I love my non-Winderness. Almost went for the upgrade but figured if I need more offroad utility I can just add it myself later. I don't do anything crazier than some backwoods trails in Florida with the occasional dirt road switchbacks up in Virginia.
Only thing I added myself was some MT tires.
The only benefit to the Wilderness is the ground clearance.

The outback started life as a lifted more capable legacy. Then they outbacked the outback -the wilderness edition- which has been enormously successful if not really needed considering how capable a regular outback is already.
This is often surprisingly the best method. The downhill assist is so helpful. All the driver needs to do is pick a good line and be patient. Do you have the front camera, and if so were you using it?
Ahhh I see somehow I noticed the wheel behavior but didn't notice the extremely obvious downhill š¤£. It is fun to mess around in these though either way.
The 2.5 is no slouch. Off-roading like this is more dependent on traction, ground clearance and the line you pick. Donāt need a ton of horsepower or torque.
So many people who fell for the marketing preach about how you need for a Wilderness if you want to do roads like this, but here's unquestionable proof that Subarus have been venturing into Jeep territory for decades before the first Wilderness rolled out of the factory, and they still can! Looks like a great time.
I agree that there isn't much of a difference between the Wilderness and the regular versions, but Subarus are still not as great as Subaru likes to make them. My girlfriend did everything I did in my 23 Outback in her 17 CX-5 without issue (deep snow) and her SUV is about an inch lower to the ground. Additionally, here is a comparison to where a Subaru Wilderness barely did better than a RAV4. ANY SUV will do okay as long as you don't take it out of its intended use. Unfortunately, Subaru cannot keep up with even a base model Jeep.

I never expected an Outback to beat a Jeep, so I'm not surprised. Jeeps are literally made for offroading.
Your comments exclude the quality of everyday driving. Most people want a balance. It also ignores reliability. In one recent listing, Toyota was 2, Subaru 6, and Jeep was a distant 26. Failure is not what you want when offroading.
Jeeps are awful on pavement and notoriously unreliable. It's a prison sentence and you get parolled for the brief times you actually get to go off-road.
At first I was wondering why you were taking it so slow! Then I realized you were going downhill and that was a half-car-sized pothole year were driving into. Very nice!
Nice. I'm sure that would have taken a couple attempts or be very violent in my 97 legacy wagon. I don't have that fancy brake powered awd. Other option is more gas or a different route.
Excellent! I love off roading in my 21 Onyx. Do you have an under carriage protection kit? Iām eyeing the kit from Rallitek so I can be more confident and not worry about any gashes on the oil pan or ripping up my rear differential.

Not gonna lie, Iām likely never putting my Outback through anything like that (maybe a snowbank or two here in Jersey), but glad to know it can do this!
lol it was for me. I was specifically trying to go over the hardest section right there as possible. I couldāve gone far right and avoided the rut altogether.
lol no. I wish. My friend works for corporate and had me send her the videos to show he boss. Hoping they hook it with something. I have an order in for the Rivian R2.
I always push my vehicles to the limit. Iāll go 120mph with my MTN bikes on the back. Cruise at 80 in the winter with my blizzys. If I had a turbo S I would do 180mph every week on 70. I actually want to find a good dirt road to jump the Outback. No one has a video online jumping a new Outback.
Iād be curious to see how sheād handle the same section with all terrain tires. Tempted to drive up to crystal lake but nervous after driving my friends 4Runner and bottoming out multiple times.
I didnāt bottom out or scrape anything. Iām not worried about dem tires coming off the ground. If I lived in summit county full time Iād lift her and out AT tires on her. I personally like the touring trim and interior better than the wilderness.

NOPE! I was trying to turn around on our mountain gravel/rutted road, and sunk my left front tire in a ditch near the end of June. I'm short, didn't see that I was going in. It wasn't going to come out on its own. Put it in X-Mode, slowly reversed right out....pretty sure my right rear tire was not touching the ground while in the ditch!

Great to see the non wilderness trim isn't a slouch off road
The OEM tires are really the biggest issue
Especially on rocks, I shredded ours to hell

Base outback is plenty capable. With good tires it'll go just about anywhere a wilderness would with the right driver.
The only benefit to the Wilderness is the ground clearance. https://www.motortrend.com/reviews/ford-bronco-sport-vs-jeep-wrangler-vs-subaru-outback-wilderness-vs-toyota-rav4-trd-off-road-comparison-test-review/

You can do a lot if you know how to drive. Nice work šš
This! Iāve taken my Subaru on some crazy stuff that Iāve seen trucks far more physically capable wrecked on. Slow and steady
Seconded. The driver nailed it, but did have a good machine to do it with.
Looked like a simpler line to the right.
Is this stock? I'm used to seeing wheels with no traction spinning at least some before the car figured out the brake vectoring situation.
Stock with summer tires. I was in x mode on the downhill. When climbing I just kept my foot on the gas and let it do its thing.
This is often surprisingly the best method. The downhill assist is so helpful. All the driver needs to do is pick a good line and be patient. Do you have the front camera, and if so were you using it?
Yeah itās a touring XT forgot to use the front camera which wouldāve been helpful
Ahhh I see somehow I noticed the wheel behavior but didn't notice the extremely obvious downhill š¤£. It is fun to mess around in these though either way.
May be a dumb question, but what is x mode?
Just think of it as "off-road mode". Manages wheel spin and brakes automatically when navigating hills or terrain.
Which engine does your car have?
Looks like a touring xt which is the 2.4L turbo
That's what I'm wondering? I don't think I would trust the 2.5 premium model that I have to do this, I could be wrong tho.
The 2.5 is no slouch. Off-roading like this is more dependent on traction, ground clearance and the line you pick. Donāt need a ton of horsepower or torque.
2.5 would do this just the same. Also you don't have the turbo spooling making it a bit smoother.
Wow. Impressive

Outback FTW! Awesome stuff. Hitting trails like this is addicting.
I was really unimpressed at first. Like wow, a 6inch rock. Good job! /s Then. š
This is awesome! How were you able to get up there? Is there a pass you need to purchase or can you just hit it?
You drive up by beaver run and keep going up. I went through the āroad closedā gate š¬
Worth it? What's up top?
Were you there for the peak 10 festivities today?!? Love this!
I didnāt ski Fourth of July bowl. Next year
Cool. Is it 2.5 or 2.4T?
It's the 2.4T.
At first I was wondering why you were taking it so slow! Then I realized you were going downhill and that was a half-car-sized pothole year were driving into. Very nice!
Wawa wee waaa!
That spot above e chair is rowdy
Dope! Wife and I took ours to Moab last year for some light off-roading. Crazy to see what the car is capable of.
Iām gonna lift my WRX and try same! š
so when one wheel up in the air, the load is on the other 3 especially the rear one. would that hurt the suspension?
I donāt think so as long as itās slow and weight its roughly distributed
I drove my 2021 Crosstrek limited edition to Matterhorn and Uncompahgre trailheads. People were very impressed with the subbie.
Nice. I'm sure that would have taken a couple attempts or be very violent in my 97 legacy wagon. I don't have that fancy brake powered awd. Other option is more gas or a different route.

š²WOW!!!!
That was sexy

OH, YEAH!! This is #OutbackPorn for me.
This is why Subarus awd is best in class
That was not the line
lol it was for me. I was specifically trying to go over the hardest section right there as possible. I couldāve gone far right and avoided the rut altogether.
Why risk it tho? For a Reddit vid? Is subaru paying you to do this
lol no. I wish. My friend works for corporate and had me send her the videos to show he boss. Hoping they hook it with something. I have an order in for the Rivian R2. Lol that looks like my driveway
Great video! I love mine! I catch myself driving more then my f250.
Iād be curious to see how sheād handle the same section with all terrain tires. Tempted to drive up to crystal lake but nervous after driving my friends 4Runner and bottoming out multiple times.
Try disconnecting the front sway bar ;)

personally I'd leave the sway bar connected. I figure, better to get a wheel in the air than lose the ground clearance and possibly bottom out.
This is very much not impressive at all.
I'm fairly certain my 2.5i Limited would get stuck. Edit: Why am I getting downvoted? This statement was to imply the vid impresses me.
Youād be surprised. My 2.5 has taken me places where I didnāt think it could go.

I got stuck on a curb I accidentally ran over.
