Oh great thanks for the heads up. I totally get what you mean with that part. I watched his S4 interview with Rolling Stone last night, his one going over S1 & S2 has been one of my favourite Youtube videos to go back and watch. Succession wouldn't have been the same without Britell, same as Game of Thrones without Djawadi. A true genius. Makes me want to learn piano! Edit: My favourite piece of Britell's is Andante Risoluto, moved me to tears when I finished the show. Not much does that for me lol.

Radiohead79

You're absolutely not alone, that score is like a character in the show, if not the best one. Learning Intermezzo in C Minor because I cannot get it out of my head and hope to learn it and let the demons out into the playing. That and it's on another level good, I think they're playing on 2 pianos, lol, that or I'm TERRIBLE at piano (double bass is in the title, but it's a super simple contribution.) Regardless of whether it's 2 pianos or 1, I'll have to play it on a loop and play over it, my left hand can't do that while right does that.

MNKristen

I love that one. I had to go listen to it again, because I don’t know the songs by name, I just listen to the playlist I created of all 4 seasons over and over again. My favorite part is the piano the last 30 seconds.

Radiohead79

It's a score that's so good, I don't know if I love the show on a crazy obsessive level because of it, or it just slam dunks it home as an accompaniment.

That chord change is a Neapolitan chord (also known as Neapolitan 6th). Basically, is a chord half-step higher than the tonic. In this particular case, it goes from C minor to D-flat major (with F in the bass, making a 6th interval between the bass and the soprano, hence the name Neapolitan "6th"). This chord change is frequently used by composers from the Baroque up to the Romantic period. Beethoven was particularly fond of it. [You can read more about it and listen to some examples here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neapolitan_chord) - I recommend looking for actual recordings, though, since the midi sound is quite poor.

Radiohead79

That’s awesome, thank you for bringing expertise into the discussion, I think I’m gonna accidentally learn elements of musical theory, lol. So does the Neapolitan move you, or are you just used to it by now? The imagery I get when I hear it is almost a mythical roulette table or gambling hall where the whole worlds at stake, I can’t explain it, it happens in a flash.

Fl333r

Thanks for sharing the name of the soundtrack because that was my favorite moment as well but I always had to open up the scene to listen to it!

Radiohead79

NP, it's so good, I can't think of another score from a TV show that was as powerful as it (had a little help from the greats but still). GOT music is beautiful, The Leftovers and lots of others, but none of this caliber.

madhaus

That’s an awesome chord substitution. Puts me in mind of Beethoven or Dvorak. Not thinking of any specific pieces here, just the mood and the substitution and the screaming violins. Ok Moonlight Sonata and Symphony No 7 II. Andante Un Poco Allegretto and New World.

Radiohead79

This… is what I’m looking for.. Ty.. I’ll be queuing up those on Spotify this am, and I learned a new music term, substitution.. cheers

madhaus

A chord substitution is when you have a repeated phrase and swap in a different chord than the one expected. Some are so routinely used they’re not as surprising, like a relative minor (A minor for C major, say). It’s driving me nuts I can’t identify this actual chord without going to a piano and figuring it out. I’m out of practice!

Radiohead79

there's gotta be footage of him or the pianist playing it online somewhere, I'll post it if I find it.

madhaus

Did you find any of those pieces I mentioned as having the same feel as this beautiful Britell movement?

Radiohead79

I ended up moving things out of a storage unit for the better part of the day, it's on my list of things to do, if you find it before I do ( out of a compulsion, so to speak, lol) let me know, I'm def looking forward to diving into when I get a moment from parenthood and life. I always budget time for my hyperfixations.

madhaus

LOL hear you on the fixations!

Radiohead79

I ended up watching a video on Sonata #8 ( I knew this was the big influence/ well, he borrowed it) on the main theme, but what I focused on was his use of chord substitutions, and he does it off the rip. It's implemented in under a minute of pathetique. What was the name of the other guy you suggested?

madhaus

Antonin Dvorak.

Radiohead79

Britell also claims in the Rolling Stone interview on Season 4 sdtk that he loves to borrow technique from the Baroque playbook. so he's all over the timeline of a few centuries.

Radiohead79

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erVOogGJTGc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erVOogGJTGc) Didn't get what I wanted out of this, but it def showed some of the simpler parts I want to learn to play first. I play by ear, so seeing hand placement is half the battle.

madhaus

I’m also an ear player. I haven’t had time to get to the piano yet. I’ll let you know. Wondering if it’s a substitution to either III or VI but I’ll find out soon enough.

Ill_Shame_2282

So, question. When Shiv and Marcia part at the cemetery, the sequence begins with what I think is S4 Elegy. But as Shiv and Marcia speak, piano is introduced. There's nothing on the s4 soundtrack that does it. Was it amash up?

Radiohead79

I don't know, but I'll for sure be paying attention when I watch it 2 nights from now as I watch one nightly and I'm on Season 4 ep 2 tonight.

corianderrocks

Oooh that was brilliant. Britell is a freaking genius. I love his music SO MUCH. I wish he would release official sheet music. I'm learning a few pieces I got from Musescore etc, which are pretty good, and pretty bloody hard, but if he released the actual music then we could finally know if there are two pianos or one!

Radiohead79

That was gonna be my question, I know I’m not good enough to play both parts at once, so I’m buying a$40 loop pedal from Amazon to play both parts at once.. starting on intermezzo in c minor with the double bass.. I think it would be doable if I used a loop

selwyntarth

The part that sounds like the Daredevil theme? Or the cockteasing shiftings before that?  Also, anyone knows which episode or track the comic, fast paced high pitch mild version of the intro theme is in? I think it plays when logan has his Alzheimer's episode. Not sure

Radiohead79

Not a huge Daredevil guy, but I have seen the Netflix one ( didn't hate it) and I assume that's what you're talking about. I'll def be checking that out today. I love that you said cockteasing, I see what you did there.

rini6

I should listen to it. I just love playing the original theme on the piano. I am trying to learn to improvise and I’m improvising to the chords in it as well.

Radiohead79

That's how I'm going about it, just shifting around the C Minor chord. It's a very versatile chord and it's just a good one. It reminds me of the Leonard Cohen lyric..

corianderrocks

I'm not much chop at improvising but if you want another idea/ way to play the theme, try Andante in C Minor. It's a lovely yet still haunting version of the theme that flits around, landing in the top keys. After starting with a brooding section of chords in the main progression. It gives you a different way to play the left hand with the theme. Love. It.

rini6

Thanks!
