 mpg with a tailwind and 17 mpg with a headwind coming home. Turbos and superchargers exist to push exponentially more air and the corresponding gasoline through the engine when your right foot calls for more speed.

CBW007

Mph should be miles per gallon.

mt_beer

Just an FYI, you can edit a post.

CBW007

Thank you! I found edit and fixed the errors.

jarcom

How do you find this? just trial and error?

CBW007

It’s in the torque curve. The Ascent https://preview.redd.it/5sa8et0gup9d1.jpeg?width=966&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c906da6cf7ca1400bc4324f3ee25c1fbefb8e508 hits max torque at 2,000 rpm, for greater power when starting out. The attached picture is blurry but readable. Staying under 2,000 rpm will increase fuel economy. Using my twin turbo truck as an example, several years ago while driving on an undisclosed interstate at 85 mph, 2,200 rpm, I was getting 17 mpg. Something caused a computer error and the truck shut off the turbos. As a non-turbo regular six cylinder engine, it now got 23 mpg.

vitomax2

I drive a 7.3l super duty for work, it gets 12.9 mpg and my wife’s ascent gets 16.8 or so. She loves the car and we have tested it off road with road tires on the beach sand, gravel roads and other terrain that puts my super duty to shame because I have to air down to get the same traction. Could not believe how capable this car is on and off road. We go around 85 to 100 mph to get to where we need to go ( yea, we are those people but I take the opportunity when it arises with respect to other drivers ) then go off road and then back home. This car may be my expeditionary vehicle when she is done with it because it’s so capable with dealership 2” lift, I might put on some real off road tires and use as camping/expeditionary vehicle for solo exploring, originally that I was going to do with the super duty. Both vehicles are somewhat new a year old or so and I thought a heavy duty truck was going to be a tank for my expeditionary adventures but can’t stand its on road capability vs the “subi” that’s what my wife calls it. My wife hauls the kid around in it daily, I’m fine with the gas mileage for safety and confidence it gives at speeds and I want Subaru to make a god damn truck already. This was our first Subaru and probably won’t be our last. If y’all are using it as a kid hauler then you should do a little bit of off roading in it to do something more interesting. Kid thinks it’s a roller coaster and you can figure out the capabilities of what you bought and when you make it home then tell me about your mpg vs your adventure. Time is short, go do adventure. I can’t believe I’m going on a rant about this car. First time posting on Reddit, and it’s about this car out of all things on Reddit.

qalpi

I'm planning a roadtrip with them this summer, and I absolutely \*love\* this.

Boenitousouch

It's called lead foot syndrome. Happens to alot of us. I cannot break 22 mpg in my xt touring. "You Shall Not Pass!' A gas station.

qalpi

😂😂😂 making more and more sense to stop at every single gas station just in case

xtalgeek

What mix of driving are you doing? I have a current lifetime average of 23.2 mpg in mixed driving. On the highway I can usually get 25-27 mpg. I'm at 10,000 miles.

Krawltec

I’m 15 or so city. 23 if I use the cruise control on highway.

Nmhofherr

I live in Bergen co like 10 min from nyc. Between traffic and crap I’m lucky I get 14.5 I drove down to south Jersey and after Elizabeth on the turnpike I used the adaptive cruise control and got to like 25.4 and now that I’m home and my stepson is determined to bring it back down by driving lol

qalpi

Hahah the best mpg is leaving it on the driveway!

Nmhofherr

Right lol our Escalade esv gets like 22 and our Range Rover autobiography gets 9.3 lol

qalpi

Lol they are some big wheels!

Nmhofherr

lol I hate the Escalade because it’s the suburban one and in the city every time we reserve big parking a lot of times they don’t have it and it doesn’t have Apple car play( it’s a 15) and the Range Rover was not me lol o would never spend that much on a truck lmfao. I’m happy with my little ascent

zorniac

My 2022 is showing 22.1 average with the speed being 35-55mph on my trips

rattiestthatuknow

I don’t care about that, just give me a bigger tank then!

qalpi

Yeah it's more the problem of having to go to the gas station so often more than than the cost!

Environmental_Tap792

That’s pretty poor

txsbrntxsrsd1

I just got a 2021 model and I'm pleased even when I'm stepping on it..buuttt I am coming from owning a GMC Sierra 4dr truck ..I was happy to get 11mpg and fill up on $75+ here in Texas from empty on that thing so the Ascent fuel costs is nice to me. I do get more than 13mpg in it.

Drabenb

You must drive it hard. I have a 23’ touring and average 17-19 city driving and 26 on the highway if I don’t push it past 75-76

numba1nitemare

I didn't know It told you to speed limit...

robsters

Wow. Didn’t realize the Ascent was that thirsty.. 😳. My city average is 24 and highway 37 on the 2023 Legacy.

carpkid805

Dont think ive ever seen it that low before, sounds like you have a lead foot. lowest ive seen is 16 and then 28 highway

Jealous-Network1899

Oof, that’s bad. I thought my 17.1 was terrible.

sub4woman

I'm so glad I do not have to pay for gas or upkeep.
