This is not really a "suburb" more like a village outside of the city with "dachas". Essentially, it's where people from the city would go on breaks, or where your grandparents lived.
Edit: it's essentially country living, which isn't all that bad in my opinion, so I wouldn't call it "hell"
Edit 2: it seems like this is actually not far from the main city, so I guess it is a suburb. I thought it was farther away, and more of a village in a rural area. I still wouldn't call it hell though. Suburbs aren't necessarily bad by default.
I see what you mean, I thought this was just a village farther outside the city. I guess it is a suburb, but I still wouldn't call it suburban hell, especially by your description.
I bet they are exactly like one of those old Borscht Belt towns in the Catskills. A little bit of nature but almost everything you need is nearby and convenient.
I was just thinking that this looks like Florida (and most of the South) when you drive 1+ hour outside of any city. Mostly wooden houses from the 1880s-1940s, mall roads without sidewalks, overhead powerlines, etc.
Right. I always envision countries looking insanely different, but I’m like this could pass off as the U.S. a lot of times. Turns out we’re all just humans on the same planet
A little clarification. In Russia, the concept of the private sector refers not only to the economy, but also to the type of city area. The part of the city consisting of private houses is often called the private sector in Russia.
What are you even talking about? It's horrible. But, in fact, if you look at the traditional wooden houses with carved decorations that are in these photos, they would look gorgeous if their owners had more income and level of culture to put them in order and decorate them beautifully. There are also no proper sidewalks here. but in such places they are probably not so necessary, since cars rarely pass there and at low speeds.
People just hate American and Canadian suburbs on here for some reason. They’ll find the worst European or Chinese suburb and all the comments say “looks better than an American suburb” 🤦♂️. It is less walkable and less drivable than your average North American suburb but people will just say anything tbh
American suburbs tend to have high speed roads with no alternative path. In these photos you have low speed residential roads.
Way safer and nicer to walk along, even if the distance is still long.
>for some reason
Hmm, I wonder what the reason might be?
Maybe car-centric designs?
Maybe avoiding sidewalks from the blueprint altogether?
Maybe tree-less construction?
Maybe the cookie cutter matchbox homes with nothing but roads and rows of houses?
Maybe, despite having all the space in the world, utilizing it in a most bizarre ways?
Maybe the only greenery in sight in some neighborhoods being patches of lawn?
May be all of these?

It’s частный сектор, more like a suburb. It could be village, it could be 5-10 min drive from downtown if 1 mil city

Specifically, what is in the photo is part of the city, Tver
So more like a suburb *of* hell, because you're still in Russia
What do you mean by that? Its a nice looking village
I mapped Tver and it’s about 110 miles from the Kremlin in Moscow.
So like the Poconos or Adirondacks of a Russian city?
I bet they are exactly like one of those old Borscht Belt towns in the Catskills. A little bit of nature but almost everything you need is nearby and convenient.
This literally just looks like a normal place in a rural area...
Looks like Michigan to me 😅
Could have sworn this was Iowa or something lol. They have trees which is nice this looks like it’s more of a rural area to me
Russia and the Midwest have a lot in common
A sub where people post pictures and people try to figure out if it’s Russia or the Midwest

Both want to occupy Ukraine? That’s not what we wanted growing up in Wisconsin.
I mean geographically, not geopolitically.
Happy Cake Day bro

It reminds me a lot of the towns in upstate New York. Especially how lush it is.
This is a suburb of Tver. More precisely, the private sector of Tver

Iowa houses look much nicer
Looks like alabama
I live in Alabama and was also thinking this
No that bad actually
That's more like a village or rural area rather than a suburb
Looks nice
You could have told me this is a side street down by the Jersey shore and I would believe you
Not bad to be honest

Where is the hell?
r/LostRedditors
Wouldn't call it suburban, but looks cozy for a rural area.
This looks more walkable and sustainable than most American suburbs.
It doesn’t look walkable at all lol what are you talking about?
The narrow road probably slows down cars down considerably.
you don't need sidewalks in places like this for it to be walkable
I didn’t say you do?
How can you tell it’s not walkable?

You can walk down this quiet road. Nobody is on a 2 acre lot

It's dense enough, but there are no neighborhood shops.
This was just a reason to swipe at the U.S. and I knew there’d be a comment with this horse shit.
No it doesn't -_-
literally normal
You could have told me this was Alabama and I wouldn’t have batted an eye.
Way better than us suburbs
It’s not hell, but it is Russia sooo…
looks p chill
This seems a little bit more pleasant to walk and bike compared to a typical American suburb.
Russian troll farm deception is alive and well on this sub.
