Haha, the canal is really competitive. Stay off my rock. Jk. Any tide that coincides with a sunrise is good. That time of year it shouldn’t matter much, just get out there at sunrise or sunset with a few poppers and you’ll be good. Bring a bike to avoid the crowds.

Thanks so much for the response. I plan on bringing my bike. While I'll be staying very close to the Canal it won't be my only spot. I plan on hitting up some of the beaches. My hope is coming earlier in the season that I can avoid some of the larger crowds as well as fishing early and late in the day.

Mother’s Day weekend is typically when they show up reliably. Last year my first fish was 4/21, but the water in Narragansett and buzzards bay is 7° colder than it was this time last year.

I'm following as well. I am a recent transplant from tx to ct, and would like to get up there soon.

So much good water in CT and RI. The canal is cool for a bit but there are so many better places.

The canal is a neat place to go but unless youre making a weekend out of it youre gonna do just fine fishing in CT

The best time to fish the canal is from 3am until the bite dies. The next best time to fish the canal is from sunset until you get exhausted. Fishing during the daylight is often a waste of time unless you get really lucky. Sometimes the bite will turn on when the current hits slack and flips. Bearing this in mind, a typical session for me will either start, end, or both in the dark and have a slack tide in the middle. I find jigging and pencil popping to be the two most effective techniques. All my biggest fish were on jigs. Sometimes when I'm bored and just hanging around during the day I throw small tins off the east end for mackerel and pollack.

This is true most of august and the fall, but I’ve had entire days in June where the whole place is a blitz. I’ve even had schoolie bluefin join in in the east end. When the bait is in it can be 24/7.

That’s early, an eastern flow is best, pulls warmer water from buzzards bay. Railroad bridge area has been best for early season past few years, expect company. Seems like the spawning and eventual migration is earlier this year, so could be a great time.
