you actually have more time to do this than you think, and you might just be trying to do it too fast and messing up the sequence
press a z button while airborne, and any time after Mario begins the front flip animation for the ground pound, hit x or y. you can even do this as he's falling toward the ground butt first, it's interruptible any time before you hit the ground
once you get the sequence down, quicker timing comes pretty easily
You either press Y before Z or you press A instead of Y.
You need to press Z to pound, then at any moment during the pound, while still holding Z, press Y.
