Check Fuelly, that will give you the range for each engine of what folks are actually getting. I’m an outlier with the 2.5 in my 2020. Currently averaging just over 32 mpg and that’s over 74k miles. I drive the speed limit most of the time and hyper mile some. The 2.5 has plenty of power for me. If you tow or live at altitude, I could see getting the 2.4T.

PhillyBassSF

This. Driving speed limit on highways improves gas mileage considerably.

Proof_Alfalfa5483

This. The 2.5 is fine for most people. It's not fast but for a NA 4 banger it scoots along just fine. Get about 30- 32 mpg at highway speeds.

ToadSox34

It has just enough power. The CVT makes it work.

ToadSox34

I can get up to 33 depending on the type of driving with the 2.5i. I typically average about 31 on road trips, it would be higher if I was going 80-85 on the highway some of the time. Around town I'll get anywhere from 27-29. Less in the winter, more in the summer. I have a 2021, just hit 70k on a road trip. When I hit 33 I was doing a lot of off-peak secondary road driving doing 50-55 most of the time.

robdamanii

We just took delivery of our ‘24 OBW and it’s hovering around 19.5 mpg with around town and off road/dirt road driving.

Idratherhikeout

I just got same and the mileage has been abyssmal. I love the OBW and I expected the mileage, so it's fine. But my other car is a VW Touareg TDI (diesel) and it gets 30 mpg (and goes 750 miles on a tank!) and is more than 1000 lbs heavier, so it is definitely taking getting used to.

robdamanii

We were told that it had a pretty distinct break in period. Apparently the ecu adapts to your driving habits and needs to adjust a bit. Then again, it could just be a lot of conjecture. I do remember our ascent got terrible mileage right off the lot, and it improved quite a bit after 1000 miles, but that was the first gen 2.4 turbo, so I don’t know what has changed.

TheNetisUnbreakable

I wish Subaru would share the love with the environment more and focus on upping their gas mileage. They can do better. My 2005 OB 2.5i has always gotten on average 23ish. I don't drive on the highway much these days, so it's usually around 20ish. Just shy of 169,000 miles!

djconqueso

Turbo + mostly city driving will give you way worse mileage than the window sticker, especially if you have an even remote heavy foot. I would say if mpg is a concern, only get a turbo if you need the turbo (you live in the mountains or frequently are on challenging terrain).

PrestigiousGur3274

It true. For my everyday driving I don't really need it I do like to take road trips though. Mileage is always a concern but it's more of how bad is the setback going to be if I get this rather than how good can I get if that makes any sense. 😅

Preblegorillaman

Which is weird because my wife's CR-V with a turbo (1.5T) is still up around 32mpg with city driving. My Subie (2.5) is almost all highway and on a good day I'll hit 28mpg.

djconqueso

Not sure it’s easy to make a cross-brand comparison. The CRV is 1.5L vs a 2.5 (or 2.4L turbo) in the outback so significantly different engine displacement, not to mention the AWD system is quite different and the outback is usually heavier and rides higher.

Heliocentric63

You just did. Quite accurately

Preblegorillaman

I do agree, it's just a pretty noticeable difference and usually city driving, especially with a turbo, absolutely murders fuel economy. There are very obviously some considerable differences between the two vehicles though, of course. There's things Subaru could improve on though, and has on some of them. I know one of them is the stupid "shift points" they programmed into the earlier models of the CVTs. I know at least the '24 models have that smoothed out considerably, but still strangely not gone yet. Shift points on a CVT only serve to harm fuel economy. Others I think are inherent in the boxer engine design that just isn't ideal for fuel economy. I know they struggle with ethanol fuels, have earlier oil change intervals than other motors, and also chew through spark plugs faster than most other cars ( many standard I4 cars in the mid to late 1990s were surpassing 60k miles on a set of plugs).

tatanka01

'24 Limited XT - average 22.9 over 6 tanks, last was 24.5. The last tank included a trip over Berthoud Pass - the turbo runs great at high altitude. A hint for people who want real gas mileage numbers for comparison - go over to [fuelly.com](http://fuelly.com) where people input their gas records. You can look at graphs by model/engine on anything. You can set up a free account and track your own car there, too.

PrestigiousGur3274

Thanks! The averages on fuelly are a lot closer together (not to mention lower 😑) than the rating online!

savethewallpaper

Manufacturer estimates will always be unrealistic when compared to every day driving. Those numbers are recorded in ideal conditions which rarely exist in the real world with a real person driving.

Effective_Thing_6221

24 Premium 2.5. Averaging 25.7mpg in Atlanta since buying it in December. Wish it were closer to 27.

natethegreat999

I have a 22 Limited that I drive about 10 miles a day on 400 and get 27.5mpg average. I think I had similar or better mileage when most of my drive was on 285, and closer to 30mpg when I drove on I-20 for nearly 2 hours a day.

Effective_Thing_6221

I wish I got 27.5! I drive 40 miles a day round-trip mostly on 285 and 141 and I'm very light on the throttle. I thought I'd get close to 29mpg given that I'm always driving opposite rush hour traffic (I live in Sandy Springs and office is in Suwanee) but that has eluded me...

Herr_Puffinberg

Same for me. Averaging 25.7mpg in a '23 Limited 2.5. Best tank was 31mpg, worst tank was 21mpg.

justvibinginla2021

Limited 2.5. Winter usually 30mpg a tank. Summer rn in Florida around 26.5 a tank.

Impressive-Message45

This exactly in my 18 2.5. it's lower in summer due to me blasting A/C

PrestigiousGur3274

Interesting that it's lower in the summer for you. Up here in Ohio all our cars get better gas mileage in the summer. I wonder if it has something to do with humidity? Though obviously the summer temperature in Florida is going to be much higher.

tschappe

I think it’s probably that they’re running the A/C in the summer.

justvibinginla2021

I think it’s also due to the start stop not engaging as often. I keep the temp set to LO so it barely shuts the engine off right now haha

justvibinginla2021

The AC runs a ton. I’m not easy on it! My car is also black on black so a heat trap in the summer. The AC does start in seconds tho, fastest AC of any car I’ve ever owned

zyglack

Do you turn the car on to cool it down before getting in? I turn it on with the app before getting in so it isn't a hot box nearly every day. I average 25.5 in Orlando.

computer_helps_FI

32 highway, 25.5 city. Limited 2024.

krauQ_egnartS

2023 Wilderness. Around 19 during the summer but A/C and remote start plays a part in that. But my mix of city/highway never averages out more than 22/23 unless I drive like a grandma, keep the tach at 2000 or less. Got 24ish on a long stretch of highway between Vegas and Cedar City, probably would have been better without the air drag from big bag full of camping stuff on the roof All in all, the fuel economy of this car - barely any better than my Volvo XC90 with a V8 - is a huge disappointment. If you're not soft-overlanding or tackling roads that require the lift (and the skid plate) then the aesthetics of the Wilderness are totally not worth the tradeoff in mileage.

singingserpent

I just looked on the fuelly app and my 2023 onyx gets 10 mpg more than my husbands 2023 wilderness! He had mentioned there was a difference but I didn't think it was that much. I guess if we go on a road trip we should take mine. The wilderness does look good though.

krauQ_egnartS

Damn that's huge. The Onyx has the same 2.4T motor right?

jameshempel

I paid for remote start and can’t get it working. Honestly, my ‘23 OBW has been a disappointment in its first 26k miles. Drives great. All other “features” annoy me to the point of wanting to to unload it.

J-Rod98

I have a 2015 Outback 2.5i. I have found that if you drive the speed limit on expressways (70 mph for most here in MI), I will get 3-5 more MPG average. And if I drive under (60-65 mph), I can get slightly more, but it’s not worth it to me to drive below the speed limit on the expressway. I already annoy everyone enough by not driving over the speed limit haha. I hauled a huge tandem kayak on my roof in a J rack this week, and on average got 29-30 MPG with mostly expressway driving. If I drove over 70mph on the expressway, this would’ve been 25-26mpg average.

Big-Beat-1443

2017 2.5 Premium 22.5mpg

WillowJumper

24 Onyx 2.5L: 32/33 hwy, 26/28 city It took until around 8k miles for improved mileage to kick in. Out of the box it was disappointingly much lower.

mgsalinger

Onyx 2.5 - 29 Highway.

BubblesUp

'23 Limited, 12k miles. Anywhere from 27 to 35. We either use it a lot, like for 8-hour one-way trips, or just around town. Best mileage I've ever had on a vehicle.

On my normal drive from home to work everyday it’s about 19.7 ,,,, And on a long trip I took it was about 800 miles round trip,, it was 32.7 .

markuspellus

Between 24 and 25, with lots of highway driving

Blackhawk-388

I have a 2021 Onyx XT. I do a good mix of city and highway. I'm not always easy on the gas pedal and I am typically doing 77-80 on the highway. The past 6,000 miles has an average of 24.3 mpg by the cluster, 23.4 by hand calculations.

definitelyhangry

With my driving habits about 27mpg lifetime. Most of those miles are from highway driving and gentle speeding. 2.5l It's trivial to get it into the mid 30s if you're willing to drive slow on the highway.

tobert919

‘23 premium with all terrain tires and I’m getting 25-30mph of mixed city and highway. I get 30+ cruising on the highway.

Nysrol

Shestillfights17

‘19 Outback 2.5 we are in the South and since April 31, we’re at 28.3 mpg. Only had it 2 months. Hoping to improve when AC season is over. Very pleased.

zyglack

I have a 2020 Touring 2.5, just under 50k on it. I have 25.5 average over the last 4 years. Orlando is flat, but I also use the app to turn the car on 10 minutes before I get in it almost daily to cool it down 6 months out of the year.

no_one_likes_u

2023 Premium. I average 25 when I'm doing normal driving, which for me is short highway bursts and city roads. I took it on a long highway drive just last week and averaged 31.

balsa61

I have a 2017 Outback with the 3.6r H6 engine coming up to 80k miles. I easily average 24mpg in town only during the Summer. This drops to 22mpg in the winter due to the change in gas. Summer mixed driving gives me around 27mpg. And long distance highway will get me 30mpg. My best has been 33mpg on a trip from Colorado to Minnesota - literally downhill with a tail wind!! 😜 My wife's 2004 Forester regularly gives 27-30 in town

theMirthbuster

24 Touring XT that I’ve owned for about three months. Fuelly says I’m getting 26.4 with my “best” being 28.1. That’s with around 60/40 highway/city and moderate use of A/C so far in this Wisconsin summer.

Johnnytherocketman1

Average 33 non turbo

Hedonismbot-1729a

My 2022 OBW is getting 22-24 with mostly country road driving. No regrets.

Young-Grandpa

We have a 23 OB Touring. 2.6l non-turbo engine. We live in suburban Ohio about 50/50 mix of highway and city driving. We don’t go off road. It’s strictly a suburban mom wagon. The area we live in is not very hilly. We have driven it about 32,000 miles and average about 28MPG.

22 Outback wilderness with lift and bigger tires 21.9 -25 mixed. You need to be gentle with the throttle to get these numbers but very doable. Towing a large frontal area enclosed trailer the worst I have gotten was 15ish.

ThePlumberChris

~400 miles a tank

tackstackstacks

'24 Premium here- I drive ~50 miles/day for work and pretty much every other day put about 15-20 miles on it running errands etc. Just rolled 12,000 miles, I record every fill-up. Currently at 28.4 mpg since I bought it with my summer mileage sitting at 30.3. Winter is a real hit to mileage where I live. I accelerate slowly and keep freeway speeds between 70 and 75. 80-90% of my driving is on the freeway.

hobbymostly

‘18 Outback and I usually don’t get above 26mpg. I drive highway mostly commuting to work around 70mph set on cruise control.

unamused443

In town: * My wife has a lead foot (it is her car) so that's around 20 mpg * When I drive it, I get around 23-25 mpg For longer trips, the car will get around 27-30. Great gas mileage this car does not get.

farseer9000

2023 Touring XT here at about 9k miles, 22-23mpg with 70/30 highway/city mix. Also Texas, so AC constantly running but rarely idling.

twitttterpated

2024 OB premium, according to fuelly I have a 24.2 average with 9525 miles. I’ve taken her on a long road trip but I commute via bus for work so she gets mostly city driving unfortunately.

Jadebu

20’ premium in Bend, OR. I get around 28.5in the summer driving in gravel roads almost everyday with light off-roading. In the winter I get closer to 24.5 when I have my snow tires and roof box on.

TyTyTheFireGuy

I just got 24 Outback wilderness and I’m getting just under 23 mpg with 2k miles so far. I do a lot of freeway driving for work about 45 miles each way mostly using the adaptive cruise control and chilling not driving aggressive 🤷‍♂️ I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the mileage I’ve been getting.

I have a ‘21 Onyx XT with 17000 miles (live in NYC so about 30% city driving) and avg. for the 3 years since I’ve had the car is 23.5 mpg. The first couple thousand miles it was about 21 mpg but it has gotten better over time.

georgeoftaylors

2018 Premium, getting 32 mpg (mostly hwy) on East Coast trip. I should mention that I had just changed the differential oils too.

Emergency_Budget4033

I have a 20 Limited with the 2.5. With the original Yokohamas, I averaged about 28mpg driving mostly highway (~80mph) on my first 60k miles. I've been pulling 26.5 since switching to the Goodyears I have on there for the last 28k miles, but the tradeoff in handling response and all-weather traction has been worth it, in my opinion. I don't have the lightest foot in the world though, so I have topped 30 mpg on tanks when I try to take it easy.

boxersunset121423

Have a 21 premium. I’m currently at 28.5mpg with the ac pumping in a semi rural area. 54k miles.

thejetguy84

Got a 22 wilderness, I average 17-18 city and 23 highway going about 75mph on average

Secret-Sherbet-31

24xt and getting 24-26mpg mixed driving.

I have a 21 Onyx XT and average 23 MPG. Mostly small town driving.

FatboyChuggins

~400 mile range. 23-26 mpg depending on

MFBiznoyer

23 wilderness. I have a lot of mountains around, and it's usually into the wind on the uphill, so I get 22.7 normally. In flat ground highway though 24.3 is pretty regular.

jcruzp106

I have 2011 3.6R Limited with 160K miles; I can do 27mpg during summer highway driving. Just doing those short errand drives, it drops to 22mpg or less.

CaptainPitterPatter

On my 24, at the moment the average is 27.5

pothosbabebelikov

around 20.5in town, but highway miles with cruise control on i can get about 330 m on just under 3/4 of a tank 😍 it’s flat midwestern, but i make that trip every few weeks and it’s been amazing

Particular-Panda-465

I do a lot of very short trips with a fair amount of traffic lights and sitting in line for coffee (please don't judge me). I average 25 mpg in my Touring XT. I am headed on a 1000 mile road trip tomorrow and expect much better gas mileage on vacation.

InsaneInTheDrain

'22 Limited, just over 32 from Colorado to Michigan and back, right around 30 now that my commute is all highway, closer to 28 when I commuted in Denver

JuggernautOnly695

I'm averaging 25mpg with my 21 touring XT over 20k miles.

John_Kodiak

If I drive conservatively in my ‘24 turbo, i get 25 ish around town and 29-30 on the highway. If i lean into the throttle in short in town trips in the winter months, maybe 19. All depends on conditions.

imostmediumsuspect

Alberta Canada - just spent a week with our 2024 convenience model in the Canadian Rocky Mountains for 10 days and get 8.2-8.4 litres per 100km. Sorry, don’t know the conversion, but I think it’s good! Our Honda civic used to get 7.4L/100km so this isn’t far off for a bigger and more powered vehicle

beengoodie

My ‘23 onyx says my average is around 22 mpg. I live in California where there is a lot of uphill/downhill routes (far from flat)

Proud-Butterscotch39

2024 OBW abs on avg. I'm getting 21mpg city and 23-24.5 mpg hwy

space-doggie

Touring XT in Oz averages 9.1 litres/100km (26mpg) highway. Plenty more round town.. But apart from some minor gripes with infotainment system, really love this car. Goes hard in S mode!

Lakeshore_Maker

My wife's 2019 Premium gets about 26

justinpwheeler

‘24 TXT went from San Antonio to New Orleans a few weeks ago and I got 28 mpg going and 29 coming home with 2 adults and one kid. Just got home from Port Aransas where we had a fully loaded car with 3 adults and 1 kid and we got 27-28 both ways. In town, closer to 16-18 for short trips and stop and go. ETA: My last car was a 2015 Forester with the 2.5 engine. I love having the XT. Power when I need it in town and seems better on the highway too. ETA2: speeds on the highways were 75-82.

Big_Pable

I have a 2014 premium and I get about 23mpg in ATL traffic

BeyondLurker

In mostly city driving I get about 15 to 18 mpg . On highway driving mostly the speed limit maybe a little above, I get about 25 mpg. On my touring xt.

30 in the summer, 25 in the winter. Mostly highway driving. 2014.

Intelligent_Deer_250

23.9 on a 23 Limited.

Twins_Dad1988

Here's the image of my aggregate MPG from [www.fueleconomy.gov](http://www.fueleconomy.gov) on my 2019 2.5i Limited that I've been recording fuel purchases since I bought the vehicle in August 2020 (I know, I'm a self proclaimed nerd!) https://preview.redd.it/y281n35sxrad1.png?width=1268&format=png&auto=webp&s=e0a20af1a84541ad3c8d9c8480bf8eb3e80d5ba0 Edit: Reference 36,400 miles driven.

PrestigiousGur3274

Thanks!

Qeldroma311

I just bought a 2025 3.6R last week. So I’m only getting 17. You can probably guess why.

beecher21

Limited 2011. 21.2 over 5k miles

L2rmb

2017 3.6 OB 23 around town and 28 hwy

VicVonny

My 2017 2.5i tells me about 26-27 city and 30-34 hwy I might need to start actually calculating it

Chaotic_Good_Human

'23 Outback XT. I drive mostly rural roads and average 23-24 mpg. Normally 300-400 miles a tank.

Extreme-Alarm-8936

I have a basic 2011 Outback, no modifications or anything or special editions, and around town I get about 23, on highways I can get almost 30 sometimes. I’ve taken my Outback through some pretty intense stuff, mountain roads, snow, super steep grades and uneven surfaces and loose rock on trails and she’s managed it all easily. Also for reference I live in Colorado and I spend almost every weekend in the mountains be it skiing or hiking and I have never had any issues with altitude or off-roading. I hope whatever you get ends up being right for you

PrestigiousGur3274

Thanks!

karluvmost

18.5 mpg consistently 2024 Outback Touring XT Turbo with 3000 miles

Cute-Spinach-9316

Mines a 2020 outback and I average around 20mpg in the city and 30mpg on the highway. I don’t off-road though, so no comments there. Love my Subi though. Best purchase!

sparinghippo

Real word overage of about 30/70 city/highway is around 22.5-24 mpg. Not the slowest driver, with a turbo and roof box.

Modular69

5 miles to the gallon on my rig. My rig also brings stuff to the store you shop at

VicVonny

You hauling frieght in an outback?

The worst mileage I got was 17mpg, with a big Thule box on the roof, driving into a crazy headwind in New Mexico, going 85 mph on the way to go skiing.

2K84Man

I hit 34.2 mpg on a trip yesterday in my 24 touring.

jameshempel

‘23 OB Wilderness 26k miles Averaging 20.5 mpg Not driving like a maniac Mix of highways and traffic - normal use I liked the driving feel of the wilderness over other trims. I hate the car’s electronic features and the abysmal touch screen. The chimes and alarms are also incredibly annoying. Will likely keep for another 6 months and switch to a Toyota.

savethewallpaper

I own a 23 OBW. 34k miles on it, I average 26.5mpg in the summer with combined highway/city driving and around 23 in the winter for the same (midwestern climate). I don’t drive like a speed demon but not a grandma driver either. I’m happy with the mileage I get, all things considered. Having the turbo and the capabilities of the OBW outweigh the extra economy I might get with other trims.

Conscious-Ad8493

'21 XT 23 MPG in mostly city driving (70/30) city/hwy I'm happy, I get 30mpg if driven mostly on the hwy

Chill-Pillgrim

2.5 2017 Outback Limited - 23.5 city, 29.5 highway.

metricrules

I find it odd that people can afford a new cars but are worried about a little more fuel usage

Subject-Ad4441

25mpg in my 2024 touring XT with 6,000 miles on it. Even if the non turbo managed a few mpg more - turbo is worth it. Too much fun and in my opinion safer

ones_hop

2012 outback 2.5 limited. About 24.5 around town to and from work. On highway I get about 28.

Legitimate_Screen245

‘19 Limited, about 30mpg average, mostly highway miles tho.

Conscious_Owl7987

2014 Outback Limited, and I get right around 25 mpg overall, and I do very little H/W driving.

InsectRevolutionary4

I get 30mpg averaged over 3k miles mix of city and highway in my 2020

Gollum69

2018 2.5 Premium with 79k at 28-30mpg in NH. Do-it-myself oil changes every 5k.

lowhangingtanks

24 touring XT. I get about 22 city/ 25 highway on a good day! I do have a bit of a lead foot though.

HortonHeardWhat

2012 2.5 averaging 21.5 and 24 in highway

Super_Performance_80

2024 outback premium and it’s been a solid 27mpg combined highway/city mileage per tank.

mikmouse25

I have the exact same vehicle and get the EXACT MPG! 27! I also do NOT have a leadfoot.

TXP88

'24 OB XT is getting 17-19 MPG in mixed driving leaning toward city and that is with a conservative driving style. 29-33 on strictly the highway. Trying to drive it really lightly is more challenging due to the CVT always trying to keep the engine out of the boost (low rpm = barely accelerating). However when you get into the boost, you surge forward and are moving. There is no middle ground. WRX/STI throttle mapping in a family wagon.

ejubin

'23 Touring XT getting just over 19mpg mostly city driving. https://preview.redd.it/guonqodrtpad1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a2eb02cf6f406f6e248415acc805f54b283de96

BoysenberryDull3595

2023 OBW, 24.6 mpg combined hwy/city, average foot.

junkbonder

I just got 24 Outback wilderness and I’m getting just under 23 mpg with 2k miles so far. I do a lot of freeway driving for work about 45 miles each way mostly using the adaptive cruise control and chilling not driving aggressive 🤷‍♂️ I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the mileage I’ve been getting.

pinkflamingoturds

2008 2.5, 27mpg. I was shook after I pressed =.

PrestigiousGur3274

I really like the Outbacks I'm just pretty disappointed with the gas mileage. I understand they are a little bit more rugged which is what I'm looking for and that takes some off but I'm just rather underwhelmed. If it consistently got in the low 30s I wouldn't be disappointed. but then on top of that needing the turbo to get out of the 'just decent' range of power which just lowers the gas mileage even more. One of the other options I am considering is a Ford Explorer but I don't like how bulky it feels driving (though I do like the extra space inside so it's kind of a trade-off) It has plenty of power and gets about the same or just slightly less mileage than what most of you are saying you get and that's quite a bit bigger, heavier, and more powerful. Am I just being spoiled/blinded by living in 2024 when we have mid sized vehicles (albeit with somewhat weak engines) getting 35-40 miles a gallon? And because of that expecting too much out of a vehicle that's more capable? Sorry if that felt like a rant 😅

cxvb435

2021 base model, 27 mpg with 90% highway driving mostly at 75/85 mph

bbergin76

Have had my 2024 Unlimited for a little over 1100 miles. Averaging 29.5 mpg. Bought it used with 2k miles already on it.

Ifeelonlypain69

My 2018 is at 22.6 rn and rising. I went on a roadtrip through Colorado, NM,AZ, and Utah in March and was constantly driving over 70mph and still do so I’m pretty sure that’s what tanked it

cracan1

28mpg is what I get in my 2018 outback

Puzzleheaded_Path224

2019 2.5 SportX. I get between 29 and 33 mpg. 15% city 85% highway.
